Todd thoroughly inspected entire house for violations. He rewired minor items, and noted all other issues. My fears around the buyer's inspection were greatly calmed because Todd understood what I wanted, and there were no surprises.

Mr. Connaughton responded quickly to my e-mail request. He considered several solutions before deciding upon how to fix the problem. He explained the dangers of using an extension cord on this type of appliance after discovering the damage. He was flexible in arranging the work schedule, arrived on time, finished in the time he projected, and removed the detritus from the work. The air conditioner, which is 6 years old, continues to function, actually more quietly than before. I have asked Hardt to carry out several additional electrical repairs in near future.
Description of Work: I contacted Hardt because my window air conditioner suddenly stopped working due to its trip plug shutting it down. My home is a 1919 bungalow with hodgepodge wiring not updated in probably 40 years. Electrician Todd Connaughton examined the outlet, wiring, extension cord and air conditioner plug to determine why the AC had shut off. He determined that the extension cord used was at fault (in fact, arcing current had burned into the tines) and that a new outlet could be installed close to the AC despite a rather crowded space. He then installed said outlet which involved cutting through the wall and extending an outside conduit.

This is work done in our commercial space. It is a little hard to tell if Hardt is the entire challenge or if it is the building. But it has been a challenge to schedule someone to be at the space when needed when Hardt controls access to the wiring closet. The prices are very high. We installed 1 track light and 3 pendent lights and the bill was about $2,000 (no new light switch or breaker). Our latest quote is to install 4 outlets, move some ceiling lights in a drop ceiling (no drywall) for 2 offices and a conference room, and finally to relocate some exit signs. The quote is over $12,000.

Todd was professional, courteous, and prompt in completing the work. Per my request, he installed a bathroom exhaust fan on the same switch as the overhead shower light. He cut a small hole in the ceiling to locate an electrical feed that was already in place and proceeded to perfectly position install the fan so that no patching or painting of the ceiling is needed. After completing the work he thoroughly cleaned up everything. The experience was so pleasant that I asked Todd to return to do some additional electrical work.

Todd was great. Very knowledgable about what he was doing and explained the process each step of the way. I felt very confident that he was very honest as he informed me that our wiring was well done (another electrical company tried to tell me the entire house needed to be rewired for one outlet). He gave me an hourly qoute. when the work was done early he asked if there was anything else to look at as it was a flat rate for the first hour and he secured the old outlets and provided covers for where he had removed the lights free of charge since it fell within the hour. Our association is about to have tankless heaters installed in four of our units and we will be contacting him to do this as he showed himself to be very knowledgable, professional, on time and HONEST
Description of Work: I contacted Todd to have him inspect the current wiring in our home. An outlet was not working and I needed to have it wired and several mantal lamps taken out and the wires secured.

After working with so many mediocre contractors, it is a HUGE relief to work with an excellent trades person like Todd at Hardt Electric. Todd took the time to exchange several emails and calls with me as I tried to explain what the job was. And when my photos and descriptions weren't enough, he took time to drive by our home and look at the exterior part of the job order to give us a better estimate. When it came time to do the work he made helpful recommendations about adding outlets in a few places, but never "upsold" us on work we hadn't asked for. He took process photos of everything he did in case we need them for our records later. His labor estimate was accurate and he came in on the lower end of that. He was very upfront about costs from the first conversation we had, and there were no surprise extras. When it was time to total up the bill, he showed me an itemized list of all the materials we were paying for. He even helped us save money by recommending that we dig the trench ourselves rather than having to pay him his high hourly rate to do it. Communication with him was always prompt and easy, he showed up on time, talked me through his plan for the job and got right to work. He cleaned up after the job, left no spare parts or debris behind. Took care of little details like caulking around exterior outlets to get a tight water seal. Hardt Electric's rates may seem high but the work was done right and efficiently, so in the long run it's a better deal than someone cheaper who will work slowly or do shoddy work. We will definitely call Hardt Electric for future electrical work.

It was actually a non-business day for the company, but Todd took the time to speak with me about my problem. He asked a number of questions and made a few suggestions about how I was using the electric sockets in our kitchen. I followed his suggestions and it solved my entire problem. Todd called me on Monday to follow up. I did not need his services at this time, but I definitely will call him in the future when I do.

Todd did a great job, got most of my power restored, but due to the age of the house and the wires, there was some he was unable to recover without a rewire. He fixed what he could until I can save for the rest. I am please with his work and appreciate his patience.
Description of Work: Todd took the time and patience to search out the reason for the power outage on one side of my 100 year old house. He did not stop until he found the source and he did everything he could to restore the power. He also gave me a new outlet and breaker for my treadmill.

