Star Tuckpointing specializes in providing tuckpointing and masonry restoration services to commercial and residential communities. We're a family owned business where the owners make up a part of the crews. This leads to a constantly superior quality product. We have been in business since 1992, and because we keep our customers happy, most of the new work we receive is the result of a clients referral.
Star was professional, knowledgeable and easy to work with. They completed the work on time, and always cleaned up after the work day. We would certainly hire them again.

Peter gave me a window of three hours of when he would arrive, told me he would call when he was on his way, and did. After looking at the area, he explained that I needed to move the tray under my downspout or even replace it with a longer tray and make sure it was aimed away from the foundation. He also told me to get some dirt and pack it up to the limestone trim, sloping away from the house, as it was currently sloping toward the house and directing the rainwater toward the foundation, which was causing it to seep into the basement. He also gave me an estimate to repair the loose bricks, and told me that structurally the foundation was sound and it wasn't an emergency situation, which is what I was worried about. I was impressed with his honest assessment of the situation. He was very knowledgeable and was able to give me an on-the-spot estimate, which he said he would e-mail to me for acceptance. He did say that scheduling is about 6 weeks out, but since the repair is not critical if I make some simple changes, that did not concern me. I gave Peter my work schedule two months out and he called me to schedule on one of my days off. The worker he sent was very polite and did an excellent job matching the grout. I was very happy with the work and would call this company again if I needed to.
Description of Work: I had water seepage in my basement and called Star Tuckpointing to come out and give me an estimate on tuckpointing some loose bricks in the front, which I thought might be causing the problem.

We were very pleased with Star's work from beginning to finish. They came out three times over a period of two years to give us estimates on a variety of work. They were always very professional and their estimates were very competitive. The work they did for us was completed within the timeframe they discussed and didn't deviate from the estimate they provided. They also had someone available by phone while they were working to answer any questions that came up during the process. Overall, they completed the task they were asked to complete in an above average manner. The only issue that we had was that they made a mess which they didn't thoroughly clean up after the project and they dripped some of the sealant on our roofdeck. Nothing major, but it was disappointing. However, for the price, they were definitely worth it and we'd use them again.
They were fantastic. They got the whole job done fine. The price was outstanding also. I could not have been any happier with their service.
Description of Work: They rebuilt our chimney and put in new lentils.

STAR responded quickly to the request for proposal (which I submitted via their website), and were able to stop by to look at the project within a a few days. Our needs were pretty basic, so it didn't take long at all to explain what we needed and after taking a few measurements that was it. I received my quote from them about 36 hours later. Not sure how competitive the price was but I didn't have alot of time to look into alternatives, so I trusted the Angie's List community feedback on their pricing (good) and accepted the bid. I was told it would be 3-5 weeks until they could do the work, and that estimate was pretty good (I think it was 4 weeks). However, one thing that was not too helpful was that they only gave me one day of warning when they were ready to start, after having not heard from them since the quote process. They called on a Wednesday morning saying they would start on Thursday (meaning I needed to be there to choose the mortar color and inspect the sample chemical wash area). However, we had storms Wednesday night and into Thursday (guess you can't do this kind of work in the rain), so they called Thursday morning to let me know they needed to push it out one day to Friday. On Friday we actually had them get started without us there since both my wife and I needed to be at work early. My wife drove back to the house on her lunch break to choose the mortar color. They didn't seem to have alot of options (3 colors), but one of them suited our needs nicely. And they may have just showed us the ones that were possible for our existing bricks - perhaps they have other colors for other projects. Aside from that one check-in, that was all they needed. They finished the grinding out of the old mortar and the chemical wash on Friday, and then came back and did the new mortar on Saturday. The chemical wash was awesome - we had brick that had been stained black by an old mansard roof that was on the house until a couple years ago. Nothing we had found could get it clean but now it looks great. The actual tuckpointing was well done, too. Very uniform, no globs of extra mortar left over on the brick face or the ground. They did a good job of removing and replacing anything on the facade that needed to be moved to allow them to work (gutter downspouts, shutters, house number, etc.). If I ever needed to talk to them it was easy to get ahold of Peter. He returned voicemails promptly if he wasn't able to pick up the phone when I called. I would definitely recommend them.
Description of Work: We had them grind out and tuckpoint the brick on the first floor exterior of our home. They also did a chemical wash on the bricks to remove staining that had built up over 68 years.

I am very impressed by Star Tuckpointing's professionalism and their price. This was not a huge job. I had a few wythes of brick that needed tuckpointing on my chimney and a few other miscellaneous repairs to the foundation brick. The whole job took just a few hours. However, other quotes I had were for $4,500 and $2,700! Star did the work for $875 - much more in line with the time and materials required. The other contractors were either crazy or just didn't want the job. From the first call, the staff at Star were all very professional and extremely polite. They showed up on time, bid the work and did it within a week or so. It was that easy. No hassles, no delays. I was particularly impressed when I accidently overpaid them and they promptly called to let me know. They followed up with another copy of the invoice. They could have kept it and I never would have realized, so I really appreciated their honesty. Not every job around the house is a major repair. It is nice to be treated fairly for the small stuff. Thanks, Star, for a job well done.

