SERIOUSLY? OUR OVERALL RATING AS A COMPANY IS EFFECTED BY THIS? I AM AS SHOCKED AND APPALLED BY THIS DEVELOPMENT AS SHE WAS BY US PARKING IN HER DRIVEWAY. HAD SHE ASKED US TO MOVE, OR MADE ANY INDICATION THAT SHE DID NOT WANT US THERE, WE WOULD HAVE GLADLY OBLIGED.

Not good. I cannot understand how this company has such a good rating here. They showed up with a truck that was too small, so they had to basically make two trips. They charge hourly and had multiple guys just standing around in the alley by the truck. I think one guy ought to do the trick for this. As soon as they thought I was out of earshot, they were complaining that I had too much **explicit**. They dropped multiple pieces of furniture, they damaged furniture as well. Paul said they would send someone out to repair the scratches, then gave me the runaround and lied to me about it. They scratched the wood on my stairs and damaged my walls. Do yourself a favor and do not hire these guys.

The move went flawlessly, despite me being slightly disorganized in the packing department when the movers arrived. I scheduled the move a few weeks in advance, and Checkmate estimated that 3 movers could handle the job in 3 to 3-1/2 hours. They arrived right on time and called ahead. The movers utilized straps to carry 400 CDs at a time down 4 flights of stairs and quickly cleared out both locations. The move took 4 hours due to the larger load than anticipated, which was my fault through not recalling everything that needed to go when I initially made the appointment. All 3 movers were very nice and willing to do whatever it took to get the move done. They also successfully squeezed my queen sized mattress up a very tight stairwell in my house. All in all, it was a pretty painless process.
Description of Work: Moved my belongings from a 4th floor apartment and a house basement to my new house. Included in the move were approximately 5000 CDs and a few thousand 7"/LP records plus a few bulkier items.

Movers were a couple of hours late- I called after half an hour late and the office asked the movers to call me. They called, and were about two hours late. I bought $40 worth of insurance ($2000 coverage.) I asked if I should move a fragile wood and paper screen myself, given that time was short. They assured me they could handle it. Upon arrival at my new office, the screen had a small tear in it. The foreman told me to call the company on Monday. I called, nobody answered, there was no answering machine, when I finally contacted someone and said that the screen was torn and I thought a shelf was lost, they promised to call back that day but didn't. After almost a week, I called back, was told they would discuss the screen after trying to locate the shelf. I insisted we discuss the screen, which I said could not be repaired. They stated the bill of lading specified only repairs were covered. I read bill of lading which stated the company is responsible for repair or replacement.

Checkmate Movers made moving a breeze! I called Kevin and spoke to him approx. two and a half weeks before my move. Kevin was great at asking me specific questions about the items I wanted moved and he gave me a range estimate based on the amount of time he believed it would take for a team of three movers to do the job. We arranged to move me on a Thursday morning. Bill, Daniel, and Steven showed up right at 10:00 AM as promised! They were extra careful with my 120 year-old bed room suite and took extra care not only to wrap it, but to make sure it was secure in the truck. Packing me out of my apartment only took 40 minutes! Once we arrived at the townhouse, Bill and his team had me unpacked in a little over an hour. I cannot say enough about checkmate and how helpful, professional, and efficient they are! Oh and Kevin's estimate was right-on. No surprises-moving was a breeze!

Overall fine. We began on time, loaded up and quickly realized that one truck would not do the job. So, we agreed to leave stuff in the garage (thank you, buyer!) and they came back later with a second truck, moved everything to our new home. In my ratings, I said I wouldn't hire them again. I said that because I would probably want to go up-market with movers in the future. These guys were fine and their foreman was solid. So, don't read this as a negative.

I called to get an estimate and they were able to give it to me over the phone. The estimate was $367.00 which seemed very low, but I went with them anyway. They called that morning to let me know they were on their way. As soon as I met them outside, I told them that I had a lot of stuff which when they looked they wanted to let me know that the price would be higher, I was fine with that because I expected it to be twice the amount in the first place. There were 3 guys and they did a fantastic job. They were very careful with everything, yet very quick. Once we got to the new house they asked me where everything should go which was great because there were a lot of items that were going to the second floor. After all was done, they gave me the new bill and I was happily surprised at the amount. The total also included the insurance that I opted for. I would highly recommend them!

