Overall we had a great expereince working with Mike at Goode Plubming. Our water heater was making an awful noise and Mike came out personally to provide an estimate to us; he was prompt and did not charge us a fee to come out to evaluate the situation. Mike recommended we replace our unit as it was 7 years old (no longer under warranty) and the part we would need to replace would be very costly and would likely only add a couple more years to the water heater's life. Within the next 5 days he provided an email estimate to us for materials and labor. In the meantime, we also got a second opinion from another company and were charged a fee to come out and provide an estimate. This company also recommended we replace the unit. Based on Mike's initial assessment and fair pricing, we scheduled an appointment with Goode Plumbing to install the new water heater. Mike coordinated everything on our behalf; he sourced and purchased the unit so that all we had to do was schedule one appointment with his company. Mike came out first thing in the morning and efficiently installed the new heater. He even covered our hardwood floors with cardboard so that he did not damage anything in the process. He cleaned up the area he was working in and was very friendly and easy to work with. We would definately use his services again.

Thank you, Member. I was able to install the unit the day after Thanksgiving. This was a Bradford White power vent water heater. Bradford White is our choice for conventional water heaters due to their high quality and reliability. We back them up with a labor warranty that matches the parts warranty-in this case, six years. Our competitors typically offer a one year labor warranty. We also install a much improved drain valve and use brass fittings at the water inlet and out let connections, which we find to be superior to the dielectric unions that most other companies install.

The plumber was running late - I had called to see where he was and got a prompt call back. Once he was here, he assessed the problem, suggested the least expensive alternative would work just fine for our issue and proceeded to fix our sink piping in quick order. He also took the time to check out a few leaks we thought we had. Friendly plumber, great job and we saved 10 percent with an Angie's LIst coupon. In the future we will call Goode for our plumbing needs.

Excellent experience. Mike ( I think; I wish I had written down his name because he was GREAT!) not only solved my two immediate issues, he educated me on things I could do in the future to prevent issues,as well as educating me on another plumbing matter perhaps involving the whole building. Service was prompt ( appointment was given in a reasonable amount of time and within my schedule, called ahead and arrived within the window given), courteous and professional, fixed the problems and really educated me how I could prevent issues of a similar nature in the future. I appreciate that approach very much. Cannot say enough good things about this firm. I will rehire for future plumbing needs.
Description of Work: Looked at two trouble spots - tub drain which was not draining at all, and main water feed to kitchen, which I had been told during my new dishwasher installation ( by another company) had to be "replumbed". Drain was power rodded and a much simpler yet equally effective solution to the "replumbing" was performed for the main water feed. It was determined that all I needed was a new handle, versus replumbing the entire feed.

We had a leak under our kitchen sink this summer. Goode's plumber came out and immediately determined that our older, inexpensive faucet was the problem and a new faucet was needed. (this is after we had paid another plumbing company to fix the leaking, and paid $500 for a fix that was NOT the problem). No charge by Goode for the visit (it was just 5 minutes), and they offered to install a faucet they had available in the truck. Once I finally got around to purchasing another faucet, I called Goode and had an appointment scheduled within 2 days of my call. Bob arrived on time, and got started immediately. He was not familiar with the brand of the new faucet , and made sure to carefully inspect the new faucet for all parts and make sure he had the necessary tools and additional parts to install it correctly. When the old faucet was finally out, unfortunately we discovered that the hole in the granite was not large enough for the new faucet. Bob suggested two ways to remedy the problem: call a counter/tile company to come out and enlarge the hole, or try a tile file to file down the opening (it only need 1/8" more width). I followed Bob's suggestion with the file, and thanks to Menard's, found the correct tool and widened the counter opening myself, with no damage to the counters for $10. Thanks Bob! The next day, Mike was able to come out and complete the installation in the morning, and I was only charged for the single installation fee, not for two service calls. This was a great experience, and both Bob and Mike were professional, friendly, and left a clean work site, disposing of the old faucet and packaging materials of the new one.

