He remodeled our basement. He is very handy. He is reasonably priced. He is kind of jack of all trades. He can do mostly anything that we need him to do.
Description of Work: I used the services of G & G Custom Carpentry & Remodeling for remodeling. I last used him in December 2011.

Dan immediately responded after our first contact and was exceptional to work with. He came out to the site and reviewed our drawings and scope of work. As designers, we tend to be particular about the details, and Dan with his subcontractors were able to complete the job to our specifications on budget. He exceeded our expectations by working on Saturday to make up for the time lost from 'snowmaggedon' during the first week of February. He was exceptionally clean around the house and a genuinely friendly and trustworthy person to have in the house and around our young son. Turns out, after little chit chats here an there in passing, we knew quite a few of the same people and had a good laugh on how small the world is. For jobs of this size and larger, I would definitely work with G&G again and have recommended them already.

We could not have been happier with Dan's work. We spent a lot of time obtaining bids and meeting with contractors but it really came down to getting a good feeling with Dan and a very competitive bid. Dan was very punctual and performed all of the work as planned and beyond expectations. Our biggest nit picking with remodeling is the finishing details and Dan did not disappoint. I still look at the little details and wonder how he made everything blend in so well. As with all jobs there were some small changes here and there and Dan was extremely accommodating with them and was always helpful with advice. I would whole heartily recommend Dan for any project, I would trust him with remodeling my entire house. I'm still amazed that with a large project we didn't have a single complaint.
Description of Work: Dan remodeled our living room. He opened up a wall, built a new stair railing, created a new closet and tiled our entryway floor.

I initially sent an email to G & G Custom Carpentry & Remolding specifically describing the scope of my project. I then followed up with a phone call 5 days later because I received no email response. I left a message with my name and phone number. I received a voicemail message from an employee four days later asking that I call back. I have called back twice, left 2 messages, but no one has returned my call. This process has dragged on for well over 2 weeks. It?s obvious that they are too busy to return my call to schedule an appointment for an estimate. This is a POOR business practice and an indication of how they treat their clients. Their unprofessional behavior raises a red flag. How will they respond if a problem or issue occurs with a project once they?re hired? I am no longer interested in hiring this company for my project.

The fact the various surfaces involved (floor, joists, walls) were uneven and not level made the task more challenging than one would expect, but Dan worked through it and we now have an outstanding set of stairs from our basement to the 1st floor of our home. We're very pleased with the outcome of the job and the ultimate price. Dan has a great humor and is obviously comfortable with a variety of wood working techniques. We'd not hesitate to bring Dan in again to work on our home.
Description of Work: We engaged Dan to rebuild our basement stairs. There were as old as the house (100+ years) and had been edging toward unsafe as time progressed.

Dan was amazing. His prices were extremely reasonable, his work was all first rate and he found us great vendors and subs to work with. The work came in at the exact amount of the estimate and was completed on schedule. We loved working with Dan (after the project, my kids were upset that Dan wasn't coming to the house) and would hire him again whenever we need work done.

G & G Custom Carpentry is really a one man operation and Dan is skilled in all areas of construction. The project was done on the second floor of a in a turn of the century six-flat. The bathroom was converted from the traditional tub/sink/toilet layout to an open concept shower/ sink/ toilet with no shower doors. The room was demoed down to the studs and floor joists. The floor was a suprise - two layers of tile and a concrete slab. A new floor was sloped toward the floor drain, new shower pan installed, and new plumbing to replace old and poorly installed pipes from the 1970s condo conversion. The exterior wall was insulated, a vented fan and a new energy efficient window installed. Dan rewired for additional ceiling lights and upgrated electrical outlets. He completed the onyx and marble tiling. As with the renovation of any old building there were suprises behind the walls but Dan is very resourceful and offered intelligent advice and solutions to to unexpected problems. The original plan to reconfigure the doors into the master bedroom/bath and the closet changed toward the end of the project, but even with the unexpected and the changes the project came in on budget. Dan is very easy to work with and I highly recommend him.

Dan came out to look at the space and mailed me a written estimate soon thereafter. We scheduled a firm date, and Dan came and completed the work in two and a half days. The finished project looks excellent-you cannot tell that there was ever a large hole there and the TV on the wall is perfectly centered, and the wires are perfectly hidden. Dan really went above and beyond my expectations-we had a large, heavy TV on the original shelf which Dan was nice enough to take out and put downstairs for me. Following the job, we had an issue with the tilt of the TV, and Dan came out on the weekend to help us. I would definitely recommend G&G Custom Carpentry for the high quality work, very reasonable price, and responsiveness to questions.
Description of Work: Dan filled in shelf-space above a fireplace and hung a 52-in. flat screen TV. In connection with that, he re-routed the pre-existing electrical, cable, and telephone wiring and painted the new wall.

Dan is pretty much a one-man operation, and he worked hard and made good use of his considerable knowledge throughout this two-week project. He's generous with advice and resourceful about solving the problems that inevitably crop up. He's also an entertaining guy who keeps things interesting with his stories and views on the events of the day. I'm happy with the bathroom that resulted.