Peter was on time for our appointment. He thought that the bricks could go at least another 5 years, if I did not mind the appearance. He thought that what I need to do is work with a landscaper to change the grade of the dirt near my home, to draw water away. He really didn't think that tuckpointing, etc., was necessary for what I needed to accomplish.
Description of Work: I have bricks along my foundation that are crumbling, and sometimes there is water in my basement. I contacted three companies to come out and provide an estimate as to what they thought might be going on, and what the costs would be to repair.

\They called me several days before they wanted to start and it is always difficult with scaffolding and the houses are close together. My neighbor would not let them erect scaffold in their yard on the side on such late notice so Star had to put it in my front yard. This added to the expense but we worked it out. They tore down the old chimney, rebuilt it, reinstall flue tiles and a stone cap and new flashing. They also tuckpointed a second chimney and cleaned out both.
Description of Work: My neighbor told me that my chimney was falling in. so I got three estimates. One was really low, one was unbelievably expensive and Star was kind of low middle. All three companies were on Angie's List. I had to wait two months before Star Tuckpointing was available

Dealt with Peter. Very quick response. Provide a very professional assessment of my problems and produced a comprehensive quotation, which was competitive. They were not my lowest bid, but they gave me the most confidence that they understood the problem and how to fix it. The lead time was about 8 weeks before they could get started. Once they started, they stayed on the job and finished it in a few days. I had to call them back once to do a more complete job on the spot tuckpointing, but they responded quickly and finished the job to my satisfaction. I would not hesitate to recommend them or use them again.

Peter was very quick to come out and give an estimate, and it took about 6 weeks to schedule the work (which it appears is normal). Upon coming onsite, they preformed the work in one work day, however they failed to inform me that they would be using limestone to replace the bricks that were broken. Also, they left a layer of plastic coming out of the brick that they said was normal (which I have never seen after any tuckpointing). Needless to say the repair works, however it is very noticeable to anyone that work was done. I don't think I would use them in the future for any work.

We would like to apologize for any miscommunication that may have occurred in regards to the limestone use. During a lintel replacement, bricks were removed above the window. Typically we are able to reuse all of the bricks, but in this case some bricks were not structurally sound. Following an extensive search for similar bricks we were unable to find a close match, and discussed the situation with Jeff Barnes, our contract contact. A mutual decision was made to install two limestone accents symmetrically on the corners of the window to replace unusable bricks. The plastic above the window is rubberized flashing membrane that was installed on top of the replaced lintel. Installation of this membrane on top of the lintel is an essential part of the repair and main reason why the repair prevents water from entering the unit. Any water that enters the wall above the window drains via the installed flashing, weep ropes and end-dams. We recommend that the flashing membrane extends out by ¼ inch to allow for increased effectiveness. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you would like for us to trim the flashing to be flush with the lintel instead. We would be more than happy to come out and trim this membrane.

Peter came out to provide the initial quote and remained my main contact throughout the job. His brother, Voytek, came out with the team on day one when they were setting up the canopy. Voytek very thoroughly described the scope of the job in basic language that I, as a novice, could understand. He told me when I could expect the workers to arrive and depart each day and they did so like clockwork. I work from home and live in one of the affected units. I was concerned that there might be noise that would disturb my ability to do my work but he assured me that would not be the case and it was not. Voytek is the one that offered to throw in the spot tuck pointing of the entire face of the building on the last day of the job and I thought that really showed care for a job thoroughly completed and a willingness to please the customer. Both Peter and Voytek responded in a timely manner to my questions and were available whenever something came up during the process. The job took approximately 2 weeks and other than the canopy in front, no one in the building would have known they were there as they worked diligently, efficiently and neatly each day. We have some lintel repair around our windows that needs to be done and once we save up enough money, I'll be calling Star to do the job as I recommend them strongly!
Description of Work: I am in a 6-unit Co-Op and the two units at the top, third floor, received major water damage in the front rooms of both units during a heavy rain storm this fall. I found Star on Angie's List and I liked the ratings as well as the discount via coupon. In short, the flooding was due to deteriorated (powder like) limestone and mortar joints at the front, roof point, of the building. The team disassembled the front face brick parapet from the roof and cleaned and rebuilt it reusing as much of the original brick as possible. They installed new rubber flashing along with through-wall flashing under the limestone caps which had disintegrated over time. They removed and reinstalled the existing copings, caulked joints between the limestone caps, knocked out loose mortar at lintel cracks and limestone sills below the windows at the top of the three story building. They spot tuckpointed cracks larger than hairline near windows and limestone sills on two sides of the building. I was particularly impressed with an offer to spot tuckpoint down the front of the building on both sides at no additional charge.

They did a great job. They were very responsible and gave a great quote. Their price was the lowest that we got. They worked with us on pricing. They kept us really informed during the job. I liked that it was a family business. They worked hard whenever they could work. They finished the job just as promised. They actually did a little bit of extra work for us for no charge which was really nice of them. The only issue that we had was that some of landscaping got accidentally trampled. They thought really badly about it, so they did some extra work for no charge. They were very apologetic and said that they will make it up for that. The foreman was a pleasure to work with and very responsive.

