We had called probably 10 other people to try to solve our water pooling in the yard issue and no one came up with a solution that made much sense. Ian came up with a great solution to route the water around to the front of the house and direct it toward the street. Since the yard was higher at the front of the house a pump needed to be installed as well. It took about a week to fully install it and they did a great job. Now we get no pooling of water at all in our back yard. The water drains well into the street, it doesn't collect up there either so we didn't create another problem. We've had a few heavy rains since the system was installed and it feels like it's proven itself. This has been an amazing addition to our home. It has relieved so much stress for my wife and myself. Absolutely would recommend Ian for flood control issues for your yard.
Description of Work: Our back yard is a little bit lower than the surrounding area. During storms where it would rain > 1" our back yard would fill up with water like a giant pool. It could fill up so much it could get into our basement through a door from the yard to the basement, which was a disaster. We would get water pooling a dozen times a year.

Could not have gone better.
Description of Work: Major landscaping work done to save our home. The home we purchased resides on a hill, over time the neighborhood has been overbuilt, thus causing drainage issues to homes downstream. Our backyard is basically unusable 1/2 the time of the year. He created two swale plans, one for water to re-route along the north side of my home and the other to re-route around the south side. Ian was great every step of the way, delivered on time and on budget. His crew was great to work with and his work is impeccable. This was a 3 year project in the making. Our permitting process with the village was a nightmare.

It went very well. Due to poor planning on OUR END, Ian and his team could not book us into their schedule until into the fall. They worked diligently to finish before the weather turned. The team proactively provided insights into what to expect with every stage worked cleanly and diligently; they minimized the dirt and disruption while the old hard-scape was being removed and the drainage was being installed. The men on the ground were courteous and respectful of us and our property. Finally, they came back in early spring to take a walk through and completed some minor finishing touches. My landscape designer and others including neighbors complimented the quality of the work.
Description of Work: Ian and his team performed front and back garden prepping and laying brick work. This included a combination of drainage work including french drainage system and laying a front and back garden patio with stones and pavers. The effort included a seating wall and a new front door stoop and step redesign and running a gas line for our future gas fire pit.

We had very prompt response when answering our inquiry, and for setting up a time. Unfortunately, the time wasn't followed and he surprised us with a morning visit as I was getting ready for work. We started the conversation with just our thoughts on the backyard and what needed to be done. From the get go, Ian was dismissive and wanted to expand scope. I explained that we would definitely be interested in recommendations (what do we know about landscaping projects vs. the professionals?!) but would need to see other recommendations as an amendment to the quote. This way we could compare and contrast landscaping partners with our budget restrictions. When I showed pictures of our thoughts, he said that these pictures probably weren't laid right and that it was just for show. He didn't offer any suggestions, he didn't ask questions. He gathered his things and said that what I was asking for was probably out of budget (even though we never discussed a budget cap or restriction). To be honest, I felt like Ian was dismissive because I am a woman. He mentioned my husband several times (as he was the initial point of contact), and the conversation might have been more constructive between them ... which is disappointing. I would never call on Roche again for any landscaping needs.
Description of Work: We had Ian come out to give us a quote on a backyard project. This included leveling of the yard, laying of permeable patio area, and we were open to other work that needed to be done as well for a safe and useable backyard.

Response from Roche Landscaping
It is unfortunate that this customer had a a perceived negative interaction. I have never had a complaint like this in the 20 year history of my business interaction. The appointment time was set up by her husband so that is predisposed to miscommunication. I arrived at the time and date I had allocated in my calendar. The description of work did not fall within the parameter of the services we provide due to the descriptions of tasks and products suggested by the customer. After a short dialog with this customer, I decided that it was not a project that my company was going to bid. I informed the customer of this and told her that I was appreciative of the opportunity. This customer's gender had absolutely nothing to do with anything at all and I am offended that she even suggested and assumed that was a factor for anything. I treat everyone with respect and I consider this complaint completely out of bounds in our limited 10-15 minute interaction. It is unfortunate that such a review was posted by someone I never did work for and treated with respect during the appointment. Any other customer I have done work for male or female can attest to my character.

Basement seepage is under control. Ian will if necessary come back (not part of quote) and dig down to the exterior foundation if there are seepage areas that haven't shown up thus far. More than 1/2 the basement is finished and I don't rellish removing drywall.
Description of Work: Lawn grading, sodding and a lot of drainage work using 4" and 6" pvc piping to minimize basement seepage. Drains with catch basins were installed where needed. The back and front yards were a mess after storms until Ian put his mind towards solving the problem. We moved gutter drains close to the street. I bought the house from a rehabber / flipper and all things involving landscaping were in total neglect for years. I had bids of $15,000 from people like US Waterproofing and Ian was the first person I found that thought busting up the basement perimeter and adding inside drain tile might be a waste of money and I be totally dependent forever on sump pump reliability and sufficient battery backup power.

Ian was very thorough in his explanation of the job, especially for achieving the best water drainage on the property. His rating regarding punctuality and responsiveness was not a reflection of his professionalism or attentiveness. It was a result of his crew's ability to work when the weather cooperated. This summer presented an exceptional challenge due to storms and rain. His follow up communication was excellent. His workers were hard working and efficient. We would hire Roche again without any hesitation.

They are very good. It’s been fine. We had an issue and they took care of it. There have been no problems with them. They didn’t charge us anything for the job they did. They just took care of it. They did a good job for us and there was one issue when the work was being done and actually, they redid this one part that there was a problem with. They were very good. We had a very good experience with them. I would recommend them. We’ve had no problems. They came right out.

