Technician arrived on time and went above and beyond to explain exactly what he was doing, why he was doing it and how it would effect the long-term operation of the unit. Did not attempt to sell me anything more than I had already paid for and went out of his way to attempt to remedy a small issue without any additional charges. Technician was friendly and knowledgeable, would absolutely use them again.

Everything went according to plan, except somehow the electrical shorted and our Nest monitoring system was fried. The contractor was great - he went to Best Buy and bought a new one to replace it for us. Very smart move.
Description of Work: We were getting ready to sell our condo and wanted the HVAC system to be in perfect order for handing over to the new owner. The contractor conducted the annual service on the system.

I thought they were good and they did a good job. I enjoyed working with them. They were on time and they gave an estimate. Actually the price matters a lot for me so I picked them firstly because they had a good price. Overall I've got a good impression on them.

We *thought* we had no issues until a heavy rain last night and into this morning. That's when we discovered that during the removal of our old boiler, the installers had opened a drain cap in our basement and DID NOT CLOSE IT FULLY. 4" of water and hours later (not to mention a missed day of work), we're almost dry after discovering All Temp's mistake. We've used them in the past and have been satisfied with their service, but they get a big fat F for professionalism for this "tiny" but costly mistake. Not sure what they can do to make this right. Just wanted to warn others to check the work before assuming, as we did, that anything opened would be closed, etc.

Our central AC replacement went very well with All Temp! It was a very hot couple of Summer days while they were here in our attic replacing our 40 year old central AC unit. The crew was very professional and experienced in central AC replacement. It took them two days to complete the project. They were very easy to work with and we were very pleased with their completed work. The AC unit cooled the house down immediately. We have used All Temp for many years. A friend recommended them to us when we moved into Portage Park over 12 years ago. They replaced our boiler about seven years ago. Both our new boiler and AC units are running beautifully and we only see All Temp when we need routine annual service maintenance. Thank you, All Temp!

Spectacular. See above.
Description of Work: Our heat went out in the middle of the night and All Temp was the only company that actually has a 24/7 crew. Lots of places advertise that you can "call them" 24/7, but they just want you to "sit fast" and "use a space heater" until they open in the morning. Not All Temp. Pete came by at 11:00pm and let us know what the problem was and what we might need. Then All Temp called at 8:00 a.m. to let us know that they were ordering the parts and would have someone to the house by noon. Art got here and fixed everything before noon. Absolutely professional, astoundingly fast and wonderful service. They even gave me an Angie's list discount.

Now that heating season is around the corner, it's time to write my review of All Temp so that you don't get burned like I did. Beware of the "orphaned hot water heater." My old conventional furnace and hot water heater had separate metal pipes for venting purposes that joined together. At the point where the pipes joined, it became one big metal pipe that vented to the roof. Imagine an upside down "Y" in which the two short legs of the Y are connected to the furnace and hot water heater respectively, while the long leg vents to the roof. Because high-efficiency furnaces vent directly via PVC pipe out of the side of the house, the exhaust pipe that connected to my old furnace was no longer needed. Consequently, the installers cut off the furnace leg of the Y pipe and capped it. This looked fine to me because I unfortunately didn't do my homework on this. Luckily I obtained a building permit from the village of Bolingbrook. When the inspector came to do the final inspection, he pointed out that my hot water heater was now left not meeting code because the exhaust pipe was now too large to accommodate just my hot water heater. As a result, my new furnace installation failed inspection. He told me to call the heating contractor and have them install a liner -- a smaller pipe -- down the large pipe that vents to the roof. The inspector said he would come back after this was done. Alternatively, he said the contractor could show that they did some kind of calculation that proves the existing pipe isn't too big to adequately vent the hot water heater exhaust. At this point the story was bad enough. It got worse after I called All Temp to complain about the failed inspection. When I informed the installation manager about the situation, he said that he's been an engineer for 30 years and that the inspector didn't know what he was talking about. I love when people drop the "engineer" card as if it's some kind of magic wand. Then he said I should wait for him to gather the documentation showing the proper calculations. In other words, a liner wasn't necessary in his estimation because he could prove the pipe wasn't too big. This was obviously just a pipe dream. I got nowhere with him so next I called the salesman who prepared my estimate. He also gave me the run around as if he thought I was crazy. He kept saying stuff like "this has never happened before" and things along those lines. After I did more research on the issue, I learned that an "orphaned hot water heater" is not an uncommon occurrence. After a few days of waiting for either him or the salesman to call me back, I called the installation manager again and emphatically told him that I wanted the liner installed -- no ifs, ands, or buts. His response at this stage was a tepid "ok." This signaled to me that all of his previous protests were just theatrics designed to intimidate me and make me back down. But it doesn't end there. I scheduled an appointment for the liner guy to come and install the liner. He was a no show on that day. But he at least called me to let me know he wasn't coming because of rain. He said he would come the next day but he was a no show again. I waited four days in a row but the guy failed to show on each occasion. I had to call All Temp to ask why each day because the guy didn't even give me the courtesy of a phone call to let me know he wasn't coming. I guess I was supposed to just assume he wasn't coming because of the the threat of "rain" on those days. I got fed up. I called All Temp and expressed my willingness to take them to court. The liner guy showed up the same day. But he said he didn't bring a ladder so he couldn't do it that day. Really? It got farcical at this point. The liner guy came back after the weekend and installed the liner. The inspector came back a few days later and my furnace finally passed inspection. But it took about three weeks for the problem to get fixed. My recommendation would be to avoid a contractor that is so recalcitrant in fixing such an obvious problem. All Temp's cavalier response to my initial complaints was especially disturbing considering a faulty ventilation set up could potentially result in lethal carbon monoxide build up in your house. All of the people I dealt with at All Temp from the salesman, the installation manager, the installers, and the liner installer were all unprofessional and contemptuous. I even remember the salesman getting very defensive when I brought up the idea of obtaining a permit for this job. He said, "You don't know our company," when I suggested obtaining a permit. That should have been a red flag from the very beginning in retrospect. In actuality, I would have been in big trouble if I hadn't obtained a permit because I had to rely on the inspector to point out the problem. Otherwise, All Temp might have been able to cut this corner and get away with it.

