Avondale Roofing was wonderful! They came right out, and they took the time to explain that the type of skylight I have is incorrect for my home. It will always leak, and I’ll eventually need to have it replaced. This information is true, and I’ll hire them for the replacement sometime in the future. Their repair work was well done, and my skylight has stopped leaking for the moment.

I had used Avondale before on a small project at another property, so I thought I'd give them a call before anybody else when looking to replace the roof on my house. The rep showed up at the agreed time to do the estimate, and said he'd have it for me at the end of the day and no later than the next morning. After that, I was out in the breeze. I heard nothing for 10 days and I called their main number and was given the rep's direct cell number. I called his cell 4 separate times, never got an answer, and had to leave messages. As bad luck would have it, the two times he called me back I was at work. 3 weeks went by with a bad game of phone tag and it seemed as though they just didn't want my business. I wasted a good chunk of time based on a smidgen of loyalty. I called 5 other local roofers and had a range of estimates in 3 days.

They were very professional and did exactly what they said they were going to do. They were so efficient that they finished sooner than I expected them to. They had a great crew, they were easy to work with. We had a complete tear off and I was amazed that they got all the stuff cleaned up before they started putting shingles on. It's a great company to work with. The price was exactly what they quoted me.

I have never before been motivated to submit a report, although I frequently use Angie's List recommended providers. But when one hires a top rated company and spends over $12K on a major project, one expects service better than I got. Matt was the estimator and was very accommodating with price and agreed to honor an estimate he gave me a year ago. The office also was most helpful in scheduling. But once Matt became the "project supervisor," he did not seem to have all the answers. He did not know when the siding/gutter guys were starting or what their schedule was and never got back to me when I asked questions about this. The siding material was not in stock, a fact that they did not notice until after the work had started, so we had to wait. The gutter/siding guys worked intermittently over several days, starting mid-morning and stopping midday a few times. I am not sure if they were working another job at the same time or just taking their time, but it seemed to take longer than it should have. But all of the above comments are no big deal and alone would not raise my ire. After the roofing was completed the cleanup was less than stellar (left debris around the entrance porch and driveway). Most companies pledge "broom clean" and this was not. So just as the siding/gutters were coming to completion I called Matt and told him to please make sure that the cleanup of this phase was better. The siding and gutters were done by a completely different crew. I specifically asked that they pick up all their cigarette butts since I have small children running around. After they left, I not only had dozens of butts all around the yard and next to the deck, but I had to pick up dozens of sharp, small objects in the driveway and the yard. These included nails, screws, small pieces of gutter coil and very sharp shards of aluminum scrap. Besides just leaving behind a mess, these objects posed a significant hazard to children, barefooted people of all ages come next summer, and car tires. I was appalled at the unprofessionalism. I called to complain and they sent out two men to clean up again, but even they were unable to get everything, try as they did. While raking leaves yesterday, I had to pick up butts, pieces of plastic, and small scrap in the yard. I suspect that the siding/gutter guys were sub-contracted by Avondale, but this does not absolve them of responsibility. As for the quality of the work, only time will tell. The only part of the job that I can see up close is a coating of silver sun-reflecting material over the bitumen roof just below the dormer windows, and it appears to my untrained eye to be applied haphazardly and messily. If any problems develop over time with workmanship, I will return to report again.

horrible. The original quote was for $7600. According to the owner the salesman had misquoted. However, we had already signed the contract at that price - they called us the next day after accepting the 1/2 payment. They threatened legal action against us if we did not accept the higher bid at 8,200 ( additional 600) which would then be at cost for them (according to them). Their salesmanager even made a veiled threat to my wife that this additional amount wasn't "strong arm tactics" that it would be like "tearing off the roof and not finishing the job". We had other bids, but obviously this was the cheapest and they already had our credit card information. We scheduled an additional meeting with the owner Jaye to discuss the new contract at 8,200. She indicated at that meeting (with her sales manager Tom there) that any materials left would be ours (just in case shingles fell off or whatever) and that there would be no hidden fees - so they could not jack up the price with additional boards above $100. Then we received the Angie's list coupon book for september - and used their own coupon of $259 to off set the additional $600 we had to take. So we instead of paying 8,200 we paid 7941. Jaye called my wife and really yelled at her that they would not accept this coupon and that this was a "slap in her face". She threatened legal action against us again, and my wife stayed firm that we paid our bill. They just sent us a bill (minus the two checks for the total amount of 7941) for $259 that we have to pay in 30 days or they will start to charge us 2% every month here after. Help!

