The gates are beautiful. We knew we would need them for many years and we wanted something that looks nice and blends with the home -- not something that looked sloppy and temporary. We get compliments on the gates all the time. Now my son is going to call them and get some help as well.
Description of Work: We have 4 grandchildren now under 4 and a 5th one due soon. We hired Home Safe Home to add some childproof locks and to put in permanent wooden gates.

The owner, Hal, was a nice man, professional and on time. He walked through our home and gave us a lot of good information on potential safety issues while also noting what he thought we might need on the estimate. We liked that he was practical, suggesting that we install child safety outlet plates only at the locations that we use regularly and to use cap covers on the remaining outlets. We also liked that he, as the owner, would personally come back out to do the installation rather than a subcontractor or employee. We were interested specifically in one type of baby gate that he carried, Gatekeepers. Solid wood gates, custom made to order and stained to match our existing vintage moldings and stairwells. The other aspect of these gates that we really liked was that they could be made with small framed cut outs at the bottom so that our cats could come and go with ease. In the end we decided to go with another company who carried a less expensive product that Home Safe Home did not offer. We knew we would be moving in one year and could not justify a custom made (and custom priced) product that we would not be able to take with us to our new home and possible could not sell to whomever bought our home. That said if we were going to stay in our current home for the long haul we would have gone with Home Safe Home.
Description of Work: The owner came out to my home to provide an estimate for childproofing three floors of my home.

Hal was extremely professional and prompt. We enjoyed speaking with him and he was obviously an expert in his field. We didn't ultimately work with him as we felt his quote was on the higher side of what we wished to spend. We'd recommend anyone looking for services of this nature to at least speak with him and get an idea of what is needed in your home for your little ones.

Thank you [Member name removed], it was nice meeting with you and Jen for a consultation. I'm sorry that our proposal and suggested safety devices may have exceeded your planned allowance, and that we couldn't be your choice of professional childproofing services, but please keep us in mind if we can be of assistance in the future.

Hal was very meticulous and very quick. In 4 hours he installed 18 locks and 2 gates. I also give Hal credit for working with gates and locks he had not installed before. This was money well spent in my mind.

Thank you [member name removed] for the kind words. As we discussed prior to accepting the job, I usually don't install client provided materials because if a problem occurs due to inferior devices, the responsibility of repair comes back to haunt me. But you chose quality gates and locks and I'm happy you're pleased with the results.

Hal installed the gates and door locks. Hal delivers exactly what he promises: he arrives on time (or early!) and works efficiently. He really listened to what we wanted and had plenty of ideas and options to accommodate very specific requests. Reasonably priced, too! Hal quickly figured out how to install the gates we had bought (which we could not see how to do without damaging the staircase). The gates work great and the installation was very professional and do not interfer with the staircase aesthetics. We plan to have Hal do other work for us when we need it.

My wife first had Hal out to quote him supplying and installing gates for the stairs, as well as cabinet locks. After the initial quote we thought it was over our budget so we decided to buy the gates online and just have him install them. Our staircases didn't allow for a standard attachment for the gates that we purchased, but Hal was able to make it work and it also looks very nice and professional.
Description of Work: Hal came by to install gates that we purchased online. He also ripped some pieces of wood and painted them white to attach the gates to so we didnt have to attach right into the staircase post.

After my dog was scheduled to have surgery I had to limit his access to the stairs. I owned 2 child gates and needed them to be installed. I called Hal Norman, the owner, on a Wed. and he made time to come to my place the following Sunday. He did a great job and for the first time I feel that these gates are secure. I've had friends and handymen install the same gates in the past but I won't again. When Hal pulled out a leveler I knew I had found the right person. I was also very happy to find his listing under the handyman section of Angis' List as I would not have thought about looking under child proofing.

Start to finish. It was a great job. He was careful and it looked good with my decor. He added a padding around my coffee table , around my kitchen table and all my counters and nightstands in the bedroom.
Description of Work: This company is outstanding! I had an accident that required me to have my home safety proofed so I would not fall and injure myself again. Hal Norman came to my door and the minute I met him, I knew I was in good hands. It was a little embarrassing as I don't have children as this service was for my well being but once I explained to Hal my situation he was kind and gentle and took control. I highly recommend Home Safe Home Childproofing for this type of service. He was prompt, met the job and made the safety proofing look ok with my decor. It was a success! Thanks again Hal

He arrived each time about 20 minutes late but he is quite a friendly person so it was ok. He did the installation as expected. In hindsight, my question would be quality of products. The plastic broke in a complete vertical split in about 8-10 months and when I called and asked if he would repair it for free, he said it was too old. Secondly, the gate's hinge (or the part that's attached to the stairway post) has become difficult to maneuver and requires a continuous adjustment to open and close. I do think the babyproofing idea is great but for $200, I do question the quality of products. Maybe a written warrenty of workmanship would be in order but Hal is a nice guy.
Description of Work: The service is done in two trips. The first one is to give you a complete estimate of the choices you can make regarding what you want installed. The second trip is the actual installation. He installed one baby gate, one plastic partition to cover a oversized gap in the stairway, and magnetic drawer stoppers in the kitchen. I think it took about 2 hours.