Thank you, Member, for the kind words! I am glad that you are happy with Bob and myself. Bob is very concerned about doing things properly, and while every once in a while we may find a brand that some of us may not be immediately familiar with, we do have the patience to read up on them and make sure everything is done properly. We have seen far too many faucets and other products installed improperly and promise that you will not finding us taking a shortcut.

After finding Goode on Angies List, I scheduled an appt. by submitting a form online through the Goode website. Michael called me within two hours of submission and scheduled an appt. for later that week. Jeff arrived within the scheduled time frame and immediately identified the problem and quoted me a price. Due to the nature of our issue, Jeff fixed the problems right away. He had to leave and come back a couple times with the right tools and gadgets but was very courteous and helpful in showing me the issue, helping me understand why it was a problem and how he fixed it.

Thank you, Member, for the work and taking the time to write a report on us here on Angie's List. We get a fair amount of calls regarding odors that emit from the plumbing system in homes and other structures. These can be intermittent, making them a challenge to locate sometimes. Plumbing Technician Jeff, who was at your home, is pretty persistent about finding these, though, and I am glad he was able to help solve your plumbing problem.

Very well. I would definitely work with owner Mike and his colleague Jeff again. Jeff showed up on time, finished on time, and did high quality work. (I was the General Contractor on a major renovation at our previous house, and I have a good idea of what constitutes "high quality.") Even though the plumbing was merely in the garage, he made sure the lines were straight and attached cleanly. He took the extra time, appropriately, to install shut-off valves per faucet, even though there was already a master shut-off for the garage. As he was installing one of the lines, I requested that he move the copper over, to accommodate bikes that I wanted to hang in that spot. He did so with a smile. He spent a good amount of time discussing my options and then discussing the best way to the drain the lines. The faucet for the garage roof deck will need to be threaded on after the installation of the wood siding, and Jeff offered to return to the house to install that faucet, with no extra trip charge. I wanted to explain the "B" rating for responsiveness: Initially, Mike was very responsive, including a call-back or two on the weekend. Once the estimate and ultimately the work was scheduled, I had to follow up multiple times on email and phone messages. Perhaps Mike was very busy at that time. This was not a deal breaker, though. As indicated, I would definitely work with Mike again. It was a very good experience, and I highly recommend them. Also, in a separate interaction with Mike, he provided valuable advice on a plumbing issue at another house that we own. He spent a good amount of time on the phone with us, and I want to make sure that was also recognized.
Description of Work: We had plumbing to our detached garage. Goode Plumbing extended the copper plumbing to provide water to the garage roof deck and to the side of the garage. I had someone else do the sealing. From the estimate: Supply and Install Frost Free/Anti-syphon Hose bib on exterior of garage. Woodford Model 17. Install approximately thirty feet of half inch copper pipe type L to a regular mount hose bib at garage roof. Both units to have drain valves at lowest point. All pipe to be secured properly to wall area. Owner will be responsible for sealing hole thru garage roof (We can do this for an additional charge if desired). Lifetime warranty against defects in our workmanship. The price of $990 included the Angie's List discount. $990 might seem like a lot, but I received two other estimates that were significantly higher.

Thank you very much for the work and the kind words. To us, it doesn't matter if the plumbing we are installing or servicing is going into a mansion or a garage, or whether it will be exposed or behind a wall, or under a sink-our goal is that of quality. We want it to function properly and look pretty to boot! I do apologize for the delay in getting the estimate to you-I do try to process the estimates as quickly as possilble, and complete most of them on our initial visit and present it to you before leaving, whenever possible. I wish I'd had the opportunity to work with Mike, because from the great reports and his courteous demeanor, it seems like he's a great plumber. Sometimes he'd call me back and leave a message just to acknowledge that he'd received my call, which I really appreciated. But despite my constantly reiterating that I was trying to schedule several different contractors to get work done on a vacant apartment for a deadline, he continually failed to return calls to actually schedule the work. I really hate having to hunt down contractors. I get that he's probably good and way overbooked. But the bottom line is, I appreciate contractors who can fit me into their schedule on a timely basis, especially when I wanted him to do well over $1000 worth of work.

