Howard is very nice. He is very responsive and was easy to work with. My old gutters were just not getting the job done and had caused some interior damage in one of the bedrooms. Also, the downspout of the original gutter was located right next to the back steps, so every winter we got an ice slick. All the contractors I received an estimate from suggested oversized gutters and Redstone had the lowest quote and and also was the only one to offer to repair the interior damage. The work was done quickly, within three days, and with no mess or difficulties. The men who came to do the work were nice and professional. I got exactly what I wanted. The gutters now drain all the water out into the front yard. They look nice and do the job. My wall was repaired and repainted and they did a good job with that as well.
Description of Work: Installed new gutters and repaired interior wall damage.

Overall it went very well. Howard was responsible, easy to communicate with, and professional. His team was highly skilled and worked in a timely manner. The cost was quite reasonable. There was a lot done in the beginning, and towards the end it slowed down a little. Keeping communication open helped with this, and in the end everything was completed with quality. The major renovations were done within the estimated timeline, and the smaller odds and ends were done within a few weeks after the expected finish. Working with everyone from Redstone Builders was the best part of the entire renovation process.

Company was pleasant, on time and explained everything as it applied to the stair work required to be done. The stairway to the 2nd floor was sagging at the time. Redstone explained and provided a written estimate for all the work to be done to replace it. While Redstone was not selected for the job, I would have no hesitation to call them for any other owrk to be done in my home.

Our building was experiencing considerable water damage from cracks and crevices in the brick and limestone on the second and third floor balconies. Redstone began by removing the crumbling tile floor on the third floor and the ceiling on the second floor. Composite decking was installed on the third floor and a bead board ceiling on the second. There were extensive masonry repairs which also included repairs to the front entry stairs and first floor concrete floor. Iron railings were then installed on the second and third floors to comply with city building codes. Howard was very responsive to our collective concerns. Although the project took longer than expected the results are well worth the wait.

Like many garages in Chicago, ours has a roof top deck. We developed leaks in the garage roof where water would trickle down the inside of the front and rear walls at specific points. I called 3 contractors for estimates. Each one had different approaches to fix the problem, one even recommended a total replacement of the wood railings on the steps and around the sides at the top. Of the three, Howard Rothstein's estimate seemed to be the most reasonable. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to construction work, but the way he described the problem and his approach to fixing it made sense to me. Better still, it was the lowest estimate and required only one day to make the repairs. He didn't need to replace any wood at all. He arrived with two other workers on time at 8am, got them started, and left them to complete the job. They were finished and gone by 5pm. I could not be more pleased with his work and the professionalism of his crew. Job well done.

Mr. Rothstein came to our home on 6/24/2014, looked at the window and said he would provide me an estimate for replacing. I stated that if window casing needed to be replaced, we would prefer black on the outside and white on the inside. On 7/1, I called to find out when I would be receiving my quote. I was told in the evening or the following morning. When I didn't receive it, I called him, again on the 2nd. He told me his wife would me emailing it to me soon. I asked if he could just give a rough idea over the phone, since I've been waiting for a week, and he told me approximately $1400 - most of the cost being due to the colors I requested. Another supplier had told me they could just replace the glass for less than half that price. When I asked Mr. Rothstein if he could just replace the glass, he said he had a contact that probably could and that it would bring the price down several hundred dollars. Why he didn't offer to provide me with an option and why he took so long to get back to me is a mystery. If he didn't want to do the work, I would have much preferred if had just told me the day he was here to quote the job. He would have wasted much less of my time.

I was visiting a rental property I own that is being "managed" by a property management company. I come to town annually just to check things out. Although the management company does quarterly inspections of my building, during my visit I was alarmed to find that the wood in the stairway to the top of my garage deck was rotting and the stairway moved when I walked on it. I was only in town for a few days and wanted to get the situation under control before I left. Howard was able to come out that same day and give me a quote. The price seemed reasonable, and I was satisfied with the way he described how they would go about doing the work, and the fact that they could get started the next day. I took a bit of a chance - normally for a job like this I would get a couple other quotes - but I was worried about the safety of my tenants. I gave them a deposit check and Redstone did the job they promised, just like they promised. They pulled the dangerous stairway off the garage the following day, and within 3 days a new, sturdy stairway was built in its place with quality materials. They even billed me since they knew I would be out of town when the job finished. I couldn't have been happier with their responsiveness, professionalism, and quality of work.

