Matt provides both a low end and a high end dollar amount to accommodate unforeseen surprises. While I was impressed with Matt's attention to detail, quoting procedure, and his overall pitch, his low-end price was more than 50% higher than other contractors. His high end quote was double the price of 4 other well-liked Angie's List contractors who all came in around the same range. I think it would have been a good experience working with Matt and I would have been pleased with the final project, however there was no explanation or reason for his quote to be so high.

Matt and his assistant Jan were both very accommodating, and Jan followed up regularly to check the status of the bidding process and answer any questions. They also took me to look at projects that were in process so I could get a first-hand view of the quality of their work. While I appreciated the flexibility and detail of the estimating process that Matt uses, in the end, it was the reason I didn't select them to do my project. The potential cost range was $5,000 wide. While I was comfortable at the lower end of their range, the upper end was too high for my budget. I was also able to find another well-regarded contractor on Angie's List who was willing to provide me with a considerably lower fixed price. He picked up over-sized materials for me, and didn't have me on the clock while he was doing it.
Description of Work: Gut and remodel a master bathroom, including installing new air tub, new porcelain-tiled shower with multiple shower heads, double bowl vanity, recessed medicine cabinets. Only standard construction materials, like wood and screws, were included in the quote. Estimate $20,000.

Matt and his guys did a great job. Basically it was the tail end of a project I had started and I just wanted it finished. They had an opening in their schedule and were able to accommodate me immediately, which was a huge plus. The crew showed up every morning on time, finished on schedule and were accommodating when I added a couple of items to the list. They were right in line with their estimate and probably would have been a little lower if I didn't add some of the extras. But in a nutshell, quality work and a great job. They may be a little higher cost than others out there but well worth it, you get what you pay for. I would use them again and highly recommend them. Plus, they deliver what they say they will.
Description of Work: Main work was building the shower stall and pan from scratch. They also tiled the shower, did some general plumbing work, hung a couple doors and trim work.

All the work was done when scheduled. The team always adhered to the condo rules in my building. They were punctual, courteous and tidy. They always kept us aware of any issues that developed. The communication with Matt (owner) and Paul (foreman) was excellent. If any of the on site workers had communication issues, they made sure to call the foreman who was able to explain everything to our satisfaction. Matt was always reachable by phone. We did address an issue of a paint job that took longer than I expected, with a favorable outcome for me. Matt is very approachable for both negative and positive feedback. I will be using them again.
Description of Work: I had a bathroom totally gutted and remodeled. We changed from a tub to a shower; installed new tile on walls & floor; installed new cabinetry and wall feature; changed from 2 sinks to one and installed new lighting.

I can't say enough about how smoothly our remodel went. We will most definitely hire Mahogany Builders in the future for our next big project. Matt started with a very accurate estimate for our work. Once they started, his crew arrived on time every single day to our house and were courteous and professional. Matt guided us step by step through the remodel process recommending excellent and reasonably priced contacts for picking out bathroom fixtures, countertops, tiles, and flooring. There isn't a detail in our home that Matt didn't go over with us before installation. Every outlet in it's proper place, every paint color is perfect--everything in our home is exactly the way we asked for it to be. Matt was available to us on his cell 24/7 from the beginning of the job until the end to patiently answer all our questions along the way. Although the work is finished, Matt and his crew have returned, free of charge, to take care of a few last minute fix ups. OUTSTANDING!!!
Description of Work: Matt and his team completely redid our 1888 worker's cottage. Work included two full bathroom guts, new floors throughout the house, moving walls, an entire new gourmet kitchen, new windows, painting, and extensive plumbing and electrical work.

Matt came through with the quote and was very persistent in making sure he made contact with me. His quote was very comparable to the others that I gathered. Apologizing for not being to do the job, he offered me recommendations on two other contractors who were better positioned to work in high-rise settings. He was very dependable and pleasant to work with.
Description of Work: Matt Lederer visited the site of a condo I have purchased and am planning to rehabilitate it. It was very easy to reach him and to set up the appointment. He appeared on time and was very thorough in his inspection of the site. He explained to me up front that he did not typically do work in high-rise buildings because, in my case, Saturday work was not allowed. Nevertheless, he promised to provide a solid estimate of what the project would cost.

