It went outstanding. This is one of the most professional companies, I've ever worked with. The quality of the work is great. They had to remove the doors from the frame and they took every care with my doors. They did a good job of sealing my entryway so that there were no marks on anything. These guys are real pros.
Description of Work: Refinished front entry doors, inside and out
As above, always better than expected and they are on time, clean up and are reasonably priced. We highly recommend them.
Description of Work: I had a baby dresser that was in horrible shape. Mold and mildew, missing knows, just to mention a few of the problems. My daughter wanted it for future family and I was about to throw it out. Peter and his team cleaned it, repaired it and refinished it. It has never looked so beautiful. We have since had them refinish several other furnishings for us. All expertly brought back to life and use. Peter has refinished floors, installed floors, refinished cornices, baseboards, Window and door frames, kitchen cabinet fronts and doors for us. Thanks to the skill and workmanship of Peter's woodworking magic our Wood it's and home are like new. We always receive compliments from guests and family.
Outstanding work! I decided to do some updating to my home – refinishing hardwood floors, adding new flooring and refinishing kitchen cabinets. I reached out to PWR to talk through the projects but also ask for their input on color combinations and designs. After consulting with two other contractors, PWR, with their professionalism, stood out as the right choice. PWR was the only contractor that could do all the work. Araceli and her team walked me through the 4 week project and presented me with a competitive proposal (all proposals were within 5% of the other). From start to finish, PWR provided updates each morning of the work scheduled ahead. Their team of artisans was efficient, polite and professional. The started and project finished on-time with some work done onsite, other work at their shop. The floors look fantastic! My kitchen is refreshed with a modern look. I am extremely pleased with the work PWR did. No hesitation to work with PWR again.

I have used their service in the past and they are capable of good quality work. But this time around they felt that quality wasn't important. Well it is important to me! I complained and all I am getting is a run around. This is definitely NOT a quality job! I will NEVER use them again. And I suggest if you don't want headaches DON'T USE THEM!

Peter's Wood Refinishing stripped 7 vintage wood doors and prepped for painting; stripped 4 newel posts and stringers from a 100+ year old staircase. Stained a 3-piece handrail and 4 newel posts. The end product is beautiful -- without a doubt, but as a vendor, they do take some effort to manage. It was often difficult to get in touch with them and when they took the doors, we didn't hear back for over a week on how long the project would take, which impacted other parts of our renovation schedule. For the staircase project, it was less expensive to replace parts of the staircase then have them refinish it, which required several versions of the bid and a lot of back and forth. They do take credit cards, which we liked. Onsite, they were one of 3 vendors working on the rebuild of the staircase and it took a lot of follow up to sync their schedules up. They had to push back their arrival day, which impacted our entire timeline and the schedules of two other contractors. Again, they do great work (even our painter was impressed) but my husband and I had to manage their involvement closely to keep our project on track.

First at the same time they removed the parts that could be done at their workshop. That is they took the drawers and doors off and at the same time other personnel prepared the kitchen for the stripping and sanding. They were very efficient arriving, working conscientiously throughout the day and leaving at the prescribed time. They completed the work in approximately three days with beautiful results. They matched the color of the finish to that of the hardwood floors so the place looks marvelous.

They were really pleasant to work with. They did a beautiful job and the house looks amazing. Peter's wife did a walk through with us and she was great to work with. They are very knowledgeable and also had great suggestions for the staining. I really appreciated that they stuck to their original quote and they were very meticulous.

The finished product looks very good. This woodwork hadn't been refinished in 5 years or more and really needed it. Now, they capture visitors' positive attention and are one of the first features that they see when they enter the building. As the finished work shows, their staff knows how to work well with wood. Only minor negative issues were that over the course of the 3-4 day project, there were a few different people working on the project. I recognize that they are a small company and it was near the end of the season for outdoor work, but it was challenging having any continuity with different workers. In addition, as work progressed, I had to point out a few different improvements to be made that they could have caught themselves. The firm's management was very responsive and easily reached by phone for questions, suggestions. I would definitely use Peter's again, and based on my reviews of other wood refinishing services, they are among the very best.

