I would absolutely use JC & Son Masonry again because they are absolute craftsmen. We knew we had structural problems with sections of the garage and though we had several bids from other so-called masonry experts, none identified the problems and their recommended services would not have fixed the problem -- just covered up the cracks. After dismantling the crumbling area, they discovered that the wood lintel was rotted. Though this was not part of the original bid and is actually outside their area of service, they identified another service provider who came in right away and replaced the lintel for a reasonable fee. There was only a minor delay in completing the project. We have an older brick home and they worked very hard at matching the mortar for the tuckpointing and did an excellent job. The work created quite a mess and they took great care to contain the dust and debris and cleaned up each day. This work was part of a much larger project and they were the bright spot in the whole project.
Description of Work: Replaced the lintel, rebuilt brick front and corner stones, tuckpointed several walls and sealed cracks in cement masonry.

Greg Cwik from JC & Son Masonry was always very professional, responsive, and diligent. He was easy to work with and very fair. His quotes were always reasonable, and he was dedicated to compeleting the job with excellence to detail. I would definitely use them again, and highly recommend them.
Description of Work: I needed tuckpointing for my stone facade, a new stone replaced on my stone porch, and a stone walkway installed at the foot of my front stairs. I also had the stone cleaned and sealed.

.C. & Son masonry is very professional but almost twice as expensive when comparing to the other wonderful company that we hired. We received an estimate for the following work. Dismantle retaining walls. Keep the existing stone for outer walls. Rebuild inner walls with new 4? CMU. Upon new rebuilding, reinstall existing limestone copings.

10/2013: The work was on a 100 year old 9 unit condo. They are very professional. I think they are also quite intelligent. Of all the bids we received, they were the most responsive to our needs. They broke the project down very clearly by the different services we requested and priced each element separately. Their crew showed up on time everyday for about 2 weeks including Saturdays. They were extremely hard working and very conscientious. There were a few fairly large areas of disintegrating common brick and mortar. They found old bricks that matched the existing 100 year old walls very well. Grinding out the old mortar was really dirty work. The did a good job cleaning up after themselves every day. In the finished brick areas, they were really careful to make sure the colored mortar matched the old mortar. The mortar in the finished brick area was quite narrow and they were careful not to grind the bricks along with the mortar. They reduced the height of the building's old common boiler's chimney by about 8 feet. They took care of the finished bricks which might be used for future projects. They pointed out lintels and I-beams that were badly in need of replacement as well as some which we have to keep an eye on for future deterioration. They replaced the really bad ones. The final bill was their original bid. 10/2014: JC & Son replaced some concrete and sealed the alley/building seam. We are planning to have four brick planters rebuilt this year and all of the association assume that JC & Son will be doing the work.
Description of Work: 2013: Tuckpointing, remove brick chimney, replace lintels. 2014: Repaired some concrete and sealed one side of the building.

JC and Son determined that the issue was likely from another source unrelated to their work. This assessment proved to in fact be the situation. Despite this, they did not charge for the assessment visit. Also, before the alternate problem was validated, they had said they would stand behind their work if issues were found to exist. Just what one would want in a service provider.

The assessment and service itself went well. It took longer than expected, however, to get the work scheduled despite the urgent nature of the situation (leaking) and the fact that the delay was not disclosed before a commitment to use them was provided on my part. In sum, they seemed to have no problem finding the time to make the sale but lots of difficultly finding the time to deliver. They either need to add staff or do a better job of being honest with clients upfront about timing and setting appropriate expectations.

JC and Sons has worked on our building multiple times, as well as the building next door. Their work seemed OK, they were hard to communicate with, but their work was "affordable" so our condo association regularly used them. About a year ago, I opened my kitchen window blinds to see a worker from JC and Sons (working next door) urinating on the windows between my kitchen and living space. Full genitalia. When confronted, the workers denied it, the owner may deny it here on angies list, but he admitted it on my voicemail: https://soundcloud.com/user159998419/jcandsonspee Picture: http://imgur.com/KImjYxC

This report is in accurate, We have not worked with this person, he was simply an angry neighbor which kept halting our operation on almost daily basis. While intoxicated he kept insulting all of our crew members with racial slurs and also made threats. Over the weekend he vandalized our scaffolding and damaged the salvaged brick. This confrontation ended up in multiple Police calls with finally his arrest on charges of battery, trespassing, damage of personal property and disturbing the peace. At the end we decided not to press any charges and waste any more energy on this. For more details on this incident please call us at (773) 744-6994.

