I used Stead Sheet Metal in 2012 when my cornice needed major restoration work. I was very happy with their work back then, so I naturally called them back. Since 2012, the company has been taken over by Rafael Espinoza from Michael Ortiz. Rafael was an employee of Michael's and had actually worked on my cornice in 2012. Michael's daughter, Stephanie Guzman, is now the office manager. In this current project, Stead Sheet Metal replaced a rusting metal panel on the cornice and painted the entire cornice in 3 different colors. They applied 3 coats of each paint color. I was very happy with the results. Rafael was great to work with and was very professional. Their work is guaranteed for 2 years.

Paid for materials in late July - 14K to be exact. The put up some siding with materials they suposedly have left over from another project, then left the job site and we haven't had any firm updates since. We're still waiting on confirmation of materials and installation date. We've been told by our GC that materials shouldn't take 6 weeks and they're not getting calls back from the owner of Stead. I have also called and the owner, Jonathan, and he told me our materials would be in this week and he would provide a full crew next week for installation. I've called his cell phone, the office, and sent text messages. No response or confirmation of install. Horrible experience and the work is still not complete. We can't go hire someone else because he has the money for the job that our bank construction loan paid out.

Jonathan at Stead was very punctual and patient. Dealing with a smaller, self-managed building sometimes takes more time and patience, and Jonathan was great with that. The crew was also punctual and professional, to say the least. They actually finished the job well before the original estimate. The final product is fabulous. The work was a bit pricey, but we're very happy with the result.
Description of Work: Restored deterioration and painted existing cornice in order to keep the architectural integrity of the building. Also repaired the damaged copper dormer to match the non-damaged portion.

Jonathan from Stead Sheet Metal readily identified the cause AND SOLUTION TO our gutter "leakage" problem. The PROBLEM: -- instead of water falling from the roof into the gutter, it was following the roof line and falling between the gutter and the porch fascia board. The SOLUTION: Install a copper apron at the porch-edge of the gutter -- now water is forced to flow INTO the gutter. So grateful we found someone competent to do this type of work. Too bad for us that the original guy who put the gutters up did not think of this necessary detail on the gutter. Work was done after a bit of a wait -- they were busy with prior jobs -- but definitely worth the wait.
Description of Work: Applied a copper "apron" to the upper edge of copper gutters to prevent water from trailing behind gutter instead of INTO it. Also, caulking applied around hairline openings in an existing copper porch roof. Would use them again in a heartbeat.

It took them about two months to complete. I did have a problem with them initially with excepting the coupon from Angie's list but i got Angie's list involved on my behalf and they ended up accepted it without a complaint. Also initially, i had a hard time contacting them but after Angie's list got involved, they were very responsive. But all in all in the end, the quality of the work was excellent, i was very pleased.

Excellent job. We had a tight timeline to work with, but despite some trouble getting the custom materials in, they managed to meet our deadline. The windows do not leak anymore, and the new metal facades match the old facades exactly. Responsive. Provided a well-documented proposal and a warranty on their work. Would definitely recommend them, they are specialists in architectural metal and can do this type of work quickly, do it well, and at a reasonable price. Our only real trouble was finding them; I spoke to quite a number of companies that did siding and exteriors before figuring out that architectural metal was the keyword phrase I was really looking for.
Description of Work: Water was entering the building above windows where there are custom metal facades above the windows. They removed some of the metal facades from our building (the leaking ones), replaced the wood and water seals beneath, and then re-installed new metal facades to match the other existing facades.

We found Stead via a Google search. Michael Ortiz arrived for the initial meeting on time with plenty of examples on his IPad. He took the time to describe the process. We received 3 estimates for the project and although Stead's was just slightly higher than another bidder, we felt more comfortable with their experience and professionalism. The final result is excellent. Stead (and project manager Jonathan) skillfully fabricated damaged/missing sections of our 100+ year old metal cornice. It's now painted and appears as it would have 100 years ago. They guarantee the water tightness of the cornice for 2 years and we expect just routine maintenance for the foreseeable future. Thanks to Stead for doing a great job. We highly recommend them.