From our first phone call inquiry to Matt, we were very impressed with his responsiveness and professionalism. The estimate came in a range detailing all of the work planned and estimated hours to complete each aspect of our job. Matt took the time to explain all of the numbers and all of the steps of the project. Once construction began, the crew arrived every day on time as expected. The entire team was incredibly courteous and clean and always wanted their work to be to our satisfaction. I would strongly recommend Mahogany Builders.
Description of Work: We used Mahogany Builders to remodel two bathrooms in our condo. We wanted to upgrade the materials used and make some changes to make the space more functional. While Mahogany Builders did not specifically get involved in the design, Matt was a great resource of recommendations of places to look at materials and people to work with throughout the project. This was our first remodeling project and Matt was incredibly patient with us and helped us learn a great deal throughout the project.

Matt Lederer and his team members are very thoughtful and knowledgeable, shared their knowledge and opinions as well as their skill as we made major plans and day-to-day decisions. This was very helpful in making final decisions about many details - tile design, final color combinations, etc. They arrived on time each morning (7a.m.), and we would talk about the work of the day and about the decisions that would have to be made soon. They even helped with a plumbing emergency (totally unrelated to their work). Work was done with care and attention to detail. It was a pleasure to work with them each day; and they did an excellent job of cleaning up. Upon completion of entire job, they scheduled someone to come for a morning and do a thorough cleaning. This team is helpful and respectful of your home. I can't imagine better folk to work with. And I am absolutely pleased with the quality of their work. And work was completed in approximately the estimated time frame.
Description of Work: Mahogany Builders did a complete remodeling of the bathroom. Tore out old tile, fixtures and ceiling; installed new drywall, ceiling, all new plumbing and electrical, new tub, tub doors, toilet, pedestal sink, new lighting and ceiling fan; also tiled and painted.

Matt was extremely professional in his presentation. He didn't come in saying he was going to be the cheapest, and was very realistic in his assessment. I particularly liked that his bid spelled out exactly his assumptions on time per taste and hourly billing. By far, the most professional presentation and bid I received. Additionally, I received a bid from Mahogany within 48 hours, as promised. Other contractors which bid on the project did not submit there bids for 2 weeks. We did not use Mahogany because one bid I received was 30% less than Mahogany's estimate. Since I did not see that the project was going to be too complex and that I would have an opportunity to "manage" the contractor and progress (given that I work out of my house), I decided to use another contractor. However, I will without a doubt call Mahogany on future projects.

Matt came out quickly after we talked by phone. He provided a very detailed proposal on the spot with his laptop based estimating tool. Their quotes are "transparent" in design and he explains exactly where additional time or expenses maybe be needed. Our project actually came in below budget! Once they began the work they were prompt with their starting times everyday and worked through to the completion of the project. We are very happy with the quality of the work and will definitely use Mahogany again.
Description of Work: Mahogany remodeled one of our bathrooms; work consisted of taking out old ceramic tile floor, sink and vanity base, light fixture, and toilet. They installed new pedestal sink, toilet, recessed medicine cabinet, light fixture, and new marble tile floor. They had to work around some un-for-seen items (plumbing & electric) that were in the wall when they opened it up to frame for the medicine cabinet.

Matt's quote was the highest of the four we received, but we decided it was not only the most professional (he brought an electrician and his foreman on the first visit before he did the quote) but also the most realistic. Using Excel spreadsheets, he made clear how the expense would be figured and gave both high and low estimates. His challenge in working with us was coordinating with an architect as well as the three co-owners of the condo - and the condo management! He handled all of that with calmness and efficiency. He was always accessible, and his crew was polite, hard working, and competent. In one case, he believed the workmanship was not up to his standards and he voluntarily offered to redo the work or reduce our cost. (We chose the redo, and it was much better.) Though the project grew like Topsy, he kept to his time line and met his schedule.
Description of Work: A four room condo in an old Lincoln Park Building (1920) was in poor condition. The entire condo was rewired (which necessitated extensive plaster work and repainting) and new circuits and electric box added. Kitchen and bath were both gutted and redone completely, some outside walls had insulation added and a window replaced in the bathroom. Two radiators were refurbished and one replaced. The bathroom had radiant heat in the floor installed as well as a towel bar heater unit. Kitchen plans involved retaining old Maple floor, installing new cabinets, wall tile, zodiac counter, all new appliances etc. We have had rave reviews, and we agree. (Matt's share of the project cost was $40,000. The rest of the cost was upgrades and special orders on our part.)