Our 3-week job took a full nine weeks to complete and became a frustrating, disturbing experience for us, one we feel other Angie's List members should be aware of. Working with this company was not only frustrating but became distasteful when sometime after the second week and following several days when no one showed up to work, my wife received a long tearful phone call to the effect that no one would be at our house that day. She was told that the receptionist had been sabotaging their work schedule secretly, that she did this to them at a boyfriend's insistence because he had a grudge against Peter and despite the fact that they had previously saved her from an abusive home situation. Disturbing to hear, not to mention unprofessional. On the more than ten separate days when no one showed up to work on our project we were given either conflicting stories or no explanation at all. Instead of the 2 or 3 workers necessary on a daily basis to complete the job within the time frame given us by Araceli, only one worker showed up on any given day until the last week or so. Again no explanations were offered.. Nor did anyone show up to check the work being done. In addition to these problems, it turned out that Carlos did not have the skills necessary to do the advanced carpentry work on the railing installation and trim replacement work that we contracted for with Peter's Woodworking. Even more distressing, Carlos was adamant that it could not be done the way we requested. We then had to find and pay for the services of a finish carpenter to have the work done correctly. Fortunately we were able to have this done over a weekend so as not to further delay our job. During these complications, we requested meetings three different times to try to find out what underlying problems were causing these work issues on the part of an Angie's List provider with an "A" record. For one of these meetings neither Araceli nor Peter showed up. Araceli showed up in response to our other two requests but offered no real explanation. Instead both times she continued to make promises of improvement that did not happen. During the final weeks it became clear, and Araceli finally confirmed, that their firm had accepted too many jobs and was completely over extended. Unhappily for us that meant our job took much longer and was not as good as we were promised. At the end of the job there was a small reduction in our bill but we were not happy with the lack of communication or the quality of the work done by Peter's Woodworking.
Description of Work: Peter's Woodworking was hired to sand and refinish the stairway and landing of our Victorian house. This was to include removing and replacing the spindles, post and handrail as well as the trim involved. We were assured by Araceli that their carpenter, Carlos, would be able to do the work competently. In addition, their workers were to strip, sand and refinish the trim and woodwork in four rooms which included several windows and two doors on our 2nd floor. Araceli gave us a time estimate of approximately three weeks to finish the work.

I have a wooden door that is carved with Egyptian images and hieroglyphs. The door was beginning to show signs of weariness due to the harsh Chicago winters. There were several cracks and signs of water damage. I contacted Peter's Wood Refinishing because of the before and after photos on the site which made me feel confident they would be able to restore my door to its original beauty. They did not disappoint! They were professional, punctual, and courteous. On the first day they removed the door, took it into their shop, repaired the cracks, and sanded the door. Over the next three days, they came every day to paint a coat of marine varnish on the door. On the final day they even repaired, sanded, and varnished the threshold which also had taken a beating from Chicago's harsh winters and summers. If they said they were coming at 10 a.m. at 10 a.m. they were knocking on the door. I am more than pleased with Peter's Wood Refinishing.

Description of Work: The contractors stripped and refinished my bookcase. They were quite meticulous in their preparation, covering the work area so that the dust would not spread throughout my living room. Found this company on Angie List. A representative came to the house to pick up the chairs. I was told it would take about a week or two to repair and return the chairs. It was over two weeks before the chairs were returned and when they were returned they were covered in dust/dirt and had excess glue on them. Told rep I would not pay until the chairs were cleaned up. I also told the rep, I should receive a discount for having to wait longer than expected to get the chairs back and for the inconvenience of having to return them to the shop to be cleaned once they were returned The company did give me a discount, which i appreciated, but I thought overall they did not deserve the high rating they enjoy on Angie's List. I also thought for what they did-- reglue the arms on 2 chairs-they were expensive.

After protecting the floor of the lobby and the glass in the doors, they stripped the wood (which was in bad shape, since it was last refinished in 1999!), helped us select and applied a suitable stain and two coats of varnish. When the temperature dropped midway through the process, they removed the doors and took them to their shop to apply the finish indoors, then returned and re-installed them the next day. The quality of their work was first rate, as was their attention to the needs of the residents of the building. Most important, the doors look beautiful--they've been restored to their original glory!

The job went well. The two workers who completed the job were professional and careful. We are pleased with the results. Our only concern was that it took several weeks from our first call to the completion of the project. According to the company, the main delay was in securing the appropriate replacement latches. The company had to reschedule several times before the work was completed. In the end, it was worth the wait, but it was frustrating for the estimated completion date to keep shifting.
Description of Work: During a storm in late August a wind burst forced open a French window in our 12th floor (coop ) dining room, breaking off the brass latch hardware and ripping off a piece of the 7 foot tall and 2.5 inch wide vertical wood window lattice. In order to repair the damage, the company took several steps. First, within a week of our call, a representative came to give an estimate on the repairs. She discussed options for repairing the damage and took several pictures of the damages. At the end of this first visit, we agreed to the plan for the company to make a replacement lattice and to secure two new latches, matching as best as possible the original 80+ year old hardware. The next step was for a representative to come and remove a piece of the damaged lattice in order to make a replacement piece and to match the paint color for the new lattice. The third step was for two workers to come and completely remove the damaged lattice, install the new freshly painted lattice, and install the new hardware.

