The projects he has done have come out almost perfect. He is neat, very professional, generally on time, and the crew is also generally very good. He will NOT leave your job unless you are fully satisfied with it. He will make sure he will do whatever he can to make sure you are happy. He is one of the best contractors I have ever worked with and I couldn't rate him higher.
Description of Work: Most recently he helped repaired some sandstone with our fireplace. Mainly, he totally redid my living room. He patched and replastered the walls and ceiling of my living room and also put a color plaster finish on the walls. In coordination with another company, they restored and redid sections of a mural on a ceiling (surrounded by other plaster/repairs).

He was extremely knwledgealble and I got the impression he was the man for the job. Ryan came over and gave a quote. Was very personable. The quote I thought was reasonable for what he knew it would require. We ended up going a different avenue, but I thought Ryan was extremely professional. I will definitely use the company in the future.

The dining room wall was in a really bad shape and instead of having it gutted down they put a fibreglass mesh on the wall and then they skim coated it all. They re-build the cove molding that had got water damaged over the years and was falling apart. They did an excellent job. It was expensive but he is good. Everything went as per schedule. As matter of fact he came and moved the schedule up and everything went as per planned. As for the timing of the job he said it would take 7 to 8 days and he took 8 days. He is super helpful. He helped me find the water leak which was causing the water damage on the plastered cove molding. Again he co-ordinated with the roofer to build some flashing. He is the kind of guy I can call him and ask him for something and he would try to help. I will use this provider in the future.
Description of Work: I had Renaissance Restoration to rebuild some cove molding and also re-plastered the dining room wall.

This contractor return to my home for the job third time. For information regarding my previous impression of this company’s work, the reader should refer to my review dated 01/09/11. I had arranged with the owner, Ryan, that following the holidays he would come back to perform the following repair: Remove loose deteriorated plaster from cornice. Apply a bonding agent and repair cornice with molding plaster and lime, blending to existing cornice. Patch a 3’x3’x area of wall below cornice to a smooth paintable finish. In addition to this work I asked Ryan to provide a quote on water-damaged plaster in a 2nd floor closet. As has been my experience in the past, he and his associate began by thoroughly prepping the work areas. He was aware that I recently had carpet installed, and therefore took great care to make sure my floor was protected. They then jumped right on both jobs, working all day and returning the next for an additional several hours. The results were very good. It should be noted, Ryan showed me how the closet damage was worst than both of us imagined. However, at the completion, the cost for the closet repair was a real nominal fee, close to being almost free. I have no hesitation recommending Renaissance Restoration for plaster work. It does not surprise me that he received the 2010 Super Service Reward from Angie’s List.

Approximately a year after discussing with Ryan two repair/remodeling projects at our home, we decided to contract for one in order to get an idea of the quality of his work. The initial project involved the repair of our water damaged plaster living room ceiling. In addition to the repair we wanted the texture coating removed and replaced with a smooth surface. When I hired Ryan, I did not know he was a perfectionist. He approaches his work with enthusiasm, a lot of energy, and a keen eye for details. At various points during the work he would show and explain what was being done and why. It was apparent he wanted the job done well and right - something many homeowners feel can only be accomplished if they do it themselves. The end-product was fabulous. Now I have a beautiful living room ceiling. My satisfaction with his work led me, without hesitation, to contract with him to take on the second, and more challenging project. As was with the living room, there was significant water damage in the home office area that destroyed a large section of the crown plaster molding and the wall below. In this area of the home I also wanted the texture ceiling removed. Ryan stared at the damage for a long time before commenting. He then spoke about the need for him to develop a tin molding in order to replicate the style of the existing plaster molding in the damage area. He also suggested skimming all the walls of the room, noting small areas of damage. Because I viewed Ryan's recommendation for skimming of the walls as another indication of his perfectionist nature, I contracted only for repairing of the damaged molding and wall. I later requested a revision of the contract to include the skimming. Ryan and one of his partners arrived on the scheduled date at the agreed upon time and proceeded to transform what was a horrid situation into the beautiful room it was originally. He restored the plaster molding that had been totally destroyed by water damage. Note this - because his crown molding looked better than the original, he volunteered to improve the appearance of the remaining molding free of charge. “I don't want someone to think that (the original molding) is my work.” To summarize… the guy does good work. We will have him back for a couple of other minor/moderate projects.
Description of Work: Project #1: Company removed loose, deteriorated plaster and all textured plaster from living room ceiling. Company then rescrewed ceiling on joists with screws and washers, applied bonding agent, embedded mesh with basecoat, and applied finish coat to a smooth, paintable finish. Project #2: Company removed loss deteriorated plaster and texture from home office ceiling, cornice and walls. Company then rescrewed ceiling on joists with screws and washers, applied oil primer and a bonding agent, embedded mesh with basecoat and applied finish coat to a smooth paintable finish on ceiling and portions of water damaged walls. Company also repaired the cornice, blending to existing, and skimmed water damaged area of walls in room.

