We were very pleased with their service. They are very nice and responsive, and their workers are always professional. We have been pleased with their work in the past and felt comfortable using him again. He gave me a firm quote, which I appreciated. He is very good about keeping his word, and is good at what he does. The ceiling fan installation was quite tricky due to our lack of an attic, but he did a great job.
Description of Work: He has rewired the kitchen for us in the past, and they just installed ceiling fans yesterday. The kitchen rewiring came to $710, and it will likely be around $1700 for the ceiling fan installation.

First, find the transformer (not easy in an older building); test the doorbell unit; call up and find a replacement unit; return to install it the next day. The motion sensor lights had been working intermittently; he suggested that the wire casings were worn and moist from winter; after finding the right wires, he replaced them, and they've worked perfectly since then.
Description of Work: Requested service was repair or replacement of the doorbell system for our six-unit building; this was easy enough, and after a bit of discussion I mentioned a malfunctioning motion sensor lighting system in our basement gangway. Pete was able to locate a replacement doorbell system *and* rewire our lights that same day!

HE takes him time and makes sure you are completely satisifed. He even tried to undercharge me, but we got all of that squared away =) HE only charged me for the 1 hour he was here. HE followed up with Eddison (Utility) several times over the next couple days to ensure they came out because Peter was unable to get on the electrical pole.

Peter was immediately responsive. He came within an hour of my reaching him, to evaluate the sconces and propose a solution. He then secured the needed parts and returned early the next day with his helper. Together they completed all the work in a short time. The job was done neatly and competently. Peter is very pleasant. I would certainly call him again.
Description of Work: Peter repaired two wall sconces whose contacts didn't connect with the bulb. He also replaced several dimmer switches and installed an outlet box in the basement.

THE MEMBER WAS A REAL JOY TO WORK FOR. THEY WERE JUST AS KIND AND GENEROUS AS COULD BE. I APPRECIATE THEIR HONEST FEEDBACK ABOUT MY TENDENCY TO MAKE SMALL TALK AS I WORK. ONE OF THE THINGS I LIKE BEST ABOUT MY JOB IS THE WAY IT ALLOWS ME TO MEET MY NEIGHBORS. HYDE PARK DOES INDEED FEEL LIKE A LITTLE VILLAGE WITHIN A MAJOR CITY. HAVING COME HERE FOR COLLEGE IN 1981 NEVER LEAVING, I REALLY FEEL LIKE IT IS MY HOME, MY PLACE IN THE WORLD. AS SUCH, AT TIMES I TEND TO FORGET THAT I AM THERE ON BUSINESS AND NOT AS A SOCIAL CALL. I AM ALWAYS CURIOUS ABOUT HOW OTHER PEOPLE CAME TO LIVE HERE AND WHAT THEIR PATH IN LIFE HAS BEEN. AT TIMES MY CURIOSITY GETS THE BEST OF ME. I DO APPRECIATE THE HONEST FEEDBACK FROM THESE CLIENTS. IT MAY NOT BE APPROPRIATE TO BE BADGERING FOLKS WITH QUESTIONS. I DO NEED TO REMEMBER THAT OUR RELATIONSHIP IS ESSENTIALLY ONE OF CLIENT AND SERVICE PROVIDER. WITH REFLECTION, I REALIZE THEY PROBABLY HAVE THINGS TO DO WITH THEIR TIME AND MAY NOT WISH TO BE DISTRACTED. AND FINALLY, WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE, THEY ARE PAYING ME TO WORK, NOT TO CHAT. I APPRECIATE THE CANDID YET GENTLE REMINDER, FOLKS. THERE IS ALWAYS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT. I'LL TRY HARD TO PAY ATTENTION TO THIS.

We had tried to install a new ceiling light ourselves, but after experiencing an electric jolt while screwing in a bulb, we decided to get a professional who knew about wiring in old buildings. Peter came within a half hour of my calling him on the phone and not only installed the light, but cleaned up the wiring and adjusted the old ceiling mount. Additionally, he gave free advice about an existing lighting problem in our unit, and also saved us several thousand bucks on an unneeded furnace wiring repair that our furnace company was trying to get us to do. Peter is well known in Hyde Park and his customers use him repeatedly.

Mr. McCarthy will not be undertaking our project due to logistics, but if we were in a different geography or under less restrictive time constraints he would have earned the job with his detailed analysis and candid feedback. Good work!
Description of Work: Mr. McCarthy reviewed our association's request for an estimate and provided valuable input even though he knew he would not be able to take on the job personally. He let us know quickly that our building was on the other side of town and that we would be better served in going with another specialist given our time constraints and his locations. After that, he gave us about 15 valuable insights for us to consider as we evaluate our existing systems and consider a new exterior lighting system. I realize this was above and beyond and wanted to let others know what a pleasant surprise this was from a business man that knew he was not going to benefit personally, but who wanted his prospect to get the best system for their situations. It was extremely helpful.

