Budget Right Handyman

I called this company for a quote on 07/21/12 @ 730pm after operating hours and talked for 30 minutes detailing the work I needed done. Tim answered the phone and I asked if it was ok to talk right now and he said "yes, not a problem." I got a fair quote to install new tile and to sand and paint a door for my rental property. He seemed professional and listened to the previous problems I've had with contractors in the past, such as trust and ensured me that I didn't have to worry, that he would take care of me and to trust the company. He said he would call me Monday on 7/23/12 to set up an appointment to start work since that time he would have his appointment book in front of him. Well, he never called, so therefore do not trust this company if they can't even make a promised phone call. That's a big problem with contractors as Tim had already agreed with me that day.

Tim, who gave me the estimate and performed the work, told me it would take three days. He called in help for the masonry to be sure that there were no structural issues. There weren't, and Tim performed the simple tuckpointing well. When it came to the drywall, Tim did the wall and ceiling portions around the chimney well. However, when it came to patching the area left open by the old wall and finishing around the can lights, his work was very sloppy. I chose to pay to have it done because though I could do it myself, I wanted a more professional finish and working right on the spine of the ceiling would have been tricky for me. It was not much better than I could have done myself. The area around the lights still looks awful and I ended up doing a good deal of sanding myself.It was upsetting to me that the first day alone Tim would work for 15-20 min and then go outside to smoke, talk on the phone and alternate between two different kinds of bottled water for the next 20 min. He took 3 or 4 breaks like this in the first 2 hours. I was puzzled. I told him he could smoke on the back porch and bring his drinks inside to cut down on these long breaks and eliminate the need to go all the way down stairs and out to his car. He joked that he needed the 'fresh air'. He did not finish the work in 3 days (which I thought was crazy) and came back in the evening after other jobs to finish free of charge. He seemed so tired he could barely walk these afternoons.More upsetting was that Tim smelled of alcohol every day he was in my house. I will give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that he had been out each of the previous nights, which is none of my business. I do however believe that this very adversely affected the quality of his work. Being aware of this from the beginning, I knew that I could have called the company to complain. I did not. I hoped that he would finish, do a decent job and be gone. I never even contacted the company to rectify the problem and therefore cannot be upset with them. On a personal note, I have a brother who is a handyman and struggles with alcoholism. This personal reason was why I never pursued the matter further.While I wish Tim and Budget Right the best, I will not be using them for any further projects around the house, nor would I recommend them. Having read the company response, I decided to give them another chance several months later. I called the number listed and got the voice mail of the same employee who had done such poor work in my house. I did not leave a message

The handyman, Ken, arrived earlier then expected, called first which was very professional and thoughtful. He was polite and had all the tools he needed to repair the drywall around the windows in our kitchen. He was efficient and thorough. After he cleaned up and let us know what other services they offer. We were very happy and would use them in the future and recommend to friends.

Handyman arrived on time (I forgot his name, but I think he is the owner's right hand man) removed old fixture and replaced/installed new lighting fixture in dining room; he then installed the bookshelves in my office. He did this work in two hours. He was very adept at his job and friendly. He was also very talkative. Maybe a bit too talkative but I enjoy a social handyman. I will definitely use them again.

Marc totally knew what he was doing with everything we asked for & was very thoughtful working around our toddler. We would definitely hire him again!

What a great company with great employees! I found the company on Angie's List and called them on a Saturday asking for the work to be done as soon as possible. The appointment was scheduled the next working day (Monday). Tim, who answered the phone was extremely courteous and was very helpful in getting us set up quickly with a time and day that worked best for me. I was happy that this company set a specific arrival time instead of a "window." Monday, Daniel Perez, the repair person, called a half hour prior to the appointment to let me know that he was running early which worked out great for me. It was so refreshing to have a repair company/person arrive early! He took a look at the job and realized that there were going to be some complications with the existing electrical set up, but quickly figured out a good solution. Daniel ran into a couple of different issues while performing this work and each time he was very efficient in figuring out the best way to work through the problem. He was very knowledgeable, unflustered and thorough. Daniel's attention to detail was especially impressive and he made sure that everything was working properly before he left. Daniel is a true professional! I will definitely use this company again and specifically request Daniel for the job!

Purchased the 2 hours of service for $79 deal to hang a couple blinds and curtains. We are out of the normal service area so we did have to pay the travel charge that was fully explained before we made the purchase. Although I could have done it myself, one of the blinds was 25-30 feet up and I avoid ladders that tall like the plague. Although they did not have a ladder tall enough to get the work done, they did offer to pick one up at the ladder rental store, haul it over here on their truck and return it after they were done. Tim showed up right on time with the ladder, got everything installed and managed to get the ladder back to the store in about 2 hours. His work was top notch and I will definitely be calling them in the future to take on any projects I don't want to tackle. The best part of their service was their willingness to do whatever it took to get the job done at the least amount of expense to me.

Overall - this was a good experience. The low price of $79 for two hours of service was such a steal that before the work was performed I was really hoping that the quality of work was be as impressive as the value of the deal. I would definitely say that this was money well spent. The projects weren't difficult - but I KNEW that these walls were ridiculously hard to drill into from past experience - I needed a professional to do the job right and ensure that whatever I hung up there didn't come crashing down. I was the last job of the day for my handyman but he showed up right on time (That's a huge plus in my book) He was a little sloppy but he did a solid job. He refused to leave after the 2 hours were up until he finished the projects - which I was really appreciative of. I would have insisted that someone come and finish it in the coming days anyway - but I appreciated his dedication and his willingness to think 'out of the box' every time he (literally) ran into a tough spot while drilling through the wall. Solid work - excellent price - polite and friendly handyman. I would happily purchase another one of these deals if permitted to do so.

