He arrived on time, but didn't have my correct phone number so I went to the truck to say hello. He kept calling me "Buddy", so that I felt I was in a cheap whodunit film. He brought his 14 year old son along, as a "helper", whom he let actually attach gauges to the high pressure gas lines! He looked at my furnace-A/C unit and told me that the circuit board was defective and would cost $380 to replace (I later checked the price on the internet and learned I could get one for $90) that the gas burner's were crooked, and they too needed replacement at $440) By the way, the unit is 7 years old and has always worked. He told me that what I really needed was a new unit priced at $3920. But that buying a new unit would be a "deal" because it would "only" cost me $2000 since I would get a $1100 tax credit ( a year later) and since I I had to spend $820 anyway. I felt like I was being manipulated in a manner similar to the pressure tactics used by some car salesmen. During his sales pitch, he even yelled to his son who was outside working on the A/C, "Hey! Run to the truck and get my smokes!" When I demurred, he said something like, "Hey! It's no skin off my back. I don't care if you order or not." The next day an old friend reminded me that her son-in-law did HVAC repair and suggested I call him. He came by, checked out the system, got it to work, and said it was probably just a loose wire. The circuit board was OK, and yes, the burners were crooked, but it wasn't significant, and overall the system was fine.