I first met with Aracellie on Tuesday, July 3rd. She called when she was only about 5 minutes late to the first appt (to provide an estimate). She said Peter would be by to pick up the doors later that week (Friday). Peter showed up on time to pick up the doors, and I asked him if the doors could possibly be done in two weeks (instead of their usual three). He said he didn't think it would be a problem, and they would try their best. On Wednesday, July 18th, I called and spoke to Francesca about the doors and asked if they would be done because I hadn't heard anything. She said she would ask Peter. Thursday, July 19th, the day Peter said he would try to get the doors done, came and went with no phone call back, not even a phone call telling me they weren't done, but that they would be done on their proposed date. So when I called on that Friday, I expressed how I was dissatisfied that I had not received any updates. The doors were then delayed due to a carpenter having some sort of personal issue, and they could not be put on until Saturday August 11th. They arrived almost an hour late on that date. I called 30 minutes after the appt time to see if they were still coming. Francesca said they should be there soon, though it still took another 30 minutes for them to arrive. Upon placing the doors in the entryway, I noticed they were not matching. When Peter came to pick up the doors, he picked up the wrong ones. So, they took the correct one this time and had to re-finish it. Again, I ran into scheduling problems to have that door hung because the carpenter still had personal issues. So, my husband took a day off from work to accomodate them (now August 31st). When I got home tonight, I noticed 4 things immediately: 1. The doors didn't close! They failed to check if the hardware was in the correct place before putting the final paint touches on.2. They painted the door hardware! One side is not painted, yet they painted the other side of the hardware. I DID NOT ASK THEM TO PAINT THE HARDWARE!3. There is a noticeable nick on one of the doors.4. They were supposed to bring a screw for a hinge to the basement door they hung and forgot. This was after I reminded Francesca the day before, so that she could remind the carpenter to bring the screw that was missing from their first trip. Nearly two months later, I am now out $1,800 and have doors that don't close and don't match. I called the company to complain and am waiting to hear back. We hired this company specifically because of its stellar Angie's List ratings. I am not certain how our work was so different from other customers who have rated them with A's, but this has been a disappointing experience to say the least.

My apoligies to hear such a bad experience with my company. I would like to meet with you and resolve what is wrong with the doors, we have called and left several messages starting on September 1st when we received the voicemail you left after hours on the 31st of August. After leaving 3 voicemails for you we contacted Angies List and they also tried contacting you, than we called 2 times, hoping to schedule a meeting with you and take care of the doors and meeting your expectations. Yes, the project ran longer than expect as my carpinters son had surgery and was hospitalized for a few days and than you had a couple of reschedules as well. We were scheduled for delivery on July 28th and we got a call that you would not be available due to on emergency, than we delivered and installed only 2 doors because we had picked up one wrong door and needed to strip and repaint one door. We were than scheduled for delivery on August 24th and you could not make it, leaving installation for August 31st. I will do what we need to do to correct the errors on your doors and we would appreciate if you could contact us. Thank you, Araceli.

What can I say, Peter's was fantastic from start to finish (Carlos from Peter's was awesome). Communication was fantastic. Sooo many times service providers do not communicate. Peter's always informed us what to expect and when to expect it and if something changed, they let us know about it. The china cabinet they repaired was purchased by my wife from on Craigslist and it needed work! I thought the piece was garbage, it was missing lots of the detailed molding that made the piece stand out, the leg was broken, and numerous other imperfections existed. Peter's completely refinished the piece to perfection, all the missing pieces of molding were re-created. Peter's replaced the old handles with decorative knobs and completely covered the holes from the old handles. After they painted it (soft grey), it looked like a designer cabinet that would be sold for thousands of dollars. They took my wife's vision of the piece and But here is the best part... After they carefully delivered the piece, we began putting wallpaper up and had to move the cabinet away from the wall. During the move, we heard a "crack" and discovered that the previously broken leg that Peter's repaired had loosened. Carlos was back in a couple of days, took the cabinet back to the shop, fixed the broken leg, added braces to both rear legs, and added a center brace for additional support...absolutely free! I won't think about calling anyone else for any of my future woodworking needs. Oh yeah, the millwork on the walls of the dining room was fantastic. Everything was perfectly symmetrical and level. I love it. Peter's was professional from start to finish and I greatly appreciate their effort.

The folks I dealt with were extremely professional, punctual and friendly. Overall a great group of people to work with.
Description of Work: Peter's Wood Refinishing came to my rescue, embarrassingly I spilled nail polish remover on our dining room table and damaged the pain & finish dramatically. They refinished my table top and restored it to just like new! The color and finish match was perfect.
This was a large project and Peters was exceptional on all fronts. 1) Performance/Quality. The work product was exceptional. EXTREME attention to detail from bidding and preparation through clean up. 2) People. The people are highly skilled, responsive and friendly. They can deal with changes very well and can work in complex situations with other contractors on site. This is a comment about the entire team from their engagement person through each and everyone of the craftspersons, tapers and cleanup crew. 3) Price. The bid was significantly lower than 3 other bids that I received - which translated into a VERY meaningful savings on this size of a project.I would easily and whole heartedly recommend Peters to ANYONE who has a big or small project for wood refinishing - trim or flooring. The team was a pleasure to work with.
Description of Work: Peters provided the following services: 1) Stripped and Stained two floors of wood in a large landmark (1890's) Evanston house. This included over 15 Doorways and 10 Windows as well as Fireplace, large landing windows, and Stairway handrail and spindles. The woodwork was extremely detailed and required extreme attention to detail. Provided finish carpentry for new closet trim and custom baseboard and ceiling molding. 2) Stripped and Stained 8 rooms of flooring and 40 Stairs including risers. The Flooring like the woodwork was many decades old and had VERY limited sanding available. Peters was the ONLY company (and I had 5 other flooring experts provide bids) that said they could do the stripping and restaining. The other bids all wanted me to rip out my antique quarter sawn floors and replace them. In addition the team repaired flooring in a closet and 3rd floor landing. The result was excellent.
