I was very pleased with their work. There were no problems with it. I dealt directly with the owner and he was able to provide me with the information that I needed in a timely manner as well as adjusting his work schedule to meet my needs. I would absolutely use them again.

The saga begins on August 7, 2008 and continues on September 4. In light of these first experiences with an estimator from AAA-1, which I describe as dismissive, our roofing contractor personally contacted the owner, Robert Reese. Our subsequent site visit on September 23, was the antithesis of the first encounter. So much so, that I gave a verbal commitment to schedule Phase 1 of our masonry repair work, as soon as the discussed options could be returned in contract form... promised within a week. Despite my numerous calls, messages, and conversations with Mr. Reese, and his several promises to deliver, the revised contract never arrived. Futile though it may be, it is still my hope to establish that 'Dream Team' of roofing and masonry contractors to maintain our lovely building. To that end I'm enlisting Angie's List services to assist me in that quest.
Description of Work: Based on the highest ratings from Angie's List, and to a greater extent, on the recommendation of our trusted roofing contractor, I sought with AAA-1, to establish an excellent team to maintain our beautiful vintage building. Regrettably, we've not been able to contract AAA-1 for the high quality work they are capable of doing, due to their complete lack of follow-through (stonewalling comes to mind), on a revised bid on our phased, capital repairs.

The masonry sealing quotes were quite competitive with other bids received. The bidsheet, however, was not as detailed as to process, guarantees, and type of sealer to be used. The quotes for those units who were also having work done on parapet walls was quite a bit more expensive - almost double other quotes. When one of the owners contacted AAA-1 to discuss the quote and whether he wanted to do all of the parapet wall work, the discussion did not go well, and the owner reported that the AAA-1 contact got angry. We decided that we didn't want to work with someone who could not reasonably discuss his bid.
Description of Work: Our townhouse complex contacted this company to bid on masonry sealing, and also to do some minor tuckpointing work for all units, which were priced per unit. Quotes for other units also included repair work on parapet walls on garages.

They showed up on time and worked hard. At the completion of the project many extras were added to the project but one credit was not applied. Once it was brought to their attention, they adjusted their bill. I am happy with the end result but I do believe some of the extras were a stretch.
Description of Work: Replaced concrete steps with limestone.
We chose them because of the positive reviews that they had on Angie's List. We had several estimates and this company offered a middle of the road quote. I felt that I could trust them. They took 2 days to do the work and they matched the brick. Everything looks great.
Description of Work: We had them tuckpoint the south side of the house around the snow line. They replaced a window with glass block. They replaced nine rows of brick towards the cap of the chimney and poured a new capstone.

Scott from AAA came out at our request several times over a one-year period to inspect the property and prepare estimates. He was always very punctual and straightforward, and his explanations made sense. When we finally scheduled the work, the workers came out precisely on time and were very professional. Their work was excellent.

The job went very well. They did a thorough and professional job, and cleaned up after themselves. They even provided some additional tuckpointing that they saw needed to be done - at no additional charge. The only problem I ran into was with scheduling the work - it basically took over a month to get a date for the work, but they showed up promptly on the appointed day.
Description of Work: They repaired a hole in a brick wall between our garden unit and a basement. The hole was about four inches in diameter at it's largest point. They had to remove and replace roughly three square feet of brick.

Robert came to our house in April after two phone calls to schedule an estimating visit. He was very friendly and professional. However, I never was able to get an estimate from this firm. I waited two weeks, and then started calling weekly to inquire when my estimate would arrive in the mail. Every time I was told, "Robert is working on it, it will come soon". After EIGHT weeks, I gave up and contacted another firm on Angie's List. I requested estimates for 3 repairs, which I expected to be costly, so I don't understand the lack of a response. AAA-1 Masonry did work for us in the past, and it was good, but I will never try to use them again. I also will never recommend them to anyone in the future.
Description of Work: No work was performed. I could never get Robert to provide an estimate after 8 weeks of calling.

