+ 3 moreHomewise is owned and operated by Mirek. He is an honest guy and I am really happy I found him on Angie's list for our remodel job. I have already recommended him to two of my friends. I only give him a B overall because there were a few mistakes with the work, but as you can see, I have given him the highest marks for everything else. If there was an A- option, I would have given that grade. Mirek's price was very competitive. Not the lowest, but also not the most expensive. He was willing to work within our budget ($20k). Our agreement was that we would provide the materials and he would do the work. All in all, we likely spent only $27k on the remodel, so our supply cost was about $10 (that includes kitchen cabinets from ikea, new appliances, and all the fixtures for bathrooms, kitchen, etc). The quality of the work is very good. His crew hung our cabinets with precision and care, and the tiles are all installed beautifully. However, in the process of installing one of the bathroom vanities, his crew mistaken drilled into the front of the cabinet (it was hard to tell what was front vs. the back). also, there is a noticeable bump in the kitchen countertop from a screw that was drilled/screwed in too far into the counter. And when his crew were opening the cabinet doors, a few of the doors were scratched from the knife blade used to open the cardboard box. Like I said - minor issues that did not spoil my overall satisfaction with the work done. Homewise advertises as a straightforward, no-nonsense company. That is exactly what we got. Because this was our first ever remodel, we were a little unaware of certain little things like installing the water line for the fridge (Mirek asked us at the initial consultation, but in our naivety, we said no) Also understanding what kind of appliances we would need/want. We did a lot of things last minute. My only recommendation for any future customers is to try and plan ahead and ask more questions so you don't get stuck trying to do things at the last minute like we did (because we were supplying our own materials).
Description of Work: Demo and remodel of kitchen and 1.5 bathrooms. Converted the half bath into full bath by installing shower stall.

+ 8 moreWe were very happy with the quality of work and attention to detail. The project went smoothly and we paid exactly what we agreed to on the quote. We especially liked that the guys were willing to do minor things that weren't in the original quote like adding handles that we purchased to the bedroom closet doors when we realized that we didn't have the right tool to do that ourselves. It took one of the guys just a few minutes to do this task but other companies likely would have wanted to charge for something little like that. The painting was meticulous and the brickwork looks so good that you can't even tell it's a patch. I appreciated that in the process of getting a quote, Mirek suggested things that we hadn't thought about to keep the price reasonable such as getting sliding windows rather than awning windows since they are less expensive. He also thought about things like whether or not there was insulation behind the paneling. (There wasn't, and this is something we would have noticed in the demolition and want to add so I'm glad he thought about it ahead of time.) We will definitely look to them next time we have a remodeling project.
Description of Work: Homewise remodeled two rooms in our house. Both rooms are part of an addition that was built in the 1950's. In the downstairs family room Mirek's crew removed the old tile ceiling, the "fast food restaurant" red tile, built in cabinet and desk, non-functioning gas potbelly stove, original closet door, and wood paneling. They installed a ceiling with recessed lights, foam insulation, drywall, tile, and closet door. (The carpet on the main area of the floor was installed by another company.) The Homewise crew also bricked over the area in our exterior brick where the old gas stove vented. The upstairs bedroom did not have any ductwork and it was originally heated by a wall unit heater. (That heater was no longer working.) It also had original awning windows that didn't close all the way. Mirek referred us to another company that he works with to do run ductwork up to the second floor bedroom and install zoned heating so that our heater could handle the increased load. The Homewise crew installed new windows and an attic access panel. The also repaired the drywall where the heater was removed and boxed in the new ductwork. Finally, the crew painted both rooms--walls and trim.

When the y needed to stay late to complete a task, they were very respectful of our time and always asked permission before working beyond the scheduled time. I appreciated their wiliness to stay late and work hard to complete the remodeling. They are a great group of people to work with and will work with them again as well as recommend them to others.