Thank you, Member. I appreciate the work and this report. You mentioned our cleanliness, and that is an area that I really do try to take extra care in. I used to work for a company whose owner and other employess refused to take their shoes off or wear shoe covers, and would track mud and snow and so on all over the place-and then they would open up a wall to do a repair, without laying a drop cloth down. And at the end, they would leave the mess for the customer to clean up. I have even had contractors working in my own home who tried this! I felt it was very disrespectful. So, we are very careful when cleaning up. If we have a situation where there is an unavoidable, large mess to clean up, we work with a very good (and highly rated) professional clean up company.

After leaving a message, I got a retun call by the end of the day and since it wasn't an emergency was able to pick a date and time that worked. Since the project was fairly simple, it didn't take much time to finish the installation of the garbage disposal, replace the pipes, and give a little giggle on the hot water valve to make everything work again.
Description of Work: Initially it was just a little adjustment on a hot water shut off valve, but then our project became that with a garbage disposal installment and replacement pipes. It was always a "yeah, we can do that" and it was done in no time.

Thank you. We used a Ridgid K50 drain cleaning machine to clear the obstruction in the kitchen sink drain. Also, the outside spigots that we use are high quality. Many of the spigots that we come across leave much to be desired in that area-but ours are backed by a two year parts and labor warranty-double the norm.

Our building recently had a building-wide inspection performed and the state of our catch basin was bad. Because one of our units was taking in water and we knew a catch basin repair may solve the problem we set out to get estimates. When I first called Mike in the middle of August, he was very professional on the phone. He came out the same week that I called and had an estimate to me a week later. I did ask Mike about the status of the estimate after about a week, but he was apologetic about the delay and got it to me within a day or so. His turn around was better than one of the other contractors that was looked into, so it didn't hold up our process anyway. Once our building decided to go with Goode Plumbing, I called Mike and he said he was working on several projects at the time, so the earliest start date would be after Labor Day. We didn't actually start the job until the middle of the month, but Mike was in contact with me every few days about the projected start date. The job was done as explained above. It seemed like the job was really messy while in process, but Mike's men cleaned up every night so that we had use of the walkway when they weren't there. Rick, the crew member there every day, was friendly and explained the status of the project every day. None of my neighbor's have complained about the work or workers either AND the unit that was taking on water before, didn't during the last wet spell we had!
Description of Work: Mike's crew did a complete rebuild of our 6-unit condominium's catch basin. All of the original brick and some piping too needed to be removed. Most of the demolition was done by Rick over 2-3 days. He moved the majority of the material out of our rather tight walkway, by hand, to the back of our building. I'm pretty sure that he couldn't fit a wheelbarrow through our gate, so that's why he had to do it by hand. By the third day, a crew of 3-4 men came out, placed a dumpster on the street, and carried all of the cement material that was behind our building into the dumpster. Rick then had to clean out the very bottom of the catch basin by hand. This appeared to be a very messy job and took 1-2 days. By the middle of the second week, the crew returned to start rebuilding the new catch basin. New pipe was placed at the bottom of the catch basin where the water goes out to the city. New brick was laid and a gravel fill was added where needed. The top of the basin received a new cover and new cement was poured for our back walkway. We had a pile of fill remaining on the street for a few days after the crew left, but Mike was very responsive in getting that taken care of within a day.

Thank you very much for the report as well as rewarding us with your project. As you mentioned, we were running a little behind getting your project started. This was due to the large demand for flood controls this year-we like to start and complete one project at a time rather than drag things out by working on several large projects at one time. We really do our best to get things done in a timely matter and let you know up front about delays whenever possible. The job did turn out well, and I am glad that you are happy with us.

