I selected and contacted three companies for estimates. J&L Contractors Services was the first company. After meeting with the two other contractors, I decided to go with Jack. I contacted Jack by phone and set up a time for him to come out. He arrived promptly. I was extremely impressed with his knowledge and professionalism. He explained how his crew would break up the sidewalks, how far down they would dig out and provide gravel for the areas to allow us to continue using the walks while awaiting the pouring of the concrete. Once I commissioned his company, we discussed the date the work would begin. Unfortunately, there was a lot of rain during the week, but Jack called with an explanation for the delay. He set another date to begin breaking out existing sidewalk and as promised, his men were here. It took longer than the timeframe provided because of weather conditions, but the job was completed and thus far I am satisfied. Several days after completion of the job, Jack called to inquire about my satisification and to answer any questions I might have. Jack provided answers I had in regards to the care of the new side-walks and I expressed my satisification with his work. One thing that impressed me the most with dealing with this company was the fact that no money was paid until after completion of the job. This in and of itself was a big plus.
Description of Work: Broke out existing concrete sidewalk from city side-walk all the way to front porch and at service door of the garage Laid out gravel and compact in all sections. Pour new cocrete sidewalks with broom finich pitching the concrete so the water drains away from building. Cleaned up and hauled away debris.

My chimneys were actually leaking water into my attic space. Jack displayed superior construction knowledge and professionalism from the first contact. Responded to my phone call promptly and made appt, and was always on time. He recommended attempting to repair the east chimney concrete cap that was partly cracked, rather than replacing, explaining carefully why, and exactly what he would do and thus saving $500 in additional costs. Because rain was threatening within the next 3 to 4 days, he began work a day later to prevent any more leaking, after calling me first and confirming that his starting the job quickly was not going to interfere with me. No subcontracting - either he himself or his employee did all the work. He was very fast and efficient. The stainless steel caps had to be special ordered, and he returned about 5 days after the other work was done and installed them. First class workmanship throughout the process. All new mortar was carefully tinted with color to match the old. He did a beautiful job. His formal invoice was detailed, accurate and very professional. I mailed him his check for the $1260.00. Then to my surprise, 6 weeks later, called me to inquire if all the leaks were stopped, and if I was completely satisfied with the result. First time in my life a contractor has ever called me after the job completion to see if I was totally satisfied with the result. (I have dealt with many contractors in my life) Jack's bid was not the highest or lowest, but came in about 25% higher than the lowest, and at about 1/2 of the highest. In the final assessment, his final cost was the most economical in terms of the time spent and the exceptional high quality of the work. Excellent repair job. I will definitely use him again in the future and highly recommend him to others.
Description of Work: Masonry work on two chimneys: East Chimney: Ground out all loose mortar joints from cap to roofline, and tuckpointed 100% from cap to roofline. Chipped all loose seal material from concrete cap. Ground down two cracks and tuckpointed them, filled all voids. Applied new acrylic seal on the concrete cap, and applied roof cement seal around clay liners for better seal. Installed new stainless steel caps and screens on two flues. West chimney: Removed old antennas, tuckpointed chimney 100% from top to roofline. Replaced old concrete cap with new concrete cap, installed new stainless steel cap and screen over round clay liner. Cleaned up property and removed all old debris. Total job about 2 and a half days.

I called JL contractor services for a quote. Jack came by, was very professional, and offered up some options. I got a quote within a couple of days, and we went ahead. He did the flashing first, which went smoothly, and looked great. We waited till it warmed up a bit to do the brick work. The tuck pointing looked perfect. It matched the original. And the corner of the house where the bricks were replaced looked like it would last another 130 years. I liked Jack - he was easy to talk to, did great work, at a reasonable price.

Overall, I was very pleased with Jack's crew. Jack was very responsive (especially in comparison to the other estimates I received), the estimate was less then the other 2 companies I contacted, the work was done professionally and very quickly. In addition, the roof had quite a bit of rotting wood, but Jack said it was all covered by his initial estimate. The crew did an excellent job cleaning up after themselves and the roof looks great. I waited a bit in regards to this review to ensure we had no leaks during the winter, but so far so good!