+ -1 moreEverything was done with attention to detail, and to the highest standards. Homewise is great to work with. In a year or two, we will be moving out. We plan to hire Homewise to come in and replace all of our lighting, our closet fixtures, and paint the entire condo. We haven't decided yet if we will replace our flooring, but if we do, we will hire them for that as well.
Description of Work: We chose Homewise Remodelers to do complete make-overs of two bathrooms and our kitchen. We looked at 3 contractors from Angie’s list. The one who came in the cheapest, was also the one who took the fewest measurements, an NO pictures! The one who was the most expensive was trying to push me to go very upscale for all my remodeling. We don’t live in a luxury building, and we didn’t want luxury finishes. We wanted it to look really nice, and be done on a reasonable budget. Homewise took lots of pictures, took lots of measurements, had great suggestions, and their estimate was in the middle. We chose them. Mirek, the contractor was great! He had excellent suggestions. I wanted to paint my kitchen cabinets and put on new hardware (to minimize expense, and maximize my budget). Mirek talked me into new cabinets, and he was absolutely right! My new cabinets MAKE my kitchen. Mirek brought cabinet samples to my home, along with granite and quartz samples. So, it was easy to walk around my kitchen and look at the samples in the various lighting to see how they would look in the room. I am SO glad I got the cabinets, and Mirek made it so easy. The cabinets were VERY reasonably priced and are of very good quality. I was also able to look at the quartz samples in my bathrooms (we decided on quartz rather than granite). It’s very helpful to have the samples brought to your home to make this important decision, and Mirek had plenty to choose from. (Mirek doesn’t sell the quartz/granite, but he has a relationship with someone who does). Mario, our main “artisan” was truly an artist. He took such pride in everything he did! His tile work is gorgeous! He is a “Jack of all trades”, and a master of all! He and Mirek also worked around problems with creativity and patience. For instance, in one of my bathrooms, I wanted to take out the tub and put in a stand-up shower with glass doors. After removing the tub, we discovered an odd placement of a pipe which seemed to preclude putting in the shower floor pan. The pipe supplied water to the units above me, and could not be moved. Mario and Mirek put their heads together and came up with a solution. They put in a concrete frame to raise the floor pan just a couple of inches, so that the pan could be put in without disturbing the plumbing. They also worked around problems with my medicine cabinets. I bought ones which could be recessed or wall mounted, but I wanted them recessed. They could not be, again, because of odd placement of pipes which supplied water to units above me. Since they couldn’t be recessed, the lighting I bought to go above them, weren’t going to stick out far enough from the wall to supply light to the mirrors. So, Mario built soffits over the cabinets. When the lights were mounted on the soffits, they looked great, and supplied the light to the mirrors appropriately. Mario put down floor coverings to protect our wood floors outside the bathrooms and kitchen, and cleaned up nicely every day. Most days he put in a little extra time. He was also willing to pick up supplies (toilets, tiling, etc.) at local stores. His attitude and flexibility were wonderful. Their plumbing and electrical work were flawless. I cannot say enough about how great their work was, how well they managed problems, and how nice Mario and Mirek were to deal with. They came in on time, on budget, and did beautiful work. You cannot go wrong with Homewise.

+ 2 moreMirek was in the midst of moving and the initial estimate took roughly 2 weeks to receive, for which he apologized. Eventually we realized we needed to reduce the scope of the project due to budgetary concerns. In asking for a revised quote, I asked if the items could be separated out and the hours and cost separately listed for items such as electrical, plumbing, etc. When I received his final estimate, he wrote me that "unfortunately we have a different way of estimating jobs like this one, therefore I could not provide a breakdown form." The reduction in price was not substantial and since there was no breakdown in either of his quotes, it was impossible to judge its accuracy or fairness.