I received an estimate on both projects. The cost of the bathroom remodel was higher than I could justify (more than I'd recoup when I sell my condo), but I still wanted to do the laundry room project. They told me that the project was too small for them and they could not make time for such a small project (the project entails installation of new circuitry and 220V plugs, running electrical from one side of a condo unit to the other, going into walls and drywalling and painting, running pipes (supply & drain) through walls through the unit, ventilation, removal of old cabinetry, installation of new cabinetry, and installation of floor molding - but this was too small a project?) Overall, they seem like a professional company -- returned phone calls, were courteous, etc. It is rather frustrating, though, that what seems like a relatively significant project to me involving electrical, plumbing, drywalling, ventilation, and cabinet-making can be dismissed as a waste of their time.
Description of Work: I asked them to provide an estimate on two projects -- a bathroom remodel and the installation of washer/dryer hook-ups and ventilation and installation of new cabinetry in a spare room to turn it into a laundry room.

IN RESPONSE TO THE CUSTOMER’S CRITIQUE, THE FACTS OF HIS ACCOUNT ARE RELATIVELY CORRECT. It went well - took far longer than expected, but more on my account than theirs. There were a couple of measuring glitches, one which required removing and re-installing a countertop, the other which we caught early on but which was a delay. The workers were here promptly at 7 every morning and worked straight through until dinnertime. They also worked 1/2 day on Saturday. I never saw them even take breaks! It was a big job and I was more than satisfied with their diligence in completing it. The only potentially serious error came in measuring for the granite countertop. Matt Lederer, the owner of Mahogany Builder, was more than fair in dealing with that error. The flooring person was the weakest, mostly sloppy. Floors look OK to the casual eye. Matt offered to redo. The project cost more than budgeted - Matt was the one who worried most about the budget and I kept going over it by selecting more expensive cabinets, hardware, granite, etc. than we had anticipated.
Description of Work: Mahogany Builders was responsible for the complete remodeling of my kitchen. They demolished the existing kitchen to the brick outer walls of the house, re-wired, put in a new ceiling and floors, hung cabinets and did carpentry to integrate appliances, put in new lighting and plumbing, installed granite countertops, tiled, painted - the whole thing.

Started great, but quickly deteriorated. We wanted very specific things, so much so that we provided drawings and detailed plans. What we got back from Matt had nothing to do with what we provided. From there on, we had to flyspeck every detail as numerous errors were made with tile installation, measurements for fixtures (resulting in a toilet whose back was 6" from the wall!), incorrect cabinet doors, etc. These were finally made good. We also experienced substantial delays. Workers left our house unlocked when they left for the day, despite several warnings about same. Finally, final requests (lien waivers, etc.) have never been complied with.

I love these guys!!! I was given a clear, concise, easy-to-understand, highly detailed estimate, with an upper end and a lower end. I was given appropriate caution about what potential eventualities could affect the cost. I could easily look at it, see exactly what work was planned, how much each part of the job would cost, and how long it would take. I was introduced to every member of the crew, so I knew who belonged in my home. I found these gentlemen extremely respectful of my home. They got rid of bulky unneeded wrappings as they went along. There were never any unnecessary materials or tools in my home, and everything possible was cleaned every night before they left for the day. They were very conscious of keeping as much of the bathroom workable as possible, always. I first initiated contact with Matt on Sept. 3; the job begun on October 9 and was completed October 31. It probably would have been done a week or so sooner if the vanity had arrived in the store sooner.
Description of Work: My only bathroom was redone. The tiles were removed from the bath enclosure walls and from the floor. The jacuzzi bathtub was removed and replaced by a tub that is wider and deeper. The bath enclosure got new tiles, as did the bathroom floor. Walls were prepped and painted, and the vanity, countertop, and all hardware were replaced. (Ceiling was painted twice, as I changed my mind about the color.)