I hired Hal of Home Safe Home Childproofing to install a few gates and a pet door. He made other recommendations as well, which I ultimately decided to handle myself, but there was never any pressure to buy anything I wasn't comfortable with. He took extraordinary pride in his work and was satisfied only after it was completed perfectly. The original mounting board he brought for one of the gates didn't match the banister stain exactly, so he suggested that he return later with a better match. (Most people would have probably tried to talk me into accepting it!) The pet door was a bit tricky to install, but he persisted until it was done right as well. He may not have been the least expensive option I could have gone with, but his craftsmanship and pride was well worth the price. I highly recommend Home Safe Home Childproofing for any childproofing work you have; you won't be disappointed!

Thank you Member for appreciating the attention to detail I always try to incorporate into every installation. Often, clients tell me that " it doesn't matter what it looks like", but I remind them that they will be looking at and using these devices for what may be years to come. When a gate is properly and professionally installed, they won't be longing to take them down before they've served their purpose because they can't stand to look at them any longer! Your comments to other Angie's List clients is a tribute to the work ethics of Home Safe Home Childproofing. Thank you again.

Overall, Hal was fantastic to work with. From the initial conversation, he was consistently professional and very, very thorough. He did not pressure us at all to do any or all of the home modifications that he recommended. He always made time for our many questions. He always promptly returned my calls. I would highly recommend him to anyone.
Description of Work: Hal performed a thorough home evaluation and made safety recommendations based on the assessment. He installed 2 gates, several magnetic cabinet locks, door locks, door stops, sliding closet door locks, and also, secured a dresser to a wall. He also came back on a few occasions to fix both gates (free of charge!) I have also called him a few times to ask his opinion on home safety related issues.

I saved $200 off the total bill by using Angie's Big Deal. I don't think I would have done it otherwise. Hal came out to look over the house and make suggestions. A date the following week was set for installation. Certain things ended up not working as envisioned, so they were scrapped (closet door locks would not work because closet doors were warped). Other things were added at my request. Hal was very realistic about what would work and what would be too much of a hassle for adults to bypass when children were not around. He also had to make adjustments for cat access. Hal has a great working knowledge of what's available in the field of child safety, and he installed items that were higher in quality than normally seen in the usual "box store", in my opinion. Clean up was great, and the safety features seem to be very user friendly and not too intrusive in every day life when no kids are around.

We were very happy. He did a good job. He gave us an estimate that was over $1000, but we only did about $170 of work. He was really nice about it and we were happy with what he did. He told us we could do any or all of these things and we did what we wanted. From start to finish, he was outstanding. We would give him a top rating. We like that he was knowledgeable and creative. Even for our drawers, which were custom, he came up with ways to customize the locks because none of the ones from the store would work.
Description of Work: He put child safety locks on all of the cabinets in the kitchen, child safety locks on the toilet, and he came up with ways to block doors that lead to closets and the stairwell. He came with ways to put locks on the doors to make sure our child couldn't go down the stairs on in the closets.

We couldn't be happier. I called Home Safe Home and spoke with Hal who described his company and services to me over the phone. I then set up an in home estimate for a couple of days later. Hal came to our home, estimated what we needed (as well as what we didn't need, which we appreciated) and provided us a written estimate detailing the cost of each item including installation. He also looked at the things we had already done ourselves (gates, etc.) and let us know how those items looked and if they were properly installed. We liked the estimate and decided to go ahead with the project. We called Hal back and he was back out to our home within a few days. He brought all the items we requested and installed them all in a thorough, timely and professional manner. He also showed me how all the items worked. Hal was very professional, very knowledgeable and trustworthy.

Hal gave us a thorough on-site consultation, offering advice on ways we could childproof some things ourselves and telling us how he could provide custom work to accommodate our non-standard cabinetry and doors. He was friendly and professional and took his time, giving us a detailed and prompt estimate. At no time did we feel he was trying to sell us on things we did not need. We chose to have him do the majority of the work, which was in our opinion reasonably priced given the cost of childproofing materials, the time it would take, and our need to have someone who could help us deal with unusual cabinet configurations. He came back within a week to do the installation and spent five hours securing furniture and installing locks; he happily accommodated last minute requests without hesitation. His expertise allowed us to childproof without damaging cabinetry or having unsightly and hard-to-use locks. We highly recommend him and have referred our friends to him.
Description of Work: We have a one-year-old, and Hal provided extensive childproofing for our 4-story house, from adding locks on everything from kitchen cabinets and appliances to securing lamps and bookcases. His installation was professional and efficient, and the childproofing is often invisible when possible, which is what we requested. He brought childproofing issues to our attention and gave us tips about easy remedies. He also inspected gates and locks we already had installed to make sure they were secure.

