I had 4 hours of masonry work for the deal that I purchased. Three workman came and I asked them to repair a stepping crack in my bricks that was about 4 feet in length, and then to look around the house and fill in anything else that needed to be done. I believe that they were here for less than 1 hour. The area that they filled had a crack in less than a week. I don't think that the joints were ground out, only extra mortar added? Either way, the repair wasn't right and I don't believe that they did anything else around the house.
Description of Work: I purchased an Angie's list deal. I thought that I needed tuck pointing for my chimney based on information given to me by a house inspector. I bought the deal and had them come out to do the work. When they looked at it I was told that the whole chimney needed to be rebuilt. So, I wondered who was right? The contractor or the inspector, and since the price would be close to $2,000 I thought I should get a third opinion. I called someone that I had used for masonry at my church, and he confirmed that the chimney needed to be rebuilt. While he was there looking, he pulled off many climbing vines that had grown up all over the brickwork. I decided to give him the job because I was familiar with his work. I did call back Dependable to do some general tuck pointing around the house a month or so later to use my coupon. I can understand that they were unhappy that they didn't get the big job of rebuilding the chimney, but I felt that when the tuck pointing was done, it wasn't done thoroughly.

I have never told or showed the customer that I was unhappy about not getting the rebuild job. I also told the customer that structural cracks will come back and there is no guarantee.

Joe came out and gave me a quick and reliable estimate for the work and also prepared me for any potential other work that would be needed if fixing the chimney didn't solve the issue. Thankfully it did solve it and I already see major improvement with the brick along the side of the house and in the basement where it was previously leaking. Joe was easy to communicate with in person, on the phone and by email. I was very happy with the service.
Description of Work: My chimney was leaking because of some poor construction at it's base and it was dripping all the way down the side of the house, through the chimney and into the basement.

The quility of the work was fine and the quote up front was detailed as to how much each area of the house would cost. My only concern was it was several weeks from the signed contract that the work was performed and I wasn't given a date for the work until 1-2 days before. I would also reccommend sending a final bill in the mail or leaving a detailed message about the remaining unpaid.

Not at all what I expected. We were not able to get on the same page. I wanted a small job , he wanted a much larger job done and even when he tried to reduce his scope of work, I was told 2 men would be needed to work to completed and additional charges would be necessary for me to relocate the water heater. I had someone else and completed the work in less than 4 hours without any relocation of the water heater and 2 people were not needed.
Description of Work: No work was performed. What I wanted and what he wanted to sell me were totally different. I wanted a small masonry job on the inside of the house. He wanted to repair the exterior chimney.

I never wanted to sell the customer a bigger job. I informed the customer of the work that needed to be done properly. She decided to get a temporary fix by another company. I never wanted to sell her any work on the chimney outside I informed her that the chimney was rebuilt previously and that it looked like it was done by a handyman and that whoever did the work never installed a chimney cap.

