He showed up the first day, did pretty good work, but never showed up to finish the job. Attempted many times to get him to come back and keep getting excuses. This has now gone on for over 3 years!

He had done some work for us 8 years ago, and he responded promptly. He came to look over what needed to be done, and two days he came and painted the shutters. Very carefully done and the shutters make the house look a lot better. By the time we finished we were close to a time we had to go out, but he worked at the door in the time we had and he made some adjustments that made the door close better. The price was a bit high for u s, but it was worth it.
Description of Work: Painted shutters, many on the second floor I can no longer climb up to, and did repairs on a door that did not close well.

Take note of other reviews that indicate "hard to get in touch with". Tom will follow through on his commitments, but may need some prodding here and there.

Work was done expediently and with attention to detail. Tom was flexible enough to do the work in two separate phases, as we were paying by check. He can be a little hard to get ahold of at times, but he completes the job and leaves the work area clean. I was very satisfied with the work he performed.
Description of Work: Tom replaced flood-damaged drywall in the garage. He hung additional drywall to form an air barrier between parts of the attic and our garage. Tom performed similar work in the upstairs bathroom. He also repaired a plumber's emergency hole in the drywall near the downstairs bathroom, removed atrociously bad walls from the foyer and replaced it with a more traditional bannister. The walls beneath the bannisters were skim-coated so that we could paint later.

Very nice, professional, accommodating. Makes sure customer is satisfied. I would recommend that when working with Tom, you set a specific timeline and make certain you are specific with exactly what you want done. We're a bit lax on specifications and oversight, so the "fault" for a couple of misunderstandings (which he cheerfully remedied) may lie with us somewhat on this.

This is the 3rd job Tom did for us. He previously did our Kitchen and full 2nd floor remodel. Overall Tom does excellent work and a very fair price! My biggestt issue for this project was the project went 7 months overdue. I think the factors that contributed to this were: (1) Initial Permit issues since Tom's insurance lapsed and had to get new paperwork (2) Due to the slow economy he had to lay off his crew and he did all the work himself (3) His Dad was in the hospital and he had to take care of him.

This is the worst experience I ever had with a contractor. It is not the quality of work as reported by other Angie List members. It appears Tom hires sub contractors to do the actual work. But my experience shows that he is not a carpenter, contractor, or has enough trade skills to know when a sub contractor is doing the job wrong or poorly. In my case, the doors were not shimmed to the frame. They attached doors to the frame with the trim as opposed to shims. This caused the trim to split and damaged during installation. Trim was not fitted correctly. They refused to attach door knob/hardware to doors they wanted me ...to purchase different door hardware(round latch/plates)so they would not have to chisel out for the latch plate. They were afraid they might split the door". He was unable to install a closet door because he could not figure out how to make it fit. I installed the door myself in less the 2 hours. He measured 2 closet doors wrong and the doors are to short and wide for the area he framed out. The doors were only finished with one coat which was poorly applied. I requested for damaged trim to be fixed during installation and, this was not done. This project was started in September with an expected completion by end of October. As of December 1st, the project has not been completed. I fired this contractor on December 17th with a request for a $500.00 + refund on a job not completed and that will need major refinishing. It will be interesting to know if he refunds the money. Tom had nothing but excuses and lies for why he was late and why the job was not done properly. He did not even offer to correct the project. I would not recommend anyone hire this person as he does not show the experience or care on how the job gets done.

I left a message asking for an appointment for an estimate. Over a week and a half went by with no response from the company. I then received a message stating that he was out of town and would now be able to set up an appointment for an estimate. Decided not to continue with this company due to the fact that in their voicemail message there was no mention that they were on vacation or out of the office and would respond back to messages in a certain amount of time. It made me question the punctuality and reliability of the company.

THE ESTIMATE THAT WE SIGNED IN 01/06 HAD THE SAME BALANCE THAT WAS PAID. I MET WITH THEM MANY TIMES ABOUT THE DRAWINGS AND THE PLACEMENT AND THE WALL THEY PLANED TO MOVE BEFORE I COULD INSTALL THE BOOK SHELVES. THE WIDTH OF THE SHELVES WERE THE CAUSE OF THE SAGGING SO I HAD TO REMOVE THE FANCY FACE BOARDS AND USE A SOLID FLAT PIECE TO MAKE THE SPAN.

Tom did good work. We were pleased with the way it worked out. However, it took him much longer to complete it than we had been told. He told us he would be done at the end of April but as that date approached, it became obvious to us that wasn't going to happen. Tom kept telling us he would be done in a day or two, when in truth, he didn't even have the materials to complete the job yet. He finally finished in June (the job started in February). Tom's communications also left something to be desired. Until close to the end of the job, he was fairly good about returning my husband's calls, but never once returned mine. When I asked him about that, his reply was "my bad". This was not a very professional answer.

The quality of work was good. The same guys did most of the work; only one items was subcontracted out. Overall, things went as planned. When issues arose, as they do in an old home, Tom and team figured it out as best as possible who to get it done. When I decided to make a few changes they went along with it without an issue.
Description of Work: Tom and crew completely gutted and remodeled my bathroom in my 100 year old home. The floor was reinforced for a claw foot tub, new plumbing, the toilet was moved, new electrical, walls, tile, fixtures, windows and paint. TCF did all the labor while I supplied most of the materials. All bathroom tile, fixtures and cabinets were bought through another company, who I would not use again. Project took longer than expected but they all do.