This is a gross disappointment in both the contractor and Angie's list references. He came out and specified a "custom" solution to our childproofing requirements. We were showed pictures of metal gates and informed that he was going to have to custom build a solution to our needs. The quote seemed reasonable for a true, custom designed, built in type solution. He showed up with boxes from Kidco and Cardinal Gate, product we could have purchased ourselves from any child's store. Two hours later he was done with his "custom" solution which was nothing more than attaching the product to our wall. When I questioned him as to one of his solutions which would not allow access to our laundry room without closing the gate constantly, he said he could not be responsible for our use of the product. Before we wrote this review, we gave Hal the opportunity to make this right. He then wanted to charge me to come back and remove the product. I then contacted the manufacturer of two of the gates who informed me that the door in question was indeed not intended to have any adult shove it as it was designed for pressure from of child of 24 months. The manufacturer stated that the installer should have left instructions manuals, as well as a proof of purchase so that I could obtain warranty parts if anything broke. I've included pictures of what this contractor performed. For $800 we received two cheap metal gates with plastic hinges and one small $50 gate. Total material cost had to be $200 after reviewing the web for prices. He spent a total of 4 - 6 hours on this job which includes site review and purchasing time. Save yourself time and money and do not hire this contractor. If you went on the web, purchased a few gates and hired the most expensive carpenter you could find to install them, you'd end up with a much better result for much less money. His definition of custom is absolutely inaccurate and deceptive.
Description of Work: This company specified and installed 3 child gates that were quoted as "Custom".

When I initially spoke with the member in early November, she said she needed three child safety gates that were easy to remove, save for the occasional visit from her grandchildren. I made an appointment with her on November 6th to see the areas of concern, then proposed educated solutions and showed her detailed photographs designed to limit access to two stairways and one formal dining area. I fully explained to her that no "ready made" gate was available to secure two of the three areas, and I would have to customize specific parts of a gate designed for similar applications. Her husband wondered why he couldn't just put a piece of plywood in front of one of the areas I was asked to evaluate. As he was leaving the room, I explained the dangers of small children seeing adults stepping over a barrier and trying to mimic their actions, not to mention the damage to the walls and woodwork if the plywood is slid out of the way for access. Before I left their home, I asked her if I should leave the photographs we discussed for her husband to see, and she declined saying she'd explain to him what they were getting. On November 10th, she called again wanting to change the location of one of the gates. Even though I could visualize the new location, I didn't ask her to just measure the distance between the walls; knowing that if the opening is the same, the gate length and cost would not change. Instead I went back to her home to discuss how the gate would work, how it would be attached, and how to remove it when not in use. I took a partial deposit at that time to order the assorted parts required to secure the two areas, and told her I'd be back to install on November 13th. At no time was a "true, custom designed, built-in type solution" mentioned. Besides, the ability to remove the gates was always a major factor. When I returned on the appointed time November 13th to install the parts, no one questioned the 15 assorted boxed parts needed to assemble the gates. I also cut, ripped, beveled, and stained two pieces of oak to mount the gate hardware at their newel posts, at no charge, so not to damage their wood. I vacuumed any wood and plaster debris, and collected all discarded packaging and garbage before showing the family how to operate, and remove the gates. The member signed off on her satisfaction with the completed project, and I was paid in full. I couldn't leave any instruction manuals for the two custom gates because they are only packaged in boxes containing a complete gate. But I sent her all the paperwork he asked for the following morning obtained from the Internet. When her husband called to express his displeasure, I made an offer to try to rectify the situation, including the removal of all three gates. I explained that I've been at their home twice already and installed the agreed upon products, not to mention the time and travel to acquire the parts, and the fact that I would end up with used/unboxed merchandise. The value of my time and professionalism were questioned, and he stated, "He's stuck with them". He was convinced that the gates would not last two weeks, but was willing to live with them if I returned $200 of his wife's money. Those terms were unacceptable to me, and he asked me one final question: "If you feel that you charged a fair price for the delivered products", I'll never hear from him again. I answered, "Yes, I did" and politely ended our conversation.

Hal first came out to go through our house and give us an estimate on childproofing the house. Once he sent us the estimate (later that day), we picked some but not all of the services/items he quoted on. He came out within the next week to do the work. I really appreciated how much time Hal took as he went through the house. He answered a lot of questions that I had, and gave me a realistic picture of the type of work that should be done (either by us or by him). Similarly, I appreciated how much care he took as he installed the gates. We've been using them for over a week now, and they're great!
Description of Work: Four safety gates were installed and bookshelves, tall lamps, and baseball stadium seats (really!) were secured to walls/baseboards. Also, plywood barriers were attached to an open TV stand, to keep wires away from baby.

Hal was very knowledgeable about what needed to be done to childproof both our homes. He also was excellent at trying to install things in a way that preserved the overall decor of our homes. He also was honest about what he thought we needed or didn't need. Hal showed up on time and was easy to do business with.
Description of Work: Home Safe Home childproofed both my home and city condo, including installing customized gates for our stair case.

Hal was the third person we'd contacted for an estimate for childproofing. We chose him because he is professional, not an alarmist, and had excellent ratings on Angie's List. Hal did not disappoint. He was on time and installed all of the items we'd requested. He cleaned up after himself and we are completely pleased with his work. Hal is also available to de-install the gates and patch the walls when the time comes for that. We highly recommend Home Safe Home Childproofing.
Description of Work: Hal installed 4 wooden gates, a few magnet locks and a power strip cover.
