As indicated above, the experience was highly unsatisfactory; there was very poor communication and I was forced to miss some important business meetings because of their failure to return calls and set appointments. It took 4 days from my initial call to get the hot water heater and at the end of an additional 6 days I can't do washes. I will never use them again.
Description of Work: We called for service since we weren't getting hot water on a Saturday; someone came out and charged us $90 to light the pilot light and said we might need a new water heater; the pilot light went out again within minutes; we called back and asked to have a new one put in ASAP--were told we would have a call early Monday--though I called in repeatedly, the call didn't come until Monday 4 PM. They finally came on Tuesday at about 1--meaning I missed an important meeting. They did the installation but when I tried the faucets later, half didn't work; more calls and then Thursday evening someone came and said they hadn't flushed the system so all the faucet filters were blocked. They fixed that but when I tried to do washes on Saturday, the cold water to the washing machine didn't work. Finally got someone on Sunday who worked on the filter (which was blocked) but then discovered the cold water on that line still didn't work. It is right next to the valves for the hot water heater and they must have broken it as I did washes hours before they installed the hot water heater. I was told I would receive a call early Monday to get the repair. Once again, no call; when I called in at 10 AM they refused to fix the problem. While the on call service men and the operators were courteous, the management was not

Excellent service. Our hot water heater went out on a Saturday night. We called Heatmasters first thing Sunday morning and the technician arrived within an hour. He was professional and knowledgeable. He cleaned and repaired a sensor and cleaned the tubing on our pressure switch. We have small kids and also needed to get to work on Monday morning, so getting our repair completed so quickly on a Sunday was great. We would definitely recommend Heatmasters.

They came to do the job. The a/c wouldn't turn on. An inspector from Chicago came in and said they incorrectly set the electrical wiring, it was not in code. The inspector said as well, this was such a serious issue, that a fire could occur. I called Heatmasters back and they said they didn't want to come fix it because the inspector didn't know what he was talking about. I then hired an electrician, who confirmed of the incorrect wiring, and fixed the issue. He stated how unbelieveable of an unacceptable job they did. I tried to contact Heatmasters to pay the electricians, but no response. They were very nasty with me and very unprofessional. I was out of pocket a lot of money. The unit has froze up. We have found units with no filters. For a brand new system, it was not working correctly. They denied my warranty. I tried to have them come check on it after almost a year, and they said they would not service my building. This is upsetting because I have used Heatmasters for many years. They are nothing like they used to be.

We made an appointment with a sales person to come to our home and give us an estimate. He was very prompt and discussed our needs with us. For several weeks after that I phoned him many times with questions and he was very patient and helpful. We obtained other estimates but decided to use Heatmasters as they had been servicing our equipment for years and have done a good job for us. The installers showed up promptly on the designated day. They worked hard, finished the job, cleaned up, and then showed us everything they installed and how to use it. It was a very good experience.

The customer never called to inform us that his humidifier did not work after the installation. After three years we got the phone call. We quoted $89 to come out and to diagnose what the problem is. Heatmasters warranty's everything that we sell. If we would have been informed within the first year that it was not working it would have been rectified immediately. The customer was not quoted $235 to look at it. He was quoted 89 to diagnose the problem.

The service person still charged me for the "repair"! To make matters worse till this day they still call me at least twice a year to schedule a furnace check-up even after I firmly told the person how I would never use Heatmasters again.
Description of Work: Heatmasters came to a condo I rent to investigate an central A/C until that stopped working. I was told I needed to purchase a new one for over $600. A year later the same problem occurred - no cold air from the A/C. When the service person came we figured out it was a circuit breaker that had tripped and probably didn't need the $600.

Please see above on what service was performed.
Description of Work: had a leak on the gas control valve on the boiler and also a leak on the gas shut off valve on the hot water tank. Heatmasters technician came to the house on time but when he got here he called the office for a price to replace the gas control valve on the boiler. He said it was $525.00. I asked about the parts vs. labor costs and he seemed irritated by the question. He called the office and told them that I wanted to know the breakdown. His estimator told him "it's a set price and we don't break down parts and labor and told him to leave and not do the job. The hot water tank gas shut off valve, they wanted $600 to replace a $10 part. I found these people to be extremely unprofessional. When a repair person comes to our home I expect to get a breakdown on parts and labor to which I am entitiled vs. being treated as if I have no right to ask the question and take it or leave it. Thanks but no thanks Heatmasters.