+ 4 moreOverall, this was a very positive experience working with Mirec and Homewise builders. We provided a concept/design and assumed the responsibility of providing all the fixtures, hardware, appliances, cabinetry, flooring, paint, and lighting. Homewise provided everything else. We worked very closely with Mirec up front to ensure our design was possible and within our budget. The project consisted mainly of demolishing a 50 year old kitchen and bathroom and remodeling them. The original project estimate was 6-8 weeks, and the project officially ended at 7 weeks. There were very few surprises during the demolition and construction, with the exception of needing to move a overflow tank related to our radiant heating system. This was handled promptly and reasonably from a budget standpoint. We were fortunate enough to be very available during the entire project - checking in almost daily on the project, so any issues or questions were resolved quickly. When issues arose concerning materials we were providing, Mirec and his team were very flexible and accomodating. Whenever we would point out something we weren't happy with, or felt needed to change, they were always quick to respond with "We'll take care of it", and they did.We also can't say enough about the quality of work and attention to detail. The craftsmanship was very good and all of Mirec's team seemed very competent. This was our first experience as first time home owners with a contractor for a major project, and we have to say that it probably couldn't have gone any better, with the exception of it getting done faster :) We developed a very good working relationship with Mirec, who is very personable and forthcoming, and this helped tremendously to give us confidence in Homewise. He was always available to answer questions, and extremely knowledgeable in helping us achieve our dream kitchen and bathroom. Throughout the course of the project, there were things that came up that they could have glossed over, or compromised on quality-wise, and each time their primary focus was doing it right. For this reason, we can't recommend Homewise enough.

+ 4 moreI appreciated that the Homewise crew was punctual on a daily basis and consistently worked hard until the project was completed. The most annoying part was the dust and mess which is a necessary part of renovations, unfortunately. I was present to oversee every aspect of the project and the crew was open and receptive to my questions, concerns, and requests for changes. They attempted to accommodate me as much as possible, eg. hooking up my stove most evenings so that I could cook vs. going to restaurants for dinner. I was also pleased that the price that was agreed on in the contract was the actual price that I paid upon its completion. There were no surprises and I was very happy with the outcome. It was easy talking with Miro to begin the process and he provided oversight of his crew's work throughout the reno to completion. I plan in the future to remodel my bathrooms, and will definitely call on Homewise again.

+ 7 moreThey did an excellent job. During the initial project meeting, Miro presented very realistic cost numbers and suggesionts. They protected surrounding areas, cleaned up an the end of each day including the common area (condo)--sensitive to living in a construction zone. Arrived on time, very professional and courteous team with meticulous detail. The shower stone tile has a beveled edge, which took much more time and skill to install. Beautifully done. Old vintage building--had to reinforce the floor. Matched the molding with the vintage molding and also matched the stain. Project took longer than planned; however completely understood why and kept informed throughout. Miro understands the definition of professionalism and customer service. So pleased referred others, who had reached out to Miro as well. We will be repeat clients.

+ -1 moreWe had Homewise remodel our 80 year-old bathroom, and at first, we knew we needed it changed, but didn't have a very clear idea of what we wanted done. They helped guide us, but were also flexible (when possible) about making some modifications as our vision became clearer. They were very good about letting us know their work schedule and showing up when they said they would, and also great about keeping everything as clean as possible. They also responded to an emergency situation before the work was scheduled to begin and helped us out with a couple of other incidentals along the way for reasonable fees. Very importantly, when we had some minor issues after the work was done and the bill had been paid, they immediately came out and addressed our concerns. We anticipate needing more work done in the next couple of years and will certainly be contacting Homewise Remodelers, Inc. again!

