The quality of the workmanship is quite good. But the job seemed to drag on a while, and there were some big bumps along the way. Mike's supplier didn't order our new water heater in a timely manner, delaying the install for about ten days. Per my suggestion, Mike put in a "loaner" unit, as we'd just moved in and the existing unit was undersized with a less than safe, jerry-rigged install (NOT the work of Goode Plumbing!). Then, when our new unit did arrive, it was damaged. So Mike sent it back and asked that a replacement be sent, delaying the install _again_. Though Mike was pretty quick to respond to e-mails, there were some communication hiccoughs: occasionally, direct questions went unanswered which was a bummer, and some details were dropped. Such as, I would have liked the water heater to have been installed so that I could flush the unit and check the anode rod, and I expressed this to Mike early on, but the unit is hard-installed. I'm sorta OK with that only because the install (btw, all the work on our job was done by Mike's guy, Jeff, who couldn't have been more pleasant or professional) was was judged "excellent" by the water heater manufacturer's service unit. Why service on a brand new water heater? There was an issue with the new unit not lighting, which neither Jeff nor Mike could figure out. On Good Friday, with my in-laws in town, we had no hot water. Mike really put himself out to get a service call in from the manufacturer's rep. Mike also put my mother and father in law as well as my wife and me up in a hotel for the night, as we had no hot water and had all been working in the house all day and were dirty and chilly and tired and frustrated. A great and welcome gesture. Very cool of him. Eventually, the new unit was installed and the last loose ends tied up, though some weeks later (we started March 17; big stuff done in the first week of April and lose ends tied up about three weeks after that). Mike and Jeff are busy, probably because they do good work. Keep talking to him about your needs and what you want. Overall, a very good experience with a contractor. How often do you get to say that? Cheers Mike and Jeff!

Thank you for the review. I do apologize for the issues with the water heater. As I mentioned, this was the first time we have EVER had a problem with our brand of water heater-and for some reason, it was indeed one thing after another with it, from the supplier's mistakes to the first defective part we have had from this brand. I am glad the issues did get resolved and thank you for your patience with us regarding this. We have a small but busy team of four full time employees and a fifth part timer, but each and every client is of utmost priority. As for hard piping the water heater, this is required by the City of Chicago Plumbing Code-we are not allowed to use flexible connectons. The hard piping, which includes a combination of copper and brass fittings, is of superior quality as well to those flexible connectors. We recommened the flushing and anode inspection every two years, and can assist if needed in this. Thank you so much again for the work as well as taking the time to review us here.

Service was great. Jeff called to let me know he would be a few minutes late (he wasn't late). He was very careful about cleaning up. He knew exactly how to fix everything and was very quick and efficient. He also took the time to check for leaks under the jacuzzi tub through the access panel.

We've had chronic drain clogging due to living in a 100 year old house. After several attempt with Drano and "snaking" we called Goode Plumbing. He was an hour late, but called us beforehand to let us know he was running late due to another job. He was accomodating to our schedules so we wouldn't have to take off work early. When he arrived he was very helpful, covered his shoes before coming in and used air pressure to remove the drains. It's been over 2 weeks and everything is draining fine.
Description of Work: Removed difficult drain clog in bathroom sink and bathtub in very old house.

Pretty good experience. The original bids we received from several contractors were all over the map, and none really had a great idea of the issue with our catch basin. Mike's bid was very competitive and he seemed to understand the problem. When a second issue arose, they were able to bring in some advanced equipment and diagnose it quickly. Overall a good experience - well, as well a major plumbing job can go. Mike and his team deserve their high ratings. He even gave us an Angie's list discount that helped assuage some of the pain from the second issue.

Mike Goode and Goode Plumbing did a few services for me. My water heater wasn't functioning (pilot light was not staying lit) - I called Goode plumbing, after realizing it was more than a simple thermocoupler fix. Mike came by and worked on the thing for 2 hours, and could not get it to work. Instead of just leaving it, however, he didn't charge me a penny, and got me in touch with someone who could. Unfortunately, he could not fix it either! To make a long story short, Mike stayed in contact with me the entire time and when it was finally decided that the only way I was going to get hot water was to replace the entire appliance, he came out right away and did an exceptional install. My water heater was in an extremely tight space, and Goode was able to remove my old, and install the new. Other plumbers that I received quotes from all were planning on removing the wall ($$$). In addition, their pricing is fair and their warranty is exceptional.

