Charles's team showed up on time and got immediately to work. They took very impressive care of my (relatively) brand new hardwood floors by putting down sheets of wood and cloth tarps. They also sealed off the area with plastic sheeting to keep the dust to a minimum. Work took two days. They disposed of the old plaster and drywall and cleaned up the work area very nicely. A fair bit of dust made it out to the rest of the house, but I don't know how one could avoid it all. They also put a good coat of primer on the new drywall which made painting very easy. And they did a brilliant job at getting to the wall blocked by the spacepack. This had to have been very difficult. I was very impressed by this. Charles's was not the lowest estimate. His quote was reasonable, but I was most impressed with his professionalism/personality. I felt that he was interested in making sure I was happy and my needs were taken care of. I definitely got my money's worth.
Description of Work: Two projects simultaneously. (1) Hall closet had been very poorly maintained. Plaster had been duct-taped in place and sheets of luan (?) screwed into the plaster. Walls were functionally unstable. Work was to remove all the old plaster in the closed from the walls and ceiling and put up new drywall. Additional complication was that there was a spacepack airconditioner in this space that could not be moved during the work. (2) Ripped out a poorly constructed built-in book case, remove the damaged drywall from the area of the former bookcase and replace with new drywall.

(cont) He said ok, but then insisted on fixing it, stating that he "want us to be happy." We told him several times that we didn't need him to fix it and he continued to insist. So, we said fine. He took it upon himself to paint the ceiling so that "we would be happy." The day before he was to fix his mistake we called and verified with him that we were going to leave a check for $575 (minus the $100) and $20 for the gallon of the paint and he said, "yes." Over a month later I asked him to provide me with an invoice for my records and he then basically said, sure, oh, and you still owe me $100! WHAT? He says that he told us we owed him $100 at the completion of the job. I need to set the record straight- THAT CONVERSATION NEVER TOOK PLACE. It is truly too bad that this happened because yes, Charles is a "nice" guy and after he fixed his mistake the kitchen looks good, but he is not honest and I don't appreciate that. I feel this needed to be posted for anyone considering his services.
Description of Work: I am the client who submitted the report on 3/23/07 and since I can't edit it I am making a new report to give my complete disgust with Charles McFarland(repair to drywall). The only reason we gave him such a positive report in the first place was because he "supposedly" knocked $100 off the total cost due to our dissatisfaction with his paint job. Before we hired him we asked him FLAT OUT, will it be a problem to match the paint in the kitchen ceiling to the rest of the ceiling and he said, "No." To make a long story short, at the completion of the job there was the line on the ceiling showing exactly what he said he could avoid. When I brought this to his attention he told me that he never said he could match it and that he only said he could match the paint on the walls! That is a huge LIE! Then, since we were upset we told him just to leave it as is and we would have someone else fix it but that we feel he should take $100 off.

We had a great experience with McFarland Remodeling. Charles and Wilson were courteous, on-time and cleaned up after themselves. They fully tarped our furniture and vacuumed up at the end of each day. The plasterwork looks great -- you cannot tell there was work done and it would be hard to guess that a huge fireplace was there just a few days ago. We will certainly use them again for other projects.
Description of Work: Charles and his assistant, Wilson, removed a non-functional ventless gas fireplace and demolished a lannonstone fireplace surround and hearth, insulated and repaired the wall behind the fireplace, painted the wall to match the surrounding wall and installed baseboard on the wall. Also, moved an outlet and phone jack that had been on the side of the fireplace to the wall.

His bid was the most expensive and had the least detail. We had to call him twice to even get the estimate. He seemed very disorganized and unprofessional. He came unprepared without plans we had faxed him provided by our designer.

It was a small job so I know it wasn't the most attractive work to take on. Charles suggested cutting the molding to size, which required him to come back after the blinds were installed (more work for him, but ended up with higher quality results). Charles and his staff were accommodating, quick, efficient, and friendly, and did quality work. I would highly recommend him and he will be the first person I call to do future work. The cost came in under the original estimate (yay!).
Description of Work: Charles McFarland & his crew removed some crown molding so that I could put up vertical blinds, cut the molding to size, & put it back up on the wall.

Charles was a total pleasure to work with. I will call him again for a future project. He was easy to work with and very responsive. Charles' prices are a little high, but it was worth it. Overall, one of my favorite Angie's List finds. Good quality, good communication.

Charles McFarland oversaw the work personally, he always returned my calls, was always on time. He had his subs do the work, kept a close eye on them, kept them on time and did not inflate final bills. (he charged what his estimate was and price was fair). I highly recommend this company.

Charles was very professional and came right away as we were desperate to find a good drywall contractor after our original one didn't work out. He even got me an estimate on a Sunday in order to start work right away. However, his price was nearly two times the 3 other estimates we had for the same work. We had 3 estimates for all four floors of drywall around $22k - and Charles estimated $11k just for the lower level! This would equate to about $44k for the whole building. I could not justify this price difference even though we liked him.

The work that Charles did was beautiful. We felt that his prices were a little expensive, and the workers he hired were not reliable. Charles, however, was reliable in the extreme and worth the money. He was prompt, personable and easy to communicate with. He took our small project very seriously. When things did not go well with his workers, he showed up and worked on the project himself. We really liked working with him and felt he was very trustworthy.