Response from Avondale Roofing Inc
We hired a new estimator in early July 2010, after 2 weeks of training he went out on his own. The member's evaluation and proposal was one of his first solo attempts. He provided the member's with a proposal for $7,600.00 to tear off the roof for the house with attached garage and bay window roof. The members admittedly jumped on the project, as the member told me, they had received several estimates from different companies over the course of several months. They also gave us a credit card number for 1/2 down on the project, which we NEVER put through at any time. As the paperwork for the office was being prepared by our new estimator, he noticed an addition error of over $2,000.00. He contacted the members immediately to let them know ofthe error (before the project was even scheduled for installation). Understandably, the members were quite upset and I assume thought that Avondale was trying to pull the wool over their eyes. Our Sales Manager was also informed of this error and he contacted the members as well. Our price should have been $10,292.00 to do their project. The members said it was our mistake and that we should have to do the project at our original price of $7,600.00. They stated they would take us to court if we didn't perform to our original contract. I was in California at the time and was contacted by our sales manager. I told him to contact the members and adjust the contract to $8,200.00 (to cover our material & labor costs only!) which sounded like a "win-win" situation to me ...and we were still well under the price of all their other proposals that they had received. We made an HONEST mistake and contacted the customer right away. The members only wanted to deal with me, so when I returned from California a couple of days later, I contacted them. We discussed the project by phone and came to the understanding that we would do the project at our cost of $8200.00 and the members accepted. I made an appointment to meet her at her home in Gurnee with a new proposal; which she signed. Knowing, once again, that we were doing this at our cost and NOT a penny of profit. We started the project as scheduled and received a 1/2 down payment of $4,100.00 by check. The project took two days to complete. Avondale was also short on material approx. 600 square feet due to the estimator. I understand that this is NOT the member's concern, nor did we ask them to deal with this issue ...but instead of breaking even we lost $423.00 to do this project. Upon completion we contacted the members to schedule their final inspection and to collect final payment due on the project. We had a date scheduled and were then contacted by the members that they could not make this and the inspection was. rescheduled for several days later. When our project manager arrived, he was shown some small issues about 2 shingles sticking up and some magnetic sweeping to be redone. The balance owed on the project was $4100.00. Our project manager received a check for $3841.00 and a Angie's List coupon for $259.00 off any project over $2500.00. Under normal circumstances, we would...have honored the coupon, but ...since the customer was aware that they were getting this project done at our COST, and NO profit (due to our math error) I would not accept the coupon. I called the member and explained the situation and told her that the coupon states that it is NOT valid with any other offer and she had received quite the offer of having her roof done at COST (besides Avondale losing the $423.00 for additional material) and I thought that this was unfair of her. She told me she would speak with her husband and call me back. This was on September 18, 2010. I never received the courtesy of a phone call back from her until I sent her a letter on October 4,2010, stating that unless we received a phone call by October 11, 2010 advising us when we can expect the outstanding payment of $259.00, that Avondale intends to place a lien on her property. I believe that this customer is trying to take advantage, knowing full well that we did this project at cost and CAN'T accept the Angie's List coupon. Sincerely, Jaye E. Gave us a quote and said it would be 3 weeks. I called back and they said they would fit us in Friday. They never called or showed up. I waited and then called at end of they day. They said a job went long and could not get to me. All they needed to do was call me to let me know. When I called she said they would only try and were too busy! I think they would do good work, but really poor scheduling. We used another company that did a great job.

