I have never worked with other decorators, but Nick brings the shopping to me. He has samples to show me or he sends links to pictures. This has made the process so easy. I really enjoy working with Nick. He is offers great ideas but is flexible when my budget or personal taste requires. He has great furniture contacts for reasonably priced, well built materials. I got a great modular couch that can be reconfigured to meet the needs of the group in the room. It was Nick's idea that it be modular because it served many functions but it was also good for getting the pieces into the space. Nick is also willing to disagree. I am paying him for his opinion, so that's what I want. In my experience with Nick decorating is not delivered in a one moment package. One piece comes, a little later some other pieces come. Then there is the final arranging and accessorizing and we are done. It is a bit like completing a puzzle - typically not done in one sitting. Nick is also respectful of budget. It is very easy in decorating to get carried away or make changes that impact the budget. Nick has always offered me options to stay on budget, and when we veer off it has been my decision.
Description of Work: I have used Nick twice now for different projects. The latest was an upgrade of my basement family room. Nick came and looked around, listened to my ideas, then gave me his ideas. I told him my bugdet and he went to work. He picked out fabrics and brought me pictures of couches and a media console. We discussed the options and made some changes. He suggested a basic bar to replace an existing dated bar fixture. Once we had the key pieces, he drew a picture of his vision. Nick managed the contractor and granite guy for the bar replacement.

Nickolas John Interiors did a complete remodel of the first floor of my parents home 2 years ago. This was done for them to enjoy and help increase resale when the need finally was here for the big downsize. It has been amazing to watch the house I grew up in transform into a current, fresh new home. This spring 2012 is when we put our home up for sale. We all never expected it to be at the lowest point in the real estate market. I knew that it needed to show well to earn top dollar. I again called Nick to help with the staging for the sale. I told him the budget for staging was $3000 and he completed the task under budget ($2875). His team came out to the house and in a few days worked magic with new furniture and accessories. Our realtor walked into the home and said that she could not find anything that needed to be done. She said that if all her listings were prepared like our home she would be out of a job since the place look great. She commented that it looked better than most model homes! I took pictures of the before and after, but never posted until now. I knew that after his team did the staging the pictures of this project would finally do it justice. The after pictures are just amazing and I feel truly have helped with our sale. Needless to say the house sold in 5 days with three offers! In this declining market we have a multiple offer situation. My realtor was completely floored! We received full asking price. Not bad when you hear how homes today are sitting on the market for months on end. My parents are bittersweet at moving on from this beautiful home; however, in the new ranch home that we will be closing on, Nick will be involved as we will need him to work his magic again. A new post shall follow soon. Thank you Nick and company for making the transition a quick and easy process.
Description of Work: Complete remodel of the first floor – even a new front door! Completed spring in 2010. Staging for sale in spring of 2012 for $3000. The flooring when the house was built in the 80’s had tile, carpet and linoleum. Over time Pergo covered the linoleum. To say “it was busy” is an understatement. Nick suggested we go with a single flooring material and we followed his advice and went with 4” oak stained a dark brown. This unified the space and made everything look better. We updated the kitchen with new stainless appliances and cabinetry. Nick educated us on all the various ways to have the modern look while keeping the budget in mind. My mom’s favorite thing is the microwave that is also an oven - who knew that such a thing existed!?! We were able to get her wish of two ovens without adding to the original footprint of the kitchen. Plus after opening up a wall, the great room looks like a whole new house with the open floor plan. Nick's paint suggestions were wonderful and his window treatments could not have worked out better! In the living and dining rooms there are bay windows that go from floor to ceiling. Nick's solution is fabric on the sides to soften them and top-down shades to allow light to enter while maintaining privacy. Also the paint selections really showed off all the moldings original to the house. Take a look at the pictures. They say they are worth a 1000 words and they are!

