Each part of this job was customized. I had interviewed several contractors who were recommended and each of them told me several of my desired outcomes were not possible, and if possible, very expensive. Jan, was not only capable, but willing, and had the skills and knowledge of materials and how to engineer the designs for the desired outcomes. Jan has exceptional problem solving skills. The job required not only an experienced contractor but also one with very high standards and a passion for craftsmanship and doing things right. The project took a good deal of time exceeding what we both anticipated, however it was the nature of the beast given that every part of the project was in some way unique. When the main part of the project was complete, my confidence in Jan was such. that I made all the material selections based on our mutually agreed upon design of the new bathroom. I was unavailable at that point for six weeks and I left the bathroom project in his hands. When Jan ran into unanticipated problems, which there were several, he made very good decisions about changes in keeping with his keen appreciation for what I would and would not want. I could not have been happier with the outcome. Hiring Jan is a collaborative. You will work closely with him and he wants his clients to have an honest and fair assessment of each part of the project. His pricing is very very fair. He has a great wit combined with an unflappable seriousness about every detail. I would say that Jan was responsible for at least 80% of the actual work with the assistance of other experts or support as needed with certain plumbing or electrical applications and painting. When small situations surfaced and problems ensued he fixed them and was very involved with any other workmen on the job. Jan is extremely reliable. Jan is hands on and ever present at the job site - not a contractor who subs out much of the job. If he's not available when you want him for a job---he's worth the wait.
Description of Work: All the work Jan executed were custom designed elements and renovation of a condominium--- Entrance to the condo was completely redesigned and rebuilt to accommodate three 11 foot high closets with custom oversize doors, hidden hinges and interiors along with a floating sculptural ceiling to incorporate lighting. Venting for the w/d and utility room was moved and new closets doors constructed. Overlay of new flooring and custom baseboards throughout, and enlarged 11 foot custom closet in bedroom. The bathroom was completely gutted and renovated. Many other smaller details were completed during the upgrade. Almost every part of the condo was touched in some way.

The pricing is extremely fair for the quality, attention and speed with which Jan's and his team work. For all the large, important phases, Jan is always present, sometimes doing the work himself. As the project winds down, you may have his first assistant, Michael who is a great guy and hard worker. Actually, everyone Jan brings in is great at what they do-he is totally in charge of them and you don't feel you are being left alone to manage sub contractors. Special mention should go to the electrician, plumber and the amazing work done by the hardwood floor team. The floors are incredibly well done for the cost, and I was given a lot of help and patience in this area. Thanks for convincing me the color would turn out great, Jan even when I was unsure. You were right! Jan will coordinate everything- who comes in when, and what decisions you need to have made at what time. For example, he'll tell you when to have appliances, when to pick out cabinets, get your tile, etc. There is some leg work involved with this, but Jan can make some recommendations on where to find all the things you'll need. I think the three most important things to know about Hi-Teq and Jan are: One, because they stay somewhat small, there is a higher level of personal attention-Jan can be reached at all times, and is great about texting, sending photos and emailing. Two, he is a trustworthy, honest, hardworking guy, who wont' tell you what you want to hear. He always strives to do things the and quot;right wayand quot;. He doesn't cut corners, and believe me, I would know. Many times, I argued with Jan, and found out he was right once I understood what was going on. He takes the time to explain things to you, which is difficult if you don't know anything about contract work or construction, but he tries. From the smallest things, like extra insulation foam inside my walls around electrical sockets (he explained that many companies skip this kind of thing), to personally expertly tiling my kitchen and baths, he always checked in with me before making design decisions. Three, he will not abandon you when the job is technically done. He will fix errors and come back if things he was responsible for have a problem.
Description of Work: What didn't Hi-Teq do? Our home was COMPLETELY gutted. Down to the studs. New drywall everywhere, electrical, plumbing, insulation, proper venting of appliances, reconfigured laundry area, sliding door installation, all new interior doors, new trim throughout, work on eaves with ventilation, new fireplace (resized and configuration with stone veneer tile), all closet system installation, cabinet installation, bath and kitchen fixture installation, can lighting, installation of all light fixtures, new hardwood floors through out, totally new kitchen and 2- 1/2 baths. Our basement was totally gutted as well- all paneling removed, new drywall and can lights everywhere. Basement stairs were enhanced for safety and appearance by Jan because it was the right thing to do. No charge. See next section for more details about Hi-Teq's work ethic and high standards for quality. We are very happy with everything and what we weren't, he made right.
Earlier this year, we purchased what will be our retirement condo in downtown Chicago. The previous owner left the entire unit essentially gutted. The bathroom layout of the original developer was poorly designed, which led to a disintegration in the tilework and walls. This job required complete demolition of the space and removal and replacement of damaged floors and walls, and adding additional storage. We needed to install a new kitchen, completely remodel the bedrooms and the bathrooms, and install new lighting and electrical outlets. After receiving multiple bids and checking on references, we decided to hire Hi-Teq, Inc and its owner Jan Belej primarily based on the rave reviews of his references. His bid came is at about half of the highest bid and at about two-thirds of the two bids in the middle range but his was not the lowest bid but it was the most complete bid. Hiring his company was THE the best decision we could have ever made. Jan had been intimately involved in the process throughout, and had rigorously abided by the condo's rules, regs and docs, which is not always an easy task in an urban condominium complex. Because we werey living in DC during the renovation, it was important that we hired someone we could trust implicitly. Jan was an excellent communicator whether by phone, texting or email. We spoke frequently (many times daily during the initial phases). Jan's attention to detail was impressive even to me and a lot of people consider me to be obsessive (LOL). Jan's crew worked diligently to finish in a timely manner and their work was meticulous. All of our friends are amazed at the quality of the craftsmanship.