They seemed like a professional outfit. They were extremely responsive. They came and visited and got the quote to us in a timely manner. They seemed to be a lot bigger of a contractor then I tend to hire. I prefer to hire a smaller business owner. Their quote was the same as another painter. We just decided to go with the smaller company.

Ryan was able to come out and give us a quote very quickly. Once we had the source of the water damage identified and repaired, he fit us in very quickly and got to work. He was extremely professional and obviously cares a great deal about getting the details right and the overall quality of his work. This was easily the best experience I have ever had with a contractor - I will definitely hire him again and recommend him with no reservations. He's slightly more expensive than some others, but very up front about costs and the high quality of the work really made him a bargain.

He is very knowledgable in his art form as well as in construction/remodeling in general. He pays attention to details, does excelent work, is reliable and goes the extra mile to make suggestions to improve the remodeling experience and results. If your in need of a good plaster man... Ryan is your man.
Description of Work: Ryan, replastered several rooms in my 1927 bungalow. Before the work began the walls had numerous small cracks due to the age and settling of the building over time (normal for old buildings with lathe and plaster). Ryan came in and made the walls look like new putting a skim coat of plaster over the old walls. He also puts a nylon mesh over the old wall before applying the new plaster. This prevents further cracks from developing in the future.(Quality work)

Ryan and his assistant were prompt, courteous and efficient. The plastering work is first rate. The access panel had to be cut to fit around the plumbing fixtures under the sink, but I've installed some metal sleeves around the pipes and that has cleaned up the appearance, and it makes sense to have put it in. Overall, they did a great job.
Description of Work: Ryan repaired a plaster wall in a bathroom that had been opened to fix a plumbing problem. On his recommendation, we installed an access panel so that the wall won't have to be reopened if there are any future plumbing issues.

Ryan was excellent at assessing which ceilings were in real danger of failure and which merely needed repair. His was prompt with an estimate and in making the repairs. He guided us to other skilled tradesmen (electricians, painters) to help us return unused sconce outlets to function and to reasonable sources for antique sconces. He is a perfectionist in his work and capable of the finest decorative plaster work--a master craftsman. He was on time and worked hard to contain the dust and cleaned up daily.
Description of Work: Ryan repaired and replastered detailed plaster moldings on coved ceilings in a sunroom, living room, and dining room. He completely replaced a plaster ceiling in a bedroom. Also put a decorative plaster finish on the fireplace wall. Patched holes made for wiring in a 45 ft. barrel ceiling of a hallway. He provided valuable decorating suggestions and created a beautiful fireplace wall with a suedelike finish with a 3-stage application of special decorative plaster.

Ryan came out to our apartment and spent a while with us, both talking about our current projects, as well as brainstorming on other projects and discussing his expertise with older homes. Ryan spent a TON of time with us and gave us numerous other names and resources for other work we were looking to have done. Within a week of quoting our project, Ryna squeezed us in and was at our place doing the work. I left him our key, and he called me at work with regular updates. We had a few small unexpected situations arise and Ryan did a great job coming up with creative solutions. Perhaps most impressive, Ryan called me the day before the project was going to start, with a better and cheaper way tot do part of the project. Both my wife and I were thrilled with the end reuslt and would use Ryan again in a heartbeat.
Description of Work: My wife and I were looking to remove a ring of wood molding in our dining room and plaster over the resulting damage. In addition, we also had a number of other plaster projects we were considering, as well as some masonry work (removing security bars and tuckpointing) to be done on our back windows.

The process went well. He got started a day late. He didn't account for traffic and things like that. Still, he definitely did what he said he would do. I liked the fact that he priced everything out beforehand, by the day. His work on the curved entryway looked really professional and excellent.

Ryan came out the day we called him to look at the job. He came back with a bid a few days later. He started the job a week after that and finished it in the time frame he said he would. He and his crew did a great job. They even stayed an extra day to finish up some stuff that was not part of the original spec for the job. They were very clean during the job and did a good job cleaning up afterwards. Ryan knows a lot about old houses and had helpful advice on other projects we're working on. All in all, a good experience.

Ryan was very prompt responding to my request for an estimate. He started the job soon after I accepted his estimate. He provided recommendations for the work and the rationale for the type of work he did. His estimate was reasonable for the type of work based on the other estimates that I received. He was knowledgeable and practical about work on old homes. He arrived on time and worked around our work schedule. He and his workers were very neat and cleaned up after themselves. When he found some wiring that was substandard, he pointed it out and made recommendations. He quickly helped find an electrician that was able to come in immediately and make the adjustments so that this did not delay the plastering unreasonably. I would highly recommend RENAISSANCE RESTORATION and would use them again.