The whole experience was perfect from beginning to end with JL. Jack came out to see the building-he was on time and prepared with samples, colors, etc. I received an estimate from him via e-mail a day or two later and his price was affordable, not ridiculously high as others I received were. The job was scheduled to be started in about 2 weeks and was supposed to take 2 weeks. Kris and Konner( hope I spelled their names right)showed up to work on time every day. They worked their butt's off even when the weather was rainy, snowy, or cold every day til the job was done. They were clean and professional at all times. Every day I had neighbors stop by and compliment the job being done. All work was done and finished on time as promised. Jack was available whenever I called and I had no problems communicating with Kris or Konner as they did speak English. I would use them again in a heartbeat.

He did a lot of work for me this summer. He is very responsive. When he replaced my roof he covered my driveway, my neighbors lawn and put boards in front of my neighbors windows to make sure nothing was damaged. The only thing I didn't like was that they were throwing the rolls of asphalt on top of my roof. I was so impressed that I had them put on new gutters too. Their clean up was amazing. It only took 1 or 2 days to do the roof. He re-did my garage as well with the roof, siding and gutters with down spouts. The only thing I didn't like about the garage is when they did the siding they used the wrong size nails and had to come back out and cut the nails down. He also did my sidewalk. They did a nice job on it. I would recommend him.

We had expected them to get to the job sooner, but they had a lot of work to do before they got to my job. They did have to remove several extra layers that we were not planning on. They did give me a complete estimate, where other companies gave me an open end bid. As far can tell the work was done well and I have not have any problems since. Even when he pushed the starting date back he kept me in loop of communication. The clean up was thorough. I felt that Jack was extremely helpful and was a good communicator.
Description of Work: I hired them to remove our old roof and put a new one on. They had to repair some areas of sub-roofing and do some tuck pointing.

I called Jack for an estimate and his workers came out that evening to assess the situation. He stopped by later on to give me an estimate for a chimney leak and an estimate for a complete tear off and re-roof. Jack was very forthcoming about our options. We decided to go with the complete tear off and re-roof. We received 3 estimates for this work and Jack's was the most reasonable. Jack scheduled the work for the following month as he was very busy. The work was started on time and completed within 2 days. The workers were very professional and cleaned up after themselves. He also coordinated with the stucco company. Overall we were very happy with the results.

They teared all of the existing shingles, roof and all of the rotted wood on the facade. They rebuilt the areas they had to remove and installed the new roof and shingles. They did a very good job on the roofing part of this job. They also installed gutters and downspouts. They didn't seem to care at all how the downspouts looked. They came straight down from the front of the porch and were strapped on to the wrought iron with something that looked temporary. When the work was done it was dark outside and I couldn't check things out very closely. The following weekend when I was painting I noticed two 5 inch holes at the bottom of the gable part of the roof. I called Jack to let him know about the problem with holes and that I didn't like the downspout placement. He sent someone out a few days later to cover the holes but told me the downspouts where best left where they were. They cut some wood to fit the hole using only a circular saw and got it to fit pretty well. They then used only a nail gun to attach it. The fist piece was a pretty good fit and was attached solidly. I inspected that fix and it looked good. They then worked on the second hole and left when they were done. When I went to paint it the next day the second hole was patched with a piece that didn't fit very well and had 6 nails through it but only one of the nails was connecting with anything. I was able to pull the piece out with my hand. I ended up having to redo the patch myself. The roofing part of the job was done very well. The carpentry part of the work and the placement of the downspouts were very poor. I had to reconfigure the downspouts so they ran against the house like all of the other downspouts in the neighborhood.
Description of Work: Roofing work on the Front porch 1. Tear all roofing material to wood deck and remove rotted crown corner boards off the fascia. 2. Replace all rotted wood on the roofs deck and replace rotted fascia boards. 3. Install 15 lbs roofing felt. 4. Install Ice and water barrier on the edge of the roof. 5. Install 25 year manufacturer warranty 3-tab shingles Ico traditional color Gray. 6. Install new gutters and downspouts. 7. Install new aluminum wall flashings. 8. Clean the property and haul away debris with dumpster.

