Initially when I got the ring back the ruby was wobbly in it's setting. Took it back and thought that all was ok. Last week I discovered that my stone had fallen out. I'm heart broken. Will contact this company that seems to me from their comments of another dissatisfied customer that they were not at fault. Again the typical American way of not taking responsibility. I would never recommend these people. Stay away in order to avoid the heartbreak I'm going through now.

The craftsmanship was incredible, as was the service and the turnaround time. The ring had to be made smaller, and looking at it you wouldn't know that it had been altered at all. Henry is a master.
Description of Work: We inherited an engagement ring that I used to propose to my now-fiancee, and needed it re-sized. Given the age of the ring, we also had the settings checked as well.

One of our hand-made wedding bands (made 39 years ago, accidentally fell in the toilet and could not be retrieved. We feared that we would be unable to have it duplicated. Henry Ruzyc assured us that he could duplicate it and really clean up the ring we had. We were delighted to see duplicated ring which looks as good as the original. We were also most pleased with Mr. Ruzyc made us a spare ring should we loose one in the future!

I found HR Jewelers on Angie's list with a slew of A ratings. Even though its a ways from my home, because of the easy access, about 20 feet from the Madison Wabash L Stop, I decided to go there. What a find. The proprietor immediately convinces you of his knowledge and expertise with his old world charm. You just quickly trust this guy and know he's going to do a good job. He told me the stone was not in fact loose, but that the prongs were worn and should be built up again. I've had the ring about 40 years. He told me the work would take about a week but it was in fact done in 3 business days and it looks like new. Plus he gave me a 10 year guarantee against stone loss. I thought the price was reasonable for the quality, professionalism and promptness of the service. Mr. Ruzyc is a delight to deal with. Unqualified A provider.

When I picked up the ring I was amazed and very happy with the look and workmanship of the piece. He did a stellar job and I was very happy. I now wear the ring on my left pinky alongside my wedding band and the two complement each other beautifully.
Description of Work: I found an old silver band with good thickness to it that I purchased about 17 years ago. Didn't wear it much at the time but becoming reacquainted with it I felt it needed something more. I had several stones laying around and chose a star ruby cabochon, two small rubies marquise cut and a round faceted yellow sapphire. Mr. Ruzyk worked with me to determine the best placement on the ring for the stones and I left it with him for two weeks.

Took the trip downtown to see HR Jewelers due to great reviews on Angie's List. I was shopping for an engagement ring, but was surprised to see maybe 5 examples of rings in a very small display case. When I asked about the diamond, the owner (I presume) pulled out one diamond and said it was "very nice". The diamond certificate was hand-written and not a GIA or ASP certified certificate, which I've learned is a must since jewelers typically upgrade their own diamonds. For such a major purchase, I decided to do more research and ultimately ended up buying online through Blue Nile - much better experience. For an engagement ring, I would suggest focusing on the cut of the diamond (ideal cut is a must), get the GIA certificate, then feed the diamond proportions into an HCA calculator (easily found online) to find a great stone. Yes, it's some work, but totally worth it.

I have a unique, modern ring with two half-carat diamonds set in an unusual way--not with the usual prongs. One of the diamonds fell out. As the original jewelry store we purchased the ring from was no more, I chose H.R Jewelers based on the reviews on Angie's list to repair my ring. The owner gave me a quote of $100, which seemed fair based on the unusual design. He did an excellent job--the ring looks like new. However, he said he'd had to use a lot more gold than he thought, and now asked for $160. He seems honest, and I didn't think he was trying to scam me--in fact, he was apologetic and said I didn't have to pay more than the original $100 if I didn't want to. I agreed to pay him $150, but I was a little disappointed. He also checked out my engagement ring to make sure it was secure, and noticed that my diamond had a chip! I would never have known. He gave me a good price to repair that, but I think I will go another way as he would have to send the diamond out to be recut, and that makes me nervous. I would return for another repair, however, becasue he does a good job.

the work was done beautfiully. He stayed open for me on a Saturday to pick it up. Unfortunately, one month later the blue topaz I gave him to set in the ring (he purchased the 14 K gold head piece for this ring and set it, so it should have fit appropriately and I've never had a gemstone fall out of a ring), fell out and is lost. I was so sad....paid $450 for this hand-cut blue topaz, shipped from Australia from an award-winning gem cutter. I paid another $200 to Henri for the gold head for the ring and to set it and for naught. All I have left is an empty ring--with the head and the four prongs still intact. I guess I would not recommend him...sorry. Maybe that was not the right head for that sized stone or it should have had some glue on it. There were four prongs on the head and none of them broke. I just don't know why a gemstone would fall out of a ring, since I've never had that happen in my 50 years here on earth. So, I had it replaced with another topaz (another $400 from gem cutter) and another jeweler reset the topaz. A year later, that topaz was wiggly in setting, so paid again to have it reset. That's three times in two years I've paid to have this topaz set. Apparently, gem setting is an art no one has mastered.I'm guessing H&R chose the wrong setting originally for such a big stone, and it's not enough prongs or a big enough head for the size of the stone.
Description of Work: Henry ordered a 14K gold mount for my blue topaz and soldered it to a ring I supplied. He also repaired an earring that no one could repair (a blue/green aquamarine that had fallen out of a fragile setting)

