CHW and owner John Wolf come across as very knowledgeable high end construction company. The truth is that they did not take the simple steps to protect themselves and my home with little to no site protection, attempting to tackel custom projects that they were not qualified for, specifying potentially deadly explosive products, over lengthy lead times, and relying on sub contractors alone to project manage jobs resulting in error, after error, after costly error.
Description of Work: I hired CHW in 2011 to do the following work in my home... -Master bedroom ceiling/ roof I had condensation on my vaulted ceiling during warm summer days. CHW determined it was due to the roofing material used in the original construction. Site protection for some reason only allotted for covering 1/2 of the roof area being worked on which left large areas open to the elements, it rained, water entered the home and exited in the master bedroom on the second floor and family room on the first floor, staining the carpet in the master bedroom, and destroying the window shades in both areas. Multiple carpet cleaning attempts were made to remove water stains, new blinds were needed to replace damaged ones. - Office floor outlet I needed a floor outlet installed in my home office floor. Knowing that there was radiant heating throughout the home floors, CHW broke into the concreet, hitting the heating system, flooding the office on the second floor, as well as the dining room on the first floor. Repair to the hosing was required before the work could continue. - Painting I hired CHW to faux paint the wood trim on my sky lights to match the rest of the woodwork in my home office. The artist hired attempted to paint without a drop cloth below them or any site protection, she dropped paint, it of corse got on the carpet, carpet cleaning crews were then hired to remove the stain. -Shower I contracted CHW to install a new drain, shower floor, and shower bench in my master bathroom. Original specification called for Cesar Stone to be used on the floor as well as the bench, with a simple drain along the side wall. First attempt... CHW installed Cesar Stone on the floor but used limestone on the bench, the more porous limestone stained from setting shampoo bottles on the surface (the main reason Cesar Stone was specified. The drain was installed in the wrong location and the Cesar stone on the floor cracked. An inch of black calk was used at the seams. The entire first attempt had to be removed. Second attempt... CHW removed original installed product, and left the shower demoed for over a month, promis after promis, the new installation date kept getting pushed back further and further. Once the new Cesar Stone was installed, the mastic under the stone was set too high, causing the head for the steam shower to be too lower than the new floor. CHW remedy was to cut a channel into the material where the steam head was mounted and fill the existing space with silicone calk. None of these alterations to the original design were proposed to me nor would I have approved them if they had been. -Fireplace I contracted CHW to install a fireplace in my family room. I provided an initial deposit of $15,000.00. After many meetings, I was reassured that everything would go smoothly and there would be nothing to worry about. The fire burner, fan, and additional internal components were delivered to my home, I inspected them, discovering that the burner was for external use only and that the manufacturer would not guarantee it's product had it been installed inside not to mention how harmful it could have been if they did. At that point I asked for a refund and returned the materials that had been delivered to my home. After several months of waiting, several requests for payment, and promises of a refund once the goods went back... i received a check for just over $600.00. A far cry from my initial deposit.