First, this 1 room ?den? took from beginning of July through February to complete. We were referred from a good friend that had a grade A experience, ours was not that positive. Overall, the room turned out lovely, but the experience was annoying and frustrating to say the least. Just a heads up, the website says $95/hour, but it is easier for Nick to round to $100/hour and not get around to changing the website. We were designing a third bedroom/den to have a pull out couch and custom built-ins for additional storage. After meeting with Nick taking the dimensions of the room, Nick came back with intriguing designs and fabrics on paper. (almost 2 months later, but this was just the beginning). Once we approved the design, Nick brought the contractor into the picture and both came over to discuss all the designs of the room and took additional measurements and turn specific designs into reality in our tiny space. It all went down hill from here. Nick sent us the custom built ins pictures from the contractors warehouse and saw many errors and changes to the original design and concept. Nick never caught the errors and thought it looked awesome. Not sure where all the miscommunication came from but things were built incorrectly or not built at all. Nick did not stand by his design and we were stuck with incorrect furniture as well as contractors having to rebuild furniture. The contractors did fix as many errors as they could to satisfy us, but Nick never advocated for us and stepped out of the picture a lot and made us deal with them directly, even though he was the designer and referral source. Nick charged us hourly for going to the warehouse and discussing measurements and design for multiple hours but still with multiple mistakes. Not sure what they ever discussed since it was WRONG. Examples, file drawers turned into open cubbies, decorative legs turned into square stubs, 3 cabinets tuned into 6 cabinets, TV stand was supposed to be a triangle corner unit turned into a larger rectangle piece. Nicks designs were not followed but Nick approved the final product and never discussed with us. The main issue is that Nick has poor follow through with his designs, terrible communication skills with follow up and follow through. He is unprofessional and does not stand by his own work or advocate for his clients. He blames others for mistakes and it is never his fault. He designed a window shade for us and all we paid for was labor. He had left over fabric of his own that he gave to us for free. When the shade arrived and installed it was too short. We confronted Nick about it and his response was ?that is what you get for a budget?. The billing was a mess. After collecting his $750 deposit, it took him 5 months to give us a bill and ?make up? his hours for what it went toward. We paid him for time, but still had no room or products to show for it. Watch out for the billing. He bills 20 min meetings and calls it an hour. He bills meeting with contractors, but no idea what he discusses for multiple hours since the project was incorrect. When it came down to design, I was the one that picked out all the fabric on my own, picked out my own couch and purchased my own couch, while he billed for time to look up couch options, when he ended up using my own choice and fabric anyway. On a positive note, the room turned out functional and aesthetically pleasing. But to actually work with him on a professional level and have the design turn out correctly it was a true headache and gave us unnecessary stress.

Nick was amazing. We had multiple meetings and conversations about what to do with our space, and Nick really came through. He was able to listen to what we thought we wanted, and turn those ideas into a cohesive plan. Starting with detailed sketches, Nick helped us with painting, window treatments, new furniture, some light construction and general staging. His team of subcontractors were fantastic and we have gone back to them individually for other projects. The lines of communication were always open and even though the process took a long time given furniture lead-times, we always felt Nick was on top of things and willing to entertain our questions at all times. We are extremely happy with the end results and would not hesitate to use Nick again.

Nick did an incredible job translating our wish and thoughts into reality. He handled the whole project from start to finish including bringing in the contractors, designing the office, mudroom and storage rooms. He also chose paint colors, light fixtures, furniture etc. He was incredible and I would recommend him w/o hesitation.
Description of Work: We had a list of things we wanted to have happen in our house including changing a dining room into an office, creating a mudroom, building a storage room, fixing a bunch of problems from a previous contractor, interior painting and installing closet systems. The last time we did a major remodel we made the mistake of not hiring an interior designer. We vowed not to make that mistake again. Lucky for us this time we found Nick.

