A year later my friend returned and expressed great dismay at the shape of my floors. There was no sign of any varnish in the upstairs hallway and the baseboards. The stairs were visibly wearing. And there were spots on the main floor that looked to be much older than 1 year. There was no sign of varnish in quite a few spots on the main floor. At this time I was extremely busy with work. I put off calling D & E until last fall (Oct '09). When Derek and the man Derek refers to as the boss came to my house, they claimed that the worn floors were the result of having dogs, and since it was one and a half years since the installation, I had waited too long to contact them. I disputed that. I told them I paid for 4 coats of varnish because I wanted to ensure that the floors would hold up for many years. They were walking along the main floor, speaking in Polish. When they saw the stairs, again they claimed that the dogs caused the varnish to wear. I again disputed that, and walked up the stairs to the baseboards in the hallway (which have no varnish sheen whatsoever.) I asked them if they thought that the reason the baseboards showed no sheen was because the dogs were walking on the baseboards. (Sarcastically, of course.) When they saw the baseboards, they backed down and said they'd come back and fix the floors. I told them I didn?t want them to come back until the spring when I could open the windows. I have to admit I was really put off by their visit. Instead of being honest businessmen and admitting the job had gone awry, they made excuses and tried to place the blame on my dogs. This did not sit well with me. I was also concerned about having to go to the trouble of removing all the furniture and the process of the floor refinishing, only to have them do another crummy job. So I called Derek in the spring and told him that instead of him coming back, I wanted a refund for the varnishing. He said he would talk to his boss. After they came over I had the floors looked at by 3 flooring guys. When I asked one of the flooring contractors how old he thought my floors were, he said 15 years. Another of the contractors said there was no sign that any varnish had been applied, let alone 4 coats. They all agreed the dogs would not cause the amount of wear my floors were showing, and that the job was substandard. To sum up, 2 general contractors and 3 flooring professionals all agreed that the job was poor. Two of the flooring pros told me that the varnish was either defective or diluted. The flooring pros indicated that the floors would have to be resanded and refinished. In the meantime, I started to become concerned about the amount of money it would cost me to have someone else come in to do the job. I changed my mind and thought I would bite the bullet and have D & E return and make good on their promise to fix the floors. So I called Derek today (June '10) and asked for a date when his crew would return. He told me flatly that the boss had decided th
Description of Work: Installed new hardwood floors on my main floor, repair and replace the stairs as needed, and refinish an upstairs room and a hallway for $5,292. The estimate included an application of two coats of varnish. After the installation and application of varnish, a general contractor friend came over and suggested that I call them back and have them apply two more coats of varnish, since I have two dogs. She said the 4 coats of varnish would ensure that the floors would last for years. I called D&E and they came back and applied two more coats.
