We are an electrical contractor specializing in retrofitting older wiring. We have rewired many older homes from the 1870s- 1960s, and I am expert in redesigning electrical systems to meet modern power requirements and Chicago electrical code. My blog on my website chronicles various jobs we have done and issues I have encountered. I am a 4th generation electrician in Chicago and take great pride in my work.
Description of Work: Microwave wasn't working due to defective outlet. Peter replaced it and installed it correctly and up to code unlike the person who installed it originally.

Mr. McCarthy responded to my phone call within hours and came by our Hyde Park apt. that very same day, even though it was after normal business hours. Before coming by, he actually took the time to brainstorm with me about potential sources of the problem, and he walked me through possible ways to fix it. He then followed up via email for continued discussion (free of charge) to make sure it would be worth our paying a labor charge for him to come in person. He was very professional and showed a tremendous amount of respect and integrity in the advice he gave. I'll definitely be calling him to repair the track lights soon.
Description of Work: He assessed a problem with track lighting and provided an estimate.

We had a circuit breaker that was tripping. After trying to solve it on our own unsuccessfully, I contacted Peter through Angies List. I sent the request on a Saturday afternoon. Within an hour, Peter called back. I wasn't available, but did eventually get in touch with Peter. He was very thorough and spent 20 minutes on the phone explaining to me background on the condition I was experiencing and gave me his thoughts on what might be causing the problem. Talking to Peter for 20 minutes saved me an electrician visit and probably over $100. In the future, if I ever do have a need for an electrician, I will be calling Peter first.
Description of Work: Just a phone call with Peter.

Thank you Sir! I am so glad I was able to be of service. It's nothing, really. I am always happy to share my knowledge and experience. Overall I would rate the workmanship and customer service as "excellent"! From my initial contact with Peter he was very repsonsive to my phone inquiries and very promptly scheduled an initial consultation to get a feel for the project(s) I had in mind. Though that initial consultation was cut short due to schedule conflicts, Peter was great with email & phone follow-ups to assure my questions were answered and that I understood the options based on the projects under consideration. Additionally he was great about providing providing the high/low cost estimates which I very much appreciated. The one slight "glitch" of you could call it that was actually scheduling the work, or I should say confirming and exact date of the work. That phase took a bit longer than was comfortable, however Peter was GREAT about explaining the constraints with the scheduling and was able to factor in my time constraints and met them with weeks to spare! Once the job commenced, Peter and Matt were prompt and incredibly efficient. I appreciated the frequent consultations at critical points during the installation. They were both great to work with and I am excited to utilize them for my next project.
Description of Work: The front stairs outside had no light to help people see as they walk up,or help find their keys in the darkness. A Prairie-inspired exterior fixture that matches the style and vintage of the building perfectly was installed on the front face by drilling through the brick and setting a recessed box inside the brick wall. The often-used technique of mounting the flat pancake box right on the wall surface was not appropriate here, because it would have forced the fixture to sit off the wall about 1/2" It would have worked, but it just would not have looked right. Peter explained that this front face brick is very hard (much harder than the common brick used for the sides, back and maybe the second and third courses behind the front face. Note the bricks on the side wall of the building next door. That is common brick.) It can also be very brittle, and since the round box were were going to recess in the wall takes up almost as much space as the rectangular base of the fixture, he was very concerned that if the brick cracked beyond the edge of the circle we were drilling and then chopping out to create a recess, it might crack wide and the crack would not be hidden by the base of the fixture. Peter's foreman Matt did an excellent job of drilling out a beautiful round circle large enough to accommodate the pancake box but not so large as to extend beyond the surface that would be concealed later by the fixture base. That entailed painstakingly drilling out about 50 1/4" holes in a circular shape to create the basic outline, and then carefully chopping the brick within the outline out by hand with a chisel. This kind of work is time-consuming and requires not only some good muscle to swing the hammer, but a very highly tuned-in sensibility to careful monitor every blow and every hole. He did a great job! On the inside, there was an existing fixture on the wall that they were able to use as the take-off point. To minimize damage and plaster repair, they ran surface-mounted wiremold raceway from the existing fixture across the walls and ceiling to the point where they passed through the wall to feed the exterior light. Matt again showed his skill and sensibility by suggesting that he bend the wiremold at 90 degrees to transition from wall to ceiling. This was elegant design and execution.