I live in an 85 year old building and even though my unit had been recently rehabbed, the electrical plan was terrible. Peter looked at everything I wanted done, and examined all the electrical wiring and fuse/circuit breaker boxes before he gave me an estimate. He also suggested some alternatives that would cost less money. He was prompt, he was finished in 2 days and he cleaned up after himself - well. I would certainly recommend him and hire him again.

Peter was very good on the initial visit to install the new fixture in the bathroom and take down the chandelier in the dinning room. If I remember correctly, Peter's wife had a baby around this time. After we had the chandelier refurbished, Peter did not follow up on the re-installation. After several missed appointments he finally came back to finish the job and explained that he had to stay home to watch his baby. He is a very nice guy and I understand the difficulty that a new child might bring, but I feel it is not professional to use that as an excuse to leave a customer hanging. I would give Peter a second chance as he has done good work in our building at a reasonable price. Being local and knowledgeable is a big plus.
Description of Work: Peter replaced our bathroom flood light with a more decorative halogen light. He also removed a chandelier that needed mechanical repair and was to re-install it after it was refurbished. It was an old light fixture that matched the sconces in our vintage apartment and was difficult to replace with something that matched the apartment.

I AM VERY EMBARRASSED BY THIS REPORT, AND I APOLOGIZE PROFUSELY FOR THE AGGRAVATION AND STRESS I CAUSED YOU DURING THIS PERIOD. IF I COULD GO BACK AND DO IT AGAIN, I WOULD DO IT VERY DIFFERENTLY. AS IT IS, ALL I CAN DO IS OFFER YOU MY SINCERE APOLOGY. YOU ARE 100% CORRECT IN EVERYTHING YOU SAY HERE. WHEN THIS JOB WAS IN PROGRESS, EITHER 2003 OR 2004, I WAS NOT DOING A VERY GOOD JOB OF RUNNING MY BUSINESS. OUR DAUGHTER WAS BORN IN APRIL 03 AND AFTER 6 WEEKS OF MATERNITY LEAVE, MY WIFE HAD TO RETURN TO WORK AND I HAD FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR TAKING CARE OF MY DAUGHTER. AT THE TIME, I BELIEVED I COULD BOTH BE A FULL TIME STAY AT HOME DAD AND MAINTAIN MY ELECTRICAL BUSINESS BY WORKING NIGHTS AND WEEKENDS. THIS WAS WHILE MY WIFE WAS WORKING FULL TIME IN THE FAR SUBURBS AND DRIVING BACK TO HYDE PARK EVERY DAY. THIS TURNED OUT TO BE A VERY WRONG ASSUMPTION ON MY PART. (MORE LIKE A "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING" MOMENT, TRUTH BE TOLD.) I WAS WOEFULLY INADEQUATE AT MEETING MY CLIENTS NEEDS, AND I MADE SEVERAL PROMISES I COULD NOT KEEP AND APPOINTMENTS THAT I WOULD MISS. I DRASTICALLY UNDERESTIMATED HOW ALL-CONSUMING HAVING A NEW BABY WAS, BOTH FOR ME AND FOR MY WIFE. I WOULD REPEATEDLY HAVE TO CANCEL APPOINTMENTS THAT I HAD BOOKED FOR TIME I THOUGHT WOULD BE AVAILABLE TO WORK, BECAUSE UNANTICIPATED FAMILY THINGS CONSTANTLY CAME UP. YOUR JOB WAS ONE OF SEVERAL DURING THIS PERIOD THAT I BOTCHED, AND AGAIN I AM SO SORRY. I THINK TOO, ESPECIALLY WITH THE NEW MOUTH TO FEED AT HOME, I SUFFERED FROM A BAD CASE OF "CONTRACTOR-ITIS," THAT PECULIAR AFFLICTION THAT LEADS ONE TO NEVER TURN ANY CUSTOMER DOWN FOR FEAR OF THEM FINDING SOMEONE ELSE TO SERVICE THEIR NEEDS, EVEN THOUGH IT BECAME CLEAR I COULD NOT MEET THEM. A STRING OF IRRITATED CLIENTS AND FRUSTRATING BATTLES ON THE HOME FRONT EVENTUALLY PROVED TO ME THAT I WAS IN OVER MY HEAD, AND SOMETHING HAD TO GIVE. IT TOOK ME A LONG TIME TO LEARN THAT PEOPLE ARE MUCH HAPPIER IF YOU TELL THEM STRAIGHT OUT THAT YOU ARE NOT AVAILABLE RATHER THAN MAKE THEM PROMISES FOR 3 WEEKS AND THEN HAVE THEM FIND SOMEONE ELSE ANYWAY, EXCEPT NOW WITH NOTHING GOOD TO SAY ABOUT YOU. I WAS STUCK TRYING TO BE ALL THINGS TO ALL PEOPLE AND IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE. THE MORE I TRIED THE WORSE IT GOT. BUT ALONG THE WAY, I TREATED GOOD CLIENTS RUDELY AND INCONSIDERATELY, AND YOU WERE ONE OF THOSE