Never having used handyman services before, I didn't know what to expect. I was very impressed. We had a minor flood in our condo. The insurance company's water abatement team put a rather large hole in our ceiling and pulled out the soaked insulation. We needed our ceiling fixed. I called a contractor, as other work also needed to done, but they charged waaaaay too much. So, I called Budget Right to take care of the insulation and ceiling damage. They answered the phone right away. Scheduling was easy. They had a deal on Angie's List for 2 hours for $79. Also, they have their own coupons that they bring with them. So, I got 9 hours of work for less than $500! Mark, our handyman, came on time and started right away. We picked up materials ahead of time but, not being DIY people, we missed a few things. He went and got what we were missing, then got to work! When I mentioned that I was allergic to insulation, he walled off the area where he was working with plastic so that I wouldn't have to stay outside. When he was waiting for joint compound to dry, he helped us with a room we were painting. Whenever he was waiting for something to dry, he was asking us what he could do to help us. I will definitely use Budget Right again!

I contacted budget right handymen looking for someone to handle regular work for our Condo building. I explained we had two projects that needed to be looked at immediately. Dirk kept pushing time and materials deal that was on Angies List and that they worked on time and materials. Which meant to me when they look at a job, the charge would be time and materials with a 2hr minimum. Dirk then asked what the project were and after explaining them to him, he didn't fully understand. I asked if he could stop by and give an estimate, just like all the other handymen. He said that they work on time and materials, which I then explained it would be best if he could stop by and give us a firm estimate. I told him it should be know that this is how they operate and it would be best to post on Angies list. He got very rude and said they wouldn't do business with us, if we were the last people out their and hung up. I find very odd that somebody can quote a price over the phone with out taking a look at what is needed

They were punctual and completed work on time.

This is the second time that I have used this company and have been very pleased both times. The service man switched out and old dishwasher and put in a different one. When he was there, he noticed that my kitchen faucet had originally been installed backwards, so he took it out and reinstalled it. He was very knowledgeable and very personable. I highly recommendthis company.

EXCELLENT! On time, kept within two hours and had a great work ethnic.

I had purchased the 2-hours of handyman service for $99 deal. The amount of time that these took was actually 5 hours, so I had to purchase more time. I had been advised that might be the case, but I did not expect double the amount of time. The person was polite, and did have to delay another client in order to complete my job, which I appreciated since this is our only full bathroom. I had agreed to purchase the necessary materials, and had to go to the store three times in an attempt to find something that I was told by several local stores Oak Park did not carry due to code restrictions, but that the handyman insisted was required and could be found. Finally the install was complete. Within a few days, the faucet was clearly loose (not due to use), and recently we have discovered that the sink connection often leaks, not always but often, which is a bit confusing. I'm hoping to work with the company to resolve my leaks and no additional cost, but do not plan to use them again for other plumbing needs.

The initial service was great, the representative that was sent did a great job! After the 1st visit which was purchased thru Angie's List I wanted to setup a few more visits however the company never returned my phone calls. I was very frustrated because I spent a lot of time going through all of my projects with the initial rep that visited my home. I wouldn't reccomend them if you need more than 1 visit I guess...

They were prompt and were very congenial and did their work above and beyond what was needed.

All work was done completely and efficiently; excellent service for a property owner. I have had some really bad workers in the past and am thankful that I know through Angie's List I will hire very reliable services.

Dirk sent Dan to do the work.He showed up 10 minutes early and went right to work.Worked quickly and well. Dan told me that he needed various parts for the gates and a new faucet, all of which I expected. He went to Home Depot nearby to pick up the parts and came back quickly. He finished the outside work before the rain started. Then he did the two inside jobs.Everything was finished properly. The gates and the faucet are working better than any time in 12 years we've lived here.The bracket above the faucet is gone.He charged me for the four hours, accepted my Angies List coupon for half of the time and discounted the balance. I paid for the parts.These were small, aggravating jobs that required various skills that I do not have.

Dirk Hoer is his name. Last year, there was a special for $79.99 for up to two hours of handyman service, so I bought the coupon. However, it took me all this time to use it. I called them, and he told me to use the coupon and asked me what I needed done. I explained that I needed a new utility sink, faucet and some new outdoor lights to be put in. He said fine and set up the date. He said that Dan the handyman will be there at 8 o'clock, and he was there at 8 o'clock on the dot in the morning. I gave him a list of what I wanted, and he just went to a store, got it, came back and put the stuff in. He told me that I still had extra time. I told him that I can ask him about a couple of things that I want to have done eventually, so we did that. It was just great. I paid for all the things that he bought; the wash tub, the faucets and the lights. The man who owns the company, Dirk was very cordial, very amenable and easy to work with. This young man who came, Dan had it all done. He asked me not to worry and said that he can take care of that. He didn’t notice ahead of time, but he needed to switch out some connector hoses. So he got on his cellphone and knew where the hardware store was which was three blocks away. He walked down there, got the parts, came back and did the job. I can't think of a complaint, it's all good. Generally when I do have a good experience, I tell other people and then they get on Angie's List. I told other people, and I have also bought gifts for people from Angie's List.

Fantastic! Tim is excellent, and worked to fix small things I wanted adjusted. He was courteous, helpful, ontime, and the end result is wonderful!i wish I had found these guys sooner.

Ken called when he was on his way to let me know when he'd be arriving, offered to take off his shoes, planned the work well and got it done professionally. Very pleasant to have around, I trust him in my home and I felt confident the work was being done well.

Dan was excellent. Top notch. Polite, completely professional, and hard working. I would definitely have him back for jobs big and small. It is hard to find a good handyman and remodeling company and this one is really excellent. Now I know who to call when I have a problem or issue and need help!