Shortly after the Dependable Construction appointment visit , we went to Menard's construction department and they printed out foundation designs with exact estimates of gravel and different sands for various depths based on our description of how we wanted to build the mailboxes . It took them less than fifteen minutes to listen to what we wanted and then have their foundation design machines print out the designs and the materials estimates . Then , my 67 year-old husband used a round hand hole digger to dig the foundation site in about two hours of manual digging over a couple of days . Surely , if a retired old nurse could do the digging , and later all the construction of the foundation and laying the bricks in his spare time , I am hard pressed to see what prevented Dependable Construction from completing the same work that their agent admitted was real 'masonry ' work . Again , in my humble opinion , Dependable Construction DID NOT fulfill their contract as represent/stated in the Angie 's List order we purchased February 27 , 2012 . Cheryle A. Collins
Description of Work: This was , in my opinion , an unfortunately terrible purchase and experience . The offer was for "$99 for Four Hours of Masonry Repair ". Yet , when the firm responded to my multiple inquiries by phone and fax , this experience did not meet my expectations . I purchased the coupon offer on February 27 , 2012 . We called Dependable Construction on March 5 , 2012 to set up an appointment . Unable to speak with anyone at the firm on that date , we left a message for the firm to call us back . They returned our call on or about March 16 , 2012 and left us a message that they were going to "... call ANGUSES LIST to verify your contract ." We waited over a month to hear if Dependable Construction had verified the Order Number and Coupon Code we provided them in our phone call on March 5 , 2012 . With no further follow-up from the firm indicating whether they had really verified our contract , we sent the firm a fax , on April 14 , 2012 7 :43 AM , with a photocopy of my Angie's List order coupon . After a few days of delay , the company called and set a date to come and do the work we needed to be done . When the gentleman of Dependable Construction arrived we showed him the 'masonry' work we needed to have done . We had purchased bricks and mortar to build a decorative 2.5' x 3' mailbox at both ends of a planned circular driveway . All we wanted the firm to do was use their 'four ' hours purchased to begin the foundations (4-6 inches ground depth of rocks , gravel , leveling sand , 16 inches by 1 inch cement blocks and locking sand) . We were told : "We do not do that kind of work ." When we ask : "Do you consider laying bricks as masonry work ?" The agent replied : "Of course , brick laying is masonry ." So , when my husband asked again : "Well , since we paid for four hours of masonry , what prevents you from doing the work ? I mean , is it too hard or is it too small a job ?" The representative replied : "It 's not that . We just don't do this kind of masonry work ." To which my husband said : "O .k . Do we get our money back ?" The man said : "I don 't know . You have to take that up with Angie 's List ."

Most of what this customer said is not true. I called the customer the day after they contacted me and made an appointment for the following week. When I got there the customer wanted me to start building two mailboxes in the black dirt that he has evened out. I never told the customer that we do not do this type of masonry. What I did tell the customer is that we do not do this type of masonry without any kind of a foundation. I called the building department and ask them what the code was for building masonry mailboxes they said they do not allow them.(Reason is that they are not safe so close to the road) I asked them about the mailboxes that were already up. They said that they were built previously illegally. I called the customer and told him there were two reasons why I will not be able to do the work. Reason one is that the village does not allow them, reason two is that he wants me to start building without any kind of a foundation. The customer asked me about a refund I told him that he would have to contact Angie's list and they will be more than happy to give him one.

I am not surprised when I am not able to complete the work w/out extra expenses. Beyond the Big Deal! The chances of trimming trees or other work is not so nicely compartmentalized as to fit a Big Deal exactly. I get that. And I understand that these are used to introduce us to businesses we may like and want to use later. But my experience with Dependable Const was way beynd that. When Joe Baron came out and I wanted to have my chimney re tuckpointed he assured me it could not be retuckpointed and told me I would need to tear it down to the roof and rebuild it completely at a cosy of $3350. Whem I suggested something less drastic and less expensive like touching up the parapet walls he said that would require demolition and replacement also($5950)I'm battling leukemia and forced into an early retirement and could simply not afford those kind of expenses right now Esp not to utilize a $99 Big Deal I consequently contracted another roofer and tuckpointer who replaced about 5 bricks and retuckpointed the rest for about $500 He assured me replacing it was over kill. and not necessary Sincerely David L Fisk

Response from Dependable Construction
My only regret is that I cannot post these photos. The customer called me and told me that he needed work on his chimney. He also told me about his early retirement and illness. The chimney was a bigger oversize chimney. It has been tuck pointed numerous times before. Over 50% of the bricks started to show deterioration, about 15% of the bricks have deteriorated and cement plastered over, chunks of mortar were falling out from in between the bricks, the chimney had no chimney cap on it. It definitely needed rebuilding and a chimney cap installed. Anything can be tuck pointed but is that the right thing to do. A tuck pointing company that does not do masonry will do that they are simply not equipped to do masonry. They can do brick replacement here and there but that's about all (Dependable construction is equipped to do the tuck pointing and the masonry we pride ourselves on both) the condition of the parapet was the same as the chimney. In my opinion whoever did this job just took advantage of the customer.

