On June 27th I contacted Budget Right to have several items completed in my home. One of which included the install of a screen/storm door. We scheduled the appointment for June 29th. The handyman (Dave) showed up at the scheduled time of 8 am and reviewed what needed to be done. He started on the first task which was the install of the access panel in the basement. That was completed in about 15 mins. Next, he planned to install the screen door. He opened the box took out all the materials for the door and laid them out on the lawn for the install. As he is prepping the door, he informs me that the door is the wrong size and I will need a smaller size. At this point a little over 1.5 hours has passed. He agrees to stop work and return the following day to complete the door install. He calls into Budget Right to okay his decision and let them know that I have used a little over 2 hours of my 4 hours of paid time. Both he and Budget Right agree to allow me to use the rest of my 2 hours the next day to complete the job because the door is the wrong size. At this point no framing for the door as been put up, no millwork has been done, or drilling for installation of any kind. The space is the same as when he first arrived. I return the door that evening only to find out that they do not have anymore of the exact same door by the exact manufacturer in stock. However, they do have a different door that is the size that I need to fit from a different company. I purchase that door and a matching lock for install, because I am told at the store that the door will need a lock and I don’t want to have anymore issues at install. On June 30th Dave from Budget Right returns to install door at 5pm (this is when he said he would return). He starts to install the door and do the necessary millwork to get the door placed. This includes adding a narrow wood bar that runs the length of the door. I agreed to this, because this is something that he mentioned he would need to do with the door from yesterday as well. As he is putting the door up, he does stop to tell me that he is missing the bottom weather stripping for the door. I say that is fine and to continue with the install. He also alerts me that I had a lock in my door assemble and that I didn't need to purchase an additional lock. However, I was missing the handle in the lock kit and he had already started to place the lock that I purchased separately on the door. I tell him to continue with the lock that he has started to put on (it’s dark at this point). At this point we are passed the 2 hours scheduled and I have to pay extra for his time (which I understand). Dave says he having problems with putting the lock on and that it is the wrong lock. I tell him that this is the lock from the same manufacturer as the company and it is the only lock that I have. He agrees to make it work and continues to work by doing some drilling around the door lock area. Now it is close to 9 pm. Around 10pm he says he is done. He opens and closes the door for me, he moves the lock handle for the door, and twists the non-keyed part of the lock to show me that it is working . I hear the lock moving and open and close the door myself also. We go in to sign the work order and for me to give him payment for the additional hours of service. We say goodbye and he leaves. Within a few minutes of him leaving I notice a gap between the top of my door and the frame. By this point he has pulled off. I also lock-up for the evening and realize that my door will not stay locked nor does it it even go into the door latch. It only makes the "sound" as if it is locking. The next day (July 1 ) I call Budget Right let them know about the gap and the non-locking door. They let me know that Dave has jobs scheduled and I let them know that fine, it's the July 4th holiday and if he can't come before July 4th that we can set it up for after. At this point they tell me that Dave will call me to try and set something up and even let me know that he lives in the area so he not far. I do not hear from Dave, but on July 3rd I return home from being out to see a Goodwill Agreement in my door with a note from Dave telling me that I need another part that apparently was not in the assemble (however, he did not make me aware of this on June 30th) and to call him. The Goodwill Agreement says it will give me 30 mins. of man-hour labor. I did not call him that evening due to the holiday. Once the holiday was complete I went to the store where I purchased the door and let them know about the missing piece. They placed an order for it on July 7th and I called Dave on July 9th (not sure about this exact date). I called him again to let him know the piece had arrived and we should set up a date to complete the work. I did not receive a phone call back. After a few more phone calls (w/ messages) and a text sent on July 14th with no response I finally called Budget Right on July 15th. I spoke with Glen who told me that someone had already been out and it was taken care of. I explained to him the narrative that I am giving you now and he said he would contact Dave and get back with me within 15 mins. He did not call back. I called the next day and talked to Glen again and he said he forgot to call me and that he would contact Dave again and call me back in a few minutes. He did not. I called back after a few hours and talked to Glen again and after explaining the situation again he scheduled another Good Will Agreement for July 19th aft 5:30pm for one hour. I repeated this date and time and he said that was correct. On July 19th I called Budget Right just to confirm the appointment time. No one answered, but I left a message. I later saw a missed called with no message and called back. It was the company calling back. I spoke with John at this point who informed me that they had already done two goodwill calls for this issue. I told him that this was not the case and explained the situation once again. He listened and said that nothing could be done because I was missing parts at the install and that was not their fault. I told him again that I was not aware of the missing part and was not notified about it when the work was done. I also let him know that does not solve the issue of the lock not locking. I asked him why did Glen set-up an appointment if it was not going to be honored? He says that Glen did not "confirm" an appointment, but set up a possible appointment and that Glen would have to take it to the owner before it could be scheduled. Glen did this and it was not approved. I told him that has nothing to do with me and that falls on Glen who gave me the appointment and said nothing about having to check to make sure I could get one via approval. At this point I do get a little loud (so does he), but no ill language was used on my part. He continues to say that I signed on the agreement that the work was complete, says goodbye and hangs-up on me. I called back and at this point a got Mark who says he is an owner. I tell him that John hung-up on me and he says that he knows. In fact, he says that he told him to do it because they completed the work. He says he is not coming out because I was missing parts and that they "don't work for free". I tell him that I have paid them for every time they have come out and why are they not honoring the fact that the work will be done correctly? I tell him that is part of their one year warranty and good will agreement that is issued. He says he believes his guys and ends the conversation with "you can just write a negative review" and hangs up. I am very upset with this company. They are making it seem like I am trying to take money from them when in reality I spent $338 dollars to install a door that cost under $170. I am not asking them to do anything more than complete the job and make the door fully operational. I don’t even know if the part I ordered (that they say I was missing) will fix the problem. I have worked with this company before and I had reservations about hiring them again because they were slow to respond to my communications the first time and never felt the issue was truly resolved. However, I needed to get things done around my house and unfortunately I am in a situations where I can't do it myself. I will never use this company again.