From beginning to end, Peter and his team were wonderful to work with, and I cannot recommend them highly enough. The project at hand was a fairly major one. I had just bought a 3-bedroom condo in a 100-year old building in Hyde Park, and it was clear that the electrical system had not been updated in decades: there was cloth wiring throughout and many decrepit components. Peter was recommended to me by a colleague (and I was certainly also encouraged by all the great reviews on Angie's List). Peter visited the apartment, and proved to be an expert on old buildings, explaining how the electrical system was set up (and even the historical factors that led to such designs) and what upgrades would be necessary (I have a technical background -albeit not in electrical work- and found his explanations on old buildings fascinating). Even the most minute request for information was met with a wealth of information on Peter's side. His enthusiasm for the job was an important factor in selecting him. A project of this size required condo board approval, and Peter prepared a detailed proposal (citing specific studies and regulations on the importance of replacing cloth wiring) that instantly won the board over. Once the project started, Peter kept me informed every step of the way, checking with me any time they found anything unexpected and making sure I made an informed choice on how to proceed. The project necessarily required making several holes in the walls to install new conduits or accommodate new fixtures. However, I was surprised at how small and precise the holes were (I was bracing myself for huge chunks of the walls being torn down). In fact, the plasterer who came to patch the holes praised the work as a "precision job", as in his experience many electricians are sloppy about making holes in the walls, since that will be the plasterer's problem, not theirs. All in all, the project ended on schedule and I am very satisfied with the result. I have been living in the apartment for a month now, and have zero complaints about the electrical work. If you are looking at the other reviews for Peter, most of which are for minor projects, and are concerned about whether Peter and his team can handle major projects, the answer is a resounding yes.
Description of Work: Complete rewiring of a 3-bedroom condo in a 100-year building in Hyde Park (which still had cloth wiring pretty much everywhere). This included replacing the wires coming from the basement to the unit. Project also included replacing all switches and power outlets, installing new light fixtures throughout the unit, and adding Ethernet and coaxial conduits and outlets.

This company is a gem! I feel so fortunate to have found Peter (through Angie's List) and would definitely recommend them to anyone. Peter has an old fashioned work ethic, which to me means he is polite, courteous, timely, professional and kind. He even sent us a congratulatory text when we went into the hospital to deliver our son! His men were always respectful of our home, and were quiet and friendly as they worked. As a contractor, I understand that there is a big difference between getting the job done and doing it in excellence. Peter and his guys do it in excellence.

Peter was quick to come out to discuss the project and quick to prepare an estimate. He identified items at Home Depot that would work and sent me the link to make purchasing the fixtures easy. Peter came out and did an estimate, and advised us on our options and the best ways to accomplish what we were trying to do (main challenge we had was how to brighten a dark area in our kitchen, though we had numerous straightforward projects in the project, too). He also did a good job setting expectations that our work would involve cutting open several walls, and that we might have to alter our plans if we encountered obstructions behind the walls. Although it took a little longer than we would have liked to set up the initial appointment (due to the heat wave in July Peter was especially busy), once we got engaged, Peter was very responsive and communicative. He turned around his proposal shortly after coming out to estimate the work, and he began work shortly after that. We were especially appreciative of him fitting us into his schedule on such short notice because we had painters working on our house simultaneously, and we wanted to get the electrical work finished before the painters left, so they could patch and paint any areas where we had to cut open or drill holes into the walls for the electrical repairs. Peter's crew was courteous, professional, and quick, getting the work done in 2 - 3 days. They were very careful with our house and belongings, and installed all the fixtures, outlets, wiring, and switches precisely, lining them up perfectly with existing switches, or centering/placing them exactly where we wanted them. All the lights, fans, internet and phone lines, and doorbell repairs worked perfectly. We did have one surprise on the job: We had originally wanted to install recessed lighting in our kitchen over the bar, but when Peter's crew drilled a pilot hole to see if there would be enough room for the cans, they discovered an air duct blocking the way. They helped us come up with a "Plan B" that involved installing a wall sconce on the soffit over the bar instead. That worked out fine, and adds a nice look to the room as well. We had used Peter McCarthy Electric once before and had been very pleased with his work. Happy to report that he's still doing excellent work. We're very pleased with his service, accountability, professionalism, knowledge/skill, the pride that he and his crew take in their work, and the personal touch Peter shows with his customers, such as by sending us a hand-written note thanking us for hiring him.
Description of Work: 1. Installed net new light fixture in kitchen (cut new hole, ran conduit and wiring, installed new wiring box and switch, hung fixture);2. Replaced a light fixture and installed ceiling medallion over bar; 3. Repaired/rewired doorbell4. Installed a new combination phone/internet outlet in study (cut hole, ran wiring, installed new wiring box and outlet);5. Replaced 4 outlets in study (replaced white outlets with brown, to match wood paneling); 6. Moved thermostat to new location; 7. Replaced a light fixture and fan in the bathroom (cut out and remove old fan unit, and replace with new fan & light).

I put in a distress call to Peter McCarthy regarding electrical malfunctioning of a number of areas in my Hyde Park condominium. This was of special concern to me since it is listed for rental and is being shown to potential clients. This was at the high point of one of our hottest days - 100 degrees at noon! It was also at a very busy time for him. He quickly came to my unit, with ladder and tools in hand to fix the problem. It turned out to be a simple solution that was overlooked by me - I had misread the position of the circuit breaker that must have been tripped by the previous night's storm. Though sweating profusely (since the unit was currently unoccupied and the AC was not on), he never got flustered. Not only did he NOT charge me for the call, but he was very pleasant throughout. He stated that he was happy to put my mind at ease and wished me a good day! NOW THAT IS TRULY GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE!
Description of Work: Peter McCarthy came to see why some lights and outlets in my condominium unit were not getting any power. He found that I had not realized that one of the single circuit breakers was not in proper position (although I thought that I had inspected carefully). I called him because he has done major work for me in the past at this and another location.

