The Besco workers came around 8:30 in the morning. They went up to the roof and cut the pipe off so that it vented straight up. They were done in less than a half hour. The cost was less than the estimate. After several months of cold weather, we have had no ice build up on the roof. The problem has been resolved.
Description of Work: We had a problem with the exhaust vent from our high efficiency furnace. The vent goes through the roof and was set up such that the water would drip from the vent pipe and cause ice to form on the roof during the winter months. Besco suggested that the vent pipe be cut back so that there was not a long run over the roof. They sent out two workers to do the job.

BESCO has provided us with prompt, courteous service for a second time now. Technician Gregg was polite and efficient. Furnace blower motor and capacitor were replaced at a price right in line with my expectations. When I had a question regarding the bill, owner Jim addressed my concerns in a thoughtful and professional manner. I will definitely continue to use this company again in the future.

We had a great experience with Besco Air, Inc. The workers were punctual, pleasant, professional, and fast. They explained in detail the work they were doing, patiently answering any of our questions. Joe Pedota, a Besco Air, Inc. representative, remained very active before, during, and after our project, coming to our house on more than one occasion to make sure all of our questions were answered and that we were satisfied with all of their improvements. He made sure we understood our furnace and air conditioning options prior to our project, checked in during the project, and then walked through our basement, (re-) explaining all the updates after the installation. Additionally, Besco Air, Inc. was very accommodating when scheduling appointments and with additional duct work that was not a part of our original contract.

I interviewed and got quotes from 5 different companies for the replacement of our dead a/c unit and our outdated inefficient furnace. I wanted it done before years end to take advantage of both the federal tax rebate and the People's Gas rebate. General conversation is pretty much just that-'General' as each company tried to sell me their services & equipment. There were two deciding factors that helped me make my decision to go with BESCO; #1 the brand of equipment-Rheem & #2 the knowledge and professionalism of the salesman; Joe. I was very impressed at what Joe commented on when he looked at my current set up, especially the parts of my current system that were initially installed incorrectly. He took his time and explained EVERYTHING about both the operating functions of both pieces of equipment and the governments efficiency rating program. He didn't try to sell me the most expensive equipment but gave me options that fit well with the layout of my home. His installers came EXACTLY at the time he said they would begin and worked the exact amount of time he estimated the project would take. The 2 men were professional, hard working and worked clean and also did a good job of cleaning up after themselves when the work was complete. It was a COLD day and these guys didn't slow down once. My membership with Angie's List paid for itself with this project. We spent a lot of money and having the accreditations/recommendations of BESCO provided by Angie's List gave us a 100% more confident feeling when committing to this project. Then when the end result is what was better than expected, it was a HUGH sigh of relief. There are SOOOO MANY different type of contractors out there that prey on the uninformed/untechnically educated consumers that horror stories are a VERY common occurance and I can't tell you how happy I am that I wasn't one of those stories. Not only do I personally recommend BESCO Heating & A/C but will definitely use them again on other projects for my home.

We initially conctacted 4 HVAC companies to quote on having a new system installed in our attic and also fix our existing system for our home. The installation of the new system would be difficult because the succesful comapny would need to come out and install the duct work and part of the mechanical system and then would they would have to return a number of months later after the subflooring was installed to complete the job. Before making a decision we met multiple times with each potential vendor to insure that each one understood what we were looking for. Not only did Besco Air (Joe Pedota) come in with the low bid; they did a great job of communicating with us during the process, and they actually finished the first phase of the installation ahead of time. After the subflooring was installed, almost 5 months later they came back out as agreed and completed the installation without any issues. Besco operated professionally and dilligently and we would recommend them to anyone looking for a quality HVAC provider.

We smelled gas in our house so we called People's Gas, who traced the problem to a problem with our furnace. It was probably 3:45 PM when I turned to Angie's List to find a heating service company I could call for immediate help. Andy at Besco took my call, didn't think he could squeeze me in during regular business hours but thought he could get someone to my house after hours tonight - and said he'd call me back. He called me back 5 minutes later to say that yes, someone could come today - and maybe even within the hour. 45 minutes later, Greg appeared at my door, ready to go to work. A little over an hour later, my furnace has been cleaned, repaired - and is back in working order. There is still a little follow-up work to be done on my humidifier, but so far, I am pleased with the whole experience, happy my house doesn't smell like gas, and glad the heat is back on :-)

After Besco's 1st visit, which was just to perform an annual boiler maintanence service, we experienced issues we never had before (mentioned above). I called Besco and the receptionist was wonderful in respecting the situation and having someone come out within hours. The second visit resulted in an estimate for additional work at a cost. No corrections were made. A week after that, our pilot light went out. I found a knowledgeable technician that has been industry his entire career. He was able to correct and explain what caused the issues we experienced. Of them, the pressure guage was adjusted to be over 10 lbs of pressure, which is significantly more than it should be! Another was a possible oversight (when replacing the thermocouple the degraded connection to the gas valve would have been apparent and replaced). Besco also did not clean the glass guage that allows us to view the water level, which is imparitive to owner maintence. Besco's owner confirmed they will not clean the glass. When speaking with the owner after the boiler was fixed, I understand why we hired Besco in the first place - it was his professionalism. I respect him trying to resolve and better this situation. He cares about his employees and his customers, and manages to stand by them both.
Description of Work: 1st visit = Annual check-up which included cleaning the grates and replacing the thermocouple. 2nd visit = Evaluate and correct issues that were caused by the first visit, which were: water linking from a radiator, water linking from the boiler, and an incredible amount of noise and whistling from the radiators.