Response from J L CONTRACTOR SERVICES
THE PORCH TURNED OUT TO BE IN TERRIBLE SHAPE AFTER THE TEAR OFF. ALL ROOFING DECK AND THE STRUCTURAL JOISTS WERE ROTTED SO BAD THAT ROOFERS DID EVERYTHING THEY COULD TO SAVE THE PORCH WITHOUT ANY EXTRA CARPENTRY EXPENSE. IN OTHER WORDS, IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN STRUCTURALLY REPLACED. THE OWNERS WERE ON THE BUDGET SO WE FIXED IT AS BEST AS POSSIBLE. GUTTERS ON THE OTHER HAND HAVEN'T BEEN INSTALLED PREVIOUSLY ON THAT PORCH AND THE SHAPE OF THE PORCH WAS DIFFERENT THAN OTHER PORCHES IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. IT WAS CONFUSING WHERE TO INSTALL THE DOWNSPOUTS BECAUSE OWNERS WERE AFRAID AT THAT TIME THAT WATER WOULD RUN TO THEIR NEIGHBORS YARDS AND FLOOD THEM.

After I signed the estimate, Jack called to say they would schedule the work in a few weeks. I was fine with that, however 2 weeks later I receive a call at work at 7:30 a.m. from one of his workmen saying they were going to start that day. I was completely unprepared for that. I explained I would need to let the elderly tenant know that they would be coming and give them access to the yard as there are locked gates on both sides. I told them I needed more notice and not to start. I called Jack and we arranged another date. The workmen showed up on time and got to work. They finished in two days, cleaned up and did a beautiful job.

We were impressed with Jack's explanation of how he would do the work. Of 3 companies from whom we obtained estimates, he offered high quality at the best price. He returned calls promptly and did the work as scheduled in our 2 1/2 car garage. After the old floor was removed, gravel and wire mesh was laid and the new concrete poured 5" thick. He cleaned up and removed debris.

We had a roof leak and did not know where it was coming from since the roof was new. Jack came out right away, knowing that it is a small job. He voluntarily patched the crack around the plumbing pipe, called to give us the report of what he did and asked us to drop $30.00 in the mail. He was polite, respectful, patient, prompt and successfully fixed the problem. We will definitely work with this company in the future! We need more people like Jack! Thank You Panie Jacku!

This was merely an opportunity for them to look at our roof and see if they could figure out where the water was coming in and then give us an estimate. Once Jack arrived at our home, he found a few areas that he thought were the problem. One just needed some caulk to fill gaps in the existing flashing, the other one was a shingle that wasn't installed properly that was leaving a gap to allow water underneath. He was at our home for an hour repairing the two small issues, but wouldn't take any money. He finally let me give him $30 to cover the cost of his gas! It rained pretty heavily the following day, and I'm happy to say that our walls and basement remained dry. We had another company come out to look at the problem and they wanted to replace the flashing (which Jack said looked fine and properly installed) as well as replace our 4" gutter with a 6" one. Their estimate was a hefty $2500. Needless to say, JL Contractors are the more honest company. We still need to have some tuckpointing done and this will be the company we call to do the job.

Jack is an extremely hard worker. He put in very long hours in order to finish our roof and our chimney. When he put the vinyl siding on our house, his workers did the work, but he oversaw it and made sure that it was done correctly. When we wanted something to be changed, he had his workers do it immediately, with no questions asked. He was the one who told us about Angie's list as a good source for our other homeowner problems.

The work was well done. When the internal structure of the wall to be taken down was found to have more problems than originally anticipated, the contractor came up with a solution to allow the work to continue safely without any large increase in cost.
Description of Work: The major project was the demolition and rebuilding of the parapet walls on our condominium building. In addition, we had some broken copings replaced and out main chimney tuckpointed from the roof up to it's top. The other three bids that we had ranged between $49,000 and $93,000. It took a crew that varied between two and six men about seven weeks to complete.

We just moved into our house a month ago and we were told upon our home inspection that our garage roof would need to be replaced and was "no longer functioning as intended." We found that out after a few days of rain. I called Jack for an estimate on a Monday and he came out the same day. He gave us a quote and swatches that day as well. The next Monday he and his crew were here for the job. They tore off and re-roofed the garage in one day. The were EXTREMELY neat. Nothing was shoved over the sides of the garage into my yard or my neighbor's yards. They carried everything over to the alley side of the garage and threw it into the truck. The garage looks great! I gave my neighbor their card. I will definitely be calling Jack for future exterior home repair.
Description of Work: Re-roof a 2.5 car garage and checked for damaged wood beams.
