Description of Work: Our chimney cap blew off in the great Chicago Blizzard. Was able to set up an appointment for Saturday. They were able to provide me a 2 hour window, called before they came and arrived promptly. Service was professional and courteous. I plan to use again in the spring for further chimney repairs.

+ 3 moreOverall, we had a great experience with this company. Mauricio was very prompt in getting back to me within hours of my email via Angie's List. He did a free site visit to provide a quote and then we decided to proceed based on the free site visit, the reasonable quote and the excellent Angie's List reviews especially regarding cleanliness. The work went very well and my client is so happy with her new fireplace! I did need to ask that some of the paint on my client's marble (floor of fireplace) be cleaned up around the edges and painting be touched up on a missed spot but this was easy to clean and the job was very well done. Fireplace looks and works beautifully and Mauricio gave me instruction in how to operate and suggestion on lighters. One note is that to be extra sure, I covered all of my client's furniture with plastic. I did notice dust but very minimal so I think it's honestly a matter of personal preference. Also, my client was going to pay in part by credit card and we were told that it would be a $20 service charge which Mauricio then decided not to charge us. So that is something we didn't know until final invoice so it would be good to ask about this ahead of time (or for the company to let you know) so you are prepared. All in all, well done and recommended! Thanks to Mauricio and his crew for excellent and prompt work.

+ 1 moreMauricio initially came to quote for installation of chimney caps. However, when looking at chimney stack in the basement he noticed that our water heaters were venting incorrectly and could be dangerous in event of a carbon monoxide leak. He quoted to fix this and he and crew came back just a few days later to complete the work. The crew were punctual, completed the work within 2 hours as originally indicated and left the basement spotless. After the crew left we did notice that the two chimney caps were not installed to our satisfaction. Two different types of cap had been used and one was crooked. I phoned Mauricio and he was great. Said they would come back and fix it the following Saturday. Today, the crew arrived on time and had fixed the caps within 30 mins. Mauricio checked that we were happy with the rework. Overall a very pleasant company to deal with. Probably not the cheapest company around but I would have no hesitation in using them again or in recommending them to others.

+ 1 moreI had water dripping from the basement ceiling. I was able to trace it to the furnace chimney. My regular heating/AC company came out and gave me an estimate on a chimney liner. When they came out to install the liner, they told me they couldn't line the old chimney; it would have to be replaced and they wouldn't be able to do it. I found A Chimney USA on Angie's List. I called them and Mauricio came out and gave me an estimate. They came out the next day and performed the work quickly and efficiently. Problem solved!

+ 3 moreWind storm in June blew off chimney cap. I had a day off of work and finally called around to see if could schedule new cap thinking would not be too difficult. Most places did not want to bother once they heard was a small job. Two companies said they could not come out for estimate until 2-3 weeks later and one said was not worth their time. After seeing other great reviews on Angie's List, I decided to give Chimney USA a try. They worked me in the same day and was at my house a few hours later in a snow storm. After quick assessment, they found some flashing was missing as well but said rest of chimney was in decent shape. They also agreed to patch an old furnace vent in my basement that was sucking out heat in my house, and remove the TV antenna on the roof. 2 guys finished work in about an hour. They even hauled away the antenna, which would have been a big pain for me to dispose of. Cost might seem bit high for hour's work but same day service, quality, and extras were well worth a small premium. Definitely would use them again.
Description of Work: Inspected and capped chimney, replaced flashing, removed TV antenna, and patched hole in chimney where an old furnace vented.

+ 4 moreThey were awesome. The brick work matches really well. We have had work done by other companies in the past on our brick and we have found brick pieces in the yard. We have had bad weather and have not had any issues.
Description of Work: They brought down our chimney to the gutter level of the roof, removed all the debris and garbage then rebuilt the chimney with new bricks that matched the existing bricks as close as possible. They built a new concrete crown and sealed the flashing. They are supposed to come back to install a damper and to convert our wood burning fireplace to a gas burning fire place.