We chose JC Sons b/c they were very responsive during the estimation process. They arrived to our appointment on time, provided a quote in a timely manner and quickly answered all of our questions we had before we awarded the job. The cost of their estimate was in line with all of the others we received. However after we awarded them the job, communicating with them was frustrating. I would contact them weekly to see roughly when our job would be scheduled. All I wanted was a "week of XYZ". We needed the masonry work done first, and then had additional interior work to schedule after. Each week I heard "roughly 3 weeks from now". After a few weeks of hearing the same thing (but never a date) I got angry and pushed for a week when work could expect to begin. Then that week when work was supposed to start came and went with no contact from the company. I contacted my contact and got an out of office message. My contact was not in the office therefore no crews were working. I understand that things come up and jobs need to be rescheduled but we should have been notified before that our job was going to be pushed back a week. But we were told nothing. It was very frustrating. So work begins on our building. I knew something was being done b/c I saw things happening, but no one on the crew checked in to provide a status of what was done each day or what was left to do. The crew would leave without any notice and never told me when they were coming back. I just figured they would be back since they left their equipment. I asked one day what was left to do any got some blank stares. Not sure if it was a language barrier or what. The only reason I knew they were finished with the job was they took all of their scaffolding equipment. No one on the crew told anyone in the building they were done with all the work or came to collect the remaining payment. (I ended up putting that in the mail) Seeing that I'm not a mason, I can only hope work was done as it was specified in our estimate. Only time will tell I suppose.
Description of Work: For 6 flat condo building: Spot grind and tuck point cracks/holes of washed out mortar joints Partially seal front wall Removed & capped old crumbling chimney Spot grind out and tuck point of any cracks, holes of severely washed out mortar joints Spot grind out and tuck point of any cracks, holes of severely washed out mortar joints

Greg came out late fall 2013 and did a preliminary round of spreading plastic cement over suspect surfaces, but could not complete the caulking operation because the weather was too cold. He came back, as promised, once the weather improved sufficiently (late Feb.) to do the caulking job. We've had a bunch of heavy rainfall with strong winds out of the northeast (the most troublesome), and his repair job stood the test. So after years of applying a tarp to the whole area, we now have a leak-proof roof and airshaft.
Description of Work: We've had a long standing problem with a leak in our roof. We knew it was coming from the area around the masonry over the airshaft, but all previous attempts at remedying the problem had been unsuccessful.

Our service person said he would be out between 9-930 and didn't show until 10:30. He didn't call me to let me know he was going to be late. I called 10 min after 930 to see if he had forgotten. When he showed and took all the measurements. This was Thur before the Labor Day weekend. I called the company on Tuesday after the long weekend and left a message asking when I should expect to receive the estimate so I can compare and make my call. He called back and left me a message that he was absolutely get it to me, if not Tuesday night then early Wednesday morning. It's Wednesday at 2pm and I haven't received anything. I called and he said he's too busy with all the calls he receive that he hasn't had the time to finish it. I am glad your small company is doing well and kept busy. But maybe you shouldn't promise what you can't deliver? Also try to be professional when you are running late. A call to your customer who's expecting you would be nice.

I disagree about this opinion, [removed member name] initially called to help and try to identify the leak issue, we've set an estimate time for 9-9:30 and I mentioned that I have 2 appointments prior this one and that I would call if running late, my appointment prior this one took longer than expected (its hard for us estimators to know how much time each estimate will take because it varies on the specific building's issues, some appointments take 15 min and some 2 hours). I finished my prior estimate at around 9:40am and literally as I was walking back to my car I answered [removed member name]'s call and to be completely honest I knew it was past our time frame and the first thing I mentioned was my apologies about the delay and that I just finished my estimate so obviously I did not even get a chance to call [removed member name] about the delay, during our conversation I also asked whether it was still ok for me to come by or if [removed member name] would like to re-schedule and [removed member name] said she understands and that its completely fine and that I should come by. During our inspection I tried to be helpful and I explained every possible situation why she might be getting leaks, then we had brief conversation about the scheduling and how busy we are so I mentioned that lately there has been an unusual surge of estimate requests and that it will take me few business days to generate our estimate. Additionally I explained her that we are in the peak of the season and that every construction company is becoming super busy. I was supposed to finish her estimate on Wednesday morning but early that morning I found that I needed to be in the field on one of our job sites, at around noon that day [removed member name] had called and angrily demanded our free estimate as I explained that I needed to attend some filed work and that I did not end up at our office Wednesday morning no matter how apologetic I was she seemed ignorant of the fact that I needed to take time attending our project. We are smaller family owned business with total of 3 crews, we don’t subcontract and we spend majority of our time with the owners of the current project, that’s why people like our work because we are on site and pay attention to our projects. I strongly disagree with the lowest grade that [removed member name] has provided and I hope she can find a contractor that will work perfectly with her schedule.

Everything was done, even some stuff Greg just noticed that morning. Everything was cleaned up and looks great. Would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: I contacted JC & Son through Angie's Concierge Service. I wanted an evaluation of whether I needed any masonry repairs because of the harsh winter. Greg got in touch with me and came out to check things out. I pointed out a few concerns and he pointed out stuff I hadn't even noticed (cracks around window and door frames). He sent an estimate by email and since they were rated highly by Angie's List I sent in a deposit. Then we had weeks of rain storms delaying the work. Finally I got on the schedule for a Friday to get a call from Greg that their current job had run late; could they come Saturday? They came and finished up everything by about 3:30.