We had sewer water back up into our finished basement twice in one week in July. It was difficult even getting someone to come out to provide a quote, since they were all so busy. Goode gave me a very fair price especially considering that he honored his Angie's List coupon of 10% off. I was originally told the job would take 3-4 days. It ended up taking 17 days. Some of the delay, I think, was due to Mike's crews being so busy with other jobs. But, to be fair, much of the delay was due to them trying work around the (2) trees we have in our very small front yard. As they dug, the had to cut through tree roots and eventually we realized we had to have one of trees taken out. Mike and his crew were really great about trying to save the tree and then removing the stump (which was no easy task) after we had the tree removed. Mike felt badly about the delays and offered me a great deal on future maintenance. Mike and his crew are very professional and take the time to explain everything they're doing. I highly recommend Goode Plumbing!

Thank you for the report and the kind words. I do apologize about the job running longer than we both hoped it would. I believe the 3-4 day quote as a miscommunication or misunderstanding as the outside flood controls typically take 7-10 working days overall when they need to be excavated by hand, as this one did due to space restrictions. This one was even longer due to our starting the job a couple of days later than we hoped due to a previous job taking slightly longer to complete (once we are on a job, we like to stay on it until it is completed) as well as trying to work around the tree that you mentioned. I am happy that you are happy with the work, however, and I did give this client a couple of perks for her patience. The system that we installed for you passed inspection with the City of Chicago and is sure to give you years of protection from sewage back up.

Mike's work cost us only $70 because he missed the original appointment time. He was supposed to come at 8:30am on September 1st. I called at about 9am and it turned out that the appointment didn't make it onto his schedule. He was able to come at 1pm. He worked on the toilet seating problem and then cleared the drain. He refused to accept any money because of the mix-up. I forced the cash I had on hand on him. It turned out after he left that the toilet repair had a small leak. This was fixed when he came back the next week to fix the second toilet. I was again surprised when he told me there was no charge for this second visit, for which was most on time. We had some discussion. He refused to accept any more money. Everything has been working fine since. Mike evidently take his reputation very seriously. I believe he also has a strong personal responsibility ethic. He is also simply a nice guy.

We do our best to provide the best customer service that we can. One of the things we do not want to do is have a client waiting and wondering where we are at when we are supposed to be at that client's home. We do our best to arrive within a scheduled time window-and while things can come up in this line of work, we call when we are running late. In this case, however, we had a mishap in our scheduling that I felt should not have happened. To make up for it, I felt that it was right to donate some of my time in exchange for the time our customer spent waiting.

Installed a flood control system in our 1888 row house that flood when City shut off the sewers due to rain. Mike was fantastic to work with and extremely knowledgeable about old plumbing. He found another drain that needed to be tied into the system. He spent days patching it in and charged us only his cost to perform the fix. I beleive he is a person that cares and wants to do the job right. Evidence of this is the high quality parts and valves he uses in his flood control system. They are more exprensive but will last much longer. Mike is now about to help us with other plumbing "opportunities". Mike, help us out of a terrible situation. He is our plumber for life.

Thank you, Member. This was an interior located flood control system. Our systems feature all cast iron drain work. This system had dual back water valves as we always recommend. We appreciate the work, and the member recently hired us to do additional work this coming week.

One of Mike's associates, Jeff, came out to take a look at the source of some water leakage that was going into our downstairs neighbor's condo. Another plumber had been out previously and recommended a large scope of work (which we did not trust or want to agree to, for a number of reasons), so we wanted another opinion. Jeff came exactly on time, after calling 10 minutes before to give us a heads up he was on the way, and was very professional and respectful of our home (he wore the shoe protectors to prevent tracking dirt, for example). We orignally were going to just get another estimate of the original proposed work, but instead just asked Jeff to take a look and give us his opinion. He assessed the problem and suggested a much easier solution, installing a flood guard in the pipe in question. He did this without knowing exactly what the other plumbers had recommended, and did not try to get us to agree to large scale, expensive renovation work. This impressed us. He completed his work in about 1.5 hours, and agreed to email us a write-up summary of his recommendations and work, so we could communicate that to the condo owner below us. My only (small)complaint was that this took over a week to get, and I did have to make a call to Mike to receive it. However, because he saved us so much money and time and effort, this was not really a problem for us. We will definitely use them again in the future if needed.
Description of Work: Assessed leak source and installed a flood guard in the pipe in question.