They encountered some problems when dismantling the chimney the liner never extended all the way up the chimney. This left the bricks exposed to the inside flue for over 50 years. The outside of some of these bricks had already broken off. When they went to remove the "good bricks" they basically disintegrated. AAA-1 kept me in the loop and carefully explained what was happening throughout the day so I understood how the end product was going to look. We were pleased with the work.
Description of Work: AAA-1 dismantled the chimney from the cap and down 3 1/2 feet. They inspected the flue tiles and liner, then rebuilt the chimney to the original height. A new poured concrete chimney cap was installed. AAA-1 ground out 100% of the remaining horizontal and vertical brick chimney mortar joints down to the roof flashing approximately five feet, and from the roofline down to grade an additional twelve feet. They also completed tuckpointing at various places around the house, and recaulked the vertical windowsill mortar joints on each window on the house.

Over the course of the last three years, AAA-1 Tuck-pointing has performed a variety of repairs on our condo building. The original builders of the condo cut some corners in the quality of their work and the condo unit owners were left to deal with the random water leaks that this caused. After getting a variety of estimates, AAA-1 was chosen. This was based solely on the professionalism and knowledge that their lead, Brent, portrayed to us. Over the course of the last couple years, in response to a variety of leaks, Brent was always reliable and responsive to our requests to assess and troubleshoot where the water might be coming in. Given the way water travels, it's often hard to pinpoint the exact cause of the problem, but Brent was adept in his diagnoses and never tried to hard sell us into unnecessary repairs. It was only after all leaks were repaired and the full scope of their work on the building over the last few years was considered, that I realized how amazing this company, and Brent in particular, is. It was almost as if AAA-1 took a personal interest in ensuring that the building was up to par, with a feeling that Brent was in it more out of professional interest in fixing things, than simply an interest in getting invoices paid. I can not recommend this company more highly and am very thankful to them for all of the work they've done over the last few years. Given the repeated need to work with them and the consistency of my being impressed by their outcomes, this might be one of the best contracting companies I've had the pleasure of dealing with.
Description of Work: Ground and tuck-pointed mortar joints in a variety of areas of our condo, coming out to fix different areas on separate jobs in response to various water seepage that arose. Removed caps on roof parapet walls and properly flashed the entire perimeter of the building. Repaired lentil leaks on windows.

From the moment I met Brent Moore, I knew I could trust this company. I first met Brent a year ago when he came out to give me an estimate. He was honest and very straightforward. We did not do any work at that time, but after we had a masonry expert look at our building, I contacted Brent again, he came out once more, and looked everything over with a fine tooth comb. He climbed onto a structure on the roof to get a better look and he had an injured knee! It turns out that his estimatation of the necessary work was very much in line with what the masonry expert told us. He maintained telephone contact with me, and answered all my questions thoroughly. When we finally decided to get the work done, a large crew of guys showed up very early (as scheduled) and worked all day (7-6) to get our building repointed. They even came back the next day to finish up some small remaining areas on our front steps. They even patched a small part of broken concrete that we did not expect. They were extremely professional, and the foreman even took some time out to talk with me about the work. I got the impression that he was a bit of a perfectionist. They took the time to cover everything before starting and to clean up nicely when they were done. The owner of the company even called me after the work was done to see how everything went. I highly recommend AAA. If you're looking for expertise and professionalism, then they are the best. We were happy with everything!
Description of Work: AAA tuckpointed and sealed our entire building. We had some cracks in the mortar and some in the stone. AAA addressed these cracks with a great deal of detail, and then sealed the building.

My house is an old 2-flat with continuous pour concrete walls for the whole exterior shell, top to bottom. The house had many cracks all over from wear and expansion/contraction over time. I had a Structural Engineer come out and evaluate the house for structural failure and everything was fine. AAA-1 inspected the exterior, grinded and filled all the cracks and fixed all the spalling that was present over the house. They quoted a 3 day job at time and material. They were very efficient and worked hard to get everything done on time. When I called back to report a few spots that had been missed, someone came out the same day and finished the job.
Description of Work: Repaired all cracks in concrete exterior of house.