I contacted Stead Sheet Metal based on the excellent reviews they received on Angie's List. The owner, Michael Ortiz, responded quickly and we set up a date for him to come and give me an estimate. When Michael came for the estimate, he seemed very knowledgable and showed me many samples of his work on his iPad. The next day, Michael emailed me a proposal. Since I was waiting for another estimate, I did not agree to his proposal immediately. I received the proposal from another company that I also found on Angie's List, and was shocked to find out that their quote was almost double that of Stead Sheet Metal's quote. The competitor's quote did not even include painting, since they do not do that. I decided that I would sign with Stead Sheet Metal, since their price was more than fair and they had more than 10 years of experience restoring cornices. During the restoration, Michael was very good about letting me know what they would be working on each day. When I made a last minute change by adding another paint color, Michael was very flexible and accommodated my request. After the work was completed and the scaffolding was taken down, I noticed a few spots of white where the cornice should have been painted red. I contacted Michael and he sent someone out the next day to repaint those areas, no questions asked. I could not happier with Michael Ortiz and Stead Sheet Metal. The cornice looks brand new and the new reconstructed ornamental pieces look like they have always been there. He matched them exactly to the original design. His crew also did a great job of cleaning up after the work was done. Michael guaranteed the water tightness of his work for 3 years.
Description of Work: Restored decorative cornice on top of building. This included the following: removing rust and damaged metal, replacing it with 24 gauge galvanized steel restoring 2 ornamental pieces an both ends of the cornice painted the cornice using 4 different colors, with 2 coats of each color

Michael Ortiz is extremely responsive, helpful and professional! He went above and beyond to answer questions for our complicated project. Having seen examples of this company's craftsmanship around the city, paired with the experience of meeting and speaking with Michael Ortiz, I would not hesitate to hire them in the future. A friend recommended Stead Sheet Metal after they did extensive work on his building - he was quite impressed with the quality and the entire experience.
Description of Work: We obtained estimates for metal coping on parapet walls and siding for three row house units; one option was to use metal for this project. Other neighbors preferred a more traditional siding approach, so we did not end up using Stead Sheet Metal. For future projects that require metal, or for projects that are independent of neighbors, we will most definitely choose to go with this company.