Heatmasters has always done flat rate pricing to insure that our customers know what they are paying upfront. This allows customers to know what they will pay for their repair, and then they can decide if they want to proceed. . We have found that by doing flat rate pricing we can guarantee to our customers that they will only have to pay what we quote. The advantage for Member in this case was that he knew what he had to pay and chose not to have us do the work. It is unfortunate that he did not see the benefits of this approach and chose to send in a negative review on us.

The overall experience was very disappointing. I am a repeat customer (and 3 year Service Contract holder) with Heatmasters and they do my annual boiler cleaning each fall. Something happened to the level of quality and customer service this past year and they have greatly slipped. It took them 4 total trips to complete the task. The pricing they charged was about 40% higher than their competitors pricing. Initially I scheduled my annual cleaning with 1.5 weeks advance notice. I told them about a leaking water level sight glass and that something seemed to stick in the low water cutoff valve. My initial appointment was from 12-4pm. At 4:30pm I still didn't hear anything from them so I called and was told the tech was coming out shortly. He arrived 5pm. After diagnosing the problem of the sight glass, he said he'd have to return to the shop and schedule another appt to install it. The new sight glass kit was very overpriced ($100 for a glass tube with 2 o-rings). He returned the next day and installed it. Next he diagnosed that my low water cutoff valve would have to be replaced ($720 - also overpriced since in 2005 another contractor had replaced the same part for $365). After the diagnosis he said he'd have to return to the shop and schedule another appt to install it. He returned 2 days later with a new low water cutoff valve. After arriving over 2 hours late, he installing the part and then he did a quick cleaning of the boiler burner manifolds. The previous tech removed the manifolds, cleaned each one thoroughly, and installed a new thermocouple. This level of cleaning was not done. I witnessed the entire process. Three days later I discovered a leak on one of the fittings for the newly installed valve. I contacted Heatmasters, expressed my disappointment, and they sent someone out to fix the leak. He arrived that evening and fixed the problem fitting.Basically it took 4 appointments to perform this straightforward task. The next day (Friday) I contacted their service dept and asked to speak to the Service Manager about the situation. I had to leave my name and cell number. He never called back. That evening I went to their website and left an on-line message about my disappointing service. Several hours later I received a call from one of their owners. He was very apologetic and said I would receive a call from the Service Manager on Monday. I never received any calls. At the COB Tuesday again left an on-line message and have yet to receive any response. I am very disappointed with the poor service and high prices.
Description of Work: I have a steam boiler type heating system. The low water cutoff valve was sticking so that the water feed valve was overfilling the boiler tank. The water sight glass also had bad seals so I was not able to use it to check the water level in the tank. The low water cutoff valve and sight glass was replaced. Once completed a brief cleaning was performed on the gas burner manifolds.

When the initial service call was booked, there was no mention of the sight glass. After the service tech got there he noticed that it was leaking and he could not see in it. We do not stock these parts on the truck due to how fragile the glass is. Once that was replaced he could see that the water level in the boiler was not high enough due to the low water cut off sticking. After replacing the low water cut off the boiler was operating normally. There was a slight leak in one of the unions that was taken care of for the customer. The service mmanager did call back the customer early in the week and left a message for the home owner without getting a phone call back.