They performed the fireplace and chimney cleaning for which they were scheduled and also inspected the fireplace chimney and furnace chimney. Both chimneys had rain collars which had slipped and flashing which had a gap above the roof. This seemed consistent with issues our home inspector had noted a few months before, and so they made the repairs. I was very happy with their work.

Description of Work: The work performed was on my Mother's house. She needed chimney repair, as a few bricks were damaged, loose, etc. After doing a search on Angie's List, I recommended she contact Chimney USA, based on other reports. When she called for an estimate, they came out the next day as promised. They evaluated the job, and gave a complete breakdown of each service or step. In addition, they noted that she had no liner in the chimney, and recommended that a liner be installed. The liner helps to protect the job and extend the life of the repair or installation. They quoted the liner separately, with no high pressure to install the liner, she could have just gone with the brick repair. So it was very nice that she was given a choice, without being forced to have the liner installed. They also gave her a discount for being a Senior and also for my membership on Angie's List. She said she would check with me before going ahead, and they did not pressure her at all. After reviewing with her, and based on other reports, I encouraged her to use Chimney USA, and to have the liner installed also. She made an appointment for 9/7/2010, and they arrived promptly in the morning, and were finished within 2-3 hours. It was windy that day, but they were not intimidated, completed the job as scheduled. They cleaned up after themselves very well. They also mentioned initially that part of the furnace might have to be disconnected to install the liner. Not sure whether they needed to do that, but in any case, everything is running smoothly. Mom is happy, so I am happy!

+ 3 moreMauricio was the only one of four bids that did not add unnecessary costs (new flue not required, all new chimney not required....as one $5000 bid claimed). He quickly completed the work and his guys even had to brave a storm squall with heavy rains while on the roof for 30 minutes while they were removing the framing for the chimney cap. Chimney looks like new and the house sold and passed inspections with flying colors. In addition, Mauricio (owner and project manager) did not try to charge me for two dozen extra bricks that had to be removed and replaced (not to mention further tuckpointing) that were found to be brittle once the work began. We are currently using him on another home we purchased in the area to fix two chimneys as we speak. Definitely call Mauricio.
Description of Work: Mauricio and his guys replaced the chimney cap, removed several dozen soft bricks and re-mortared the top 4 feet of the chimney. Also cleaned the flue and fixed damper. New chimney caps attached. GREAT JOB AND THE LOWEST PRICE of FOUR BIDS!

Some of the other quotes were nearly twice as much, and I can say with confidence that Chimney USA's final product is of equal, and perhaps better, quality. They finished the project in a short time and they left the building and grounds looking clean and tidy. They are very straightforward and honest. Of note, they also did a little bit of free roof repair that they noticed while they were working on the chimneys.
Description of Work: Chimney USA completely replaced and lined two chimneys which were crumbling and dangerous; they replaced a small portion of the brick that lining the exterior wall and parapet; and they also did some tuckpointing as necessary.

+ 1 moreMauricio, Joel and Jaime arrived at about 8:AM on July ST and had finished everything by about 2:PM. They cleaned everything up and removed all the debris. The crew returned after the Fourth of July to remove the chimney crown concrete forms.
Description of Work: Our 60 year old concrete chimney crown was cracked, which allowed water to infiltrate into the chimney, weakening the mortar joints. The upper clay chimney flue tiles were also beginning to deteriorate. Joel and Jaime broke out the damaged crown and flue tiles. They ground out the old mortar down to the roof line and tuck pointed the chimney from the roof up. They installed new terminal tiles and poured a new concrete crown. Then they installed a new stainless steel liner and packed insulation around it. The old fireplace throat damper was removed and a new Lock-Top chimney damper was installed on the fireplace chimney and a new stainless steel cover was installed on the water heater chimney.

