I found Ray's Welding on Angie's List and called about adding a wrought iron handrail to the brick on our front porch. They were very nice on the phone and we set an appointment to have them come out and give an estimate. They arrived on-time and told me they would send me a written estimate. I did not hear back from them after a couple of weeks so called. It turned out there was some kind of miscue and they were waiting to hear from me. They sent over the estimate which was a little less than the others I received. Based on the happy reports from other Angies List people I decided to give them the turn. We set a date for installation. They arrived when promised, installed the handrail and presented me with a bill that was 10% less than the estimate since I was part of Angies List. I am very happy and would definitely recommend.
Description of Work: Install a custom-sized metal handrail to the brick on my front porch.

Overall, it was a great experience. Ray did a fantastic job of building a high quality fire wood rack exactly to my specifications. Additionally, he made a few suggestions that made it stronger and more durable. I would not hesitate to go back to Ray in the future. He was very good to work with and he is a master of his trade.
Description of Work: Ray made an outdoor firewood rack so I could store a face cord of hardwood for my fireplace. The quality of the work was fantastic and I could not be more pleased with the product. I initially contacted him by phone but it became easier to communicate via email because describing something three dimensional is a lot harder than sending and receiving drawings. What made the experience better was the Ray had some suggestions that made the unit stronger and better. He has a lot of great experience and really know how to build with metal. In addition he offered to prime and paint the rack with three coats of paint so that it would not rust because of its constant exposure to the elements. As with all things, you get what you pay for. I could have found a cheaper one in a magazine but it would not have been comparable in quality to the one Ray built. To have one shipped to me, it would have required assembly because you cant ship something 8x4x1.5 via UPS; you would have to send it via freight. And and after assembling it, there is no way it could have the structural integrity than the one Ray made. He made a solid, heavy, strong rack the will last for years. The only think that didn't go perfectly, and please don't take this a criticism, was that the deliver took longer than originally expected. He had to push the completion date out a couple of times but I think that was because he was really busy with end of year orders. Had been in a hurry to receive the item, I might have been a bit annoyed or insisted that he deliver it asap, however, that was not the case.

He was very punctual and very professional. He was able to assess the situation quickly and willing to do the work right then and there. He also gave me a 2 year warranty for the work he did, in case anything happens in the near future. I thought that was great, as you do not get that with every contractor these days. My experience with him was just great!

Ray designed and installed burglar bars/window guards for our 6 ground floor side windows. He promptly responded to my call to schedule a time to come give an estimate and measure the windows. He came out and measured the windows one day, we discussed designs, and he sent me a drawing of the design and estimate based on our discussions and matching our wrought iron fence. Once we decided to go ahead with it, we signed the contract, and he had the guards made and installed in a couple weeks (they were made after less than a week, but we had to schedule installation around the holidays). Great work, easy to work with, and a great price.

Ray had to come many times. First we choose the burglar bar design and measured all the windows (almost all of them had different dimensions), then he did a prototype burglar bar, then he came twice more to install, it was a difficult job but he and his team were always helpful, tidy, and used their imaginations to make the bars happen. I was impressed, as this was not a cookie-cutter job, everything had to be made by hand to very specific criteria. I cannot recommend him and his team enough. A real find.
Description of Work: Ray and his team designed and fabricated burglar bars for my ground-floor apartment. Good selection of designs, we picked the perfect design for my building, he had a tough time as each window had slightly different dimensions, but he did a beautiful job with the fabrication and the painting of the bars.

We needed repairs done on our school fence, and after researching reviews on Angie's List, I decided to call Ray's Welding & Repairs. Ray responded quickly to my call. He stopped by the school early one morning to look at what needed to be done and sent me a quote by email the same day. His quote was extremely reasonable, so I scheduled him to do the work two days later. Ray and his team arrived promptly and began to work immediately. At one point they needed to stop working for 20 minutes while our student carpool pick-up was going on, with no complaints. On our driveway gate, Ray suggested changing the locking device to a more efficient lock, which he promptly took care of. He also cut and added some material to extend a walk-through gate that did not line up properly and pointed out that the lock was poorly installed and about to break. He offered his services to replace the lock with a brand new one he had in his truck, or we could have someone else take care of it at a later time. With no pressure from Ray, I purchased the one he had in his truck (which was competitively priced), and he replaced the broken lock, which saved me time from purchasing another lock from a hardware store and having our maintenance man install. One other walk through gate was sticking and he cut it a little where it was rubbing and adjusted it. He then proceeded to prime and paint everywhere that he repaired so it matched the existing paint. It only took them a few hours on one day to complete the described work, and our fence and gates look and work perfectly! I am extremely happy with the work that Ray and his team did on our fence and I highly recommend their fine workmanship. They are true professionals and are extremely good at what they do. If we ever have a need for this type of work again, I will be sure to call Ray's Welding & Repairs.
Description of Work: Suggested a better locking device for our driveway gate that we were having problems locking, then changed device. Deepened the holes in the driveway so that the fence latch would be more secure. Fixed a walk through gate that was sticking. Fixed another walk through gate that did not line up properly. Repaired a broken lock on walk through gate. Primed and painted where all work was done.