The actual masonry they did is doubtless excellent (hard for me to judge, since I'm not up on the roof). However, they did not warn me that I would be stuck with old moldering flashing on my brand new chimney- though their contract did specify that they don't replace flashing, I skated right past it. Net, my fault, but it was shocking to look up there and see old cruddy flashing up against a new chimney. Had I been more thoroughly alerted, I would have lined up my roofers and/ or painters to fix the flashing to match the chimney. When I called the estimator to tell him this, he was not at all helpful. Now, for smaller things that happened: After asking them to be really careful of my gardens, one of which had just been planted, they ended up trampling a new shade garden. Their attitude was, well, what did you expect with men working here? Again, had they just up front said "we will have a really hard time protecting this area," then I would have moved out some plants. But they had said they would be careful. Finally, and this was a shocker, their man working in our basement cut the freezer cord and never mentioned it. It would have been pretty obvious that it was cut as it is out in the open where he was working. I was just lucky that we needed something a couple of days later and the food was still mostly frozen. We called the estimator and his response was "this has never happened before." He offered to pay for it, but did not follow up. I ended up paying the bill in full, but writing him a letter with the complaints cited above and said it was up to him to see what adjustment he wanted to make for the ruined garden area (small area) and the cut cord on the freezer. I doubt I'll see a cent of accommodation. I told him he needed more pride in his work. So, maybe people who just want straight-forward masonry from a masonry "mill," like this one will be happy. But for us perfectionists in historic houses, I'd seek another source. UPDATE: I got their final bill (after paying them), and still owe them a small amount of money for the square footage of "parge" coating that went over the initial estimate. I will pay this of course. I thought you might find it amusing that their deduction for the cut cord on our freezer was a lousy $15, like you could get an electrician out to the house these days for less than $100 to fix such a thing. Just another indication of why I wouldn't use them again. They are a "mill" who churns out their product with little regard for customer relations. I imagine it is because they will likely never see a customer again, given the lifespan of masonry. So why build long term relationships? Of course this would hurt their word of mouth, but they don't care.
Description of Work: They rebuilt my chimney from the roofline up and also "parge" coated some decomposing bricks in the basement. I should start by saying that I am really spoiled by my current contractors in other fields, all of them highly rated by Angie's List. They not only "do the job," but work with me to find the best way to do it, with aesthetics in mind as well, given that I live in a historic house in a historic neighborhood. This is the area where I feel AAA-1 failed me.

