I locked myself out of my condo on the Sunday before Memorial Day. I searched the internet for local locksmiths and called for estimates. I chose Olympic due to the fact that their quoted fee was $45 for the site visit plus between $15 and $65 for opening the door, depending on the type of lock. The total maximum fee of $110 was in the range of the other locksmiths I called, but I chose Olympic on the off-chance that mine was a simpler lock and would be potentially cheaper. The website gives a guaranteed response time of 20 minutes, specifically: "We guarantee that the response time from the moment you contact our customer service representatives will be no longer than 20 minutes." The actual response time was closer to an hour. When the technician arrived he took one look at the lock and declared that it was a "tough" lock and would require the $65 price. Not exactly a surprise but disappointing. The real kicker was that he had the door open within about 30 seconds after declaring that this "tough" lock would cost the maximum amount to open. I am not exaggerating on that timing. He inserted inflatable bladders above and below the lock, inflated each with a squeeze ball to create a small gap, then popped the lock with a screwdriver. I didn't get a satisfactory answer when I asked why such a tough to open, expensive lock took about 1/2 a minute to open. I'm guessing the $15 lock is the kind on some bathroom doors where you just stick a paper clip in the little hole and it opens. I am not so much disappointed at the total cost, which as I said was within the range of other locksmiths. I am disappointed at the clearly misleading website which states that the response time is guaranteed at 20 minutes, and the misleading statement by the gentleman who answered the phone that there was a possibility of a $15 cost to open the door. I honestly can't imagine a simpler operation to open a lock (other than the sarcastic bathroom lock above). It really took almost no time and no effort at all.
