decks, home inspection
+ 0 moreMy condo association received a notice of violation as the result of an "inspection" that must have been conducted from the alley. Decks are >10 yrs old. Given recent attention on porch safety in Chicago, we knew this was a serious and potentially expensive matter. After one daunting attempt to negotiate the Building Dept on our own, we turned to Haran Inspections and Jim Haran, a former building department official, to assist. Jim did an amazing job shepherding us through the process. Knowing the right people to talk to and speaking the same language, he saved us countless hours in line, on hold and bouncing around the bureaucracy. As it turned out, the violation was written in error and no repairs were necessary. I absolutely believe that Jim's familiarity with the Building Department, the building code and the permitting/inspection/hearing processes helped our condo association get the issue resolved quickly and avoid thousands of dollars in unnecessary "repairs."
Description of Work: Jim Haran assisted our condo association in resolving a City of Chicago building code violation related to our decks. Jim contacted the Building Department on our behalf to better understand the nature of the violation and to determine, with the inspection supervisor, the best/necessary course of action. He recommended several licensed contractors who could complete the repairs, and he represented the association at the initial administrative hearing where he secured a continuance and at the final hearing where the violation was non-suited. Throughout the process, he kept us informed and moving toward the next step. He would have secured the necessary building permits, but as it turned out, this was unnecessary.