Response from AAA-1 Masonry & Tuckpointing Inc
THE DAY AFTER COMPLETION OF THE JOB (EXCEPT FOR THE CHIMNEY FORM REMOVAL), SHE CALLED ME AND VOCIFEROUSLY COMPLAINED THE FLASHING LOOKED TERRIBLE AND "AESTHETICALLY UNACCEPTABLE." SHE EXPLICITLY DEMANDED I REPLACE IT. I COURTEOUSLY INFORMED HER THAT AAA-1 DID NOT REPLACE FLASHING--THIS IS A JOB FOR A DIFFERENT TRADE--AND SHE EVIDENTLY MISSED THE SENTENCE IN THE PROPOSAL WHICH STIPULATED THAT THE "CONTRACTOR WILL RENEW CHIMNEY SEAL ONLY. THE FLASHING ITSELF WILL NOT BE REPLACED." SHE BECAME SOMEWHAT INDIGNANT, ACCUSATORY AND EXTORTIVE...IMPLICITLY STATING THAT OTHERS WOULD LEARN OF MY UNPROFESSIONAL WORK AND THAT I "NEEDED MORE PRIDE" IN MY WORK. IT WAS NOT UNTIL THE FOLLOWING DAY THAT SHE ADMITTED THAT AAA-1 WAS CORRECT. IN A FOLLOW UP PHONE CALL THAT SAME DAY I INFORMED HER THAT I RETURNED TO HER HOUSE, TOOK A PHOTO OF THE CHIMNEY FLASHING AND SPOKE TO THE FOREMAN; I TOLD HER THE FLASHING WAS OF A STANDARD STEP-UP STYLE FOUND IN THOUSANDS OF HOMES IN THE CHICAGOLAND AREA. I ALSO TOLD HER THAT HER CHIMNEY FLASHING WAS SOUND AND FUNCTIONAL, NOT "MOULDERING AND CRUDDY." I APOLOGIZED FOR THE SLIGHTLY "TRAMPLED SHADE GARDEN" (WHICH SHOULD REGENERATE) AND AGREED TO CREDIT HER FOR THE REPAIR OF HER FREEZER CORD SINCE HER "REGULAR AND WONDERFUL CONTRACTOR" WAS WITH HER THAT DAY AND "QUICKLY GOT THE FREEZER RUNNING AGAIN." MY FOREMAN CLAIMS HE NEVER REMOVED THE CORD LET ALONE "CUT IT." HAD SHE SUBMITTED A BILL OR EVEN VERBALLY SHARED WITH ME WHAT HER COST FOR THE CORD WORK WAS, I WOULD HAVE PAID HER MYSELF BECAUSE I VALUE CUSTOMER RELATIONS. TO INTIMATE THAT THE COST FOR SUCH WORK IS NO LESS THAN $100 IS DISINGENUOUS WHEN I AM MADE AWARE OF HER DISTRESS THROUGH THIS INTERNET CHALKBOARD. I TRY TO MAKE LEMONS OUT OF LEMONADE; HOWEVER, I FOUND THIS VERY DIFFICULT WITH HER...FOR AFTER SHE REALIZED WE WERE NOT GOING TO REPLACE HER "UNACCEPTABLE" AND "AESTHETICALLY CRUDDY FLASHING" SHE BECAME SOMEWHAT CAUSTIC AND DENIGRATING, WHICH CURTAILED SUBSEQUENT CONSTRUCTIVE AMELIORATION OF THE ISSUES. IF AT ANY TIME YOU FEEL LIKE THE WORKMANSHIP OF THE CONTRACTED PROJECT WAS COMPARABLE TO THAT OF A "MILL" OR THAT I OR MY FOREMAN DECEIVED YOU IN ANY WAY, I WILL HAVE A CHECK CUT IMMEDIATELY FOR ANY AMOUNT UP TO THE FULL COST OF THE JOB. MY REPUTATION AND THE REPUTATION OF THIS COMPANY ARE TOO IMPORTANT TO HAVE IT SULLIED BY A DISSATISFIED CUSTOMER. SHOULD THERE BE ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS REGARDING THIS MATTER PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO CONTACT ME AT 773/622-7300. SINCERELY, SCOTT L. BORRE/ESTIMATOR AND PROJECT MANAGER

They worked well with us on getting the right color for the grout it was a custom color. Overall it went very well they were very professional. They did a great job with working with my husband and give giving him direction if they needed extra work.
Description of Work: They did tuckpointing on my three store landmark home in Chicago north side and west side and they rebuilt two chimneys. They do the complexity of the work they worked really well with the landmark association they had to get it all approved. Tuckpointing needed to be done a precise way so they did a good job taking care of the older brick.

When struggling with whether to buy a new brick home, Rob Reese was willing to come out and look over the shape of the home even though he knew we had not yet bought it. I called for an estimate and Frank returned my call that same day. He scheduled an appt. to meet me that week, and was right on time. Frank spent 30 minutes with me walking around the whole building, and then also the roof. He was extremely knowledgeable, and explained everything to me in layman's terms. He was very professional and friendly, and I learned a lot from him. I received an extremely detailed, typed proposal in the mail the next week (they don't do email). I had a few questions, so I called AAA-1, and Frank called me back that afternoon and did his best to answer me. I felt confident that their proposal was accurate, and the work would have been done very well. However, their price was so much higher than the other 2 estimates I got, the condo association chose not to go forward with AAA-1.
Description of Work: AAA-1 gave me an estimate to repair/replace failing brick on our 6 unit, 3 story condo building, and also to disassemble old, non-functioning chimneys.
