We called Charlie Bosco in early December 2013 based on good Angie?s List reviews. Charlie scheduled a time/day to review our building, got us an estimate via email a couple days later, but said he would not be available to start the work for 4-6 weeks. On Friday, February 7, 2014, Charlie called and asked if he could start our project the coming Wednesday, February 12, or we?d need to wait another month. When Charlie and co-worker arrived on Wednesday at 8am, we admit we were still putting up plastic over doorways and moving clothes and diapers out to the car while Charlie staged his equipment. When Charlie called Friday, he told us we were not going to be able to live on one floor of our 2-flat while the other floor received the work and then switch spaces for work to continue. Yet, when supplying his estimate, Charlie said this would be fine. Earlier Wednesday morning, we also had a meeting with our general contractor that resulted in some trim work repairs in an adjacent room to where Charlie would be working. Unfortunately, I had miscommunicated and did not realize my wife said this work could be done. Maybe 15-20 minutes after Charlie arrived, Charlie comes up to me yelling vehemently, ?I?m done! I quit! I?m walking off the job! ? You just don?t ****ing get it!? Charlie continued to scream while our two small children were present. My wife was holding our 2-year-old daughter who was trembling. We asked Charlie to calm down and talk, but he was adamant, complaining about our lack of readiness, the built in dining room cabinet that was present when he came to give us an estimate, but Charlie claims was built after he submitted his estimate and paying his co-worker to just stand around, etc? After trying to explain the communication error between my wife and general contractor, Charlie proceeded to pack up his materials to leave. I admit to not being 100% ready for Charlie to begin work, but being 90%+ ready, there are many other ways the situation could have been addressed without cursing, including charging us for the possible half hour delay he felt he was incurring. A small credit to Charlie ? later in the day, Charlie did call to apologize. To be clear, we cannot grade Charlie?s work because no plasterwork actually took place. This review is merely a failing grade of Charlie?s attitude for Wednesday, February 12, 2014.
Description of Work: The quick version – Charlie Bosco walked off our job, inappropriately speaking to us and in front of our children as he left. We would not recommend Charlie Bosco at Bosco Plastering. For more detailed info, please read on…

Response from Bosco Plastering Inc
For the first time in my 30 years of work, I did walk off a job. The reason for this was that the owner was unprepared for me to do the job, despite having 7 days notice of the things they'd need to do so I could do the work for them. I was unable to even bring my equipment into their home, because they had a worker in the small, walk-in kitchen that I needed to get through. The owner was aware that I needed to bring in my equipment through the kitchen. This not only caused me a delay on setting up, but would have pushed my time on the job back, resulting in me losing other business because of the delays brought about by the owner's lack of preparation. Again, the owner had 7 days to get this done before I arrived, and chose to start the preparation the moment I arrived. I concede that I used some curse words, but I never aimed them at the owner, his wife, or their children. I was unaware that the children were even around, and once I did, I apologized for my choice of language. In 30 years of doing this work, I have never had an issue like this before, that caused me to walk off a job. I appreciate the owner acknowledging their role in this isolated incident, but I cannot have my business effected in a negative way from customers not doing the basic preparations that they had a week to get done. I also never stated that the owner and his family would have to leave their home and move between floors while I worked. That was never necessary for the work that was required, and again, I never stated anything about the owners needing to leave their home. In closing, I'd like to again state that I did apologize to the owner, called again to express my regret over my reaction, as the owner acknowledged. This is an isolated incident, and I assure you that the other reviews are a much better indication of my work ethic, and the quality of work I do.

Charlie was fantastic - very friendly and very knowledgeable. He advised us regarding various options and did not hard sell or try to up sell. The work he did looks great and I would not hesitate to use him again or to recommend him highly to anyone else who needs plastering work done.

After we got our house rewired, we were left were quite a few significant holes in our plasterwork that needed to be patched. In addition, our house was built in 1898, so there were some other plaster condition issues that needed to be addressed. Charlie was very prompt about coming out to give an estimate and upfront that it would be 4 weeks before he could start on our job. I appreciated that he did not try to up sell us on any work and even talked us out of skim coating a closet, since it didn't seem worth the extra money and effort since it is, after all, just a closet. He was very good about communicating when he and his crew would be showing up and showed up on time. He was very respectful of our house and did not get plaster where it shouldn't be (as much as can be expected). The patching and skimcoating was seamless and looks beautiful. He even patched up a crack or two that were not on his list. My one complaint would be the plaster was not as uniform as it could have been where it met up with baseboards, but our house is not terribly well light and it was in winter, so I think it was difficult to see. It was also easily touched up with a little joint compound. Overall, they did a great job and I would happily hire them again.