Thank you for the kind words. We will never try to sell you something that we don't honestly feel you need. I do apologize for the delay in getting the quote to you-we have been doing our very best to handle the large volume of emergency calls and flood control systems that we have had since the large amount of rain Chicago received a few weeks ago. Thank you for being patient and I will make every effort to get any future estimates to you in a more timely manner.

They were available, prompt, professional, and very personable, both on the phone and in person. Plus the plumber wears shoes covers. Gotta love that. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: Replaced a cold water supply line and connection tubing to an under-sink filter which had a mildew taste/smell.

Thank you for the positive review! I am glad that we were able to fix the issue with the water filtration line. I lived in Arizona for some time and have a pretty fair amount of experience with water filtration systems-the water quality there was quite a bit worse than it is here in the Chicago area, so filtration systems of some type are very common there. And yes, we always wear our shoe covers in your home no matter the job size.

That which will occur next, I can't write about, but I feel confident that Goode will find the problem, clean it out, and it will be finished.
Description of Work: After the terrible rain, for the first time in my owning my house, I had lots of water in the basement. I found Goode Plumbing in Angie's List, called them, and a plumber came out in about 45 minutes. I was amazed. He used the router for several hours, then the next day the "water pick" was called to further clean out the sewer pipe. Together they got the situation under control and I have had no more problem. The next week they returned with a camera, to find the cause of the problem. The cause of the problem needs to be dug out, so within this week that will begin, in my front lawn, I think. I am so impressed with Goode Plumbing: their promptness, professionalism, friendly personalities, and, compared with other plumbers, reasonable charges.

Thank you very much for the report. This client has a fair sized issue with her main drain, and we are currently working on a permanently solution. We were hoping that it would be close enough to the city main that it would fall under the City of Chicago Private Drain Program, but recent camera and location work revealed it was within an area not covered under that. We will find a solution that is affordable but permanent for her.

Overall an excellent experience for solving two problems. First, our sump pump had suddenly become very noisy. At the end of a cycle (when the motor would stop) there would be a loud bang, akin to a door slamming, and the PVC pipe (into which the sump pump actually pumped) would shake considerably. To me it sounded as if the check valve was broken. I had one plumber come by who felt that the PVC piping simply had to be stabilized. He tried "clamping" the pipe, but when that made no difference and I repeated that it might be the check valve, he did not seem convinced, and did not even examine the check valve. When Michael Goode of Goode Plumbing came, he simply closed the service valve, and took out the segment of pipe with the check valve. He showed me the check valve, and it was indeed broken. The little spring mechanism that controls the actual shutting of the valve on its hinge had broken loose. Michael had a comparable check valve in his van; he installed it, and it worked flawlessly, completely eliminating the "slamming" sound that had developed. The process took less than 10 minutes. The second problem was simply a leaky garden hose faucet ? one of the "freeze-proof" types. It was not leaking into the wall; rather, when the water was on, there would be a very slow leak around the handle itself. I had seen this type of problem before, and knew that it only required replacement of the center or "core" of the mechanism. Michael Goode had the appropriate parts in his van, and replaced it in about 10 minutes. Michael was very professional and approachable, and I felt he did an excellent job of explaining to me what had happened and what he planned to do about it. I was extremely pleased with the service, and would definitely offer future work to Goode Plumbing.
Description of Work: (1) Replacement of check valve on sump pump. (2) Repair of garden hose faucet.

Thank you for the work, as well as this report. While our VW trucks are not the largest on the road, they are very well stocked. I am glad we were able to fix the items right away, on a Friday evening. We had our backflow specialist schedule an appointment for additional work needed by this Member.

Very Good, will recommend to others and will use again.
Description of Work: Goode Plumbing repaired a shower faucet for me. They returend my calls promptly and showed up on time, on a Saturday without an extra charge. A couple parts were needed, so Tech went to get it from a store and job was done in a couple hours. Their prices are comparable with others.