We have never hired an interior designer and Nick made us feel comfortable from our first meeting. He was extremely responsive and helpful to us and in answering questions our contractor had. The project is almost finished and we will certainly hire Nick again to help us "see" the possibilities!
Description of Work: We were remodeling our basement/family room/game room after having water damage. Nick came into our basement with the walls down to the studs and gave us a design that included electrical and furniture placement, as well as, color, fabric, flooring, trim work, tile options. He instinctively new what style would appeal to us, but was also willing to tailor it to suit us - we barely changed a thing!

I needed help with changing my boring, builder?s nothing special fireplace into a showpiece. I knew that Nick at Nickolas John Interiors would be able to help me solve this problem. I love water features and have one in my outdoor space, but how does one bring that indoors? Well, Nick figured it out! It is a fourteen foot tall, stainless steel, water wall. He knew what I wanted even though I couldn?t quite express it. He found an all in one unit that just needed to be installed and plumbed ? that?s it. All I needed to do was have my contractor install it. He found a self-filling, auto draining/cleaning unit at a reasonable price. I would have never had thought that this would be something you could buy complete. I assumed that I would have to have it custom made at a huge expense, but not so. Thank you, Nick ? you really know what is out there and where to find the most unique things. This is the talk of all my friends and my housewarming could not have been better. Fire and Water can really be combined.

After buying my standard, ?builder?s grade? condo in 2005 I knew that I needed to add a rooftop deck. That was the reason why I bought the unit in the first place. I have since used Nickolas John Interiors on other projects and referred him to friends and family. After I closed and had the steel staircase built to the roof, and my heart sank when I walked up there for the first time. For whatever reason my particular building has various piping, venting and such all in the middle of the roof. The builder?s model unit has no obstructions and is an open space ? this is what I expected to have. Not the case and I was so upset. How am I to build a roofdeck with all this stuff in the way? Nick was great. He calmed me down and went right to work with various solutions. What we decided to do was build a bench and bar right over the obstructions. This allowed me to have an outdoor kitchen since a bar and sink with plumbing could be built right in. Nick suggested adding a refrigerator and an ice-maker so it really would be an additional outdoor kitchen designed for entertaining. Those items are neatly tucked into the back of the storage benches. Nick is brilliant and has given me the best roofdeck on the block. Yes, I am the envy of the neighborhood. I finally found my SD card with all the photos so I am now able to upload and give NJI a review on this project. As you can see the finished product is spectacular including a lounge area to catch some rays during the day and then turns into an evening entertainment zone with a fire pit. Yes, that is a fire pit that is made to be right on the wood deck! The built in bar with seating is one of my guests? favorite spots. All I need is wait staff - one server and a bartender should do it? It looks like my roofdeck could be in a design magazine or rival any South Beach club. I feel that this has added value to my home and makes my condo a highly desirable unit for resale.

Nick was an unbelievable help for a difficult situation. We were thrust into a renovation by a house fire so I was not prepared for a renovation. Nick was such a valuable resource in so many ways. His creativity and design are amazing. We had a difficult space that he was able to make sense of and work outside the box. He was able to figure out what I wanted and what I needed to take a very difficult kitchen space and open it up and add a bathroom. He also had many vendors for cabinets and lighting he was able to turn to that fit our needs and budget. My kitchen is the truly the heart of the house now. We also hired him to pick out lighting, paint colors inside and outside and to consult on difficult decisions we had for the house. He was also able to consult with contractors and convey our needs when we were not available. He was able to flawlessly pull together the theme of the house as well as integrate our stuff into the design of the house. He was quick to respond and very attentive to our needs. I would highly recommend Nickolas John Interiors. Thank you Nick!!

Really a tough situation after a home fire, it turned out better than the original. Beautiful wood cabinets from a local vendor I use replaced the laminate, stone replaced the laminate counters, and gorgeous hardwoods and lighting completed the unique shape. We were able to take a small kitchen, make it bigger in feel and actual storage and even niche out a small powder room. I am happy to have my name on this project, and to have worked with these folks.