Can't tell you too much. All I can tell you is he said he would be there in the morning. He did not show. I called to see if he was running late or some other kind of problem. Charlie is a true professional, and is skilled at plaster work. Very impressive, high quality work. I also like the fact that Charlie did the work, and didn't have a big crew of subs that came in to hang drywall, sand, etc. I would recommend Charlie to anyone who has plaster repair projects, his attention to detail was awesome, he did a great job.

He arrived on time, did the work expeditiously, and it's been over a half year since the work was done and it's held up well. No complaints.
Description of Work: I have a 60 year old ranch style home in the western suburbs and we had rain damage due to a leaky roof that was long ago repaired. But we didn't have the plaster damage in the 2 adjoining bedrooms fixed for years. The adjoining wall separating the 2 bedrooms had damage as well as the ceiling in the 2 rooms. We got several estimates from A rated companies on Angie's List and chose Boscoe's.

Bosco moved the furniture out of the room he was working on and kept the place clean despite working with plaster. The sagging plaster was secured with wire mesh that was firmly affixed to the ceiling joists, permitting Bosco to plaster over a secure base. He did a great job, even with the cove ceilings in both rooms. The rooms have a luminosity to them now. Its 5 years now since he did the work and it still looks beautiful.

We needed the ceiling and two walls done, but had him do the whole room and we are delighted with the results. It's been over a year and the walls still look as I imagined they did in the 1920s. Charlie was prompt in returning calls, made good on his promises for follow-ups, and was very prompt. I wish I would have found him years ago. We imagined that we would have dust everywhere, as that had been our experience when we had some work done previously by another contractor. Charlie and crew were the cleanest contractors we have ever had do work in our building.
Description of Work: If you want to give your old plaster walls a new lease on life, call Bosco Plastering. We have a 1920s era two flat and the walls in the living room of our apartment were showing their age. I thought we might need to cover them with drywall, but the estimates for drywall were not a good solution for retaining the look of our nice crown molding. Charlie gave us an estimate for putting up mesh and skim coating the walls that was cheaper than any of the estimates for drywall.

After removing canvas and wallpaper from the walls in our house, we found that the underlying plaster needed to be touched up -- covering cracks, smoothing out the surface for painting, repairing some damaged areas. We called Charlie and he gave us a room-by-room estimate, which was very helpful so we could decide which rooms to do now according to our budget. He was honest and straightforward - no pressure. The cost is significant, but we felt it was worth it because he clearly knows his craft and knows old houses, and we learned new information about our house from him. He did a fairly complicated crown molding removal and ceiling repair job in our dining room to return it to its original look. We ended up having him skim coat the walls in about half the house, and we will certainly call him to do the rest in the future. He did the work himself with one colleague, and they arrived promptly each morning and were very professional and courteous.

Description of Work: Charlie is wonderful! He came to my condo to fix two water damaged areas of my ceiling. He was professional with the estimate, and the visit. He was on-time, courteous and took great care to make sure no damage was done to my condo. Once he started the work, he found the leak causing the damage was still active, and he provided excellent advice and assistance with next steps to take. He went out of his way to describe the process and show me the areas of concern in the ceiling. I fully intend to use him for all of my future plaster repair needs and would highly recommend him!!

Charlie and his helper were on-time both days and got the work done promptly and with excellent quality. The one quibble I have is that I had to contact Charlie a couple times after I had received his estimate and I accepted it and the time that the work was scheduled. Charlie had told me that he could do the work in about a month after I accepted his quote and I waited 5 weeks before contacting him because I hadn't heard back from him. He then told me he'd schedule me in about a week's time. After a week's time, I called again as I hadn't heard from Charlie. But then I got him to schedule the work. But this is, overall, a quibble. I would still highly recommend Charlie and believe that he performed very good work.

The leaks had been fixed two or three years ago, ,but I hadn't had the plaster damage repaired. Then I applied to refinance my mortgage. Needless to say, fixing the plaster was required for the refi and time was of the essence. Charlie came to give me an estimate the same day I called him and did the work the next day! (Fortunately he had a down day before the start of a big project; otherwise, it would have been at least two weeks before he could have done the work.) Charlie and his colleague arrived promptly at 8 AM and were done before noon. They cleaned up well, and I was surprised at how little plaster dust there was to deal with. The workmanship is excellent and the plaster has cured well. They didn't mind one of my cats supervising.

Charlie came out timely to provide an estimate. He explained to me the damage that had been done by the leaky bricks and the best way to repair it. My house was built originally with plaster and lathe so I was happy to be able to make the repairs using the same style of work. Charlie suggested that I have a carpenter look at the window frame too because of the water damage and he suggested a carpenter. I choose a starting date and coordinated the project with Charlie and the carpenter. The plastering was perfect! I am very happy with the results and will use Charlie's services again.