Very efficient crew. Started at 730AM and was finished and cleaned up by 4PM. Had to replace 5 sheets of plywood decking due to ice dams that damaged the roof deck. The cleanup was very quick. They delivered a dumpster to the site at 7AM the morning the work started and they removed the dumpster at 11AM the next morning. The new roof looks great and the facia and gutters are beautiful. The new vents in the soffits have made a real difference in the airflow in the attic. Great company to deal with and great work. Will definitely use them again in the future.

A few companies came to look at the job and we chose Avondale. The gutters had partially separated and the wood had rotted in her attic. The gutter had completely separated, it was winter and there was snow. It was partially insulation work, too. They had it fixed in a day, it was fantastic. I think they are definitely professional and they were willing to come out even though the weather was bad. A couple of the other places we called, including the original person who did the work, I think didn't want to get on scaffolding in the cold. They are a known name and a known entity, they have a reputation and they definitely up hold it. I thought the price was great and they came out right away. We will probably look to have some roof repairs this summer and we will probably call them.

The first crew came out and completed the job within a few hours and I went up on the roof to inspect their job. They hadn't installed any protection above the cap as the liner was sticking out with a 2" gap space between the liner and cap. When I asked about this, the lead worker (not Leo) said he would be back to fix it later. A few days passed and I came home to find several empty tubes of calk in my garbage. I went up to look at the chimney and noticed that the worker had merely caulked the 2" gap like one would ice a birthday cake. I also noticed that some of the bricks had chipped and were cracked. Shocking for a week old chimney! I was unhappy and called the main office. I want to say that the main office was always sympathetic and responsive to all of my concerns. They sent out a crew to cut out the 'bad' bricks, and repoint the new bricks. They also brought over a metal cover and ceramic pipe to cover and protect the exposed liner. They also cemented the gap after removing the caulk. All was well until two months later when I was again on the roof (for a different unrelated reason) and noticed more chipping and cracking in other bricks. I called the main office and Leo came over, evaluated the situation, and chose to tear down the new chimney and rebrick it with different brick and a mortar that is appropriate for the chimney (not too stiff as the old mortar was stressing the brick, as per Leo). Leo finished the job, cleaned the roof of cement and debris, and cleaned the gutters (something that the original team did not do). While Avondale eventually made good on every problem free of charge, I just felt that I was lucky they were willing to fix their problems. They get points for eventually fixing the job, but loose more for the general lackluster experience for creating a needlessly stressfull situation. That is why when I recently replaced my roof and gutters, I chose not to even call them for an estimate and went with an Angie's list company with excellent results.
Description of Work: We had purchased our home the previous fall and found a roof leak related to the chimney. We called three different firms for estimates and Avondale came in the most reasonable. The original 1926 leaky and cracked cinderblock chimney was to be taken down to the roofline, rebuilt with common brick, capped with a custom cement cap, and flashed with some surrounding roof tiles replaced. Leo came out for the estimate.

Did not get an opportunity to even find out if they would do the work for me.
Description of Work: Chris Schwartz from Avondale Roofing came to give me an estimate for a new roof. During the meeting, he mentioned that because of the height, pitch of my roof, and closeness to the house next door, the company may not be able to do the work. Before sending out a quote, he wanted to have a foreman look at the job and give an opinion. A few days after meeting with Chris, he called to say the foreman would be seeing it in the next couple of days and then he would get back to me with a quote. I never heard from him again. I understand that they might not have been able to do the job, but why go to the effort of contacting me twice and then not giving me a courtesy call to say they can't do the work. I had been given Avondale's number by a friend, who will know that this is how they did business.

Overall went great, installed insulation and baffles. I already consulted avondale on another roof issue, and would use again for any roofing needs.
Description of Work: We had major problems with heat loss and icicles last winter. Matt came out and explained that our insulation was not up to today's standards and parts of roof were not insulated at all. He carefully explained what was going on, and suggested that improving our ventilation and insulation would improve our bills, and big icicle problem we had. We had several other offers, and Avondale's was at least 900 dollars cheaper with more insulation. The install process went real smooth, and the guys were great. No mess, no nothing.