Nickolas could not have been more accommodating, pleasant to work with and professional. The design for the bedroom was everything I had asked for however it simply was out of our budget. Nickolas advised us he would tweak the design to reduce costs and even suggested we check out other contractors to see if his prices were good. That is the sign of a professional and confident designer. De to some other expenses awe elected to postpone the bedroom but we will use him when we are ready. During the process I asked for help with my horrible dining room chairs. He provided me with some great looking chairs at a very reasonable cost.

I am a repeat customer of NJI. I have used him for several projects over the past few years. When my parents decided to update and completely gut their master bathroom built in 1984, I knew just who to call. Nickolas was extremely helpful and worked with us. He engendered wonderful overall concept and worked this into his design a double vanity from Pottery Barn at my request. He took the time to meet me and find the perfect slab for the tub to match the Pottery Barn piece. We are on a tight budget and he even managed to include a steam shower into his design with some really good cost saving ideas. He has a way of listening and resolving the most difficult of construction "problems." We are not the easiest people to please (I will admit that I am a stickler for details) and he always was a professional. He even worked with our own contractor and was always there to answer his calls when my mother or I was not available. The project was completed on time - actually early as it was a birthday present for my father and needed to be finished by May 2nd.

I guess I?m the outlier here. This guy provided us with probably the single most negative experience we?ve had through a number of projects at both our houses over the last 24 years. I won?t catalogue all that he did wrong, but let me ht a few highlights. We hired Nick to help us with a bathroom. We were doing a full demo on it, and we just wanted help picking materials and colors. That?s it. When he arrived for the initial consultation I had a portfolio of photos torn from magazines broken into groups (lighting, tile, mirrors, etc.) to give him some idea of what we were generally looking for. We gave him an idea of price. I told him that while I knew marble was something many people put in their bathrooms I did not want any marble. He went away and came back a few weeks later and showed his design concept: a marble floor and a marble countertop. He tried to tell us that travertine wasn?t marble??!? And he charged us for that time he wasted. A smart person would have cut him loose at that point. It got worse. He regularly came late or missed appointments. He seems to have a real problem with mornings. He ?forced? us (OK, no guns, but he wasn?t open to working with others) to work with his people. The tile people were rude and incompetent; the plumbing fixtures people were that plus ridiculously overpriced. (I finally went somewhere else for all the plumbing.) But the real topper was the granite. He told me had found the most beautiful and perfect piece of granite and that he was going to save us lots money because one of his people had this special leftover piece that was just what we needed. It was a beautiful piece of granite, but it had nothing to do with the rest of the bathroom. ?Oh no,? he said, ?it?s perfect.? Of course it was a disaster. I finally got rid of him?after paying him a gross amount of money?and hired two other separate design people to come out to look at the bathroom. I told them that I had done it all and couldn?t figure out what I had done wrong. I said nothing about Nick and nothing about the granite. (I didn?t want them to think they were speaking ill of another ?professional? and I didn?t want to color their analysis.) Both told me that the countertop had nothing to do with the room. (One asked me if I ?got it on sale.? Both asked why I chose it.) At that point I did call Nick out and give him a chance to make it right: chose a good piece of granite and help me get it installed. He took some pictures with his phone and later told how really fantastic it looked. I finally hired one of the two firms and today the bathroom is done. (I had his granite ripped out.) Dishonest, Inarticulate, late, untalented. I?d be happy to share his emails, my photos, and other stories (seriously, it?s even worse than this prose sounds) in an attempt to save you the absolute frustration of working with this guy. Remodeling is hard enough; hire someone who won?t make it worse.

I guess you cannot make everyone happy. The client was not willing to listen to the information I gave him, nor was he willing to listen to the fact that I could help him with the work that was being done. (used all own sources, paid more in all but one case) I offered (4) bathroom designs and he was sure from the get-go of the cold lifeless aesthetic that he wanted. Which is fine, but then when you call a professional to offer services to ensure a space is warm and full of life then you need to be open. I will be the first to admit that he did have a laundry list of issues when planning this bath. I guess NJI is the scapegoat. The fact that all products were purchased independently and ultimately changed from the initial design is one single example. Nickolas John Interiors was not allowed to project manage or assist the client with the actual construction, as he was overly concerned with the "design fee" When the bath does not then look to standard set by NJI, I cannot take responsibility. I assure you NJI made amends on all obligations. I will also admit, that he is accurate, I did miss an appointment as I wrote it in my planner on the wrong day. This is not a standard NJI experience.

