The woman who called seemed professional at first and then the telltale signs of "hard sell" started. My definition of hard sell in home improvement is the type of sales team that immediately starts closing you and setting up the circumstances to favor their heavy handed approach. Here is what transpired: After confirming name and address, she asked, "How soon do you want to start this project?" This is a trial close in any textbook. I said, "Pretty soon." [You see I teach professional selling skills, but we are planning on making a decision within the next few weeks.] She hesitated but then started to tell me about their $200 promotion and the 60 month, no-interest financing available, even before she asked what I had in mind. After a few more qualifying questions, I said I was available this Friday afternoon if they could come out then. I also explained that it would have to be late in the day as my wife was having surgery first thing in the morning. The woman confirmed my appointment for 3 PM and then asked, "Will all the property owners be available at that time?" I replied that my wife would be incapacitated due to her medical procedure. When I reminded her of this, she paused for an appreciable amount of time. I then said, "So, does that somehow knock me out from your perspective?" She replied, "PRETTY MUCH." I said then I choose not to do business with folks like Four Seasons and would take my business elsewhere. If you choose to call these "tin men," [see the Richard Dreyfuss 1987 movie about high pressure, home improvement salespeople], be prepared because they will come loaded to bear to get you to sign on the first meeting. I cannot think of another description of pressure selling other than the behavior demonstrated by their appointment person. I really did not want to experience the actual sales call.