The owner Charles is a very friendly and helpful. Came out three times to visit to provide revised quotes. Took time to answer many questions and followed up with me regularly. I felt very comfortable with him and it was a hard choice not to choose McFarland, even though his price was higher than the contractor I chose to go with. I would definitely consider McFarland in future projects.

I did not choose Mr. McFarland because I thought he was vague and pricey.
Description of Work: Charles McFarland returned my call and was very polite and listened to my description of what I wanted done. He arrived on time for estimate. Took about 10 minutes to tell me what he was going to do. I did not quite agree with his process because it would leave a wall open in my unit for several days.

Very good experience with Charles and his crew. Since our job involved plaster demo, we were fully prepared for a total mess. However, his crew kept the job site immaculate and were very careful not to damage the house as they removed debris. Charles was always available to take our calls. The only drawback to the experience was the carpenters he recommended. He tried to ride herd over them as best he could, but they delayed our project's completion by several weeks. During this time, he was always in touch with us to let us know how the job was progressing.
Description of Work: Tore down failing plaster, installed new insulation, hanged new drywall and installed new baseboards. Also installed insulation in basement and assisted us in finding a carpenter and electrician to handle other aspects of the job.

I am very satisfied with the results. The closet originally was framed unevenly and was not deep enough to hang coats. It is now square and is just deep enough to hang coats (deepening further was not possible). As for the entrance walls - they look practically new. Charles even left me with 1/2 bucket of primer/sealer he recommended to get me started with my paint work. He was very willing to work to my requirements. Charles was my first quote and was available to start the next week - so I didn't have a chance to compare prices across contractors. The price seemed fair - and again, I'm very satisfied with the results.
Description of Work: Charles' workers gutted a closet in my front foyer and reframed it to increase the closet depth so that it would accommodate coats. In addition, they skim coated all four walls and ceiling of the entrance way to fix multiple cracks and imperfections.

We had an excellent experience with McFarland Remodeling Inc. The owner, Charles McFarland, is a personable and trustworthy gentleman. What impressed me most was the fact that he arrived at my house to inspect the area in question and to issue an estimate on the very same day that I first contacted him. After we agreed on a price, work began the next day. Each phase of the project was completed in a timely and orderly fashion exactly as promised and the work area was always left clean. In addition, Charles went beyond the scope of our engagement by trying to put me in contact with a roofer who could identify the source of the leak. I recommend this company without any qualifications.
Description of Work: McFarland Remodeling Inc. was hired to remove the drywall from a closet as well as a small storage space above the same closet. This was done in order to identify the source of a leak which had caused mold to grow in both areas. After the drywall was removed, the source of the leak was discovered and fixed. About a week later, McFarland Remodeling Inc. returned to replace the drywall, to paint, to replace the baseboards and to reinstall the closet organization system.

Very good personality. On time and responsive. Logical in finding source(s) of leak but this is not his expertise. When we found out that our painter could fix the ceiling and do the final painting with texturing, we switched to painter. Closing bill from Charles seemed a bit high.

Charles is a good guy to work with. Always timely and very professional. Charles and his workers are just terrific. Besides being incredibly pleasant to deal with, Charles is the most helpful, outgoing and knowledgeable contractor I have ever worked with. They were conscientious, neat, and polite. The work they did looks fantastic. Taking a space that was a bombed-out disaster, they created a room worthy of Architectural Digest. The drywall they put in has been repeatedly commented on as top-notch, and the other services they provided were equally good. I would be happy to provide verbal commentary for anyone who has any questions, but overall, I can't speak highly enough of the work that was done for me.
Description of Work: Charles McFarland and his employees remodeled an entire condo for me. They drywalled the whole place and fixed the plumbing, as well as putting up walls and creating an entire bathroom. They also tiled that new bathroom for me, put in closets, electrical outlets, ceiling fans, and helped me find an effective HVAC provider.

A++ for customer service. Charles responded to my call and came out for a quote quickly. He did a great job of communicating about how the pricing worked and coordinating the logistics. He is very knowledgeable about general contracting issues. His crew did the work in a professional manner and cleaned-up after themselves. We'll use him for other general remodeling needs in the future. I would not hesitate to recommend him.
Description of Work: After a sewage back-up in our finished basement we had to have the trim and drywall removed (about 4'' up). Charles and his crew replaced the drywall (including tape, mud, and sand) and painted (2 coats on new drywall and 1 on existing). The area included 2 bedrooms, long hallway, small bathroom, and laundry area. He also referred us to his brother for some plumbing work which was done very professionally at a price far better than the other quotes we received.

I am very pleased with Charles McFarland and his employees. Charles is very affordable, quick to respond and is accommodating to his clients. I have been burned by previous experiences with contractors (from inefficiency to outright thieviery) and I was wary of having to renovate again. This, so far, has been a very good experience and I trust Charles to not only do an excellent job but to make it as pleasant and easy going as possible. He is willing to help out in any way he sees possible to make the project a success. I would recommend Charles McFarland for any job needed.
Description of Work: Charles and his crew are still working on my kitchen renovation which includes knocking down a wall and a half, rebuilding a new wall to extend the size of my kitchen and accommodate a breakfast bar, move electrical outlets and add two additional ones, tear out old cabinetry and install new, replace lighting fixtures, and connect new appliances. We have discussed further work of taking out bathtub tile and putting in new plumbing fixtures and replacing the tile. Charles also recommended a kitchen design consultant who is assisting with the layout of the kitchen.