Response from Budget Right Handyman
When we mess up a job we take ownership as many of the following reviews will attest to. This is not one of those occasions. We traveled to the South end of Chicago, after hours, in an effort to honor our commitment to install this customers door. When we arrived we had discovered she had purchased a used door with missing parts in order to save a few dollars. Against our advice she had us install the door. Of course the used door fit incorrectly as we had informed her it would. In addition multiple trips were made down to this customers home at no cost to her in an effort to make adjustments to her incorrectly sized door. The real issue here is that this customer wishes us to somehow turn pig skin into satin rather than to admit her error and simply purchase the proper door. Endless badgering over the phone and a nonsensical childlike rant by this individual simply caused us to end the conversation.

It was advertised that they also painted. I asked specifically if the painting could be done and was assured it would. The gentleman showed up a half hour late. I told him what I needed done and he said "I'm not a painter". He also said he would do the painting that just wasn't his forte. The service was time sensitive, so I had him do it. He didn't put down any covering and specks of paint are now on my cherry wood floors and my stairwell. Poor spackle work.

Handyman that was sent here was sick from a cold. Ok, fine. I get it. Ya gotta work to make money even when you're sick, but I worried he wouldn't feel up to par to do a good job. Second, he wasn't prepared for the jobs. He came with a short 3 step ladder. He wouldn't have been able to do any of the work with that. Third, he wasn't experienced in replacing window sills, nor hanging SafeRacks. I didn't want him practicing on me on a day when he wasn't feeling well, so I sent him home.

The guy did a decent job drywalling, but tried to get me to pay him instead of the company. When I spoke to the office, they told me they would mail me a receipt. They failed to honor the Angie's List deal and charged me the full amount of the job, and failed to mail me the receipt to boot. Definitely avoid!