CLIENTS. AGAIN, I APOLOGIZE. EVENTUALLY, I PUT MY BUSINESS COMPLETELY ON HOLD FOR ABOUT 3 YEARS UNTIL MY DAUGHTER WAS IN NURSERY SCHOOL, AND THEN DID PART TIME WORK UNTIL SHE REACHED KINDERGARTEN. NOW SHE IS IN SCHOOL UNTIL 3 PM AND WE HAVE OTHER PARENTS WHO I ROTATE PLAYDATES WITH, SO I AM ABLE TO GET IN A GOOD 30 HOURS A WEEK AND MY BUSINESS IS BACK ON TRACK. BUT THIS PERIOD OF TIME TAUGHT ME HOW IMPORTANT COMMUNICATION AND RELIABILITY IS. BEING AN EXCELLENT ELECTRICIAN IS NOT ENOUGH. I DON'T THINK I "GOT" THAT AS WELL THEN AS I DO NOW. I STILL MAKE MISTAKES, OF COURSE. BUT I STRIVE VERY HARD TO BE PROMPT, RESPONSIVE AND REALISTIC WITH CLIENTS OR PROSPECTIVE CLIENTS. I STRIVE NOT TO OVER-BOOK MY TIME AND ESPECIALLY TO STAY IN COMMUNICATION WITH PEOPLE. LIKE MOST GUYS WHO WORK IN CONSTRUCTION OR THE TRADES, THIS DOES NOT COME NATURAL TO ME. BUT I HAVE REALIZED IT IS EVERY BIT AS IMPORTANT AS PULLING THE RIGHT SIZED WIRE OR MAKING THE CONNECTIONS PROPERLY. I HOPE IF YOU HAVE ELECTRICAL ISSUES IN THE FUTURE YOU MIGHT FIND YOUR WAY CLEAR TO TRYING US AGAIN. I WILL GLADLY GIVE YOU A 20% DISCOUNT ON YOUR NEXT JOB, IF INDEED THERE EVER IS ONE. I HAVE WORKED FOR MULTIPLE CLIENTS IN YOUR BUILDING OVER THE YEARS, AS WELL AND MANY FOLKS ON BOTH SIDES OF DORCHESTER, BLACKSTONE, KENWOOD AND WOODLAWN, AND MY LIST OF REFERENCES FOR THE HYDE PARK-KENWOOD AREA HAS OVER 300 NAMES. I LIKE TO BELIEVE I LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES, AND I DO THINK I HAVE LEARNED MORE ABOUT HOW TO BE A RESPONSIBLE BUSINESSMAN AND QUALITY CONTRACTOR SINCE 03 AND 04. AGAIN, I REGRET ANY INCONVENIENCES I CAUSED YOU AND I WOULD WELCOME THE OPPORTUNITY TO WIN BACK YOUR BUSINESS IN THE FUTURE. THANK YOU FOR WRITING THIS REPORT AND REMINDING ME HOW IMPORTANT EACH AND EVERY CLIENT IS. SINCERELY, PETER MCCARTHY, OWNER

I live in a 1920's building in Hyde Park and had a power outage due to an overload on a circuit (a 12-amp industrial-strength vacuum cleaner had been plugged into a 15-amp circuit by a cleaning service...). I wasn't there when the outage occurred, but when I looked at the panel that evening, I found a circuit breaker was tripped. Resetting it did not restore power to about a dozen outlets and lights in the back of the house. After spending a few days trying to diagnose the problem myself, I called Pete. He came out the same day and began a thorough investigation of the problem. Unfortunately, the walls in my place are made of thick plaster, the wiring is enclosed in metal pipes, and there are several junction boxes that have been plastered over years ago whose location is somewhat a mystery. All this made it difficult to locate the exact cause of the short using standard techniques such as pulling on wires or listening for tone. Things were complicated by the fact that the circuit breaker that tripped turned out to be on a different circuit than the one that ultimately had the short in it. I wish I could say that Pete had found the problem after spending three afternoons on the job, but as it turned out, I backed into the cause myself when I noticed a melted wire nut on an outlet that was thought to be on a different circuit, and which had just been pulled right before Pete left at the end of that third day. When I re-spliced that outlet, all of the remaining outlets (which I had thought were on the other circuit) began working again! So the source of the original tripped breaker on the wrong circuit is a mystery that will go unsolved, since it was not the breaker for the circuit with the short, but was the reason that I told Pete we were working on one circuit when we really were working on another. Given the "misinformation" that I'd fed him, it's understandable that the process did not go more smoothly, but Pete struck me as a very competent electrician and also a very nice guy. He even agreed to allow me to barter a couple of hours of my time to repair his computer (my area of expertise) in return for a discount.

