+ -1 moreNo problems. Doug and I left voice mail messages over perhaps 3 days before we were able to talk in person. He came out and visibly inspected the damaged riser the next day and gave me a verbal estimate of $850 by phone. I did not receive a written estimate. We decided to go with this company because we have such good experiences with highly rated Angie's list companies.
Description of Work: Previous windstorm had caused a 40 foot blue spruce to fall on our telephone line and our electrical line. Althought the electricity was not disrupted, when Commonwealth Edison, inspected the damage they informed us we needed a licensed electrician to reattach the electric line to the corner of our house. Doug of Douglas Electric came to our house a few days after I called and informed us he had to replace a fitting and reattach the riser (metal pole which holds the electric wires and runs alongside the corner of our house up to a spot just beneath the roof). He told us it would take about 2 hours, his worker would have to have the electricity shut off while working and the cost was $850. We did not get multiple bids as we usually do. Due to all the rain that week, we had to wait for a dry day. Finally someone came on Saturday morning right on schedule (8:30 am). In addition to a new fitting, the electrician installed multiple clamps attaching the riser in 3 places and then put a new connection at the top corner where the elctric line comes to the house from the alley. Power was off perhaps 1 hour. Everything was very professional. All material was cleaned up before the worker left. We were informed we would get the bill in the mail in a few days.

+ -1 moreWe have worked with Doug in the past, and he does an excellent job. He initially told me he only replaces entire buzzer systems but agreed to come out anyway to see if he could fix ours. He ordered and replaced the amp and re-wired some of the faulty wiring to get our system working again. I did have to contact him a couple of times to remind him to come out to take a look because he was always driving an couldn't write down my info, but he gave me his email address, so I just emailed him. I was willing to take an extra step because I know the quality work he does. He is a little pricey, but if you want to get a quality job from a reputable company, I would highly recommend Doug.
Description of Work: Repaired broken front buzzer system (new amp, wiring, transformer); replaced photocell sensor on rear parking lot lights.

They were very reliable, they did everything right, they were very nice to work with, and they showed up on time. They were pleasant and competent. I would recommend them to anybody. We got other bids so we knew what the price should be, and they were definitely fair. They weren?t way under or way over; they were somewhere in the middle. They definitely knew what they were doing. I would absolutely use them again.

+ -1 moreDoug was great - prompt, professional, and gave great advice to us as new homeowners about what needed to be done to make sure our house was safe. He suggested other ideas (like adding an outside GFCI outlet to the front of the house) that were very helpful, but without being pushy. Of all the various contractors and services we had to use when we first bought our house, Doug and his men were the most professional and great to work with. His rates were very reasonable as well.
Description of Work: Doug and his crew replaced an electrical panel, tested and fixed outlets in house, re-wired the basement and installed new light fixtures, and added GFCIs to the bathrooms and kitchen.

+ -1 moreDoug came out to give me an estimate, and walked through the home with me, answering a number of questions I had about electrical-related matters and our 1905 house. He provided me with an estimate, which was the cost of the repairs. The 2-man crew showed up on time, and although they took an early lunch for an hour or so, they worked solid, checking wiring throughout the house as they went along. Both were very courteous and professional. I plan on using them again.
Description of Work: Relatively minor work found on inspection of our home. Fixed reverse polarity at several GFCI outlets inside and out. Installed 2 overhead lights in furnace room, installed light fixture inside closet, brass floor-safe outlets in LR floor, converted an outside outlet to GFCI.

+ 0 moreAs usual these guys are great. Doug met us in the evening to do the estimate. We felt comfortable leaving the two electricians alone in the house unattended for a couple of days. Doug's guy Richard installed new can lights for us a few years ago and was back to do this job. He's very respectful of the fact he's in someone's home so it was nice to see him again.
Description of Work: Installed a new panel with ten extra circuit slots because the older, smaller panel was full. Separated main house circuit into smaller circuits so that high load appliances (e.g. hair dryer, coffee maker, vacuum, etc.) could be run without tripping circuit breaker. Installed light switch to power former pull-chain light fixtures in utility room. Pulled two new circuits and installed new outlets for rooms without outlets.