My first experience with Angie's List was a failure. My appointment was for 5pm on Wednesday. I got a call at 4pm from my father that the service guy was there an hour early. When I spoke to Alberto he said that he could start at 5pm, but he could only stay until 5pm. I told him to wait until I got there and then called the company. I spoke to Cooper at 4:02pm and explained the situation. Cooper was very friendly and professional on the phone and said that he would call his worker and have him start the job at 5pm. I called my wife to go over and make sure the worker was not starting any jobs without my instructions. I got a call from my wife saying that the worker had pulled pieces off the backslash saying it was all bad. She again told the worker to Wait until I got to the house. When I got there at 4:45 pm the worker had chipped off a 3"x10' Formica backslash and the 1' trim piece that needed to be glued down was in pieces on the kitchen floor! He said that it was all bad and it all bad and needed to be replaced. I worker kept saying that the whole backsplash was bad and this was the only way to fix it. He said that he was going to Menard's to get the two replacement pieces of Formica. I was horrified when I walked into the kitchen. He had destroyed the backsplash and the top trim and he had his hammer and tools all over the counter top with not protection under them! I told him that I wanted him to wait for me to be there and give him instructions before he started any work. We had an open house scheduled in 3 days, and now I would have a huge project ahead of me before the open house. He then told me that he was leaving to go to Menard's to get the two replacement Formica pieces. I knew it would take over an hour to get to Menard's and back at rush hour, so I offered to go and try to find a replacement. I got him started on another small repair and then went to Menard's. Of course the Menard's Super Center did not have anything similar without replacing the entire counter top. I was able to get some custom matching paint to do a small repair so the kitchen would not look too bad for the open house. On my way back from the store I called Cooper and told him of my frustrations having the worker start before I got home. I told him that I would send him photo of how the counter looked before the worker got there. They then called the worker and then called me back. The owner "Dirk" then got on the phone as was very curt on the phone and just repeated what his worker told him. He would not listen to my side of the story, he just said that his worker was let into the house and a woman gave him permission to start the work. I spoke to my wife and she told me that she specifically asked him to stop and not continue until I got to the home, but he just kept going and pulling the Formica off the counter top. When I tried to tell this to Dirk he cut me off and said that we are done and then hung up on me. I called Cooper back and said that I would be sending him photos of the counter top trim before the work began, Dirk was also on the phone and asked why I was still talking to them. He just kept saying that they were done and his worker better leave my home immediately, he then hung up on me again. The worker Alberto said to my wife and me that it was his fault and he got ahead of himself on this job. He then offered to paint the particle board backsplash with the matching paint. I said Yes and he did a single coat of paint. His cell phone was ringing the entire time that he was painting, but he didn't answer it. Alberto the worker said that the backsplash would need another coat of paint once this dried. He again apologized for ruining the counter and said that he would take a small sample and track down a replacement for us and call back soon. I doubt we will hear back from him. We will probably have to now replace the entire counter top in the kitchen. I called John from Budget Right the next day to let him know what had happened with the repairs, and to see if they would be amiable to fixing our issues. I just started explaining our experience with John and he said that his boss would like to talk to me. I said Ok and then got on the phone with Dirk. Dirk started talking right away. He called me a piece of S*** and then threatened me if I ever locked one of his employees in my home against their will that he would personally take care of me! He then hung-up on me for the third time! That's when I contacted Angie's List with my concerns.
Description of Work: I was looking for a good local Handyman to do some small repairs on my elderly fathers home. I was also looking for someone good that I could use now and in the future. I was excited about finding someone right here in Oak Park. I was going to do a few of these repairs myself but we were running out of time. So I decided to buy this 2-hour handyman special deal on Angie's list and also see if this was a handyman I could hire again in the future to do some bigger projects. We hired Budget Right to repair a small 1" top piece of trim that needed to be glued back down into place. I also wanted them to caulk around a bathroom sink, and repair a piece of wood on the top of a radiator. I set up the appointment with John. He was very friendly and professional. I told him that I was impressed with his companies "A" rating with Angie's List and that he was local from Oak Park. He was honest in stating that they are not from Oak Park and that is just a local address that they use. He also went on to explain that all of their reviews are not "A" reviews and that if they were, then they would not be credible. He said that I should not believe the companies with all "A" reviews. Looking back, I wish I spent more time reading all of the reviews not just the "A" reviews!