I never told the customer that I did not want to do the work it's just that we do not do pavers. If we did do pavers I would be more than happy to do the work for the customer. I can see why this may be confusing. People see pavers and masonry as just bricks but those are two completely different trades. I know that there are certain companies that do masonry and pavers. Unfortunately we do not do both.

This process went super. I called Dependable Construction and had a Big Deal $90 coupon. Joe returned my call the same day. He explained that he was swamped with the Big Deal orders, but to please be patient and he would get to me ASAP. He was very pleasant an apologetic on the phone. In about a week, he came to my house. He noticed other cracks at the foundation and said they could be fixed. I was expecting him to find more things since the house had not been tuck pointed in fifteen years. He gave me a quote which I thought was very reasonable for all the work he did. The work was impeccable. He matched the existing mortar and the wall looks seamless. He even fixed additional cracks in the foundation that he found while working, and didn't charge me for them! This was the easiest major repair ever. My husband has been traveling and I am in charge of fixing repairs on the house. I felt really proud when I was able to show him the great tuck pointing job Joe did. I highly recommend Dependable Construction and I will be using them again. A+ from me!
Description of Work: I needed some tuck pointing done on my house. It is a hundred year old victorian brick cottage. I noticed that some of the bricks looked like they were bowing out. It also looked like the last person who tuck pointed just stopped when he got close to the bay window because the mortar was a different color.

I called at the end of August to schedule an appointment. He called me back after my big deal expired, but agreed to honor it. I asked him to repair some concrete in front of my house and he said he didn't offer that kind of work. He said he could come out and let me know what I can use the big deal for. I have called him and he claims that he has called me back and left messages but I never got any voicemails from him. When I did talk to him he told me I could get tuck pointing for $2000. I asked him what I could get for the $99 I paid and he said I could get 10x10 ft of tuck pointing for what I paid and I was fine with that and just asked him to let me know when he can come out. I gave him 2 numbers to reach me.

The customer called me on September 4 th.and told me that her deal has expired I agreed to honor the deal. She asked me to fix some concrete in front of the house. I told her that the deal was for masonry and tuck pointing not concrete. She asked me to go out and check for tuck pointing because she didn't know if it needed any. I looked at her house the following week. I called the customer the following day and left a message saying that the sides and the chimney need tuck pointing and the price would be $2000. About two weeks went by and the customer called and left a message that I have never called her about the tuck pointing. I called several times and left messages with the price. On October 5 the customer called me and we spoke she told me that I never called her about the tuck pointing. I told the customer that I have left several messages with the price. She told me that she has never gotten any messages and practically called me a liar. At that time I told the customer I was out estimating but from what I remember the price for the tuck pointing was $2000. But I would have to verify and call her back. She responded that she was not going to pay $2000. for any tuck pointing and asked me how much the $99 would get Her. I told her that it would probably get approximately a 15' x 15' area. At that time she told me to call her back after I verify the price and this is the time when she gave me an alternate number. I told her I would do that. The customer never told me to go ahead and do any work. About 10 minutes later the customer called me back and said that she did not want anything done, she was going to get a refund. I said okay. Why would I go out estimate a job and not call the customer with a price doesn't make much sense does it.

Our condo association got 4 estimates on chimney repair/rebuild for a 3-flat building and Dependable Construction seemed to be the best value. The area were he worked on the ground was so clean I wasn't aware that workers were even there the day he built the chimney. The chimney looked beautiful. One of the building residents went onto the roof & took photographs showing some cracks in the work. I called Joe Baran and he said the cracks were normal & would not hurt anything, nevertheless, he came back and covered all the cracks with tar. He also informed us that our parapet needs attention, and he covered holes in the flashing on the roof as a courtesy. He also removed the antenna from the roof, but left the wires intact in case we needed an antenna at a later time.