Their estimate guy was okay. We asked for something in writing, like a contract and received a fax. The original quote was $420 and the final bill $775 because of the difficulty in accessing the condo and their hourly fees. They really weren't thorough in their estimate and their guys, even though they were very nice people, were slow. They did however end up showing up right on time. We ended up helping them just to get it done faster. They lost a mirror, along with damaging a dresser and a desk. We did not pursue the missing and damaged furniture issues. We will not be using them again.

This buffet was custom built by a friend of mine. It is extremely large and extremely heavy. They took as much care with this piece of furniture as if they had made it themselves. The move was done on a hot day, which made the piece that much harder to move. Not a word of complaint was heard. Navigating the stairs was tricky, but they got the buffet to the 2nd floor without a nick, scratch or dent, and made sure it was placed just where I wanted it. These guys are pros. I would recommend this company without hesitation. They are competent and conscientious, with strong backs and eyes in the backs of their heads.

These guys were amazing and I'll go out of my way to recommend them. They were punctual and EFFICIENT. My whole move took 4.5 hours (spot on their estimate), which is impressive considering I was moving a massive quantity of stuff from the 'burbs. Most impressive -- the three seemed to have boundless energy. (No lie: one guy JOGGED up stairs EVERY time he went to pick up a new load. He of course, was careful when taking the loads out.) I was so impressed with their work that I upped their tip by one-third. Not to keep gushing, but their hourly rate was also dramatically less than the other moving companies my Realtor recommended.

When they did the moving I was not there because I travel a lot for work. They moved my things to storage while my new home was getting prepared. When it was ready, they moved me in to my new home. I was there for that. When I called them the first time they did not show up when they said they would, they showed up the following morning. Other than that it was a good experience.

They were conscientious, but they arrived at 3:15 at the job site when they said they would arrive between 1:30 and 2:30. (They left their company at 2:45) They originally made an estimate of $103/hour for 3 men. Much to my chagrin they arrived with 4 men and charged $133/hour. We were not notified that they would need an extra person and ended up not needing another person. We were upset at the fact thet we had 1 extra person and had to pay approximately $50 more than expected. They were not fast, diligent or hardworking.

Called Saturday morning for an appointment asap. Scheduled for Monday around noon. I was informed that it wouldn't be a tight schedule and it depended on how the morning slot went. This was fine with me. Movers showed up at 12:15. Crew of 3 men, quoted at 105/hour. They explained and offered me insurance. I expressed particular concern with 3 of the items which were quite expensive. They specially wrapped and handled these items with particular care, which I greatly appreciated. I had no small items to move or boxed items as I moved all these myself. They disassembled and reassembled both the bed and dining room table for me. These guys were cautious, courteous, professional and wasted no time at all. Honestly, this was the best 160 bucks I've invested in a LONG time!

I called in advance (approx. 1 wk) to schedule the move. I emailed Justin a rough draft of the contents in my apt. & he promptly faxed back & estimate for approx. $400. He said he would send a crew of 3 people as well as 4-6 wardrobe boxes. The move was schedule for around 2:00 p.m in the afternoon (on a VERY HOT DAY!). The move out of my apt. was pretty efficient due to the dock and elevator. I had a few pieces of furniture that I was concerned about & they wrapped them up with bands & blankets really well. I must say that even though this was the 2nd move this crew did that day, & that it was nearly 95 degrees, their attitude & demeanor was terrific. Very friendly & polite. I was impressed. They got the truck loaded & quickly made it to Logan Square. The three man crew literally strapped the boxes to their backs & schlepped them up to my unit. All in all I had one broken dish. Move cost more than estimated, only due to the travel time, stairs & HEAT. They rock.

We opted to have 2 crews of 3 guys each to complete the job which was fortunate since all of our stuff wouldn't fit in one truck. The actual cost was higher than the estimate but we had underestimated how much stuff we had. We had a truck and a half full of stuff. The movers worked quickly and were very friendly. They were very professional and did an outstanding job. They wrapped all of our furniture very thoroughly and everything arrived in perfect condition. They even assisted us with taking apart our bed after we had stripped the screw and were totally hopeless. I would highly recommend them.

