A severe wind storm had knocked down a large tree in my back yard, and the top of the tree hit the back of my house and tore off the electric service riser from where it was attached above the meter. After a few days of back-and-forth with Commonwealth Edison to determine that the repairs were my responsibility, not theirs, they suddenly came out with no advance warning on a Saturday afternoon and disconnected and removed the (still live) wire, leaving me with no electricity. I called Peter McCarthy on Sunday, and he came over in less than an hour to assess the situation and give me a verbal estimate, taking care to explain why I needed more work than simply reattaching the existing wire to the back of the house. He said he would be able come over with a crew to start work Monday morning, emailed me a written proposal later that same day, and showed up bright and early Monday morning. His men worked a full day, and Peter came back again on Tuesday morning in order to finish patching the masonry. In addition, in the course of the work (while grounding the system to the water pipe) he discovered a minor plumbing problem that could have become a major problem, made a temporary repair, and put me in contact with a plumber who could do a permanent repair at a reasonable price. This was my first experience using Angie's List, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Thank you, Peter, and thank you Angie's List!

Matthew is usually the person who comes over and he does beautiful work -- every workman who visits the basement comments on the conduit work! They are very neat when on the job, work every day once they start, and are flexible and accommodating to having multiple owners in a building, giving clear instructions about what we can expect. It can sometimes take a few days or so to hear back from Peter, the company owner, but it is worth the wait, and he's great about getting things set up via email. They are very good with our 1926 building -- a lot of experience with homes in the 1900-onward range.

My initial involvement with Peter McCarthy was in 2009 when he installed a four-prong interior outlet, outdoor outlet, and replaced two closet lights. I chose him due to his rating on Angie's List, and his knowledge of older homes. Peter is a pleasant person and customer friendly. I was very satisfied with the initial work he did at my home, so I called him back for a second project and to receive estimates on a future major endeavor. The second job, installing two sets of four prong outlets in my home office, was also done neatly and efficiently. I can recommend Peter without hesitation.

Peter and his crew did an excellent job. They were courteous and clean. The job fished earlier than they estimated, they worked hard, and they did a good job and working around my children. I had two other estimates done by companies rated highly on Angie's list and Peter's estimate was the lowest. The actual cost matched his estimate. We had a problem with flickering lights in our townhouse. After reading online about the variety of issues which could cause this problem, we went online to Angies List and looked for an electrician. Peter McCarthy was local to Hyde Park and had excellent reviews on both Yelp and Angie's List. Peter and I emailed back and forth and then we set up a time for his technician to come out and see what was going on. Then Peter himself came to check out the situation before giving us a detailed quote and estimate. We were able to get everything scheduled very quickly and the work was completed in one day, under a week from the time of first contact. Peter personally checked over all the work and gives his work a guarantee. I strongly recommend him to help with any electrical needs. We'll be using him again for our next electrical job.

Mr. McCarthy has been great to work with -- he is easy to reach by phone or email, he is readily available to provide estimates and schedule work, he's always polite and courteous, he does excellent work, he's knowledgeable about older buildings like ours, and as a neighborhood resident, he's invested in the community.

Mr. McCarthy submitted a very professional, reasonable proposal. He obtained a permit for the work from the City. He and his workers completed the work efficiently and courteously, with little inconvenience to the residents, and, after completing the job, left the premises in a very clean condition. He kept us informed at all times of the steps involved in the project so that we could adjust our activities to the schedule. The city inspector complimented him on a beautiful job well done.

He was great though I didn?t use him because I couldn?t afford it. He gave me a written quote and it was thorough. He stayed in touch with me through emails and he returned all my calls. I would use him in future.

I contacted Peter to finish the installation of a door bell that my contractor was to replace as a part of a major restoration. The contractor claimed he could not find the electrical wires for the old bell to install the new one. I emailed Peter based on the rave reviews on Angie's List and his expertise in older buildings (my home was built in 1896). Peter responded quickly to my email and we scheduled a meeting within the week. He came to my home and reviewed the door bell situation and the problems we were having with recessed lighting. Peter was responsive to our questions, thoughtful about solving the lighting problems, and focused while reviewing the electrical aspects of the door bell system. He gave us a variety of options with a breakdown of prices for each item. We scheduled the work for about a week later. Peter and his crew arrived on time. They worked quickly to run the lines and connect the bell. Peter even purchased some metal cleaner so I could clean the very tarnished lion's head doorbell button. I was most impressed with the care he and his crew took in cutting the plaster to run the line -- only two holes! One is covered by the chimes and the other Peter plastered to perfection. In all I can say this was a perfect job on all fronts! I wish I knew about Peter when I renovated my home. I will not hesitate to use him again and have referred (raved about ) him to friends. Peter is truly the gold standard of electricans!