Ryan returned our call right away and provided a quote within two days. He bid lower than other reputable Angie's List contractors and we felt comfortable with him immediately. The guys started within a few days, fitting us in before beginning another major project. Similarly, they started work quickly when we called them on the second phase of our project. Renaissance Restoration's work is top quality & we're extremely pleased with the results. What really set Ryan apart was the time he took to explain the work he was doing and why. Where he felt that we could do repairs on our own, he even provided extra supplies to get us started and later called to check up on how we were doing! He gave us advice on how to restore other areas in the house as well. We can't recommend Ryan highly enough. He is a great guy who is a talented professional who knows a great deal about historical restoration. We look forward to working with him again.
Description of Work: Ryan and his team repaired our plaster following an electrical rewire. They repaired holes in the living room, foyer, dining room, staircase and master bedroom - about 75 holes in total. They also fixed plaster "buckling" in a few rooms where we had significant cracks. Everything was restored in a manner which was consistent with the original state of the plaster - Ryan matched the texture of each wall perfectly, "roughing up" the walls to make the patches blend with the old walls. We subsequently hired Ryan to perform a second job at $1400 - he repaired the huge rout in our hallway ceiling, repaired a huge hole in the den ceiling and did a skim coat in the den.

I was very happy with Ryan. He's a skilled plasterer, hardworking, completely honest, and a clean-cut, professional young man. In the bedroom wall repair the wall required rebuilding in places, more work than was envisioned in the estimate. Ryan nevertheless undertook this cheerfully and without complaint, since he promised to fix all plaster problems within the house for a flat price. Ryan also installed mechanical access hatches in the basement ceiling, which were beyond the scope of his contract. After he completed the major repairs he came back a couple of times without charge to fix a few other small problems which had escaped earlier notice. Ryan also has the requisite skill to repair and reproduce elaborate plaster molding, and he beautifully refashioned a corner of the crown molding by the entranceway which had been water damaged. I would not hesitate to recommend Renaissance Restoration. Ryan offers old world craftsmanship at a down to earth price.
Description of Work: I contacted Renaissance Restoration to repair a bedroom wall which had suffered water damage and was blistering. Ryan Buman responded to my call promptly and prepared an estimate to do this work as well as repair other stress cracks throughout my home (the product of settling over time) and repair the ceiling molding in the living room.

I have been a wall painter for 20 years, and I know a good or a bad plaster job when I see one. I was very particular in choosing who would do our repair as we live in an historic building with original construction, and I did not want a bunch of hacks coming in and doing a "patch job". I wanted a restoration, and that is what I got. Renaissance did a fantastic job, and they did it very fast. This is a professional company, and it is obvious their artisans have training and skills. We have original silk wallpaper in the stairwell and it is very expensive and very easy to damage. Renaissance did an amazing job protecting it! Not one scratch. The final results of their work were excellent as well. Flat, smooth, no seams or ridges. I also have to give this company major props for going above and beyond the call of duty by identifying structural damage done by another repairman years ago, and at their own time & cost, fixing the problem. Top notch.
Description of Work: Repair or severely water damaged plaster ceiling in a 1905 original construction brick building. This work included rotten lathe repair, hole patch, and severe crack repair in vaulted stairwell ceiling. (Crack repair was also done along the entire length of the 4 flight stairwell ceiling.)

My experience was fantastic. Ryan and his crew scraped down the loose pieces of stucco, added a layer of mesh to prevent cracks from appearing later, applied a rough coat and finally a smooth coat of plaster to make my walls brand new. Ryan's a plaster specialist, and he took the time to explain why it pays in the long run to take extra steps (rather than a doing quick fix that may not hold up, which is what another contractor proposed). The final product is exceptional. My walls actually feel like glass. Renaissance went above and beyond. First, by recommending that I do some minor electric work before the plaster (I hadn't thought of that, but I'm glad I did it), later by telling me the type of primer to use on new plaster walls, making sure I called him if cracks reappeared so he could fix them for free, and even getting a paint quote for my project without my asking for it. Ryan was slightly more expensive than my other bids, but I think it was well worth the incremental cost.
Description of Work: I have a condo built in 1927 and had three rooms with plaster walls that had a thick coat of stucco on top (I assumed it was used to cover up cracks in the original plaster walls). I wanted to get rid of the stucco and have smooth walls again while maintaining my plaster crown molding and decorative arches in 3 doorways.

I am extremely happy with this work. Ryan really knows his stuff, takes pride in his work, has an unusually strong work ethic, goes out of his way to do the right thing, and is a nice guy to boot. He is not cheap, but is fair and well worth the price. He provided ample info and advice to help me make the right decisions, particularly regarding cost. When we had challenges with scheduling, we were able to work them out easily. At one point Ryan brought in a team of 5 guys who worked until 10 pm on a Friday night in order to get the job done in time. He left one section of wall undone because he knew my electrician would put holes in the wall and he did not want me to have to pay again to fix that later. When he returned, he also fixed an electrical hole in another room, which was not part of the contract, and never asked for more money. He also left tools and materials for my use because he knew I needed them. My house looks great and I am 100% confident the money was well spent.
Description of Work: I bought a vintage condo which required a fair amount of plaster work. RR removed the wallpaper, patched, and skimmed 4 walls in the living room (20 x 13), did the same in the master bedroom (15 x 13) and redid the ceiling in that room, and finally removed a stucco-type finish on a ceiling in a third room (11 x 12) and skimmed it.