Needed tuckpointing done on my house so I bought a Big Deal for tuckpointing from Dependable Construction. Talked to Joe and informed him that I needed tuckpointing done on the back and side of my house. He told me he had some up coming work out in the suburbs that he needed to schedule and he would call me back as to when the date would be. He called and told me he would be in the area on Monday, September 10, to do the tuckpointing. I infomed him no one would be at home. That would be fine as we discussed the work that needed to be done and if there was anything else he would take care of it all. I came home that afternoon and everything looked fantastic and was done as discussed. And to my amazement everything was cleaned and there wasn't a mess anywhere. Would most definately use Joe and Dependable Construction again.

With the Deal set to expire on Aug. 22, I contacted Joe of JBDependable Construction in mid-July. He came out to look at the property a few days later and sent a proposal about a week after that. With time running out, some travel coming up and budgeting concerns, I told him we'd like to have the work done in September if he would still honor the deal. He said he would if he had another job in the area. I couldn't have a contract that said "Work will be done in September if the workers are in the area", so I asked for a contract with a deadline that he was comfortable with, and I got him to put in the $200 credit for the Deal. The estimate was for 10 man-hours, or $500, plus $35 for materials. The proposal, with an Oct. 15 deadline for the work, was agreed to during the third week of August. During the evening of Aug. 31 I was notified by email that the work would be done sometime on Tuesday Sept. 4. After a couple more emails over the weekend I was told that they would decide their schedule on Tuesday morning. At around 8 on the morning of the 4th I got a call telling me that the crew was on the way. He didn't know when they would arrive, but they had left an hour ago. Good thing I got out of bed then, because the crew arrived within 15 minutes of the call. I thought it would be noisy, messy work, but it was much more quiet and less messy than I had expected. The crew of three worked quickly. I was going out to take a look when they started up the truck - they were about to leave without saying anything! I consider that unprofessional. They should have let me know that they were done, invited me to look it over, and given me any care or maintenance information I might need. The wall looks very good and I am very pleased with the work. It took the crew only 1.5 hours, or 4.5 man-hours, to do the work. This was less than half the estimate and put us in a somewhat awkward position. I called and said that I figured we owed for 4.5 man-hours ($225) plus $35 for materials, minus our $200, for a total of $60. He agreed, though I think somewhat reluctantly. If the job had come close to the estimate we would have paid the full amount, but the actual job was not close to the estimated man-hours. In summary, the actual work was fine, we are grateful that the deal was honored beyond the deadline, and we got a fair price. I would have liked more than 15 minutes' notice before the crew showed up, and I would have liked the crew to have let me know when they were done.
Description of Work: They tuckpointed the brick portion of one side of our house. They smoothed the bricks and filled in the mortar. The Deal was for four man-hours of masonry work (at $50/hour) for $99. The cost given about includes this amount.

Response from Dependable Construction
Customer wanted me to check out his house for tuck pointing. I provided an itemized detailed estimate for grinding, tuck pointing and capstone resetting. At this time the customer only wanted to get the front of the house done. I provided the customer with a contract based on work to be done minus the Angie's deal not man hours worked. The customer also wanted a date on the contract that the work will be completed by which I did. The customer signed the contract and send it back. I communicated with the customer a few days before we went out to do the work and I told him that I'm not sure if we will do the job in the morning or in the afternoon he said that would be fine and to call him when we were on the way. The day that we were going to do the job I called the customer and told him that the men are on their way he said that was fine. As far as I am concerned I honored the deal for the customer but the customer did not honor the legally binding contract that he signed. Granted that the work did not take as long as I anticipated. The contract was for work to be done not for how many hours it took to do the work. Otherwise that's how the contract would have been written. Without any discussion the customer decided how much he should pay for the work. He just called and left me a message. As far as the care and maintenance is concerned he should be communicating with me about that not the workers. After all I am the one with over 30 years experience. The workers are there to do the job.