I can say there is a good chance that this individual will be sitting in jail on intimidation and false imprisonment charges after our 5'2" service rep was physically blocked from leaving the premises by this very large individual and told to continue working. This unlawful activity took place after I personally informed this individual and my service representative that we would be removing ourselves from this home. As a company and as individuals we all have the absolute right to leave any environment where we feel threatened. In the future local law enforcement will be called immediately and charges filed if exits are physically blocked. Sincerely, Budget Right Handyman Management Team

Purchased a local deal to have some faucets replaced in a new home I purchased. Admittedly, I did have to change the appointment date one time due to scheduling conflicts and the service provider was willing to work with me on this. However, as the appointment date got closer, did not hear from them until the day before when I received a voicemail stating that if I did not respond to them by 12:00 to confirm my appointment, the service call would be cancelled. Fortunately, I was able to confirm the appointment in the time frame they gave me. When the "qualified laborer" (their words) arrived on the appointment date, he had me show him the projects to be completed and said he saw no trouble with completing everything as was expected in my original conversations with the service provider. He excused himself to go get his tools. I watched as he left the house to go to his truck which was parked directly in front of the house. He returned 20 minutes later - now having used 1/4 of the time I had purchased unproductively. He walked into the first bathroom and yells out that he anticipate that this will be a difficult job and it will take him ay least an hour to complete. This is nothing along the lines of what he told me when we did the original walkthrough 30 minutes earlier. He ended up replacing the faucet and drain pipe which is not what I asked for. I only wanted the faucets replaced. The same thing happened on bathroom number two and in the kitchen. By the time the third faucet was replaced, we were just short of four hours of labor and he explains he has a medical appointment (I choose not to repeat why he needed to go to the doctor and frankly, I didn't need to know why either) and he would not be able to finish the last faucet replacement, I would have to reschedule for another time. Items of interest: 1. He had me sign the bill, but he did not leave me a copy. When I called and asked for one, a copy was supposed to be sent but it also never arrived. 2. His work on two faucets was incomplete and I needed to have them looked at by another plumber who I would highly recommend. 3. Each of the individuals providing services for the company are contracted and are not actually employees of the service provider.
Description of Work: Purchased a local deal for two hours of labor during which time the service provider was supposed to replace three bathroom vanity faucets and one kitchen sink faucet. Total time spent on the job was 4 hours and only three of the four faucets were replaced.

This was thru Angie's List deal and it went very well. David arrived promptly and did excellent painting of the wrought iron porch railing/banister which, although not very large, is full of little curlicues, etc., that make painting not easy. He finished almost precisely in the two hours provided the the deal. There were no paint splatters, etc., and he made sure the area was neatly finished. I'm entirely satisfied and expect to use Budget Handyman again.

My mother-in-law hired Budget Right on two occasions -- once Alberto fixed a ceramic tile wall surrounding the bathtub, and this time, Art came to fix two water faucet valves in the basement and outdoors. Art explained to her why one of the valves should not be changed. After replacing the other one, he had used only about 30 minutes of the two hours she had hired him for. Art suggested she should let him know if she had other jobs he could take care of. She came up with a list of several other small things that needed to be done around the house. He completed all of them expertly and professionally, in short order. Through the whole visit, he was very pleasant and accommodating. She will definitely use Budget Right again when she needs a handyman.

These guys are the real deal. Two men showed up on time and were kind enough to remove their shoes upon entering my home. I had a list of tasks prepared in order of priority and they knocked them out one by one after making sure they understood the project and knew what I wanted the end result to look like on the wall (wall gallery). When I came up with a few last minute tasks to have done, a quick call to the office and it was approved that one of the guys could stay on until the work was completed, at the current rate of expense. Everything was really good with this experience and I'll use them again in the future without hesitation!

Everything went well. Alberto was helpful and worked pretty fast.
Description of Work: I got a call the next day to schedule the appointment. They had the time I wanted. Everything was quite easy. Very friendly and helpful. Alberto was easy to work with. I had him help me hang pictures and heavy mirrors. He also helped me moved some heavy items I couldn't do myself. I would certainly use them again and I would recommend highly.

Steve was great. Got here right on time. Efficient and friendly. Had great wisdom about future projects with homeowner tips ("don't hammer copper nails into trees.") He offered to take the table outside to shorten the legs, but we said we could just vacuum. He didn't offer to vacuum for us, which is okay, but we had a little cleaning up to do afterwards in the breezeway (where door handle was replaced) and in the livingroom - (both clearing sawdust from the floor and sofa.) He would have vacuumed if we'd asked. I would hire him again in a second and probably will. The shortening of the table legs was perfect. No wobbling at all! He also liked our dog who has never met a stranger.
Description of Work: Repaired backyard fence. Sawed off table legs (to turn a bar table into a dinner table) and replaced storm door handle. Removed pole hammered into tree (long story.)