Peter came out to fix a switch that wasn't working. I mentioned that I had always meant to replace the fixture in that room. Peter made plans to come back and fix the switch and install a light after I had purchased it. He did not charge for the extra visit. He even took care of another small problem in the house. He stuck to his estimate even though the job required more than he had anticipated. I would definitely use him again for any electrical work I needed.

I believed I had an electrical problem & I contacted Pete. He offered to come by the next day to fix it. He took the time to explain the possible causes & the fixes needed. Ultimately, he wasn't needed, but his willingness to come by on short notice was very impressive. I need to get some electrical work done in the future & will certainly ask Pete to do it. I WAS HAPPY TO MEET THE MEMBER OVER THE PHONE. IT TURNED OUT SHE LIVED ONLY A COUPLE BLOCKS FROM ME. SHE WAS VERY CONCERNED BECAUSE THANKSGIVING WAS COMING AND HER WASHING MACHINE KEPT SETTING OFF THE GFCI HER CONTRACTOR INSTALLED. I EXPLAINED TO HER THAT IT WOULD NOT BE UNCOMMON FOR THE INTERNAL CONDENSATION IN LAUNDRY EQUIPMENT TO RESULT IN CONTINUED NUISANCE TRIPPING. I POINTED OUT THAT AS LONG AS THE MACHINE WAS PROPERLY GROUNDED, THERE WAS NO NEED FOR A GFCI. SHE WAS ABLE TO HAVE HER CONTRACTOR COME BY AND CHANGE IT OUT TO A REGULAR 3 PRONG GROUNDED OUTLET, AND TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE, THE PROBLEM WAS SOLVED. SHE WAS VERY KIND TO GIVE MY NAME TO A COLLEAGUE OF HERS. I CALLED HIM AND SPOKE ABOUT A SMALL JOB HE HAD, MOVING A SWITCH AND INSTALLING SOME LIGHTS. I WAS SUFFERING FROM A BOUT OF THE FLU AND WAS NOT REALLY "COMPLETELY TUNED IN," AND I MADE AN APPOINTMENT FOR THE FOLLOWING WEEK TO COME OVER. I REALIZED THE NEXT DAY THAT IT WOULD NOT WORK OUT TO TRAVEL TO HIS LOCATION, ESPECIALLY SINCE HE HAD ASKED ME TO DRIVE AND PICK UP A LIGHT FIXTURE FOR HIM. I KNEW THE AMOUNT OF TIME INVOLVED IN ALL OF THE TRAVELING AND CHASING AROUND WOULD EITHER RUN UP HIS BILL AND FRUSTRATE HIM, OR WOULD BE UNRECOVERABLE TIME ON MY PART. SO THE NEXT DAY I CALLED HIM TO APOLOGIZE AND LET HIM KNOW THAT I REGRETTED THE MISTAKE I MADE, BUT THAT I ONLY WORKED IN HYDE PARK. I ALSO CALLED THE MEMBER TO THANK HER & LET HER KNOW. I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE ON TOP OF THINGS AND NOT WASTED HIS TIME.

Peter McCarthy is a top-notch electrician and a real pleasure to work with, too. As far as I could tell, his work was flawless. He is completely knowledgeable about his work, is prompt, courteous and professional. He is also very thorough, careful and organized. If he is unclear on anything, he asks. He is extremely diligent in answering any and all of your questions, too (either by phone or email). He is also very good and considering, explaining and discussing all aspects of a job that need consideration before beginning the work. During the work, he is very good at staying in touch. Not only about how the electrical work is going, but also checking in about other aspects of the overall project as well. So he makes sure to dovetail with other trades on the job, if any, and makes the overall project go very smoothly. I would definitely hire Peter again for any electrical job, large or small.
Description of Work: For a complete kitchen remodeling job, we hired Peter to help us plan all electrical aspects of our design. He and his colleague then did all of the electrical work on the project.