I contracted TCF Carpentry in September 2007 to remodel my bathroom. As of April 2008, not only had he not started work (after numerous attempts on my part to get the project started), he also did not have the needed materials to do the job, even though I had given him a large down payment months before. Worse, when he delivered the items that had come in, and gave me a refund, he did not have all the invoices requested, he had ordered a tub from a different manufacturer than I had specified, and the wall tile was the wrong color. I later took the tile back to the the store myself, and found out that the tile had only been ordered on the day when I told him that I needed a refund of my deposit. He's a nice guy, but I was too naive in believing his continual stories about why he couldn't start the work as planned. What was supposed to be done in October will hopefully be done in the next few weeks by a different contractor.

Met with Tom Frye on a Sunday and work commenced the following week. Framing was done rapidly and with great quality. Milestones were provided for all aspects of the project. All dates were met and in cases most work was finished ahead of schedule. The detail and effort were notable particularly in the woodworking. Crew was exceptional and always willing to spend the time to do each phase of the project right.

Tom's work took over 3 months to complete verses his estimate of 2 weeks. Demolition crew was careful, but timing was bad because it lasted Thurs. through Tue., and only then could they start to install the sub-floor. Later, drywall installation took 2 weeks. Tom explained he had had past issues with that employee. We spec'd Benjamin Moore paint but Tom substituted TCF paint with out our knowledge and didn't buy it until we brought the difference to his attention. When we noted that one color of Benjamin Moore they used obviously didn't match the original color, Tom agreed and said, "You should take that paint back to the store I bought it at and demand a refund." The door finish was bad and Tom's week-long try to fix the problem didn't help, so we must redo that soon. Tom tried to use the grout we had bought, but said it was inferior and wouldn't work. The rest of the grout disappeared 1 day (we would have liked to keep what was left), and TCF substituted grout from a home improvement store.
Description of Work: Tom and his crew provided demolition, labor and a few materials (drywall, trim, paint) to completely renovate our only bathroom. They then installed plumbing fixtures, accessories and tile that we supplied. TCF also hung cabinets in another room and patched some drywall cracks and painted over some of the patchwork. Tom was very helpful in resolving a recurring problem with the cabinet that twice arrived broken. The bad timing of the demolition (over a weekend) increased our hotel costs because we had no toilet from Thursday to Tuesday! The job was very stressful for us.

WE UNDERSTAND THE MEMBER’S CONCERNS THAT THIS PROJECT INDEED TOOK LONGER THAN ORIGINALLY PROJECTED. THERE WERE SEVERAL ISSUES WHICH INCREASED THE TIMELINE. DEMOLITION TOOK LONGER BECAUSE REPLACEMENT OF THE SUB FLOOR AND ADDITIONAL FRAMING WAS NEEDED DUE TO DECAY AND MOLD. PROBLEMS WITH ITEMS PURCHASED BY OWNER SUCH AS DAMAGED CABINETRY, INCORRECT SINK, COUNTER TOP ISSUES & FAULTY GROUT ALSO CAUSED DELAYS. TCF DID PURCHASE & INCUR THE COST OF GLASS FOR THE CABINETRY IN ORDER TO REPAIR IT INSTEAD OF SENDING IT BACK TO THE MANUFACTURER FOR THE 3RD TIME. THE GROUT PURCHASED BY THE MEMBER WAS DEFECTIVE. TCF INCURRED THE COST OF THE REPLACEMENT WHICH WAS USED UP ENTIRELY. TCF DID MAKE EVERY ATTEMPT TO RESPOND TO THE MEMBER’S CONCERNS. WE REGRET THE ERRATIC WORK SCHEDULE OF THE INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNED TO THE PROJECT. A REASSIGNMENT WAS MADE AND WORK STEADILY IMPROVED & WAS COMPLETED. THE MEMBER DID REQUEST A SPECIFIC BRAND OF PAINT & THE PERSON ASSIGNED SUBSTITUTED THE PAINT WITHOUT THE KNOWLEDGE OF TCF. WHEN THIS WAS BROUGHT TO OUR ATTENTION, THE CORRECT BRAND OF PAINT WAS PURCHASED & THE BATHROOM WAS REPAINTED. THE BENJAMIN MOORE PAINT PURCHASED TO COVER THE CRACK REPAIR IN THE LIVING ROOM AREA WAS THE EXACT MIX CODE OF THE EXISTING WALL PAINT. TCF CANNOT CONTROL THE MIXTURE OF THE PAINT AND CONDITIONS OF THE EXISTING WALLS MAY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE SHADE DIFFERENCE. MANY ATTEMPTS WERE MADE TO REDO THE FINISH ON THE DOOR TO THE MEMBER’S SATISFACTION.

Tom was very responsive to our contact and flexible about meeting us after work. He spent quite a bit of time reviewing the job and plans with us. He submitted his estimate in a timely manner. Per Tom, he does not use sub-contractors. He presents as very involved and proud of his work. Unfortunately, we are unable to work with him due to an out-of-state family emergency. We hope to call him in the future once we are ready to re-assemble our basement. Estimated cost was $9000.
Description of Work: Our finished and furnished basement flooded as a result of mad storms. We needed extensive drywall work to remove the affected areas and re-lace doors, trim, baseboards, etc. We also needed our furnishings moved to a storage area and some items thrown out due to water damage.
