Excellent. Could not have gone better.
Description of Work: Excellent from start to finish. Background: After a flood in our basement cost us more than $3,000 in damages, my husband and I decided to pursue flood control in our newly purchased home. Since my husband works during the day, I was charged with fielding estimates from over five plumbers/sewer specialists. Keep in mind that I'm a pregnant blond woman, with a house in the Gold Coast (most contractors see dollar signs posted on my forehead). Although I may appear to be oblivious when it comes to construction and plumbing matters, I never tell any of the guys giving me estimates that I've managed construction projects in NYC with budgets topping $300 million for some of the wealthiest people in the world... (This is how I weed out the dishonest creeps.) Estimates from other companies that ranged from $8k - $35k (the latter from a dishonest creep). Shawn Madden came to my house for the estimate (his father started the company many years back, and you can tell that he takes pride in his family business, and is a genuine, nice guy). Unlike the other plumbers/contractors, he looked into everything; he looked at both of my neighbors' yards to determine if they had flood control, he looked at and into our drains, our sump pump, our catch basin, and even into the sewer line running into the street. He suggested installing a flood control system, and also lowering the drain near our basement back door a few inches for extra protection. He gave me an estimate on the spot of $6500 for the flood control, and $1800 for the drain work (they modified three drains). Overall, Madden's suggestions seemed the most sound. In addition, if you're like me, and you have intuition about people, good people, that is, you go with the person who seems the most honest. That was Shawn Madden, hands down. Madden was able to start our job ASAP. The entire process took a few days, and each day, the crew showed up on time, and worked hard. Each and every person who worked for us on Madden's team was kind, professional, and kept the work areas spotless each time they left for the day. Another big plus for me was that none of the workers smoked, so I didn't have to fumigate the area once they left. The job was finished on time, before any further rain storms had a chance to ruin our basement again. The price was exactly what Shawn quoted me to begin with, and there were no surprises along the way. Best of all, as many of you know, Chicago just experienced record rainfall this past month, and my basement is bone-dry! Finally, to top it all off, Shawn was able to get the City to resolve the pipe problem in the street, at the City's cost (one of the contractors told me that this would be impossible to do, and would cost me about $15,000), but Madden got the job done with no cost to me. Take it from a well-versed New Yorker with high standards and even higher expectations: Madden Sewer is top shelf.