He helped me troubleshoot some electrical lights which were ugly, a circuit that was not working and a light fixture that had shorted out due to water damage. He is professional, he knows what he is doing, and he doesn’t try and get the work over on any time frame, he really just wants to get the job done correctly. He does not try to nickel and dime me or come up with huge estimates that weren’t necessary and he never charged me at all. He explained to me where the problem was and advised me to wait until things dry out, to give something else a try and it ended up fixing itself, so he could have come out and done a bunch of unnecessary repairs and charged me for it, but he didn’t. He is honest, he is forthright and he is very smart. I would use him again in the future if needed.

Than you very kindly for your report and for your business. I really appreciate it! As you rightly point out, my responsiveness and punctuality are my hardest challenges in business. I run a small operation here, with no office manager, secretary or dispatcher. I handle all of the scheduling and paperwork myself, and it does become a bit overwhelming to me sometimes. Moreover, I have very substantial time constraints due to having full responsibility for my daughter and all her needs during normal "working" hours, if there still are such a thing. So things come up on short notice, at times I can not reconcile her needs with the scheduling I had previously planned, and things generally get delayed. I do not put this out there as an excuse. Clients have their own needs and if they can not be handled professionally and promptly, I understand their desire to look elsewhere. I hope the reasonableness of my pricing, my extensive knowledge and technical ability, and honesty to a fault somehow balance the scales, but they don't sometimes. I do my best, but I realize at times I fall short. I really enjoyed meeting you, and I was so impressed with the way your new fixture complimented and gave three dimensional expression to the bird's nest motif in the artwork on the wall! It was visually stunning and extremely beautiful and original. I enjoyed meeting you and thank you again!

Peter was very good. Even though he was not able to fix it, he was able to tell me what was wrong. Then I was able to fix it myself. Peter tried to trouble shoot the problem. He tried to do some work but he wasn’t able to resolve the situation. He was able to give me the information and I was able to do it myself. It wasn’t a big deal, but he helped me with some information. My experience was positive. Peter came over immediately. That’s what I kind of like to pay for, when people come when I need them. In that sense, that is usually the highest criteria for me. The price was a little high because he didn’t fix anything but he did give me the information to fix it. So, that was worth the money. I expected it to be closer to a $120 or $140 may be, because I was out there helping him. He wasn’t really doing much. $180 was a little pricey for what he did. Everything about him was excellent. The huge issue was the pricing. I would use him in the future.
Description of Work: I used Peter McCarthy Electric Co Inc in November 2011. The electricity in the garage wasn’t working. So Peter diagnosed it as there was some fray in one of the wires that ran from underground from the garage to the house. So, he found where the piping went into the house and then we uncoupled it and pulled the wire out. The wire ended up breaking. I just went to a store bought a wire and a snake piping equipment and snaked it myself.

Peter McCarthy is one of the most responsive contractors I have ever dealt with. He returned my call immediately, set up a meeting in a couple days, got me an estimate that same day, waited patiently while the association made a decision about proceeding, and then was at my house in 4 days to get the work done. The job took a couple hours and when Matt, the electrician who did the work, had questions, he gave me a ring to let me know the issues he ran into. He was considerate, polite, and quick. I kind of wish that the other work that needs to be done in this house was electrical so I could hire them again!

I have nothing but great things to say about him and his workman, Matthew. Peter was easy to get a hold of and quickly came by to see what work needed to be performed, advised us of our options and promptly followed up with a detailed quote. I found his quote to be imminently reasonable for the amount of work involved. We then scheduled the work. Peter's workman Matthew was here for three days and did a superb job, on top of that he was very quiet and cleaned his work space very nicely every night. On the day he left, every room he had worked in was spotless. I can only recommend Peter McCarthy and would hire him back any time.

Peter McCarthy Electric Company, Inc lives up to its claim that they specialize in older buildings. We live in a vintage six-flat. Our unit was in dire need of upgraded electrical service. Peter and his colleague, Matthew, did excellent work. They found ways to provide the service we needed while maintaining the integrity of our condo's interior. They even managed to do a work-around while running new cable so they didn't have to break up the kitchen tile. They were prompt, neat and courteous, and they held to their price estimate even though they gave us more equipment than had originally been proposed. We would not hesitate to use McCarthy Electric again.
Description of Work: Peter McCarthy Electrical Company, Inc expanded and upgraded the electrical service to our kitchen by installing 20-circuit 100 amp, 120/240V sub-panel in the basement, new 3/4" EMT conduit from the new panel to our third-floor unit, and pulled a minimum of five new circuits.

Thank you so much for your kind words. We really appreciate them. You are lovely folks to work for; I could not have asked for better clients! I am very pleased that this job went well, and I'm more than confident that your kitchen, laundry and AC power needs will pose no troubles in the future. I am especially pleased that Matt was able to design an installation where he ran the wire mold inside the cabinet, thus not marring the nicely tiled wall's clean look. I feel blessed to have him on my team, and I will certainly pass your kind words along to him. Thanks again and have a joyous holiday season! Peter