+ 0 moreContacted company, spoke to Doug (owner). Came to review work needed. Sent proposal. Called him back to come to my home to discuss layout with siding company boss and he agreed. He and siding boss discussed coordinating how outside work need to be done. Decided to sign contract with his company. Each day I spoke with Doug and the forman and worker. When necessary, asked me how/what I needed so work would be done correctly.
Description of Work: Removed 2 old housing circuit boxes. Moved to another wall and added a 3rd box. (The reason was cause I am going to be replacing my rear staircase). Each box was bigger than the other. (The look of uniformity did not only give me more breakers but cohesiveness in the layout). This was done by them alone. As the days went by, another outlet was added for me and needed 3 more outlets. For 2 of them, I was asked where I would like the placement. Got inside-outside back-to-back. Also added a separate switch for the furnace and separate circuit where necessary. The outside electrical setup was done as stated. Their work was professional and they cleaned up each day.The owner came to look and update me ever day. They worked a total of 5 days. Doug also contacted ComED for me to update them. and explain to me their process. End result is I am very please with the job and would recommend them to all who need electrical work to be done. Working with the owner, the forman and worker gave me the feeling that all would turn out great.

They came out promptly for the initial bid, but the second time was difficult. It was a good experience and their prices were reasonable. I would use them again and recommend them.

I showed him what I wanted to do and he gave me a couple of options on how to proceed.I had the estimate in a email 3 days after his site visit and we were able to come to a final bid over the phone,the work was scheduled to start one week later. His crew showed up on time and were professional . Richard, the crew head had a much better idea on how to route the power into the basement then either Doug or I had. The job took about as long as expected and the crew did a good job of cleaning up after themselves and took the time to label the breakers in my new panel.

+ 1 moreIt was difficult to actually get them to come out (I sent emails and got no response; I called and was told I'd receive a call the following week when they were back from vacation, but I had to make the follow-up call myself) which was annoying, but once they came out they were very professional and the price, I thought, was fair. The electrician gave me some good advice (noting that some work would need to be done in the future, but not pressing me to have it done now, or by them) and did some additional jobs I hadn't asked for in my initial request. I would use them again.
Description of Work: Test and replace outdoor motion lights; install garage motion light; replace front porch light fixture; install new back porch light fixture; shore up wiring from power lines to house.

The light in the living room was also affected, and he fixed it as well. I also had an outlet in the kitchen that had not worked for about a year, and he replaced it. + -1 moreDoug showed up on time and spent a few minutes inspecting the situation and offered a couple of different possible solutions. Doug appeared knowledgeable and experienced, and was easy to communicate with. In the end he thought the job would depend on the wiring and conduit already existing(this is a newly rehabbed condo). Although I thought it would be a simple thing to just look in the fuse box and have those questions answered, he saw no need to, and later sent me a nice written estimate for work that would require installing new conduit through closets and vent soffets. The cost was huge, about $1200, but possibly correct for the amount of work he specified. However, a different electrical contractor showed up shortly after Doug to provide another estimate. The estimator looked inside(and behind)the fuse box and quickly saw sufficient existing conduit to do the job for 1/4 of the price.
Description of Work: Asked for estimate to add an additional circuit for our 2nd bedroom.

+ 0 moreI was having problems with light bulbs burning out too quickly. I contacted three companies to see if there was an explanation for this problem and if repairs needed to be made. Doug was the first (and only) one to call me back. He spent about 15 minutes explaining the different possible causes of my problems, recommended some solutions that I could try and then gave me an estimate for adding a surge protector for my circuit box, should that become necessary. I was very impressed with Doug's quick response, the time he took to discuss the problem with me and his professionalism. If I need to install the surge protector, I won't bother trying to find a cheaper price, I will simply have Doug handle it.