This was an incredibly positive experience--we made an appointment for Saturday and Henry met with us, sketched out what he thought would compliment my engagement ring, and showed it to me. He also showed us other pieces that he had made, which were utterly beautiful--my husband and I knew that we were in good hands. We liked what he had drawn, he weighed out the gold we had brought, and we agreed that he would use for my ring the diamonds and gold from the pieces that I had brought in, and keep the rest in trade for his labor. As it turned out, I was going to be out of town on the date that I was originally scheduled to pick up my ring, but I called Henry and he said that he could have it ready for me 3 days earlier. I picked up my ring this afternoon and, as a testament to this jeweler's integrity and honesty, he actually had money for me from the gold that I had brought in to trade. This ring is beautiful. You do not see artistry and craftsmanship like this anymore--Henry is truly an artist in the purest sense of the word. It perfectly matches and enhances my engagement ring, and I am so happy with what he has done. I would recommend HR Jewelers to anyone who appreciates beautiful craftsmanship and honest work. I definitely plan on returning to Henry for all of my jewelry needs.
Description of Work: I went to HR Jewelers after reading the glowing reviews of Henry's work on this site and on Yelp. My husband and I were looking for a wedding band that would match the 1920s-era engagement ring that I wear, and we went to Henry Ruzyc (the "HR" in HR Jewelers) to have him make a ring for me. I brought to Henry several pieces of gold jewelry that I have no use for, and he took them in trade.

I brought in several pieces (at least 20) that needed to be fixed. Sophia, the name of the employee, is very sweet & nice. I think her specialty is designing rings; a few customers were in there designing rings while I was there. It was a little pricey, but appropriate for the quality of the work; outstanding workmanship. One of the watches needed a new lens over the watch face, which was replaced beautifully. The etching on the inside is all distorted now, but the jeweler told me that’s how I brought it in. I don’t think it was that bad, and if it was, I would’ve inquired about this in the beginning. I don’t even want to wear the watch now since it’s so distorted. When I asked her how much it would be to fix, she said that they don’t repair that; they’d have to ship it out which would cost at least $150. However, all of the other pieces were fixed beautifully. She practically restored a ring that my father had, which I didn’t know could be restored that beautifully. Some jewelry that I brought in was my mom’s and she brought me to tears at how beautiful she had restored these items. She accepted a coupon. Overall, the experience was good, minus the watch distortion. I would take my jewelry there except for my watches.

I called HR after finding them in the Chicago Magazine and on Angie's list. They also had a rave review on yelp. I have a antique engagement ring and wedding ring, both from the 1920s. I have had my ring services 3 times by a jeweler and all three times have been costly and they ended by hurting the integrity/beauty of the ring. I left a message with Zofia at HR, and she called me back the next business day to set up an apointment. She was very honest about her schedule, and apologized that she couldn't see me until the following week. we scheduled an appointment over my lunch break and we had a wonderful talk about work needed on my ring. She went through everythign in detail, gave me estimates, and then we chose what to do at this time and what to do at a later time. I also got to see their collection of antiques and reproductions, they are amazing! They do all the work in their shop, so my ring was done in 5 days!!! before i would wait a month to get it back. It looks amazing!!! she did everything that she quoted and the price was exactly what she told me. They even took the angie's list coupon when i went to pick up my ring. All in all, i am so happy I found HR and I know i can take it back there. This is the place to go if you are looking for an antique or need a repair from someone who knows and cares about antiques!

They don't give receipts or written warranties. So when an item is not repaired properly (ie: diamonds falling out of the setting) they blame the customer. The worst situation was that I paid them over $2600 total to refurbish and waterproof a solid gold vintage Cartier watch with real movement. I wore it in the water one time and the watch was immediately damaged due to water infiltration. This occurred within six months of the original refurbishment / work. I took the watch to them to repair it, they said they would fix it under the warranty. When I went to get the watch they presented me with a bill for $550. They did not stand by their workmanship, blamed me, and I was forced to pay an additional $550 to get my watch back. I will now take the watch to a reputable watch repair shop on Wabash that specializes in Cartier watches to make sure the watch was properly repaired and water proofed. Do not use them! They are totally dishonest and do not stand by their workmanship!!! What is shocking is that I gave them over $5,000 of business in the past year and a half, I was one of their best customers. If they will do this to me, they will do this to anyone!