I was extremely pleased with the quality of the work and responsivness. Star Tuckpointing came to view the job very shortly after I contacted the company. Despite it being a small job, Peter was very thotough in his inspection, and explained to me that the reason the masonry on several areas on my house and agarge kept cracking, was becaue the common bricks behind the face bricks were deteriorating. He said that the common brick would need to be replaced, and then the face brick re-installed. I thought the job was going to cost thousands, and was very pleasantly surprised by the final estimate, which was much less that I anticipated. The two men who did the work were very professional and thorough. I would recommed this company to anuyone who needs any brick work or tuckpoinitng!

I am very happy with the results. The estimate was spot on for the work completed. While onsite, I changed the scope of the project a bit and had them add a steel door to replace an old wooden/water damaged door and they were able to accommodate without problems. The quality of the masonry is good overall. The value for what you pay is very good. The people that I worked with at the company were very friendly and professional. Some negatives - Even though I thought they were excellent, I think it is prudent to give some negatives. 1. It took 8 weeks before they could start. I guess they are in such demand that everyone wants to hire them. They were up front about the queue.. so I had no problem. As I said before, well worth the wait. 2. I gave the workers access to the roof through the house and some things within the house went missing. I take responsibility for that since I left out a digital camera and some other valuables near the front door. Not everyone can be watched at all times.. but I still thought it was worth mentioning. 3. The quality was a little spotty around the door they installed and the windows where they did masonry work. For example, The steel door frame had a 1/2 inch gap on one side... big enough to see directly into the house. It was easily corrected with some caulk.. .but should have been filled with mortar or something else when installing the door. It was very obvious. Overall, i would highly recommend Star tuckpointing to anyone else. I would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: Rebuilt chimney, rebuilt a side parapet wall on the roof, unbricked a hidden window, installed a rear steel door, and rebricked the back corner of the house. The parapet wall on the roof was crumbling. The back corner of the house had water damage from a broken downspout. The brick needed to be replaced and new mortar applied.

This seems to be a very busy company, I was anxious about the wait to start the work but they seemed to have other projects before they could start ours. I originally thought the work would start weeks earlier but it kept getting pushed back. Other than that, the work got done before the real cold weather set in, that's what I was worried about. I guess all the fall rain can cause scheduling issues for this type of work. I was VERY pleased with the responsiveness of the company rep's Wojciech and Doytek. I also was very happy that they came out a second time to talk about the issues we were trying to resolve, the water damage and what the possible entry points were and how to best prevent further issues. They were willing to change course when we were initially going to use brick to repair 6 old medallion sites, they put in lime stone circles/ smooth plain medallions instead at the cost it would have been to repair with brick. We hope these repairs prevent water seepage into our buildings walls and it seems the work was done very well and will solve the issue we were having. Only time will tell.
Description of Work: I received estimates from 4 companies, 3 from Angie's List and 1 from a neighborhood group referral. The representative from the company gave the best overall answers to the problems we wanted addressed - water seeping into the third floor walls from the outside of our building. the work preformed was, lifting up the limestone copping and placing a water barrier flshing and weep ropes, replaced coppings. Removed parging(a cement band that was used to cover up an old cornice removal area). Place split face lime stone pieces in that area. Installed flashing above extending brick and limestone sills x2 where brick extends out to right and left of aluminum flashing. Grind out and tuckpoint from third floor windows up to previously rebuilt bricks and then just tuckpointing that area up to roof.

Peter was extremely nice and willing to help me out - he asked me to send him pictures from the home inspection report so that he could help advise on the approximate cost. 24 hours after I sent the pics, he called me back with some great info - and this was on the day before Thanksgiving.... Of the tuckpointing companies I called, he was the only one who was willing to put in so much effort to help me out and estimate the costs. I will most definitely be calling him back when the weather is warmer to have the actual work done on the house!
Description of Work: No work was performed; I called for an estimate because we had received the results of a home inspection and were trying to determine how much to ask for from the sellers. Included in the report was some tuckpointing that needed to be done as well as a chimney repair.

My overall experience was very good. I would recommend them. I phoned and made an appointment for an estimate for chimney repair. Voytek arrived on time, was polite, professional and discussed the work, answered my questions, informed me it would be scheduled in about 6-8 weeks. He provided a verbal estimate immediately and followed-up with an emailed written estimate in a day. The work was scheduled on week 6. The men arrived on time (before 8am) and started to set up. Voytek arrived shortly after and again discussed the job, asked if I had any questions and then left. The men did a good job (from what I can see) and the brick and mortar colors match well with the rest of the house. The finished the job in less than a day and cleaned up pretty good after the work. The next day (Saturday), Voytek phoned me at home to ensure I was happy with the work.

The customer has a stone staircase that has endured years of water penetration. The staircase joints have eroded to a point where the entire structure needs to be rebuilt and damaged stone replaced. This is what we discussed with the customer at the site, and the quote for the said scope was submitted. Resetting the stone at top of the staircase, without addressing the substructure, will yield an unsound staircase that will need additional repair relatively soon. Please contact us if we can be of any further assistance.