Todd was terrific. I was very concerned about a new ceiling electrical fixture. It had burned out and I was fearful that a bigger problem was lurking in my ceiling. He identified what was wrong and hung a new fixture. He was faced with some very old wiring in another part of the house, but made adjustments and got the second fixture installed. He has excellent expertise in old Chicago houses. He is returning to take care of another issue that I wouldn't trust to just anyone. Hire Todd at Hardt Electric with full confidence.

Electrician Todd from Hardt was great. The work I needed done was completed in a timely fashion and at the price that was estimated. Todd is very careful about the quality of his workmanship and is not satisfied unless you are. Unlike many workmen, he listens to his customer. I would not hesitate to use Hardt Electronics again.

Todd from Hardt had a list of projects needing to be taken care of in my 80 year old home. He was prompt (actually early pre 7:00 am) which accommodated my work schedule. We went over the list and I went off to work. He straightened out the "dangerous" mess in the wiring for the pendant lights and took pictures so I could see what the situation actually was. It took longer than he anticipated but, in my experience, that is usually the case with an 80 year old home. He did a quick fix to my ceiling fan that had been blowing through light bulbs and explained why this was probably happening. He then replaced two ancient 8 ft. non-functioning fluorescent light fixtures and one 4 ft. in the basement and a switch in the bathroom that just happened to go out the day before he was scheduled. There's a few more items that he needs to come back for and we have another day scheduled. Overall, I was thrilled with Todd's professionalism and communication, thrilled to have working lights, and thrilled to have a "forever" electrician to call on. Thanks Todd!!!

Took some time and talked with me on the phone about my needs. Asked questions, which is important, I don't like contractors who don't ask questions. Do they know everything? Showed up on time and got the work done in a reasonable amount of time. Hardt doesn't do estimates so know what you want cuz they're going right to work.

I'll get to the service itself in a minute, but first I need to tell you how my electrician Todd went above and beyond the call of duty. My husband was out of the country, and I had a completely flat tire on my car the day Todd came over to install my lighting. The spare tire was locked - and the key had broken off in the lock. I made calls all day but couldn't find a tow company willing/able to tow me to the tire store and I wasn't sure what else to do. After working all day to install my recessed lighting - including a trip to the hardware store for cans because the ones I had wouldn't fit - Todd came to my rescue. Not only was he able to get my spare unlocked, he also put it on my car for me, so my toddler and I could safely drive the car to the shop for repair. He even refused the tip I tried to offer him. Now THAT is service. Truly the world needs more people like Todd! As for my electrical, it was an especially challenging job, but Todd was able to work around all my old house's quirks. He was patient, kind to my son and dogs, and very good at explaining what he was doing. At the end of the day, it cost more than I had estimated, but I am 100% satisfied with the service and the result, so it was worth every penny. I wish I had done it years ago. And I'm glad I got Hardt and Todd to do it, because I'm not sure if anyone else would have been smart enough or persistent enough to complete the job this well. Sometimes you go with who's best not who's got the best coupon on Angie's List. I would definitely recommend (and did, on Facebook!) Hardt, especially if you have a quirky older home like mine. And I HIGHLY recommend Todd, for being an excellent electrician and an even better human being.
Description of Work: I had recessed can lighting added to my kitchen. Because my house is 120+ years old, and the kitchen is a converted porch, it was much more involved than anticipated. There were a LOT of surprises in the ceiling - beams running in every direction, wood blocking, and an older ceiling above it. But in the end Todd was able to make it work, which made it worth the cost.

I had a terrible experience. I had previously used an adapter to connect a grounded plug on a window air conditioner to a two prong outlet. The adapter had slightly melted to the plug during last summer?s heat wave. Connaughton came out and informed me that, because of the melted part of the plug, the current cord to the air conditioner would either need to be replaced at the source of its connection to the unit, or the whole a/c was otherwise irretrievably ruined and extremely dangerous and would have to be replaced. In trying to get off the plastic cover to the unit, he broke the plastic connections to the cover and then announced that the cord was hardwired to the unit and could not be replaced. He then changed out the two plug outlet for a three plug outlet for the next air conditioner I would have to buy, looked at a couple outlets and the outside wall of my building to see about rewiring the same outlet to a dedicated circuit, and told me the changing of the wiring would take 8-12 hours at $133 per hour. He just happened to be available that very Friday, and if I wanted to save money I could be his assistant. Before he left, he talked me into cutting the cord to the air conditioning unit which had previously been professionally installed. He cut the cord RIGHT NEXT to the unit instead of just above the plug. Here is what I was later told or learned in getting another estimate: 1. The melted plug could have been easily replaced and the air conditioner was just fine and it turned out it was not compromised at all by the melted plug. A new plug could have been permanently attached at the end of the cord had Connaughton not deliberately cut the cord RIGHT NEXT TO THE UNIT. I was told some appliances actually come with the plugs not attached when purchased, and electrical supply stores carry replacement plugs all the time. 2. No one could have said the air conditioner had been harmed by the melted plug without having conducted tests on the unit, which tests Connaughton had not performed. In fact the unit seemed to work just fine when we later tested it. 3. Anyone who knows even a little about small appliances would have known before even trying to open the unit cover that the cord would have been soldered to the unit, so there was no need at all to break the cover just to see how the cord was connected. He should have known that. As a consequence, I now have to buy and pay for the installation of a brand new air conditioner, when I could have just replaced the plug, and the unit would have worked just fine. So I not only paid for the destruction of the old unit, I now have to buy a new one.