My boyfriend's Eddie Bauer watch had been dead for quite a while. I took it to Macy's to see how much it would cost to replace the battery. It was $12 or $13 to "just" replace the battery but if I "wanted to make sure the waterproofing still worked" it would cost $39 and they would water test it. Considering the watch was only about $70 to begin with, $39 seemed like an awful lot. I guess it is just a rubber gasket that the person needs to be careful with in order to preserve the waterproofing when they replace the battery, so I thought I should perhaps go to a professional who does this for a living not to some person who was working up in bridal registry the week before. So I got the name from Angie's List and went on my lunch hour. It was great! They are on the 10th floor of the maller building (5 S. Wabash) around the corner from the elevators. They welcomed me in and performed the services immediately. It took less than 5 minutes. It cost only $8. The only thing you need to be aware of is that they will only take cash for this sort of thing, but there are ATMs in the area so if you are without cash as I was you can easily go get some.

Zophia and Henry are genuine, reputable and reliable. I have always enjoyed my visits to their shop - it hardly seems like an errand. They did beautiful, beautiful work on my grandmother's antique broach, which I was restoring as a gift for my mother's 60th birthday. Later, when I took in a pocket watch my grandfather had won during his days as a professional bowler, they were honest with me about its monetary value, which ultimately saved us the expense of restoring it to working order. I wouldn't have gone anywhere else to have our wedding bands made. A friend did the unique designs for my husband and me, and HR Jewelers helped me go through many family pieces I had inherited to find a quality stone that suited the ring and brought some family history into the modern ring being made. Zophia met with my friend to offer insight and advice during the design process, and HR Jewelers even purchased some of the gold we had that we knew we would never wear - money were were able to put toward our new rings. Our rings are prefect - they're unique, they're well-crafted and I know they will always be well cared for when it comes to cleaning and repairs. I feel lucky to have found a jeweler I can trust and whom I enjoy doing business with.
Description of Work: We have had quite a lot of work done for us by Zophia and Henry with HR Jewelers. I initially found them on Angie's List when seeking a reputable jeweler to clean an antique gold/diamond/sapphire broach with a watch in it. Since then, they have appraised dozens of pieces of jewelry for us, given us an honest assessment of an antique watch (beyond its sentimental value, it was not worth very much), purchased gold from us and even made our wedding rings based on a friend's design. I would never take my jewelry or watches anywhere else.

I had thought my engagement ring would need a new head, but Zofia said that it only needed repair. She was able to give me the estimate (both cost and timing) when I brought the jewelry in. My watch needed a battery and band and they were able to match the band perfectly. My husband's watch had been very damaged by another jeweler who attempted to close the watch after changing the battery. The crystal was destroyed and the watchworks were not functioning. This watch has a curved case and crystal. They were able to repair everything and even called me with a question regarding the band before they proceeded. However, the crystal also has a black border around the inside and my husband realized after I brought it back home that they made it slightly wider than it should be, so it obscurs (slightly) some of the dots that represent numbers. Because this is a minor problem, I'm still happy with the repairs.
Description of Work: Took in my engagement ring and a pair of earrings (all needing repair and cleaning). Also took my husband's watch, which needed a crystal, repair and band; and my watch, which needed a band and battery.

I took my rings and necklace in on Friday at lunch time. Zofia checked my settings on the spot. She identified a potential issue with one of the baguettes and offered to repair it but suggested that it did not need to be fixed just yet, I should just keep an eye on it. I was fully expecting that I would have to leave my precious belongings with her for a week or two (as I have done in the past at the jeweler my hubby bought my rings) but was pleasantly surprised to hear that my rings and necklace would be done by the end of the day! She explained that she hates to keep women and their wedding rings apart for too long. Unable to come back that night, I told Zofia that I could pick them up on Saturday, if she was open-she was. I left without asking how much the cleaning/repairs would cost and fretted about it all night. Saturday morning Zofia called me to say everything was ready and I was pleasantly surprised to learn my bill was only $100! My ring looks beautiful! I cant take my eyes off of it. Zofia is awesome! Super friendly and customer focused.
Description of Work: My white gold engagement and wedding rings were in dire need of a cleaning, setting check and "dip". I also needed my husband's white gold chain repaired as the clasp had been broken off.