I had called several plumbers on Angies List to get estimates Mike was the only one who came out to look at the scope of the work needed. Where the others just gave a price. Mike's price was fair after comparing others, but I feel his estimate price was more accurate since he was able to see the space and what he had to work with. Mike was very professional and took the time to explain what needed to be done. I also had a crazy water banging noise that only happened when the basement toilet was flushed. Mike suggested that I replace the toilet valve before he got the gig. I am happy I hired him.

Mike was very professional, explained the problem well, described other things that I could do improve the pressure even more if I wanted to. Great experience all around.
Description of Work: After the city shut off the water on our block for some sewer work, the water pressure at my bathroom sink came to an almost complete stop. All other fixtures were fine. I called Mike and he was able to come out right away. The problem was a valve that had broken due to rust debris that had gotten into it when the water was turned back on. He replaced it and was done in about 1/2 hour.

I called Goode late on a Thursday because I had a leak under the kitchen sink. He was able to send a plumber early Sat. morning. Tim was very prompt and found that the disposal was leaking. He left and picked up a new disposal and installed it within a hour. Tim cleaned up after himself and every thing seemed fine. About a week later I discovered another leak. I called Mike and he sent Tim back that same day(the leak was very slow). Tim found a defective valve, replaced it and only charged me for a service visit. Even though it took 2 visits the work was done well and I would certainly hire them again.

Mike did a great job. The ejector pump in my house was about 10 years old and needed to be replaced. Two valves were leaking - one on the ejector pump and one on the sump pump - and they needed to be replaced as well. My hot water heater never appeared to have any kind of maintenance done and I was not certain whether to do maintenance on it since it as also about 10 yrs old. Mike checked the anode rod first to see if it was worthwhile to do maintenance on the water heater. The anode rod was still in one piece and so he replaced it and did the maintenance. Overall it took a couple of hours to replace the pump, put in the valves, and drain the hot water heater. My hot water heater had the T&P valve pressed into the wall and Mike moved the water heater so it was no longer blocked by the wall. He also installed the missing drain pipe. He was very professional and answered all my questions. The estimate he originally gave me was the same as what I paid. I would definitely use this company again.
Description of Work: Mike installed a new ejector pump, replaced part of the pipe attached to the ejector pump, replaced two check valves including one to the sump pump. He also did maintenance for my hot water heater and installed a new anode rod in the water heater as well as replaced a missing drain pipe from my water heater.

Late monday night, my toilet started leaking water from the base... I left a message with Goode plumbing that night itself... I got a call back first thing in the morning... I really appreciated Mike fitting me into his busy schedule... he was efficient and punctual... Professional, he wore those protective plastic covers on his feet when he came into my apartment... gave me an accurate estimate of the work to be done and proceeded with repairs... he replaced the wax ring of the toilet, brought the water pipe to code (at no additional cost) and applied caulking to the base.... When the job was completed he cleaned up the place..

Mike was awesome! He was punctual and professional. He actually gave me a good discount from their normal rate. I still gave him a B on price because I felt the price was not excellent. It only took him about 15 minutes and he charged $75. I think the normal rate is actually quite high. He did not quote me an hourly rate, which I thought was a little frustrating. He was appreciative of me being an Angie's List referral.

Hi-thank you for the work and the kind words. I do agree that the job was completed quickly, which is why I lowered the price. Our normal rate takes into account more time to do the job and to clean up. The reason that we do our work by the job rather than by the hour in most cases is so that we can give you a price up front rather than a "guesstimate". That way there is no surprise to our customers at the end. I'd love to lower our prices even more, but unfortunately the cost of doing business only allows us to go so low. I'd rather offer you excellent work at a reasonable price, something I feel we do quite well. Thank you very much again for the opportunity to serve you!

Mike arrived on time and thoroughly examined our bathroom downstairs to determine if there's a problem with our slow flushing toilet/sink. He spent 30 minutes examining the plumbing and explained everything he was doing. He advised us to wait and see on the toilet before we spent alot of money repairing something that may not be broken. Best yet, he didn't charge us for the visit! He's very personable, clearly understands plumbing, and is obviously honest. I will definitely call him again!

They arrived promptly to install the hot water heater and got it installed in one day. They needed to come back a second day to finish up the clean up and some minor items. They also came back another day to address some plumbing issues. They were very courteous and did a great job of cleaning up. The only thing I would recommend is that they communicate more clearly since I didn't find out that they needed to come back for a 2nd day until right at the end and had to juggle some things to be available the next day. The main complaint that I have is that they did not mention that the unit they were installing needed to be vented and it is VERY LOUD when it is on. So loud that my tenants on the first floor have complained. This information would have been good to know prior to deciding on the unit since, I do need to take these things into consideration since I have tenants. So I would rate them a "D" on communication. However, the work and unit were very good.
Description of Work: I had to replace a hot water heater in my 3 unit building. I did get other quotes and went with them since they offered a discount and higher quality product that met the needs of the building.