The first two times I used Redstone, Howard (owner) and I never met. We talked on the phone. He came to my building while I was at work. Both jobs were external. He took pictures, told me what he was going to do, gave me the estimates, did the work (after I accepted) and I sent a check. We did not meet until Dec. 2012 when I contacted him about painting my 3rd floor apartment. I accepted his quote and they started within a week. I had just had my wood floors refinished and was very concerned that they be well protected. The people that Redstone used were professional, very neat and on time. The job was done in a short period of time. It looks beautiful. I would definitely use Redstone again.
Description of Work: I had used Redstone for a small job in 2010. I contacted them thru the yellow pages and talked to Howard, the owner. I wanted to have the windows on the north side of my three flat capped. We did everything over the phone. I used them again in 2011 when I noticed some water damage on the third floor ceiling of the third floor hallway. I had recently had roof work done. Again, Howard came, inspected the area, took pictures and gave me a quote. He totally repaired the area - the flashing had come away from the building. Again, a reasonable price - $1,500. In 2012, I needed to have extensive interior painting done in my third floor apartment. I had had all new ceiling and floor moulding installed - new wood. They did a beautiful job - worked very clean. The job was done in a week and a half. He charged $4,800. I would definitely use Rodstone again.

I don't even know where to begin... I am so incredibly pleased with every aspect of my experience with Redstone Builders. So much so, that we're already talking to them about some other work we'd like done on the interior of our house. Howard, the owner, is great . From the moment my husband and I met him, it was clear that he doesn't play games like some other contractors. He listened to what we wanted, and made recommendations on what materials to use and what options would solve specific issues. We are very price conscious, so Howard was transparent with us about the differences in cost between options. He let us know that the choice was always ours, and reassured us if the price wasn't in our comfort zone that we could revisit the plan and remove or adjust options to make it work. I can't stress what a relief this was, considering our experience with the previous contractor we'd contacted for a quote. Before I go on to describe how happy I am with the work they did, first let me list out some of the other reasons why I can't say enough great stuff about Redstone: + Communication with Howard was great - he answered questions and returned calls promptly. + Punctuality was superb - Howard arrived when he said he would (the one time he was running behind, he called to let us know), and his crew was here every day that work was being done from 8-4 like clockwork. + Other work they've done is great too - When we were considering Redstone, Howard gave us a list of porches they'd done to give us an idea of what they're capable of - let me just say wow. If his professionalism hadn't sold us, the quality of their work did. Now, as for the work they did for us: WE LOVE OUR PORCH. John, the carpenter, is wonderful and amazing at what he does. Sometimes it's the little things that make the biggest difference - the beveling on the custom base caps to match the posts - Replacing a couple of floor boards to ensure the newel post lined up with the new stairs - grinding the corners on the reclaimed newels to ensure they all match... Stuff you don't think to ask for. Small details that show a pride in work that isn't common these days. By the time the work was done, we were the proud owners of a porch so great looking, we've almost driven past our house because we don't recognize it! What else can I say? If you want to work with someone that you can trust, who will do the work at a fair price, and who will leave you with something better than you imagined - go with Redstone. A++ all around for these guys!
Description of Work: Redstone performed a much needed update to our front porch. Replaced railings, stairs and pillars. Wrapped soffit & facia with wood. Replaced ceiling with wood trim. Replaced lattice. And painted and stained everything to our specifications.