The work ethic is similar to an electrician or plumber not putting wire in correctly or piping correctly because you won't see the wire or the piping in the walls. It is totally unacceptable work ethic. I have still been waiting to get the worked fixed. Overall, I asked for this work to be fixed in June by the manager he said he would get his men out there in September. The point is there has been a significant delay of almost six months. If they are unable to complete the work they should have stated that fact. They issued me a statement that said Jonathan the manager had believed the work to be completed in September. In the beginning, when these problems had arose I had gave him an additional $1000 to finish the work according to the contract that had been drawn up, but at the time when I submitted a check to him in person they were still correcting the June mistakes. No first floor work had been done. I would like the work to be done completely and accurately, or a correct competent crew to fix the jobs that have been completed. If this does not work I would like compensation for the work. The dates have been approximated. I have received two reasons for the delays, one from the owner and one from the manager. The owner told me that the delay was caused due to the fact that they were proceeding in steps, in order to make sure that they did things correctly. The manager repeatedly told me that the delays were solely caused by their inability to obtain rain diverters. I initiated an online search and found a company in Florida that could send rain diverters to me in 3-5 business days via Fed Ex. KEEP THIS ADDENDUM FOR ALL INFO SHOULD BE COMMUNICATED
Description of Work: I was first visited by Stead Sheet Metal in November of 2010. The owner of the business came with his business manager to check out the job I was interested in them doing. We established a contract in May 17, 2011. The work began in July of 2011. Everything had been discussed in November . They directed a downstop up on to a porch roof and then elbowing back down into the gutter. This downspout may have been nailed or screwed on to to roof as I could not lift it up off the roof. They put another downspout at the SE corner from the second to the first floor that directed water over the gutter and over the facia back down to the ground. I called them about the work to voice a complaint. I also faxed a statement to the owner, Michael Ortiz, dated 7/5/11 on the one issue of the downspout placed upon the porch roof. I did not hear back from them for awhile. When I finally I got a hold of them they said they would come out to look at the job. No one ever came out to look at the work. . I also stated what I believe should have been done with the gutter. My work phone number has always been on their contract. The job estimater by his own statement has no practical experience in the work of architecture sheet metal. The manager came out in the third week of September. The owner had only come out once for our initial meeting in November of 2010. The manager saw the mistakes in the work in Sept of 2011. We reviewed the errors and the needed corrections on the sexcond floor. . While still correcting second floor work the manager asked for a 1,000 additional payment which I provided, assuming the remaining work would be done correctly. I was home the entire day for any consultation. The workers began work on the first floor. However on the first floor there is a wooden skirt that flares out 45 degrees. It was made clear in November that the downspout was to curve around and not through the skirt. The workers called their manager stating "can we shave a bit off the skirt"? I was not consulted with the matter. The manager allowed them to do the shaving. They cut out about 2" off the skirt with a dull chisel. The skirt was removed because it projects out from the wall about 4". They wanted to put the downspout against the wall and so they chopped out the skirt to fit this downspout in place. I found out this project was going on after the fact and tried to communicate with them that this was not what I wanted. This has left probable water migration under the skirtwood. I called the manager about the incident. He said he would put a piece back and caulk and glue it. I explained that was not in the agreement. His defense was that he was a cabinet maker. Although, he has a friendly personality I needed a competent worker for this craft. I also spoke with one of the workers whose justification for the crude cut out of the skirt was that no one would not see the crudely cut out piece of skirt because it is hidden by the bush. This was the "straw that broke the camels back". I provided drawings, models for the supports at he second floor. The owner, Michael, states in his email that he has following the work and now(9/16/11) he is goin to put Jonathan (the manager) on the job. Also he states the job has been taken slowly in stages to avoid problems. NOTE: The manager(Jonathan ) has been assigned to this job from the very beginning. Putting him on "now" wont help anything. Also, The owner said the job is taken slowly to avoid problems. Contradicting this is the explanation made multiple times by the manager(Jonathan) that the sole reason for delay was the inability to obtain rain diverters. Two explanations which do not match. NOTE: I contacted an architectural sheet metal company easily and was told they can provide rain diverters, offsets, goosenecks, etc and ship within 3-5 days via fedex. This is a one to two day job if handled by competent job evaluators and sheet metal workers. Many months are not needed for any reason .

Response from Stead Sheet Metal
We have always expressed desire to do the job right. We want to finish and make the customer 100% happy. The total amount of the job is $3,500.00 of which we have received $2,000.00. We want to finish the job and give the customer a discount of $200 for the wood replacement. Note: The wood the installer removed was completely deteriorated and falling apart.

We purchased a older home where the eyebrow windows had been previously leaked and were thought to have been repaired. After a short time, we had water coming dripping onto the floor when it rained hard. I found this company in Angies List and based on the feedback, gave him a call. Michael responded immediately and made an appt. to come out within a day or two. Within a day, he provided a detailed quote for two options...replace or repair. Since we felt we would need to replace the roofing shinges in the next 2-3 years, we weren't ready to replace with new. A fter selecting the repair option, the work was done very quickly and within a day. Michael was fantastic to work with!! He really understands his business and his website reflects all the work he has done so you get a sense of comfort of the skill and reputation. He treats you as if you were a neighbor or friend. Very honest and tells you what you need to know. Almost a rare breed! We couldn't be happier and highly recommend him to anyone that need copper roofing work done!!!
Description of Work: We had copper roofs over a couple eyebrow windows that leaked and needed to be repaired or replaced. Michael evaluated the situation and let us know that it was possible to repair...or we could replace. He gave us a quote for each. We went with the repair option since our roof shingles were going to be replaced in the next 2-3 years and replacing it at that time could have been all throw-away money...depending on how we re-did the roofing.