I apologize for the things that you were not satisfied with. I am surprised by your "B" rating in quality as I feel both the unit and our work were very high, an opinion you seem to agree with according to your text. I do apologize for the need to return another day for exterior clean up-and minor adjustments-we simply ran out of light outside as we were there until well after dark. We wanted to make certain the venting trim out and exterior clean up were completed to a high standard that I did not feel we could do in the dark. I certainly did not want to inconvenience your or your tenants. The unit that we installed is a very high efficiency water heater with a power vent system, which requires direct venting to the exterior. The model that we provided is quieter than the vast majority of other power vent models on the market, and to be honest we have not received any complaints in terms of noise. I did not know that the noise was bothersome to your tenant. What I will do for you is install a muffler at no cost which should cut the noise level considerably. As always, our goal is your complete satisfaction. Please call me and let me know if there is anything else that we can do to make up for the things that have left you less than that. Thank you, Mike Goode

I came home from work on Wednesday evening and found that my old 50 gallon water heater was hissing and leaking water. I tried to operate the drain valve and it came off in my hand, followed by a deluge of water from the tank. After shutting off the water source, gas source, and draining the rest of the tank, I started looking for a plumber. A neighbor recommended that I call a local plumbing supply for a recommendation of someone in my area. I called them on Thursday and they recommended Goode Plumbing. I called Goode Plumbing and talked with Mike Goode, the owner. I told him that I needed a new water heater and was interested in possibly replacing it with a tankless model. He asked when I would be available that he could come and talk with me. I told him that I would not be available until 6:30 that evening, and he said he would stop by. Promply at 6:30 he showed up. His last job of the day had been rather messy, so he stopped at home before coming over to take a shower. When he arrived (even though he was all clearned up) he put on booties before walking through the house to ensure that he didn't track in anything. I was not very familiar with tankless water heaters, and he spent over an hour discussing my options, telling me the pros and cons of tankless units, discussing the price differences, and letting me know what work would have to be done. He was willing to spend as much time as necessary to answer all my questions. He made sure to tell me about the energy tax credit that would be available for installation of an energy saving unit. Installation of tankless units involves a considerable amount of work, especially installation of the concentric venting to a new outside source (in my case, across the basement and out the wall). He already had a couple of jobs lined up for the next day (Friday) but said that he would come and at least get started. When I came home Friday night, much of the work was completed. He called me and let me know that he would come in on Saturday morning if it was okay with me. When I returned home from work on Saturday evening, everything was installed and working, the basement was cleaned up, and the things that had to be moved to install the new vent were neatly rearranged on the work bench and shelves. I was VERY pleased the work. Mike was very couteous and professional, willing to spend time answering questions, told me to call him on his cell phone if I had any questions. In addition to all of that, I couldn't be more pleased with the installation. I'm very happy to have found a plumber that does great work, gets the work done rapidly, and ensures that everything is keep clean, I highly recommend Goode Plumbing.
Description of Work: I replaced my old 50 gal water heater with a new tankless water heater. It involved removing the old water heater, mounting the new wall unit, running a new (larger) gas line to the new unit, running a new concentric vent/air supply from outside to the new unit, reworking the water piping, installation of a new drain line, and installation of a new electrical receptacle.

Jeff called me when he was close to my home and arrived right on time as promised. After looking at my problem, he explained what was needed to one solve the immediate problem and also to bring the installation under code. We discussed the price and I was initially taken aback since I didn't expect and couldn't really afford it. We talked some more and after consulting with his office came up with a price that I could afford. I have to say, Goode plumbing really respects Angie's List members and worked really hard to provide a price within my budget. Also, the technician was very interested in doing the job correctly instead of just doing what was needed to resolve the problem. A precipitating cause of the issue, was the pipe not being tethered to the ceiling, Jeff not only fixed it in one place, he added a couple of additional holders to insure it would not come lose again. I am very happy with the service, the courtesy and professionalism of Goode plumbing and would hire them again in the future.

Well, except that the renter in the unit did not advise the unit owner (who lives in another state) of the need for the repair until later, when the $738 (a non-common element expense) was billed back to the unit owner.
Description of Work: Drain obstruction noted in a common drainline, with rodding and pressurized air used to clear the obstruction. The cost for this portion of the work was $189. In addition, numerous deteriorated pipes and fittings were replaced under the kitchen sink of the unit owner that had asked for help. The cost of that was $738.