Very well. We are not people who like to rely on designers but we respect their ideas. What was great was that Nick respected our ideas too. We had a limited budget after a renovation and Nick was able to work with that too.
Description of Work: There was a $500 retainer for ideas. Nick gave several excellent suggestions. We bought 4 perfect dining chairs that really made our family room look put together. He suggested a table and paint color that was right on. Buying a sofa did not work out as it had to be from a picture but he was a gentleman and did not pressure us.

We had moved into our farm house and had been living there for about a year when we called Nick to help us with ideas on how we can utilize our space- we had basically been living in one room of the home and the other rooms were not utilized. Nick helped us with transforming the dining room into a family room, and making the kitchen into a true kitchen He did this all by utilizing new furniture, accessories, and wall color. Now we utililize all of our space much more efficiently. Nick was awesome to work with and he knew exactly what my style was. He knew what type of furniture to buy with our growing family. I would highly recommend Nick and now love walking into our pretty house!
Description of Work: Nick helped us reconfigure our house (moved in the year before) to utilize all of our space more efficiently. He helped us pick paint colors, furniture, and accessories.

Nick was a prince. I had never worked with an interior designer before and this was such a modest project compared to what he usually does. I have a frame bungalow with a roof that needed replacing, and figured it was a good time to put in a proper bathroom on the second floor and skylights. My sisters urged me to have a pro look at the space and make suggestions. Nick was in my house for about an hour or so, and made suggestions that would never have occurred to me, but that turned out to make a huge difference in the space and its functionality, like shifting a wall out to the next joist to give me a bigger bathroom, or using natural stone for the floors and shower walls instead of ceramic tile and doing drawings to show my contractor how to place the stone for maximum effect. Out of my whole project, Nick's relatively small consulting fee probably gave the biggest return on investment. I will definitely use him in the future.
Description of Work: I wanted to add a dormer so as to put in a shower when my roof on my bungalow was replaced and needed an interior designer to look at the space and advise me. He came to my house, made suggestions, then followed up with detailed drawings that I could give to the contractor and use when pulling the homeowner construction permit.

From my first phone conversation with Nick, he made me feel very, very comfortable. We will continue to go to him when we are ready to make major decisions and purchases.
Description of Work: Nick came into our home, like a very friendly family doctor visiting a sick patient. I was embarrassed about the state of our interior design, mostly pieced together with hand-me-downs, but he was extremely easy to work with. The work we paid him for was to help us pick window treatments throughout the house. He also arranged to have the windows measured, the blinds and shades made and installed. Our conversations with him have also given us a long range plan and a sense of priorities.

He offered a number of other really "dead on" tips for specific furniture or accessory, paint color and design options that we ultimately acted on within six months and when we did - they all made a tremendous difference and got our place to where we were looking it to be. He was also very patient and supportive - as we're partial do-it-"yourselfers" who'd done quite a bit of renovation ourselves and then needed a really good coach to help pull these pieces together. He also found a few really nice touches for key rooms that turned out to not only look gorgeous, but also to be able to be done on a reasonable budget. We can't say enough about how well everything turned out.
Description of Work: Nick helped us develop an interior design strategy to bring together several rooms, choose window treatments styles and colors and to identify select additions to bring the house together. We had several firms come in and take a look and offer ideas. Nick was the only person to identify the top challenge we faced with one of our key rooms, quickly got us a design and helped us pick the specific treatments and styles. He really worked to understand how we lived and what we were looking for (even though we couldn't say it specifically) and he has a really exceptional eye.