Ian is a sod scientist. He came out in September and recommended work be done in November to minimize watering needs in fall. He gave options of kind of sod to install with his own experience with each. Also, gave advice on when and what to treat sod with annually on my own.

It went a little slower that expected because some problems arose. The owner, Ian, solved the problems and continued the project. Ian kept on top of the project and had his crew do over certain thinks that he thought were just not the way he wanted it. Weather also delayed the project 100 degree days and storms have a way of doing that. When finished, they cleaned up the area and even replaced the sod that was damaged. I would highly recommend Roche Landscaping, and would not hesitate in using them again!
Description of Work: They first had to remove an old cement patio which was rather thick. They put a footing or foundation around the patio. They added material to fill to the proper level. They installed a seat wall in the corners and then laid the pavers.

Working with Ian was an absolute pleasure, as he was thoughtful in his design approach, communicative and completed the work with the utmost quality. The drainage issue was a serious problem for our backyard, and we asked Ian to come out to assess the situation and provide his ideas on a solution. We were open to any and all option. He looked at all possible avenues: re-routing gutters, re-grading the property, non-mechanical drainage, etc. I appreciated that Ian was looking for simple and inexpensive solutions first as they would be less prone to breakdowns and require less maintenance. Unfortunately, the geometry of our yard did not lend itself to such options. After a lot of thought and effort, the best solution wound up being to install an external sump pump within a dry well and routing french drains into it. He worked with engineers at the sump pump manufacturer to account for the maximum water flow given the surface area of our yard. The task was a laborious one, as Ian and his team needed to tear up a good portion of our yard in order to install the drains, drain lines and dry well. Everything was positioned in an unobtrusive manner, such that when the work was completed, one doesn't even know that it is there. Ian's electrician set up the power source for the pump and the entire yard was re-graded and re-sodded with new grass to complete the work. We were very happy with Ian's communication during the entire process, as he was very responsive via email and phone with any questions we had that came up along the way. The system has been up-and-running since October and seems to be doing a great job keeping the yard dry. In regard to the stone walkway, this project was a simple one compared to the drainage problem. Ian took some sample stones from the patio we already had in place. He was able to match one set (bluestone) but our soldier stones had been discontinued by the manufacturer. Ian suggested some replacement options. His team laid out the project and put the walkway in place, greatly improving the overall aesthetics of our backyard. We are very happy with the work performance and we wouldn't hesitate to use Roche Landscaping again.
Description of Work: We required two different projects in our backyard. The first project was to improve the drainage. Our backyard is the lowest point on our property and during times of heavy rain, it would have significant standing water. The second project was to install a paved walkway from our garage to our house, maintaining the same look/quality as the patio that was already in place. We hired Roche landscaping to perform these two tasks. To alleviate the drainage issue, Ian and his team installed a thoughtfully designed french drain system leading to an external sump-pump pit that evacuates the water to a location away from the backyard. For the walkway, Ian and his team installed a hardscaped path that matched the blue stone of our patio.

Roche was good in scheduling, some wet weather set us back a week or two but he was good in communciating up front that his work was somewhat weather dependent. Work was done very well. Overall very happy, we'll use again for another small project with pavers.
Description of Work: We have a relatively new house, about 6 years old. Our front steps are pavers, and with the settling of the house the pavers began to 'detach' from the porch and the rest of the house. Had a few estimates, and every one (including Roche) said the builder took the cheap way out, didnt pour any concrete to build a 'pad' that would have went up and down as the foundation settled. Anyway, most guys wanted to completely re-do the steps, pour concrete, etc. and Roche he could also do that, but said let's try to just re-lay the pavers, maybe the settled parts are done, that would be far cheaper. I did get other quotes then, just for the relaying of the pavers without the concrete, and all were a bit more. Roche was good in scheduling, some wet weather set us back a week or two but he was good in communciating up front that his work was somewhat weather dependent. Work was done very well.

I was looking to have my back yard re-sodded because it had bare patches and looked terrible. I had put up a new garage and had new concrete gangway put in. Ian Roche was recommended by a friend at work so I e-mailed him and he responded with a quote the very next day. Needless to say, I was impressed and accepted it. Mr. Roche kept in touch and informed me when the work was going to be one and recommended the type of sod that I should put in for the best results. I would recommend him to everyone.
Description of Work: Removed old grass from back yard. Graded, leveled off ground. Put top soil down and fertilizer. Installed new sod. Did a very professional job.

Ian kept me informed during the entire process sending emails every day letting me know when they would come out and how the project was progressing. Have to say of all the contractors I've worked with he did the best of letting me know what was going on since I wasn't there during the day. Although it was going to take two days with the rain, it extended a couple more but it wasn't frustrating because I always got an email from Ian saying when they would come out and planned to do.
Description of Work: Our backyard floods since we are on a low point and the neighbors yard drains into ours. The ground is clay so it doesn't absorb much runoff. Roche Landscaping installed a small drain system that leads to a storm sewer on our property. They installed a shut off valve and an extra valve to regulate flow.

It went very well. This was a small job and we laid sod late in the year. The quote was very professional with options provided. They came out withing a couple days of me giving the order. Ian Roche showed up on time with his crew and directed them to get started after confirming with me direction of grading, then supervised them personally. They were finished in a few hours. Very pleasant experience