Heatmasters was recommended to me by my house inspector when I bought the house, and I signed multi-year service contracts with them on the strength of the recommendation. In the beginning the service was good, but in the last few years there has been a noticeable decline, which is evident when you compare the Angie's list reviews from years ago vs. more recent reviews. For example, in my recent maintenance service the technician did not bother to check whether the units were working properly nor did he offered to change air filters. These used to be, and should be, part of the maintenance service. Whereas some of the technicians are very good (e.g. Mike), others are not as well trained or thorough. Three years ago one of my A/C units (over twenty years old) needed to be replaced according to Heatmasters, and I put in the top unit recommended by Heatmasters. It was supposed to be much stronger than the old one it replaced, and therefore it seemed odd to me that the new A/C did not pull as strong a cooling effect as the old one. Nevertheless Heatmasters said the gauges tells them it was working and there was no problem. However, in three years it had to be repaired multiple times, each time costing hundreds of dollars. First the compressor was leaking and a "miracle" sealant was applied. Then the entire gasket assembly outside of the house leading to the condenser/compressor had to be replaced because of leaks. This year the evaporator coil had to be replaced because of leaks. It seems clear to me that when the A/C was replaced it was not done correctly, and therefore there have been so many problems, which really should not occur with a new A/C. So far Heastmasters has charged me more than $1000 for these repairs stemming from the poor installation. I still have a service contract with them, so I will continue to report on their services going forward.
Description of Work: My air conditioning unit was replaced upon the recommendation of Heatmasters three years ago. A brand new unit was put in at a cost of ~$4,000. From the beginning it didn't seem to work quite right as it was not as strong as the old unit it replaced, even though it was supposed to be much more powerful than the old one. Nevertheless Heatmasters deemed it acceptable, since it eventually cooled the space. In the last three years it has required several repairs, with Heatmasters charging me more than $1,000 to do these repairs. The most recent repair experience put me over the edge to write this review.

The problems were not caused by the installation. The problems were due to manufactuer failure. We have made every attempt to correct the problems as they have happened. The last issue was due to a leaking coil which we do not manufacture. We are very sorry that you have had issues with your system. When the system was sold it came with a one year labor warranty. The member was also given a discount on the labor rate which he was informed of before any work began. We are sorry for any inconvenience you hav had.

Will NEVER contact him again. How dare this man say our home is a rocky horror show when he has never seen it. I would not recommend this company and can't even imagine how rude he is in person.
Description of Work: We emailed Bob Rubin regarding some problems we were having with our radiators/heating system. Bob's response to our questions was BEYOND rude. Apparently he thinks we "our in it for ourselves." Not sure what the means, but yes we are emailing him for our own personal benefit. That benefit was to find someone we could trust with repairs to our home. This is his response to our email: Date: Mon, 21 Feb 2011 11:48:57 -0600 Subject: Re: Radiant Heat - Fwd: FW: Heatmasters--New: usa2083209, Lead Type: Sales From: rrubin@heatmasters.com Your assumption that old iron pipes are leaking are the cause of your having to bleed radiators all the time is simply wrong. Yes, I can repipe the house in Pex but that won't fix your problems. Either you're a PE, RA, know someone in HVAC or in it yourself. In any case the information [boiler, input, net, output, manifold pressure, water pressure, pump m/m, Extrol] is useless and the questions and solutions you pose won't, will not, may not work. If you want solutions, pick up the phone, call me and make an appointment. I need to see this rocky horror show if you want me to tell you how to fix it and make your home more comfortable for you and your family. Bob Rubin 773 413 6340

The estimator was about an hour late. I had to call them; they didn't call me. He spent very little time looking at the situation; barely looked at the existing boiler or the rather complicated piping related to this project. It's been over three weeks: no estimate as promised. No response to my email to the company. I would not consider using this company in the future. The company has responded to my request and has fired the employee that was the problem. I would consider using them in the future as a result to my concerns.

Sal was very helpful in showing me exactly what was causing the noise with our A/C unit, replacing the faulty capacitor quickly (he had one in his truck), and also explained how to change the filters and clean the unit outside. He also gave a ballpark estimate on what a solar attic fan would cost, and offered another solution for installing an additional a/c unit to cool down our attic. He was very polite and knowledgeable and answered all of my questions. The only issue i had was that my originally scheduled appointment got bumped for "emergency service calls." It was annoying because I had taken the afternoon off from work and got the call almost an hour after my appointment window.
Description of Work: I contacted Heatmasters to determine why our central A/C unit was making a lot of noise on startup, and requested a consultation on a solar attic fan. The tech replaced a faulty capacitor in the outside unit, changed the filter on the furnace, and provided some general advice on maintaining our a/c.

