My wife and I were trying to improve the energy efficiency of our home, as well as help with the comfort level upstairs. We had a room upstairs that would get very cold in the winter and very hot in the summer. We had Ameren (our Gas/Electric provider) come do an assessment and they recommended what work needed to be performed and how much they were willing to pay the contractor we chose (from the list they provided) in incentives. Bottom line it was supposed to cost us up to $2000 to do it all. After calling some other service providers that were way above our price range (some of them even doubling what Ameren estimated!), we gave Phoenix Insulation a call. It was obvious they were a small shop, but when they came in to do an estimate, they were extremely courteous, and explained everything in a way that didn't make us feel like we were being talked down to. A couple of days later and they came back with an estimate that was even lower than what Ameren told us! We were not anxious to spend $2000 let alone the $4000 some companies were estimating, so it was hard to resist their offer. We considered it a risk to have the work done for less money, thinking we might give up quality or get screwed in the end, but our experience could not have been better! First, we set up the appointment for the blower-door test to see where our house was leaking air. We had a slight scheduling snafu, and over the phone they told me the wrong date they were going to head over. I took the morning off work for them to come over, and when they weren't there by about 9:30 I gave a call. They figured out the issue, apologized, and the guy came over on what I assume would have been his day off to come and do the blower door test. After they crunched the numbers we scheduled a day for them to come do the actual work. Each time they came into our house they took off their shoes, and they encouraged us to take a look at what they were doing. They were very polite. They spent all day in our attic spaces spraying in new insulation, hanging up R-board. They spread plastic in the areas that were affected, and at the end of the day they cleaned up after themselves and vacuumed. Our closet was cleaner than before they got there! They had to come back the next day to do the attic spray-foam and run the blower door test again. They even used the basement window to load their equipment so they didn't trudge it through our house! All of this work happened without us writing a single check. When they were done, they said they had to calculate the difference so they could see how much Ameren was going to pay them back, so they would know how much to charge us. They weren't in a hurry to get a check until they knew how much it was going to cost. When they came back the next day with the numbers, it was $100 less than their original estimate! I have never been happier to write a check. It's been a couple of weeks and there's already a huge difference in the temperature of our upstairs rooms. The one thing we did not opt to do was fix a return-air duct in our small upstairs office. Instead we had them seal up that wall. That saved us $500 or so and if we decide to add in the return air we can do that in the future. Again, I'm not sure how much more we could have hoped for, but our experience has exceeded our expectations. I'm not sure what the extra $3000+ would have gotten us (maybe an extra 5% efficiency?), but when it comes to service, courtesy and the value we got from our investment, Phoenix Insulation was a no-brainer.
Description of Work: Had them come and fix the insulation in two attic spaces (including buttoning up the walls with R-board and spraying in new insulation), and spray-foam insulation in our basement.