Baethke and Deljo both reported my heat exchanger was bad and that I needed to replace my entire furnace. Besco was willing to replace my heat exchanger for a lower cost than replacing my furnace. In performing the work, Jim reported that, actually, my heat exchanger was perfectly fine and this work was unnecessary--much less replacing my entire furnace. Jim found the real source of the issue and fixed that, and Besco worked with me so that I didn't have to pay for a heat exchanger I didn't need. Two negatives: --Demeanor. Serviceman Jim, while he took care of me, was openly complaining about the work at hand, and generally was a bit gruff. --Organization. The agreed timeline for the reimbursement of my money for the second heat exchanger was also not adhered to, and it actually was more than 2 months before my money was refunded.

HI Member, I'm sorry you felt Jim was a bit ruff and maybe he was having a bad day, which isn't your fault. He is the most requested service tec I have, so I know it must have been a bad day for him. As far as the refund I will say that was our fault due to your heat exchanger sitting in our wharehouse for to long and then waiting for Goodman to get back to us on the reimbursement of the money. If there is anything I can do please let me know. Jim Cox

Last year I called Besco to schedule a service call; my appt. was scheduled in the morning. They were late and I was upset because my time was tight. The repair man arrived and did the service I had requested. At the end of his visit I bought a service contract which offered savings, and included a follow up visit for the next season. Here are the two things that impressed me most. 1. I received a follow up call from the owner a day or two after the first visit to apologize for the confusion on the appointment time. He explained that the woman who did the scheduling was out on leave and he said they were having a hard time without her at work. 2. In the summer when I had not called to schedule the service call for my AC (which I had already paid for under the contract) they called me and left me several reminder messages through the summmer I plan to buy another service contract - I think it was money well spent and I loved thier customer service.
Description of Work: This summer I had the AC checked and serviced (albeit a tad late in the season), and last fall I had the heating unit cleaned and serviced.

The motor on our furnace, which also runs our central air, had died. I called to get an estimate on repairing it. Due to the age of the furnace (50 yrs) and expense of repairing the motor (about $1,500) the salesman recommended getting a new furnace. After describing different types of furnaces I selected one, but wanted to be sure that it was the proper size. The salesman had left and I called the company about it. I was impressed that the owner, who was on his way to another appointment, did stop by to measure the house so as to be able to recommend the proper size. They arrived promptly the next day and had installed it by the end of the day. Included with the furnace was a new thermostat. The worker said that someone would come the next day to finish programming it. I said that I would prefer not to pay the whole bill until that was accomplished (I was willing to pay most of it), having experienced someone promising to come back and never seeing him again. After talking to the owner the worker was able to arrange for the thermostat to be programmed that day. This is a little more of a general comment when buying a furnace. I've found it to be noisier than our old one; and I'm not sure if there is a way to know that up front, but I would have liked one quieter.

Our old furnace was beginning to leak carbon monoxide and our old chimney had been leaking rain water, so after collecting bids to replace both the furnace and water heater, I chose BESCO because they were a) knowledgeable, b) carried quality lines, c) addressed all of my questions and concerns, and d) were competitive. After the high efficiency furnace and water heater were installed and vented out a side wall, we had our roofer remove the old smoke stack, then patch and shingle over the smoke stack hole in the roof, eliminating our water issue. Two weeks after the work on the furnace and water heater were completed, our AC compressor totally failed. BESCO was at our house the next day, and installed a new compressor along with coils the following day at a competitive price. I've been around construction in various ways for much of my life, and following our experience with these guys I'd recommend them to anyone.