+ 1 moreThe job was completed smoothly from start to finish. Staff was knowledgeable, courteous and work ethic outstanding in spite of the hot weather. While the estimate was not the lowest, we went with someone who actually examined the exterior and interior aspects of the chimney from all points and who had a great rating with Angies List. We feel we made the right choice and would highly recommend Mauricio, his work crew based on the job they completed.
Description of Work: The chimney on our almost 100 year old brick South Shore bungalow needed serious repair. To our knowledge, nothing had been done in the last 50 years. Got company name from Angies List and received quick response from Mauricio who came out, examined the chimney from the roof (other companies had looked at it from the ground) itemized the work required to make chimney safe and submitted estimate. The cost was appropriate for the repairs required and the once the bid was accepted a date was set within a few days. A crew of three appeared on time and with all the equipment needed and worked incredibly hard all day (10 hours) to clean out the chimney, rebuild a large section, tuckpoint the rest and install a new metal liner, replace the cement cap. Christian headed the work focused crew and Mauricio checked in frequently . The team was able to reuse the old brick that matched the house and the tuckpointing/masonry was expertly done with mortar matching the old color. All our questions about the work and details were answered and explained . The work was done neatly, clean up was more than adequate and a few days later Mauricio came to remove the form on the new cement cap.

There were some differing opinions between the estimator and owner Mauricio about the work that needed to be done; but I think the estimator was trying to be more budget considerate. In the end we are happier that we did a more thorough rebuild of the chimney. It will last longer, be safer and adds value to our home. I would recommend their work.
Description of Work: -Took down leaning chimney to the point of flashing and removed debris. -Rebuilt chimney from roof up. -Patched tar used for flashing. -Installed a stainless steel flu and chimney cap; knocked out hole in basement wall and attached furnace and water heater to flu and proper angle then sealed up wall. -Took out rusted and broken access door to chimney and installed new one. -Replaced bricks at bottom of chimney that were crumbling. -Cleaned up work areas and removed debris.

+ 2 moreThe chimney in our 119 year old house needed some help. It was unlined and literally falling apart,not to mention, not up to city code. Joel was totally professional. He came to look at the chimney and provided us with a quote on the spot, after carefully explaining the work they proposed doing. He had workers out the next day to do the job. The workers were prompt and polite and cleaned up very well after themselves. The work they did looks fantastic - we are no longer afraid of our chimney falling onto our neighbors roof or of it catching fire, it's like having a totally new chimney! There was a very small billing error and Joel personally came to our house the very next day to correct it - an honest and great company that I'd highly recommend.
Description of Work: Original chimney taken down from roof line and totally rebuilt, flashing resealed, chimney cleaned, double wall chimney liner installed, two vent holes sealed, bottom 5 feet of chimney in basement totally resurfaced.

+ 2 moreThis was a difficult repair and we ended up spending more than we had anticipated but I am impressed with the attention Chimney USA gave to the problem and that they did figure out how to fix the situation. The company president came right out when the first "fix" did not work and took charge. We had carbon monoxide venting into the house and they fixed that problem by replacing the venting. That sounds pretty simple but neither the gas company nor our heating/ac repairman identified the venting as the problem. I would definitely call them again.
Description of Work: Gas water heater was not drafting up chimney. After chimney cleaning, replacement of cap with new rotating cap, water heater vent was still not drafting properly. Company owner then came out and correctly identified that 3 inch vent was not large enough and did not have correct junction. Chimney USA then replaced with 4 inch vent and correct junction and we had hot water again.

+ 3 moreMy fireplace/chimney had been neglected for many years. Flooding in the basement caused many of the bricks to rot and I was getting effervescence in the attic. I use the fireplace a few times each winter and hadn't had it swept in several years. It was time to show it some love. I called Mauricio over to look at the job. He gave his recommendations and a quote and I agreed to have his crew come over on a Saturday and get it all done. Mauricio arrived with the crew and showed them what needed to be done and went off to do other things. They were an efficient team of three or four. One gentleman worked in the basement and the rest went about getting all the other work done. They worked non-stop from about 8:30 am to about 1:15 pm and did a pretty good job cleaning up. Mauricio left me a voice mail the next day to ask how it all went. I called him back when I noticed I could see daylight through the attic near the chimney. Within an hour he came himself to replace the shingle that split while the men were working on the roof. Great customer service.
Description of Work: Replaced many old bricks in basement; cleaned brick and tuck pointed in attic and fireplace; swept chimney; installed new liner; installed new damper and caps.