+ 0 moreMet Miro back in October to get an estimate on my bathroom. He was very professional and showed up on time. The most important aspect of his presentation is that he "listened" to what I wanted instead of "telling" me what I wanted!! The contract spelled out everything that was going to be done, line by line. I agreed to have the work done and made my initial deposit. The work was too start on Dec. 23rd. Mario & Andy showed up right on time to start the work. They were very professional and friendly. They answered all of my questions and even made some valuable suggestions based on their experience which I greatly appreciated. The cleanup was done on a daily basis. Tarps were picked up and all debris removed before they left. Throughout the remodel, I periodically checked on the quality of their work.....It was EXCELLENT!!! It was so good that I talked to Miro about replacing my kitchen floor with new tile. Both projects were completed in 8 days. Right on schedule!! The final inspection only revealed one small issue. One of my threshold was higher than originally installed. Miro agreed and had Andy stop by in a week to make the necessary adjustment. Very responsive. Overall, my experience with Homewise Remodelers has been excellent. There were no surprises with regards to extra costs. The value / price was very good. I would not hesitate to recommend them to my family and friends. I am planning on having Miro tackle my upstairs bathroom in the fall.

+ 1 morePeter and Rudy showed up on time to the minute, took 2 hours to remove old cabinets and counters. They covered openings with plastic and covered all the floors with drop cloths. Prepped everything for the next day to install cabinets. They were on time the next day to install the cabinets and did an excellent job on installation. They also upgraded all the outlets. The quartz counters were installed 2 days later and Peter came back to do all the connect and moldings. he did a great job, and any questions I asked was happy to answer with full details. He was great!

+ 0 moreMiro was the second of three estimates that I received and with the Angie's List it became the most affordable. I am one who believes that you get what you pay for so I was a little wary to go with the cheapest estimate although it was most budget friendly. However, I liked Miro instantly and his presentation was excellent. He brought with him pictures of his work and an entire folder that included pages of references all over the city, copies of his Angie's List awards, copies of his "no complaint" certificates from the BBB, information about how to select a contractor, etc. I wanted to do the design myself and I was looking for someone to do the labor but I also wanted someone with design expertise to give me feedback on the reality of my design and during our conversation I was clear that Miro would be able to do that. He got back to me within the time that he stated with an estimate and verified that the time frame I was hoping to have the work done could be accomplished. Once I agreed to work with Homewise, Miro came back out we set up the contract and moved forward. His team was on time every day and very CLEAN. I had been warned that complete guts and remodels could be dusty but they were not at all. They sealed off the bathroom door with plastic and kept the door closed during the gut -- they also placed plastic in the area of my basement that was directly under the bathroom to catch in dust that fell. This is my only bathroom so I needed to have access to my toilet when they were done at the end of every day and they cleaned the bathroom at the end of every work day so that I could access my toilet in a clean bathroom. Miro was out of the country while they did the work and once again I got a little nervous about having the owner away in case I needed something but he reassured me that the foreman, Mario, would be responsive and that he could be accessible by email. My worries were for naught. Mario was great. They finished in the time frame they promised and the result is beautiful I hope to one day remodel my kitchen and I will absolutely be using Homewise. Just a side note: I had a plumbing problem that led to a flood in my bathroom which led to my decision to remodel my bathroom. The plumbers left a hole in the wall outside of my bathroom about 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide. Homewise repaired it completely and primed it for me to paint at absolutely minimal cost - this was a nice bonus!

+ 0 moreHomewise Remodelers, Inc were great, very attentive and got back to us quickly. We didn't end up using them, but they were good. I started off by looking for some contractors online for Chicago and as soon as I put the request by email, they got back to me almost immediately, I set up an appointment for them to come and look at the unit where the work was to be done and they came promptly. Everything about them went well.
Description of Work: We got a quote from Homewise Remodelers, Inc for kitchen remodeling along with some window installation.

I was able to readily communicate with the contactor whenever I had any questions or concerns. Contractor and workers provided feedback throughout construction on ways to improve project.
Description of Work: 19th century apartment unit needed major renovation. Services performed: total gutting of bathroom, kitchen, and living room; new electic; raising of ceiling; new drywall; painting; new bathroom and kitchen cabinets; insulation; ceramic floor in bathroom; laminate flooring of kitchen and living room; granite countertops in kitchen; hook up for washer and dryer; lighting fixtures installed; new exterior steel door; and electic base board heating throughout.
