Response from Star Tuckpointing Inc
THIS IS A NEW CONSTRUCTION BUILDING MADE WITH CINDER BLOCKS AND METAL COPINGS. UNFORTUNATELY, THIS TYPE OF CONSTRUCTION SYSTEM IS EXTREMELY SUSCEPTIBLE TO WATER PENETRATION DUE TO NUMEROUS DESIGN AND MATERIAL FLAWS. THERE ARE A FEW STEPS THAT ARE REQUIRED TO INSURE WATER PENETRATION IS PREVENTED. ALL OF THESE OPTIONS HAVE BEEN DISCUSSES WITH THE CUSTOMER AND THE OWNERS HAVE ELECTED TO PROCEED WITH SOME OF THESE STEPS. IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT THE STEPS TAKEN SO FAR DID NOT YIELD COMPLETE WATER PENETRATION PREVENTION. WE WOULD SUGGEST THAT THE CUSTOMER COMPLETES THE RECOMMENDED STEPS BY CHEMICALLY SEALING THE BUILDING. IF THERE IS ANYWAY WE CAN ASSIST YOU FURTHER, PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO CONTACT ME DIRECTLY AT 708-829-6471 OR STARTUCKPOINTING@GMAIL.COM SINCERELY PETER KLESZCZ

The original quote was given in November of 2007 and the work was done in January of 2008 due to weather restrictions. The work was performed by three men and it took 4 hours. Peter Kleszcz was very responsive to my questions and prompt with returning calls. The area was very clean at the conclusion of the job. The deposit on the job was whatever I was comfortable giving. Fifty percent was paid at the start of the job and the last payment was mailed at the completion of the job. Overall, the experience went very well. I think that the crew did a great job in just 4 hours. Star tuckpointing wasn't the cheapest but I feel that I got what I paid for. I could've hired someone to just tuckpoint the brick (for a lot less money) but that wouldn't have solved the underlying problem of the bad lintel.
Description of Work: Removed brick above basement window on North elevation of a Chicago bungalow and removed old lintel. A new primed and painted steel lintel was installed with flashing and weep holes. Existing brick replaced above new lintel. Front porch column tuckpointed where needed.

Voytek returned my initial call promptly and set up a time at my convenience to examine the work for an estimate. We booked a time for the near future and Voytek called sooner to squeeze me in before Jan. 5th. He and his partner arrived a few minutes late, but immediately started setting up tarp to prevent tracking dirt and residue everywhere. Voytek and his partner worked almost non-stop for about seven hours switching between the two work areas - the laundry room and the rec room. Voytek explained all of what he was doing and even asked for me to check his progress. I was thoroughly impressed with his diligence and professionalism. He also a genuinely nice guy.
Description of Work: The brick foundation in the basement of our 120 year old house was caked with efflorescence and deteriorating. We had the bricks scraped, washed, and tuck pointed. Some bricks at the base of a support post were replaced and tuck pointed.

Peter came out promptly to give an estimate and left me with the estimate that day. After looking at a couple of other companies, I chose Star, based on both reputation and competitive pricing. The project went very well. It was about a 5 week wait after committing to the job, but I think that was primarily because of the time of year and the fact that Star was very busy. They completed the job in just a couple of days and the work was very well done. The only problem was that some of my neighbor's plants were destroyed by some falling brick. Peter took off the cost of replacing those plants from the bill. I was extremely satisfied and would both recommend them to others and will use them again for future masonry work.
Description of Work: Disassemble parapet on north elevation down 6 layers. Disassemble parapet on south elevation down 1-2 layers and 12 layers at the west end of wall for a total of 6 linear feet. Inside and outside layers were rebuilt using new recycled common brick; cut off flashing. Remove and reinstall existing copings. Some copings were replaced.

Peter was very attentive and professional and fielded any of our questions and was up front with additional costs and discussed them honestly (sadly too rare with contractors who would rather just send you an extra bill). He also assessed our project with the goal of making it last another 110 years, since we were not interested in the bandage solutions other contractors suggested. The work was completed in a timely manner and with a good quality and good communication through Peter and his workers continued through completion.
Description of Work: Extensive masonry work was required on all exterior faces of our home. The rear wall ended up being entirely rebuilt (although the original quote was just to replace the exterior wythe, but compromised on the additional price) both wythes on first and second floor and exterior wythe at basement level. The existing masonry openings were rebuilt in similar locations with arched headers. Our side elevation had previously been parged at the basement level and along the parapet indicating that the brick underneath was most likely damaged and with the addition to the parging was only going to get worse, so those sections of the masonry were rebuilt, out wythe only. Our front elevation has nice old face brick that was in pretty good shape, so it was tuckpointed, a stone band was replaced and a sill lowered for a larger window. Over the entire building all stone sills were replaced, and some misc. deteriorated masonry was replaced in other places under our joists.

Peter returned my call promptly. He came out and surveyed the job as planned. The estimate was provided through email. We then corresponded through email. Once I offered the job, the job was scheduled about 6 weeks out. (I was hoping for sooner, but Peter was on target with the job date.) Peter called the day prior to starting the job. The job crew headed by Ziggy arrived on time. Ziggy reviewed the job and we discussed adding metal chimney caps which were not part of the original job. The crew built the scaffolding (two story home). The chimney was rebuilt the first day, and they returned the second for some minor clean up, to finish up some minor work, and remove the scaffolding. Peter called the following day to see if I was satisfied with the job. I was very satisfied. I had several estimates, but Star had the best price.

