It went better than expected. I went on their website and bought a beautiful sofa that I had seen the week before at another design shop and Cole's price was 30% lower. However, it turned out that the last one had just been sold. Kevin contacted me and went above and beyond to make sure I was not let down. I went to their shop, which has great selection of models, and in the end, for the same price I got a couch from the same premium brand, but in a bigger size. Delivery was fast and super professional. Highly recommended.

When the installer left, I called Friedrich customer service and verified that my concerns were valid. I then called Cole's to inform them of the improper installation. Barry told that Cole's has only one installer who is an independent contractor, and my only option was to have Cole's send the same person back to correct the problems. I was very concerned about having the same person return to my home to install, but had no options. Subsequently, the Cole's installer called and made a date to correct the issues. The installer did not show up, nor did he call, on the day he scheduled the second appointment. I was concerned about the period of time that these heavy units were sitting on my window frames. I called the manufacturer and requested names of qualified installers in the area. I was given the name of B & G repair service, and had them re-install the units properly. I then called Cole's and requested a refund for the installation fee I paid them. Barry refused, stating that it was my duty to have called him when the installer didn't show up the second time so that Barry could get his installer to my home. I stated that I could no longer wait for that person, and that I had no confidence in his ability to install properly. Barry also stated that the installer had reported to him that I "hovered" over him as he worked. That is true, once I realized that he was not following the manufacturer's instructions for installation, I became concerned and did not leave him alone. After some conversation, Barry offered to "split the installation cost with me 50-50". I refused this offer. I do not feel I should have to pay any amount of money for such shoddy work, particularly when I then had to pay another installer to do the job. I do have photos of the problem installation, but am unsure how to send them. If you'd like to see the photos, please let me know how to get them to you. Also, I have several eye witnesses to the level of work done, including the person who re-installed the units. Thank you for your consideration.
Description of Work: I purchased two window air conditioners from Cole's. I worked with a Cole's employee named Barry who stated that Cole's required full payment for the units as well as the installation costs prior to delivery. When I questioned this, stating I would have no recourse if something was wrong with the air conditioners or with the installation, I was told that Cole's would correct any problems that might occur to my satisfaction. Thus, I paid all costs prior to delivery. The Friedrich air conditioners I purchased work well and were fairly priced. However, the units were improperly installed. Cole's installer either did not know how to install the particular brand of units, or did not take the time to install properly. Following are the problems with the installation: 1. The installer placed the units on top of my storm window frames. Proper installation requires that wood blocks be placed under the unit so that the weight of the air conditioner is on blocks and not on the storm window frames. The larger of the units bent the storm window frame. 2. The installer placed thin strips of balsa-type wood under one of the units. The wood strips did not cover all of the open spaace, and there was about 1/2 inch of open air space between the bottom of the unit and the wood. The gluing and placement of the wood strips was sloppily done. 3. The manufacturer requires a slight downward tilt at the rear of the unit. This allows water accumulated in the unit to drain out side of the window and prevents the water from dripping into the inside window frame. The units were not tipped. 4. The installer left packing styrofoam and tape inside the larger unit around the compressor. When I pointed this out, he stated "it's supposed to be that way". When I showed the installer the packing literature that stated it was mandatory that the packing material be removed, he then did so. 5. These particular units have a metal encasement or shell that is to be installed separately from the inner works. The installer did not follow those instructions, and when I inquired, stated "you only install that way if you're leaving the unit in the window year around". Subsequently, when I contacted the manufacturer, I was told that was incorrect, and that the two pieces must be installed in a 2 step procedure. 6. I purchased these particular units because they had a system for venting the air flow anywhere in the room. Once installed, I could not find how to direct the air flow. The installer stated that it was not possible to direct the air flow, and the only option was air flowing "straight ahead". The installer's assistant then read the owner's manual and found that the vents can indeed be directed anywhere in the room, and he showed me how to do so. 7. When the installer prepared to leave, I asked him to take the boxes and packing material with him. He told me that I needed to keep those things because "the way air conditioners are built these days, mine would probably break down in a week, and I had to have the original boxes in order to be able to return the units". I had spent a great deal of time and research in choosing high quality (and expensive) air conditioners and was stunned by this response.

For the past 70 years and to this day, we work hard to make sure that each and every client not only receives the most competitive pricing available but also the absolute highest level of service. Unfortunately, this does not sound to be true with your installation experience and we are working internally to make sure that this does not happen again moving forward. All of our installers are trained in-house and are also required to attend the manufacturers certified training as well. The installer on your specific job was one of our independent installers and from our past experience, he's one of the best in the industry. I apologize again that this does not stand to be true with your personal experience. Air conditioners are a very small part of our business but nonetheless are just as important to us as kitchen and laundry appliances, so we have circled back to make sure that our installers are properly trained on the installation of Friedrich A/C units. We have also now partnered with an outside installation company to be sure that more custom installation jobs like yours, that require additional contractor work, are completed properly. I apologize again for your recent experience with Cole's and please feel free to contact me directly if I can be of any additional assistance. They just made it easy. When you go online to purchase there are some many differing reviews of appliances. I just asked Barry for a good reliable model. We looked at two and after a clear description of their pros and cons made a decision. This was a 5 minute decision. They have a price match policy so I checked online afterwards and fount their price within $5 of the lowest big box store price and below that of others.

Kevin is the owner of the store and it is a family business and they treat you like family.
Description of Work: I bought a kitchen set from Coles and there was a problem with the quality. Kevin worked for hours to make sure that the manufacturer makes good on their product. He contacted me and made sure it was all good. I have never seen such customer service. I am very impressed and will tell all my friends about it.

Kevin is a great resource to the Northcenter community as well as the Chicagoland area. I purchased my entire appliance set from him during a major kitchen renovation which like most renovations ran longer than usual. Kevin, however was very accommodating and was able to hold the appliances until we were ready for them. He is very knowledgeable in providing the customer the information they need to make the right purchasing decision. In short his customer service is outstanding!
Description of Work: Provided competitive prices for similar or identical appliances I had already gotten price quotes for at a competitor. The items quoted for were: duel fuel range, hood, dishwasher, refrigerator, garbage disposal, HE laundry washer, and laundry dryer.

Fantastic. I did a lot of research on appliances and then proceeded to get bids from 3 stores. Cole's was not the lowest bid, but Barry (the owner) was really responsive and timely and seemed to be very interested in the businessso we went to the store for a visit. We liked the fact that the business is family owned (his son Kevin is there and informative and personable too). The exterior of the store is certainly "old" Chicago and the interior isn't showy, but both Barry and Kevin were great in walking us through the appliances we had chosen and called the appliance reps when there were questions that couldn't be answered by the in store literature. They came down a little more on price and although we ended up paying more than our bid with a big store, we felt that they were honest and that if we had problems, one of them would be there to help us. They also arranged for an independent contractor to install the appliances. That turned out to be as important as the sale as we had problems with locating the outlet for the microwave vent, and the range didn't fit in the space so our granite countertop needed to be shaved in place. As the contractor was also a kitchen and bath guy (separate report), we were able to get installation completed without calling in other contractors. We are so happy that we chose Cole's.

He set up an appointment with an affordable, reputable person to come and install my air conditioners. The delivery is free. I felt that, he really knew what he was talking about and I felt that I could trust his expertise. A much improved experience from going to a Best Buy. I got a good deal on high quality merchandise.