Michael provided prompt calls and e-mails. Stead actually came out and meassured. He figured out what we wanted, fabricated it and had it up in about a week. Stead Sheet Metal are a follow through company.
Description of Work: We wanted a metal facade to replace the glass and aluminum one that was falling apart. Our idea was to have six copper panels installed. We had two other companies come out to give an estimate including Albert Wagner. Both never returned with an estimate. One company Bear Metal wouldn't even come out and take a look. In today's economy I just couldn't believe these other companies didn't want work. To the point Michael from Stead Sheet Metal is the real deal. From measuring to installation was about a week. These other guys are a joke.

I met with Michael a few days after I initially called him for the estimate and I received the quote two days later. The price was just right. I also had two other estimates from other companies but decide to use Stead sheet metal because of all the good reviews on angie' s list. The process was easy and I was kept well informed through out the whole time. The work done was very good and was completed when promised. The work crew was promt and very professional. They used tarps and plywood sheets to cover certain areas of the house and landscaping. The men cleaned up very well after all the work was completed.

I found Stead Sheet Metal on Angies List. I called a couple of metal fabricators and chose Michael Ortiz of Stead as he seemed honest and reasonable. I called a sheet metal company because the siding companies I had called didn't do what I needed done, and, most of the companies didn't have the experience to work in a very narrow area as the building next door was nearly touching the bay of my building. Stead Sheet metal got the job done professionally and on time. This was my first experience with a sheet metal fabricator. Michael put his services in writing and we signed a contract. He provided me proof of insurance. His team got the job done when he said (including working on Sunday because of rain the day before) and his work looks great. Unfortunately, no one sees his work as the bay is on the side of the house. I compared his pricing to other sheet metal fabricators and to my other option of only repairing the existing metal before I hired him. As much as I didn't want to spend to buy new, I knew I had to. Michael did do some extra work -- which I was charged for. Some of the plywood covering the bay (under the metal siding) was rotted and needed replacement. He didn't know about this until he took down the old metal siding. Although I was not happy about paying additional, he broke down his additional costs and they were in fact reasonable. Total additional paid was $400. He showed me photos of the additional work he did as well.

I solicited several quotes for this work. Michael Ortiz provided the only quote that included painting the entire job, and his price was less than half of the other quotes I received that did not even include the paint work. At least 2 of the other quotes were for repair only and did not include replacement of the coping and decking, and even specified that their cosmetic repairs would do nothing to fix the underlying issue, which was water infiltration due to the extreme deterioration of the coping and decking. Michael, on the other hand, not only replaced all the decking and coping, but guarantees the job against water infiltration for 2 years. I will admit to being skeptical that we would get a quality job given the astonishing difference in price between Stead and the other vendors, but given that even his low price was significantly more than was budgeted in our reserve study, we crossed our fingers and contracted him for the work, in large part because we had read the glowing reviews here on Angie's List from two other happy customers. Please see some "before and after" pictures here: (Angie's limit of 4 photos cannot do the job justice!) http://www.flickr.com/photos/17135960@N07/sets/72157622442274766/ In addition to a job very well done, Michael's crew was polite and punctual, and cleaned up the worksite every single day. I can't speak highly enough about this company.

I thought that the cornice would have to be removed because I couldn't imagine that it could be saved and recreating the original would have been too costly. Upon inspection by Stead they assured me that it could be restored. They arrived promptly and had the scaffolding up 40 feet in the air within a couple of hours. They removed more pigeon carcasses than I could count, they removed the aluminum siding that had been covering the holes and they found that the original metal work actually wrapped around the building. They perfectly restored it and even recreated scrolls and rosettes. The final touch was sanding, priming and painting it. Upon their suggestion, we chose a dark bronze metal paint that highlights the details that we didn't even know existed(and would have been lost in a black paint that we thought we wanted). Stead has my highest recommendation. They saved a rare architectural element and they treated the job as if it was their own house. I was amazed at what they taught me about metal work-mainly, that amazing work can be done and it can be done at an affordable price. See before and after pictures and if you need a recommendation for Stead, please don't hesitate to contact me.