Matt Lederer and Mahogany Builders were a pleasure to work with from start to finish. Matt was always punctual and immediately available. His initial quote was mapped out in an Excel spreadsheet, and he would regularly email me updates on the work in the same format. He had lots of practical advice and saved me a lot of money with some of his suggestions. He was flexible and open to helping out with small handyman-type details like planing the bathroom door to make sure that it closed more easily and adjusting the locks so that they closed more easily. All of the work was high quality and I would not hesitate to use his company again or to recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: I had the kitchen of an old apartment building totally remodeled and some work done on a bathroom in the same place. This involved removing the old cabinets, designing a configuration for the new cabinets and appliances, building out a wall, tiling the bathroom floor, painting, and doing a lot of ''detail'' work.

Matt is a great person; friendly, sharp, thorough, patient, and creative. He gave a detailed estimate, which he burned on to a CD for us. The estimate was done on excel, and he also explained the details. He showed us various pictures of his work, and followed up with an e-mail several days later. We decided not to use Mahogany because the price was a bit high for us. That said, I would certainly consider using Mahogany in the future. I should add that Matt was easy to get a hold of and was on time for the appointment. He spent close to an hour with us.

Matt was very responsive and patient with my questions and concerns (this being my first remodel, I had a lot). He kept me informed about issues that came up and explained them well and gave me good advice on many aspects of the remodel. Workers were prompt, knowledgeable about their work, polite, trustworthy, and disposed of garbage promptly. Some unanticipated complications with the structure of my condo, but they handled everything like the pros they are. The finished kitchen is great. I have already referred them to friends, and will hire them for additional work needed in the future. [For price, wish I could give A-/B+. Initial bid very favorable of 4 I received, but not sure how much others would have gone up due to work scope change. Do not fault Matt for the added cost, decisions were always left up to me and the extra work was necessary.]

Matt was responsive to my questions, always returned my calls. I live in Florida and had to coordinate between my son, Matt and myself. The workers were polite, on time. A huge demolition job, disposed of the resulting garbage with no problems. Considering the big job, it was a fairly smooth experience. I had three other estimates, which were all lower, but when I looked at them again, it would have most likely cost about the same, considering the unknowns at the time of the estimates. The job needed to be done ASAP, and Mahogany Builders stepped in.
Description of Work: The bathroom was completely gutted, all walls and floor. New plumbing, electric, new sub-flooring, new walls, the ceiling was partly lowered to make it one height, the toilet bowl was partly recessed into the wall to give enough room for the door to open, built shower stall with ceramic tiles all the way up to the ceiling, new floor tiles, new fixtures, toilet, lights, vanity, mirror, etc. There were many obstacles involved, everything solved in a timely manner. Looks great and we are very pleased.

Excellent. After dealing with many different contractors, Matt & Mahogany were an amazing sup rise. They were totally on the ball and are excellent craftsmen - their work far, far exceeded what I even envisioned. They pushed themselves harder than I ever would have expected. Always on time and there when they say they will be. Provided excellent ''consulting'' as well and were an immense help in the big picture of the project. Their small, talented & dedicated team worked like it was their own home they were working on. Excellent project progress breakdowns provided weekly along with invoices. More contractors should follow their lead in how they conduct business. I would not hesitate to use them again in the future.
Description of Work: Rehab/conversion of attic into master bed and closet, bathroom & shower, rec-room type area. Added recessed doors and tucked away storage space in kneewalls, replaced stairway and added custom woodwork detail. Replaced/moved old plumbing as needed, painted new space. Installed new doors and hardware including custom cut vented door for heater. Essentially transformed totally raw attic space into completely updated new construction w/new drywall, hardwood floors etc.