Chose JC & Son out of 7 providers. Though price was a bit higher than the median, I liked their assessment of the project and Greg seemed like a professional guy and was very response to questions and had no problem coming out a second time to update the quote. Additionally, they gave me a quote on cement pouring, something which the majority of masons I spoke with would not do. When they were able to start the job, there was always a crew there by 8am starting work. A couple days were lost due to weather, but they estimated it would take about 5 or 6 days of work and I believe they finished on the 6th day. The tuck pointing looks great. They restored the entire length of one wall, about 6 or 7 courses up from ground level, and it looks great as well. Cement in front looks great, joints on the porch were grinded out and mortared, it looks like new. Guys were courteous, cleaned up well every day, not just at the end of the day, but constantly, and they were respectful of our property, as well as the neighbors. The job started later than I would have liked due to weather and their job before mine was taking a little longer than expected, so my project was not 100% completed (didn't get sealer on). This is my only issue, the late start, but I wasn't charged for work not done and they chose to not seal in the better interest of the job, as the sealer may not have adhered or set properly in the cold weather, so I appreciate that. I much prefer a company who makes sure something is done properly, not just "done". Overall, satisfied with the job and will have them out to finish sealing this spring, as well as start another restoration project. A good job by a professional operation.

Greg came out in July to provide a quote on masonry work. We decided to hold off on the work. However, in November, we took the mantle off our brick fireplace and broke one of the bricks. I called Greg and he still had pictures from the quote back in July and was able to provide a quote on repairing the fireplace (luckily we had a spare brick). The mason and Greg's brother came out and were very meticulous when removing the broken brick to not break other bricks. They also relayed a few bricks that had become lose. And they did some minor tuckpointing in the fireplace (apparently missed when it was tuckpointed a few years ago by someone else). Very pleased with their work and would definitely hire them for future masonry work.

Greg came by to assess a leaking door frame. We had a contractor come out to try to fix this problem 5 or 6 months ago, but was unsuccessful. Greg was very polite and knowledgeable, and after speaking with me while thoroughly investigating our building, he identified the source of our leak which turned out to be related to the door/frame of the unit above us. Since the required fix did not have anything to do with the masonry, Greg suggested a do-it-yourself fix that may potentially save us thousands of dollars. Although we did not hire JC & Son to perform the work (since it is outside of their scope of services), I will definitely call them back in the future for any masonry related work due to their professionalism, knowledge and honesty.

Mr. (member name removed) contacted several companies through Angie's List messaging center and we were the only company that replied. Mr. (member name removed) also provided detailed description of the work with all the measurements and 2 pictures, the project itself was minor. All the signs indicated that Mr. (member name removed) wanted to receive a quote with the information provided and he did not mention anything about scheduling an appointment. I personally prefer in person estimates but this is not the first time a potential customer requested a quote online with information provided similar to Mr. (member name removed) 's request. I simply misunderstood his intention but I did reply with our quote to Mr. (member name removed) on the same day of his initial request and as always I offered to answer any questions in regarding to our proposal but he never replied with any questions. Mr. (member name removed) also mentioned our quote was outrageous and I disagree, the scope of work was to remove 60lb heater from small basement window and then brick up the opening with proper wall ties and interior basement plastic enclosure to control the dust. He also claims that other companies that he received a quote from (not through Angie's List) quoted the work for more than 3 times less than our quote. This would mean that other quotes were at around $280 for this project, different companies have different overhead cost therefore quotes between companies do vary a lot but $280 for this project is unbelievably great deal. Lastly, Mr. (member name removed) 's final claim of us being lazy and unprofessional couldn't be farther from the truth.

We were having water coming in during storms. After installing a new roof didn't solve the problem, we realized the limestone caps that sat on top of our house were absorbing water and it was running down the interior walls. We had several masons come and give estimates, but we decided on JC and Sons after speaking with Greg. They were a pleasure to work with and required minimal supervision. We had to wait 3 weeks before they had an opening, but it was totally worth it. They were on time, professional, and did a great job. They removed the limestone caps, installed a proper flashing with metal edges, and reinstalled the caps with rope drains. Then they tuck pointed the interior wall on the roof. The mortar was applied evenly and looks very neat. They took their time to make sure everything lined up correctly. I appreciate their attention to detail. After they had reinstalled the caps, they sprayed with a sealer. There is no way water will ever get in again! They cleaned up everyday before they left and made sure I was satisfied before they left. I will highly recommend them to anyone.

Calling Greg Cwik in was a great decision. The contractor who installed the dryer vent had not been able to determine why there was water coming into the basement. Greg analyzed the problem very quickly and offered an explanation that we had never considered. After he sealed the wall, I set a hose on it for 30 minutes and no water came in. Before the sealing, water would come in within 5 minutes of turning on the hose. I will definitely call JC and Son again for any masonry work.
Description of Work: I was getting water in my basement after heavy storms. Greg Cwik came to the house, carefully analyzed where water could be getting in. He recommended a silicon seal on one wall where a new dryer vent had been installed. This solved the leakage problem. He then did some tuckpointing and sealing on the north wall of the house.

I have not yet contracted them to do the work because we are currently in litigation with the original masonry company and the GC, but when the case is resolved our first call will be to JC and Son to complete the work. I'm certain from their professionalism that the work will be completed right.
Description of Work: Replace a 3 story stairtower which had been improperly built.