All was fine during the visit, it was only afterwards we had problems... Scheduled an appointment by phone, without a hitch. We were given a 5-hour time frame in which the technician would arrive the next day, and he arrived on-time within that window, calling first to tell us he was on the way. The tech was clean, friendly, and appeared knowledgeable. He went on the roof to check a couple AC units, then into each of the 3 apartments to clean and check the blowers and furnaces. Although all were already working fine, he recommended using AC-Renew, a condenser lubricant, in all 3 AC units, because he said they were all showing fairly high pressure under use and a couple were "running a little rough". My AC occasionally didn't "kick in" when it should, so it was hoped the AC-Renew would help. We figured anything that would extend the life and health of the AC units was a good investment, so at $109 a pop, he went ahead. He had taken the time to show me a good deal about the work he performed, and made good recommendations to us regarding the future use and maintenance of our appliances. However, some hours after he left that day, the 1st-floor owners said their AC was not working at all. The next day they called Heatmasters to have them come back and check it out, which they did. A different tech accompanied the original tech, and they said they found a loose thermostat wire outside by the condenser. They fixed it in about 5 minutes, and charged an additional $79. When we called the office to object to the additional service call, the lady said sometimes there will be loose connections that the inspector may not catch OR that the switch was not turned back on (on the unit outside) after the inspection was done. Right after she said that about the switch, she tried correcting herself. In any case, it was not until we reached the service manager and explained the situation, that the charge was finally reversed, without argument. A couple days later, the 1st floor owner found that condensed water from the AC blower inside the apartment was leaking water all over. Another call to Heatmasters, and it appears that the tech had neglected to reconnect the drainage hose. They came out to fix it. No charge, this time. And in the end, my AC unit still occasionally fails to "kick in" when it should, so the AC-Renew didn't help that situation at all. Sadly, though the original tech was friendly and helpful, the quality of the actual work done doesn't merit a repeat visit from this company.

I might have used them but now that I know that aggressive telemarketing calls with voicemails are part of the deal, I'll stick with other providers. I was called 4 times in one week. 3 voicemails were left and when she finally got me live I was so frustrated I really didn't want to hear about their 4th of July specials. If I were promised there would be no telemarketing calls I'd use them. If you choose to use them, ask if you can be taken off the list if you don't like that kind of marketing.
Description of Work: I called for a quote. They were fine. The price was reasonable. There was an Angie's list discount. They wanted to give me a 1/2 day window to wait for a repairman for a service call. I said I couldn't do that, they offered to schedule me first with an hour window. I thought that was great. I didn't end up using them. I found another solution. Its now 30 days later and I have received 4 very agressive telemarketing calls in one week for service specials.

We had a leak in the drainage of an upstairs a/c unit which was causing major water damage on the living spaces below. These guys quickly figured out the issue and remedied the problem quickly.

I originally called Heat Masters after our heat went out on a weekend this winter. They came that day, the technician spent about 2 minutes and saw that the igniter piece was cracked. No problem, fixed it right away, great - and charged me almost $300 ($140 to show up, $100 for the new part and another $50 or so for labor). Seemed steep, but my heat was working again so that's fine. A week later, our heat went out again. A new technician came out, spent another two minutes and saw that the flame sensor was dirty. He wiped it off, and then all was fine - but it cost me another $140 (to show up)! I was not happy, and tried to argue that if the first guy had done a proper "diagnosis" we wouldn't have had to call a second time. I was angry, but realized there was nothing he could do. So I called the service manager that week, and without blinking he offered to either refund half of the second bill, or send someone out to do a furnace cleaning for free. They came out last week and did a great job. So although I felt like I got ripped off after a couple visits within a week, I was very impressed with the way they addressed the situation. Service was ok, although I still think that the first technician could have done a more thorough diagnosis of the furnace. But I would use them again.
Description of Work: Triage on furnace; clean / check-up for furnace and A/C.