The second service call turned the minor problem of a slight water leak into a major setback of a totally inoperable water heater. Furthermore, the technician left unattached cooper tubing lines because the stem of the water heater was destroyed and the lines could not be connected back and thus I was unable to use even my cold water. The next morning, I spoke with Jim, the owner of Besco. He informed me that I could send the tank back to Burnham and if the defect was a manufacturing issue, Burnham would replace the tank. I express my concern that after the removal of the connections from the water tank, there was no evidence of a crack and it appeared as though the damaged was from the service call. Jim came to my home with a service technician in order to assess the damage for himself and appeared noticably worried by the fact that his company had indeed complicated the situation by the quality of work performed on their part. He tried to rectify the situation by discussing the problem with a sales representative, whom he had a working relationship with, and discovered that it was a documented problem and the tank would be replaced for free under warranty. Jim told me it would be 1 week before the water tank would be available because it had to be shipped from the supplier. He suggested that I pay $2500 to have him install a similar type of heater if I want to have an immediate replacement. Obviously sinces price was an issue, I told him that I would wait for the replacement tank and hoped something could be done in the interim to correct the fact that besides no longer have hot water, I was unable to run my cold water due to the uncapped piping. He sent a repairman to put a stopvalve on the exposed piping so that I was able to have cold running water for the week. I called Jim at Besco the following Monday to get an idea of what it would cost to install the new water heater, he did not have the information handy and told me that he would give me the pricing later. Since I had the time, I received quotes from other companies so a had a ballpark figure to compare the pricing. I called Jim on Thursday, May 27, to check on the status of delivery and cost for installation. He returned my call and let me know the tank was in and it was cost approximately $900-1100. to install. I felt the estimate was high compared to other bids and expressed my concerns. He gave me the option of picking up the tank from Angler, the distributer for this part in Chicago and having another company install it. I was told that I needed to pay $150. for delivery charge and $150. for the installation of the stop-valve done the previous week before he would release the tank. I tried to dispute the $150. stop-valve installation charge because if the heater had not been broken during the service call, I would not have requires this work. He replied that he did not charge me for the service call which left the water heater totally inoperable which seems like standard practice since the company actually only made the problem worse. I also question the $150 for delivery because he said the tank was covered under warranty and he did not mention the additional charge till that day.I have since spoke with Burnham hydronics and was told that there was no delivery fee associated with the tank since it was covered under warranty. As long as the original tank was returned, the charges to Angler would be credited. I had to drop the existing tank off at Angler before I was able to obtain the new tank, so there should have been no issue with the old tank being returned. As far as I can determine, the delivery charge of $150 never existed and the company lied in order to still collect money for a problem that was due to their negligence The existing tank was serial#64301064 and the replacement was model#AL50SL serial#051040756 from Burnham in Lancaster, PA. Although my water tank would have needed to be replaced eventually, the service provided by Besco Air left me stranded with no hot water for over a week and took away the option of exploring options available for me. I was not satisfied with service provided by Besco Air and question their honesty related to charges in this case.
Description of Work: My indirect-fired water heater was continually discharging hot water from the relief tubing. On Mon.,May 17, I called Besco to correct the problem. The serviceman replaced the T&P/relief valve and it seemed to correct the issue. On Thurs,May 20, my husband notice a small amount of water accumulating at the base of the heater. A serviceman came out to inspect the problem. He felt that there was a crack on the stem of stainless steel tube that extended out the top of the water heater tank. He felt he should removed the copper tubing that connected to the stainless steel stem so that that the stem could then be removed from the tank and replaced. Unfortunately, he damaged the threads and crushed the top of the stainless steel stem when removing the copper connection and then realized that the stem was one continuous piece of the tank and could not be removed or replaced.

They were great. I got quotes from multiple companies and all were very close. Joe @ Besco did a great job explaining what size he recommended and why. He also discussed where to locate the new outside unit, its physical size, what additional equipment would be needed and even noticed that my waterheater vent was not installed correctly, which they fixed for free. They definitely believe an informed customer is the best customer. They explained to me things the other A/C companies left out and made sure I knew exactly what to expect. So the day of the install was a breeze because nearly everything was already decided. They were able to do the installation with less than 2 days notice. The installers showed up on time and got all work done. After installation, they explained everything they did and even made suggestions on economical air filters. A great experience.

On a hot Sunday afternoon, the outdoor condenser fan was stuck, the unit was making a strange noise and the unit was hot. I called and within ten minutes a technician called back. He instructed me over the phone in an attempt to get the fan unstuck which would have led me to a no cost solution. It didn't work, so he carefully explained that he could come out that evening for a fee, or the following Monday morning for a lesser fee , but if he didn't have the right part, there would be an extra fee if he had to come out on two separate days (likely since the parts supplier would be closed on Sunday). I chose Monday and he was right on time Monday morning. He was able to get the blade unstuck which would have limited the repair cost to under $100, but he explained possible potential problems with the fan motor since it wasn't clear how long I had been running the system with the fan stuck. He didn't pressure me. Like the initial phone call, he laid out my options and the potential cost. Because I didn't want to have to deal with the future annoyance of an air conditioning problem on most likely the hottest day of the year when everybody is looking for immediate service, I went ahead and had the fan motor replaced and opted (again, my choice) for a Clean and Check. My system passed muster and once again I am very happy with this company. As far as price...in general I'm a firm believer in 'you-get-what-you-pay-for and there are certainly some companies that might come in cheaper, but in this 'time-is-money' society I understand the 'nickel-and-dime-we-charge-for everything' mentality I sometime run up against. I'm fine with all of that as long as it's made clear to me up front what those charges might entail. What I really appreciate about this service call was how clear the fee structure was explained to me up front, plus the attempt to have me try something which would have resulted in no charge whatsoever if it had worked. I've used this company before for both heating and air conditioning and will continue to give them my business because of this last experience.