Dan was able to squeeze our job in very quickly and finished the job up in about 3-4 days. He was very communicative and the price was half of what I was quoted by other contractors!
Description of Work: We needed our old shower in the attic remodeled. It was an old metal-based shower from the 50s. Dan from G & G Custom Carpentry took out the old shower, built a new shower base and drain, tiled the walls, added new drywall, and added new fixtures. He also replaced the old, leaky valves on our first floor shower.

The workmanship was superior. The small glitches you inevitably run into were taken care of personally by Dan. I think he is probably the best value in Chicago.
Description of Work: They did a total renovation and gut job of the 3rd floor. They tore out a bathroom, took out a tub, sealed in a wall, put in a wood floor, refurbished and updated a staircase, put in new lighting on three stair landings, wood floor in three landings, put in all new doors, painted, did all plumbing, crown molding and new baseboards throughout etc.

We really enjoy our new kitchen. We worked with Dan before on our bathroom remodel. Dan is a pleasure to work with. He is trustworthy and gives excellent advice. The project started and completed on time. It took about three weeks to gut, refinish, install cabinets and appliances. Then, we waited two weeks for the counter top vendor to install the granite counter top. After that, Dan came right back to install the plumbing and tile. The quality of work is excellent. Dan was very responsive to our requests for small changes.
Description of Work: Gutted 10x10 kitchen and pantry. Installed new electric. Hung new drywall. Installed cabinets and appliances. Adjusted plumbing. Installed tile back splash. Basically everything for our kitchen except counter top install and floor re-finish.

Dan was great. He went above and beyond what we expected and barely charged us additional. Anything additional was requested by us. He and Richard showed up for work every day (including Saturdays) until the project was complete. They removed two walls in our kitchen to open up the kitchen to a small bedroom and placed beam in the ceiling in place of the walls. They rerouted some electrical and patched up the walls (we haven't decided what to do about the floors yet, but that wasn't in the contract). Then they finished a previously unfinished room in our attic including drywalling, hardwood floors and a skylight. They also framed and drywalled two hallway closets in the attic space. They had to run some new electrical for this as well. Everything turned out great and looks fantastic. We'll definitely be calling Dan again when we're ready to finish the rest of our kitchen!

Overall I am pleased. It was a very small job so I believe it was difficult to be able to schedule too much in advance with Dan. We only had to spend one night away from our home until the new toilet was installed and the tile set. I wanted the majority of the job to be completed in 4 days and Dan got it done in 2. Some minor complications. he toilet started leaking from the bottom. Dan came back out to repair that and then came back a few days later to seal the tile grout. I did notice several days later some light patches in the paint job. I ended up just touching those up myself. Dan and Radim were clean and efficient and hauled away the trash. I also appreciated their concise estimate for work.
Description of Work: Dan and Radim demoed our old tile and toilet and installed new ceramic tile and toilet in our only bathroom. They installed new baseboard and then they primed and painted our ceiling and walls. We bought: The tile, primer and paint. We bought and they delivered: Toilet and provided: Grout, caulk, baseboard, etc.

This project was definitely a learning experience for me. Dan and Vortek are extremely knowledgeable about their business. I wish that I knew more about remodeling before I began the project. Communication is a very important aspect as I am extremely particular. Dan's price was good and they even found some issues in my basement that if not addressed could have been a disaster for me. The quality of the work was alright, the materials used were not was I would have picked, things like MDF baseboards, hollow core doors and Pittsburgh paints (their colors are not true to palette) but I should have asked in detail what was going to be used. I really needed guidance from Dan and team because of that, miscommunication ensued that left me not being completely happy with the results of the basement. I do think parts of these issues were my fault but for my first home project, I needed someone who was going to provide direction and ideas on completing this project.

We are really happy with Dan's work and feel that we got a lot for our money. He started the project on time and wrapped it up in six weeks. The total cost was as proposed, with the exception of a few extras that either were noted as such in the proposal or were requested by us after work began. Dan's a great guy to deal with and is either on site or easily reachable throughout the project. He's really flexible and handles special requests and modifications without a problem. He coordinated installation of a new heating system in our lower level, saving us a lot of trouble, and he picked up all of the items we ordered and disposed of all debris at no additional charge.
Description of Work: Dan and his crew converted the finished lower level of our condo into a master suite. Work included a complete remodel of an existing bathroom, which involved pushing out two walls and relocating the entrance. G & G relocated plumbing and electric and installed floor/wall tile, radiant heat, a tiled shower base, toilet, pedestal sink, exhaust fan, all fixtures and hardware, and a new pocket door. They also enlarged the entryway to the bedroom closet, installing new French doors in the wider opening, and they installed new recessed lighting and pendant lamps, along with switches and dimmers. They removed the existing carpeting, painted the walls, ceiling and trim, and installed a new bi-fold door and external exhaust for the laundry closet. Additional work on our main level included installing a new bi-fold door on the kitchen pantry and a wood transition molding between the kitchen and dining room.