Response from Hardt Electric Inc
i explained to the customer we did not repair appliances, but i would look into seeing if i could repair the plug that had melted, not slightly but to the point to where it could not be used safely, I also explained it was an old unit and that the cover was very brittle and could possibly crack, and he said he understood. I said the unit was hardwired which is another way of saying the connections were factory and that I could do more, also meaning soldered. The customer told me he was worried his tenant would plug the unit back in, and I told him that the only way to stop that was to cut the cord, which he agreed. I would have nut cut it for any other reason, I told him that it was a fire hazard and was dangerous. I looked into putting the outlet on a separate circuit and also typed out a proposal for him. I am sorry he was not happy with our service and never was given any indication of such, I go out of my way to make sure every customer is happy and was really surprised by this review.

Todd came in and did some truly fantastic work. He assessed what I asked for, inspected the current state of things, explained in easy English what was wrong and how he was going to fix it, and then got down to work. He did the work in the time he thought it would take. When Todd came over, I explained what we needed. After looking at the current set-up, he told me how my electrical box was woefully inadequate, and that the previous owner had double and triple tapped the circuits. In addition, the mast was not correctly mounted to the house, nor was it grounded. Todd gave an estimate of how much time would be needed to do all the work and parts needed, and I gave the go-ahead. He was spot-on for the hours required for the job. When he was done, he explained the work performed, and what I should do going forward. He cleaned up after himself, acted professionally while in my home, and didn't present any undue burden on us. He also recommended I contact the home inspector we used and call them out on the things he missed, as well as glossed over, and seek a refund. I only had two issues with Todd. First, twice he had to re-schedule when he would make it over to my house to perform the work. Finally we found a time and he was very prompt. The second issue was the estimation on price. He was hesitant on offering an estimate for the whole job, after he had assessed the situation. He didn't know what the price for parts would be until after it was done. There was some sticker shock when we did get the invoice, but it was not outside the realm of reasonable. Overall I am very impressed with Todd and the work he performed. I would not hesitate in recommending him to friends and associates who need electrical work done right. Since the work, we've not had any issues with circuits being tripped and we feel much safer knowing our electrical is safe.

Every time we would turn on our microwave while the oven was going the circuit would always blow. I finally decided to get someone out to correct the problem and to also install a new light fixture over the kitchen sink. I called Hardt Electric since it is close to my neighborhood. Todd Connaughton, the service tech was all booked up for at least two weeks but promised to give me a call if he had a cancelation. I was delighted when he contacted me just a few days later to advise that he could be there on Monday, June 2nd after his first job at 8:30 am. Todd showed up a little after 10am. After checking out the problem he explained why we were having the trouble we were with the microwave and oven and what he'd have to do to correct it. He explained how the company billed per hour and the approximate cost for the job which sounded very reasonable to me. I was expecting to pay a lot more. Years ago we had "a friend of a friend" rewire the house which I now know was a huge mistake. Todd completed the job in 5 hours. I have other electrical repairs that my home is in need of and will be sure to contact Hardt Electric again since I was extremely pleased with the service Todd provided. .

I believe I have found my new go-to electrician! Todd worked logically and methodically, determining that there were a series of issues in the nearly 100-year-old building. 1) The wall switch needed to be replaced. 2) The previous ceiling fan may have overheated and 3) The wiring in the J-box had also shorted-out. He was very practical, working with the situation at hand, completing a safe and professional installation. Todd clearly explained his reasoning and the issues with an older building like this. He was patient and courteous. I thought the charge for services was very reasonable---1-1/2 hours. The only challenge was getting this small job scheduled as the company has been very busy, however, it wasn't an emergency. I'm very satisfied with his work.