Ray responded to my voicemail within 2 days. He was not the first response but was interested in the job and came by to look at the gate hinge within a day of our conversation. He was more competitive than the other firm that I called off A's List. He rewelded all four hinges for the two gates and repainted the areas to match the rest of the fence. I left Ray a check for his services and am very satisfied. I would use Ray again and recommend him to others.
Description of Work: We have a wrought iron fence with two gates that open to the steps up to our house. One of the hinges came loose and the gate did not operate effectively so I needed it to be rewelded.

Ray couldn't make it last Friday for an estimate due to the flu. He was as apologetic and we made an appointment Monday. He missed the appointment due to a car accident but came by later that day. We all have bad luck; life happens. He and his worker came Tuesday afternoon and was professional and did a fabulous job. He did such a great job I have asked him for an estimate for grinding down and repainting the gate in spring. I highly recommend him. He's honest and does a great job.

I am very happy with Ray's work. The new lock works great. I also asked Ray if his crew does wrought iron fence painting -- they do, and I'm clalling Ray back in the spring to paint the fence. Highly recommend Ray.
Description of Work: Terrific job! I called Ray to see if he could install a double lock on a wrought iron gate. I live in Lakeview and we've had burglaries and people walking into backyards casing houses. Ray installed a double lock on the front wrought iron gate. Work involved some welding, adding a new strike plate, installed a new Schlage lock and latch. Ray also had to adjust the gate so the lock worked perfectly and did paint touch up.

Ray is a perfectionist! He has incredible talent in fence, gate and iron welding. He came out the next day with an estimate that was affordable and fair. However, his eye and attention to detail was very impressive. He corrected the electric gate hanging on a slant as well as suggested and installed additional fence along the outside of the gate are to secure and beautify the surrounding. Ray made a mundane task like gate/fence/iron repair and installation into an art -- affordable, reliable and trustworthy. We are completely satisfied, in fact, we plan on having additional work done by Ray.

i called Ray who made an appt with me within the next few days (I'm in Logan Square) and he neatly sliced the door near the hinges and added in about a centimeter of extra metal to each connecting bar. He painted it and you can't even tell it was done. I was really impressed. The metal expands and contracts with the weather and I paid a little extra for a two year guarantee. I'm glad i did because the metal contracted a little more and he came out to fix it a second time at no charge. I would hire Ray again any time I need repair to my fence. He did a great job and I'm glad I called him so my house is more secure.

Ray is the kind of guy you want to work with. He is reasonably priced and clearly cares about the quality of his firm's work. While we had some minor challenges getting connected, any resulting delays were worth it given the quality of the finished product. I highly recommend working with Ray and his company. We plan on using him again in the spring.
Description of Work: Ray and his team installed a gate on the side of our house to prevent people from accessing our backyard without our permission. He built a door that mirrors the 'look and feel' of our existing wrought iron fencing (including a unique awning that helps keep packages dry that are dropped off by the gate).

I was thrilled that they would work with me to implement the design I had in mind. They were patient and worked through the mis-matched recylced tile with Home Depot to get a new lot sent out. At the end of the work....going into winter at this point, I was pleased with the results as a whole. Over the course of the winter and into Spring, I began to see the quality of the work done. Worst of it was the wood used for the railing...supposedly pressure treated, warped on two sections of railing and the metal rebard spindles were falling out. The siding on one of the sides was not placed flush enough and now had waves in it. The nails in the white board used to top the railing were apparently patched with a substance that was not meant to be outside as it washed down and left marks on the white topper (similar to vinyl fencing) that will only come off after repeatedly scrubbing hard with bleach....something I shouldn't have to do. I wasn't really upset feeling that they would stand behind their work and correct the issues. Once Spring came, I contacted them. The initial response was good but it might be a week or so before they could get to it. Without going into great detail (although I have them), to date, I have NOT had ANYTHING corrected despite several promises and now I don't even get a call back or email back when I attempt to contact them. It will cost me even more now to correct what they have not been willing to.
Description of Work: Ray's Welding helped me finish out my garage deck by bulding a rebarb and wood railing on 2 sides and putting up siding on the other two sides. They also finished out the top of my staircase, placed recycled tire matting for the flooring on top of my already completed roof and restored the electrical outlet. The work to actually build the railing and siding was sub contracted out.

We needed fairly extensive repairs done on our steel staircase and a few welding repairs done on our iron fence. Ray's quote came in under the other quotes and that was good, but he also explained what he would do and that there was a possibility of more work being necessary once he got into the project. Ray and his team were punctual and professional. I realized once they started just how much work it is to replace landings and risers on steel stairs. Large plates of steel are not easy to haul around and inserting them and welding them in place while maintaining the integrity of the stairs is not easy! Ray did detect some additional repair that needed to be addressed. We had some rail posts that needed replaced. Ray pointed it out, made a suggestion and asked if we wanted to proceed. He gave me a cost of work then and there and he held to that price. Our staircase is now practically new and the fence repairs are undetectable. Ray also primed and repainted his repairs. He cleaned up completely as well. In my opinion, Ray is a pro with a lot of steel work experience, he gives competitive pricing and does what he says he will do. In fact, I have a small welding job for Ray on our front gate and he is the only person I would call.