Very well. We went back to Redstone after a good experience with a larger project in 2006. Redstone gave advice on options for the remodel from the outset, pointed out potential problems to assist in the choice of fixtures, scheduled the work to suit us, started close to the original target date (knowing that we had flexibility), carried out the work always aware of minimizing disruption to us and always cleaning up at the end of the day. When a cabinet that was to have been built in became, because of the features we wanted, too complicated, Redstone found a cabinet-maker to build the unit to fit and to match the other woodwork in the room. Communication was excellent, with prompt replies to emails or phone calls. Redstone's craftsmen take pride in their work and know what they are doing on a broad range of construction, plumbing, electrical and finish work. (That's you, John!). Doesn't play the game of low-balling the estimate and then discovering a lot of add-on costs along the way. Negatives: significantly overestimated the amount of file needed for shower enclosure, miscommunication about scheduling at one point near the end. But none of the negatives even come close to being deal-breakers. A highly recommended small business in the best spirit of American entrepreneurship.
Description of Work: Gutted to the studs 1 and 1/2 baths. Installed tub, vanities, toilets, cabinets, lights, exhaust fan etc. supplied by us. Repiped one set of supply lines, hooked up all plumbing to fixtures, replaced lighting, did tile, drywall, painting, trim etc. Price given here therefore excludes most, but not all, of the fixtures.

The job went extremely well. Howard gave me a three week estimated time frame; he completed the job in little over one week. We were blessed with fantastic weather for April. All of Howard's employees and subcontractors were top notch. They were professional and knowledgeable. They all showed up when they were supposed to, and finished their part of the project in a timely manner, and respectful of the other parts of the project. I now have an almost new garage, and which has been praised by my tenants and neighbors. Howard offered much advice to me about what should be done and how it should be done. His standards are of the highest caliber, and he was present during most of the construction work to see that it was properly carried out.
Description of Work: I own a six unit apartment building with a detached five car garage. I hired Redstone Builders to do work on the garage. They removed the existing garage roof and supporting joists, the garage doors, the headers above the garagedoors, interior cement block walls that were deteriorating, garage door openers, light fixtures, and the separators between the garage doors. They hauled away the debris, and installed new roof joists/rafters, plywood sheathing over them, and a new rubber garage roof above that. New separators and headers were installed. Then new electrical components and ceiling lights were installed. New garage doors and openers were installed, a specialty brand recommended by Howard Rothstein, Redstone's owner. Then the new outside wood trim and plywood was primed and painted. An existing exterior light fixture was reconnected, and electrical outlets were installed inside along with the switches for the ceiling light fixtures. Additional buttons to open and close the garage doors were installed adjacent to the garage doors themselves, as a supplement to the standard garage door openers installed next to the passenger doors to the garage across from the mechanized garage doors.

Excellent! They were extremely prompt (my wife and I joked that they must have waited outside our place until their watches said exactly 8:00:00 am before ringing our buzzer), professional, fast, clean, and did a great job. They built a poly "tent" around their work area to ensure minimal - if any - drywall dust would escape (we didn't see any). Everything was as promised: On-time, exactly the amount quoted, etc. They were also very stand-up about repairing a light fixture they accidentally broke - they helped us find an identical replacement fixture, paid for it, and installed it at no extra charge. We would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: Water was leaking through the ceiling in our kitchen, then later our family room. Redstone quickly found that the vent pipes above our ceiling were not connected and/or sealed properly, and condensation was dripping, causing the problem. They cut into the ceilings, repaired the pipes, replaced the drywall, and painted. While the ceiling was open, they found an additional area that needed similar repairs, which they also performed. The $2,900 is the total amount charged for three separate areas (cut drywall, repair pipes, replace drywall, paint).

It was a lot of odds and ends that needed to be done and I wanted someone who could do it all and finish it well. And because it's a rental, we also wanted a reasonable price. From the beginning Howard was good to work with and made sure that it was all finished to how we wanted it done.
Description of Work: Howard did a number of things to help maintain our 2-flat rental including: about 6 new windows + aluminum wrap for window exterior , new trex decking on an outside deck, refurbish original oak front door, new storm door, some washing and staining of deck/original doors, some exterior painting.

Overall working with Redstone was a great experience. I asked them to work within an extremely tight timeframe -- three weeks from the time I agreed to their estimate until the time the work was completed. They were responsive their work was high quality, they did what they said they were going to do, on time and within budget. Also, they were able to repaint the upstairs bathroom when the first color I chose was not what I thought it would be. In addition, they alerted me to water damage around the skylight in my bathroom, and subsequently worked around the skylight replacement that I worked on separately with my condominium roofer. The only thing I would note is that kitchen countertop and backsplash work is outside of Redstone's scope. When I asked, as a second project, if they would be able to install a new kitchen countertop, Howard stated that they don't typically do that kind of work. All in all, a very good company to work with.