Our appointment was originally scheduled between 2-3pm. They called a day before to confirm, and offered to come 2 hours early as their appt. before was shorter than expected. They also went through an inventory with me of all items, including large furniture, number of boxes, rooms, etc. I underestimated the number of boxes - I said 50, but it was probably closer to 100. Based on the original estimate, I was told 3 movers for 5 hours, at a rate of about $108/hr. They showed up with 5 guys for $160, but we still took 5 hours because we had more stuff than we originally thought. We had an elevator as we were moving out, so 2 guys worked inside the apartment, 1 ran the elevator, and 2 loaded the truck. They were pretty efficient and worked straight through, except for a 5 min stop on the way back the second time to get some snacks and drinks. The amount came in over my estimate, but this was expected since we underestimated the amount of stuff we had. Overall, they were great!

They were great! They were very early, too. The appointment was scheduled for 4pm. They called at 10am and said they only had a small job in the morning and asked if they could come early. They said they'd call back in an hour and give me an exact time. Twenty minutes later they called back and said they were on their way and would be at the apartment in approx. 30 min. They arrived in about 45 min. They got all the furniture out of the garden apartment very quickly. There was one problem: We didn't have the special tool for an Ikea bed frame; they were amazing and got it out of the apartment and hoisted it up to the 4th floor of the condo and over a railing and into the bedroom. The frame only ended up with a few scratches on it, but that was OK. I was glad to have it! They also went with me to pick up a table at a store and then carried it up to the 3rd floor, too. They made all the heavy furniture look pretty light coming up all the steps! They were very professional.
Description of Work: We hired them to move our large pieces of furniture (A couch, two beds, two dressers, a treadmill, two tables (one very heavy) from a garden apartment to a 3rd and 4th floor walk-up condo. (We had moved everything else ourselves.)

Very responsive and accommodating when setting up the move, then proceeded not to show up on the day of the move. When I called to see where the movers were, it became clear they apparently forgot to put it on the schedule. However, they were apologetic and quickly pulled a team together, ultimately arriving 3 hours late. To compensate, the 2-man team only charged me for a 1.5 hour move, though it took about an hour longer than that. A couple of my end tables were scuffed up in the move, as was an antique dresser. I'd probably hire again, though, because of the way they handled their mistake of not scheduling my move.

AS COMPLAINTS GO, THIS EXCEEDS ALL STANDARDS OF PRINCIPAL, FAIRNESS, RESTRAINT AND ACCURACY. MOST PEOPLE WOULD VENT A LITTLE MORE. WE DID SCREW UP THE SCHEDULE, AS SOMETIMES HAPPENS WHEN THINGS GET HECTIC. JOBS ARE POSTED IN THREE PLACES, AND WE CROSS-CHECK THEM PERIODICALLY, BUT MIRED AS WE WERE IN THE WINTER DOLDRUMS, WE GOT A LITTLE COMPLACENT AND DIDN'T CATCH THIS ONE. SO WE GAVE HER A LITTLE DISCOUNT, AND APOLOGIZED, THATS ALL WE COULD DO. AS TO THE ANTIQUE DRESSER, A SMALL DECORATIVE PIECE OF MOLDING, PREVIOUSLY BROKEN AND AFFIXED BY MEANS OF A NAIL CAME OFF IN THE TRUCK. WE RESTORED IT TO HER, AND I THINK IT FIT BACK AS BEFORE. I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE END TABLES. I WAS GLAD TO SEE WHERE SHE SAYS SHE MIGHT USE US AGAIN. I CAN'T PROMISE THAT WE WILL NEVER SCREW UP THE SCHEDULE, BUT I CAN SAFELY SAY THAT SHE HAS INOCULATED HERSELF AGAINST FUTURE SCREW-UPS. SHOULD SHE CALL US AGAIN, ALL SHE HAS TO DO IS GIVE HER NAME AND WE'LL PUT IT ON THE CALENDAR IN RED, WITH EXCLAMATION POINTS.