I'm not really sure where to even start with this buts lets start with chimney liners. Liners are often needed with brick/masonry chimneys (especially exterior) when a 80% afue furnace is replacing an old natural draft furnace or when a furnace is replaced by a high efficiency PVC vented furnace, and the hot water heater is the only appliance remaining using the old brick chimney. The purpose of a chimney liner is to protect the masonry materials from condensating and degrading over time. This customer had an interior, double wall Bvent metal chimney in which both the furnace and water heater were using. Not a brick chimney. The idea that the water heater is "orphaned" and now will not draft properly is ridiculous. The old furnace was 80% afue with a draft inducer motor that would start to add draft when the furnace was operating. Did the furnace start up and aid in the drafting every time the hot water heater came on? Of course not. If was orphaned after we completed our work, then consider it orphaned 90% of the time it was running before. The size of the metal chimney was large enough to accommodate both appliances running at the same time, but most of the time, only 1 was running. There wasn't any more risk of carbon monoxide after we left than existed before. Which was zero risk. I am not upset with the customer at all. He was just in the middle of this opinion of the city inspector and what is common practice in this situation with any HVAC company. We did install a 4" chimney liner inside the existing metal chimney at no cost so I question why he thinks that he was "burned". We did have to miss a couple of appointments because of weather and it is very possible that one of my installer showed up without the proper ladder, but we never took the attitude that we were not going to take care of this issue for him. I apologize that we didn't handle this better and it seemed that way to him. It was an extremely bizarre request by this inspector, but in the end we provided a solution that satisfied him.

I have used All Temp previously for routine maintenance. The first couple times were great, then the previous time was a bit lacking, but when an emergency came up and the AC stopped working in my rental condo, I called them first. They got me on the schedule the same day. The tech was prompt and diagnosed the issue. I received a call from the main office let me know that they found the blower motor to be out, but they could not repair it unless I had a plumber come out to open up the wall. He proceeded to try to explain the issue and I ultimately ended up meeting the tech at the unit because it would be impossible for me to explain to anyone what needed to be done if I didn't see it myself. It turns out that the PVC condensation pipe was routed in front of the access door and needed removed. I told him that I'd cut it back and we could get someone to reroute it if necessary later; he said he could cut it. I asked for him to err on the side of minimal removal; just what he needed to access the motor. We were back in business. I okayed the repair. He picked up the part and I left the now *hot* condo with my extremely cooperative tenant. Then the text messages started. The tech had cut himself and walked out. He wasn't going to finish the work. The tenant wasn't sure if he was coming back or not. He was very angry. I had no idea what was going on. I called the office to see what had happened. I could totally understand if he cut his arm during the installation and could not continue, but something else was going on. Apparently, he was angry and frustrated because he couldn't get the leverage to place the motor (he was on the smaller side) and twice walked out like he was not going to finish the job leaving my tenant clueless. The second time, he left and didn't return. My tenant didn't know what was going on (the new part was still there, the closet was open, dirty towel on the floor), so I called the office and found that they would send him and another tech the next day. I passed this information along to my tenant who was quite upset at the ordeal and lack of communication (and the mess...he has a kid and pet and this closet was right in the walkway). The next morning, I called to ensure we were still on the schedule and that everything was "ok" with the returning tech. It was Saturday. office staff had no idea what happened the previous day or that there was an issue. My concern was being sure that my tenant would be treated with respect. They arrived on time and finished the job. The techs cut the pipe all the way back, not even leaving an inch to connect anything to and it was cut at an angle. I really wished they would have let us cut the pipe ourselves. The AC is working well. When I called to pay, I asked about the Angie's list discount. I had told the person who scheduled the work about Angie's List, but not the guy who did the pricing. He insisted that the price included the discount. In the past, they have given me the price, then made a big production about the Angie's List discount. The fact that they failed to mention it is what really lead me to believe it wasn't applied. He did tell me that they didn't charge me extra for coming back on a Saturday or for cutting the PVC. Um, thanks? I was tempted to bring up the lack of professionalism (we all get frustrated, but don't behave that way) and the fact that I had offered to cut the PVC pipe (a 3 minute job), but I was done with the situation. Even when I was in the midst of talking to the office about the walk-outs, they wanted to justify this behavior. I just wanted to know if he was coming back or if we needed to move on.