Two men came out and worked from 8am until 5pm. They cleaned the stonework and then proceeded to make tuck pointing repairs around my home. Two chimneys also needed spot tuck pointing. After all the work was done, they cleaned everything up so that you wouldn't even know they were there. They were very efficient, professional, courteous and skilled.
Description of Work: I had the stone on the front of my home chemically cleaned and re-tuck pointed. Also, tuck pointing repairs were made to two chimneys and various areas of my house that needed work.

Peter showed up within a day of calling him to give me an estimate of the work to be performed. He was courteous and knowledgeable. Once I signed the contract, the work started on time and was finished within 4 days as promised. I then added two additional items to the original estimate, a post and a railing. Peter had his subcontractors come out and give me an estimate and the work was completed a couple of weeks after the concrete work was done. There was some peripheral damage done to the siding of the house during the concrete work. Peter told me that it would be fixed. I didn't even have to ask him to take care of it. His subcontracter came out and matched up the siding and repaired it to my satisfaction. This is a great company to work with. I would definitely hire them again and recommend them to my friends.
Description of Work: Broke up and poured new front and back concrete staircases. Also, broke up and poured new garage floor and some sections of sidewalk.

The experience was overall a very good one. Peter and his brother Voitek were very customer friendly, answering all our questions and completing items we requested done. Voitek was the only one on the crew who spoke English, but he was present for most of the 2-3 days. They cleaned up very nicely with only some brick and mortar remnants left. There was a problem with a dropped brick that broke a basement window, but Voitek gave us a good deal on a new glass block window and replaced it himself.
Description of Work: Our chimney needed to be torn down from the roof-line and rebuilt. The bricks were replaced with the same type, and a new cap was made. They also replaced the cage that went on the top of the cap because the old one had rusted. The clay liner was repaired to fill in some cracks, and this was done free of charge.

I very much enjoyed working with Peter and his brother, Voytek. They are both very pleasant and professional. The craftsmanship was very good, and their workers finished the job in the time-frame promised. There was only one small issue with the job because the workers failed to lay down tarp when they removed the capstone. This resulted in concrete being swept under my decking. Quite a mess. However, the mistake was acknowledged and, in addition to apologizing profusely for the mess, they were amenable to a quick and fair settlement. I still recommend them because their work was good, and they were easy-going and professional people. Things can always go wrong, and I appreciate that they acknowledged their mistake and made good on it quickly.

Fantastic. He gave me a free cost estimate. Broke down the work into what is needed right away and what can wait and explained the whole process, should I choose to get the work done. Also, the prices he quoted sound very reasonable (and I'm comparing it to what the home inspector quoted for that type of work). The work thus far was cost estimating and his cost estimate was thorough and detailed; an excellent job.
Description of Work: On a very short and quick turnaround time, I requested an inspection and estimate for potential tuckpointing and chimney work on a home I'm considering buying. Peter was extremely responsive, understanding my need for a quick cost estimate. Even on a holiday, he agreed to come out and take a look. He called me before he was leaving to ensure that we'd arrive there at approximately the same time. When I arrived, he had already checked things out and then gave me a quick break down as to what was needed. He was extremely knowledgeable and very friendly and told me he'd email me a detailed cost estimate later in the day, which he did. Peter broke down the work into what is needed right away, and what can wait. He broke down the costs in the same manner. There is no question - if I buy that house, he is the specialist in brick and tuckpointing that I will hire.

It took a couple of days to remove the old chimney and then the work started. They used all new brick and the brick is a good match. Was very good in cleanup. The project took about four or five days a little longer than I had expected but we did have rain one of the days. Star did cover the work they had started so I did not have any problems with rain in my fireplace.
Description of Work: A complete rebuild of my chimney down to the flashing and reduce the number of flues to one. I had a flue cap installed. Also I replaced some face brick on the front of my home. I am very pleased with the quality of work and the appearance of the completed job.

Peter came out and gave an estimate for repair and replacement of approximately 10 bricks. Estimate came in at $500- they ended up needing to replace 10 additional bricks that were crumbling. Peter did the estimate on the spot and work was performed about 8 weeks later. He told me upfront they had a busy summer schedule and wouldn't get to it until 7-8 weeks out. The work is very good and the crew cleaned up etc. Peter was responsive via email as well to set up appts. I would definitely work with them again.

The experience was great from start to finish. Peter is professional, knowledgeable and very prompt at returning calls. On time for the estimate. Was not pushy, just showed us what we needed. The two guys that came did a great job. They gave us some special caulk when I asked about sealing some areas near our foundation. This was such a pleasant experience with contractors. There was a bit of a wait between the estimate and when the job was performed, but Peter was upfront about this at the time of the estimate. I would not hesitate to call these guys again.

They were completely professional and willing to work with us when most of the other contractors we contacted were pushing us to rebuild the walls at a cost of $7000 or more (walls that the previous contractor had done a poor job on about a year ago). We put a deposit down with the understanding that they'd start the work after July 4th. They started a week early after contacting us to make sure we were ready. Both Peter and Voytek were very knowledgeable and personable.

Excellent work. Voytek was our point person for the project. He walked through the area of work and reviewed the expectations of the project up front. He also let us know the work times for his team and made sure the areas were cleaned up each night. This project took 4 days and the result was excellent. At end of project, Voytek walked through the entire project with us to view all work performed. All of our questions were answered. The entire project was handled very professionally. STAR was not the most inexpensive estimate we obtained, but we feel we received value for what was performed and were very pleased with their professionalism, detailed estimate proposal and availability for questions.
