If you are to read a review and take its advice, then this is the review to note. Run for the hills and never call Mike Carso or Advanced Floors BMC. We employed Mike and Advanced Floors BMC to remodel a new home we bought last July '15. Mike was charming and enthusiastic during the bid process, stating over and over again, it was a "four week job". Once we signed the contract and handed over the first 50% (it was a $38.8K renovation), the nightmare began. Our closing was delayed by ten days and Mike used that excuse for the next SEVEN (yes, I said seven) months as to why things couldn't be scheduled, why there were no workers available or why things didn't get fixed (he made so many mistakes we lost count). We had to live in our unfinished basement for the first month with our three kids (2yr old twins, and a five year old and a dog) because our apt. lease was up and Mike was supposed to have completed the floors and painting done by then (we gave him a four week window). No such luck. Seven months later, there are still flooring, sanding, staining, painting, woodwork, repairs and installation work that is not completed, along with dozens of other things left unfinished. It was a living h***. We paid Mike to do the following: had carpet on the second level replaced with new oak floors, stained. We had the ground level floors sanded and stained. We had the stair system ripped and replaced. We had the basement carpet replaced. All three levels were painted. A new center island granite counter top replaced. A fireplace surround and mantle to be built, tiled and painted. And a bunch of misc. things (bookshelves, outlets, light fixtures installed etc.) After seven months of Mike lying to us, not showing up, working 90 minute days, sending emotionally-charged crazy rant text messages, avoiding us, making mistakes and doing them over, and looking at the overall poor quality of the work, we hired an attorney. Mike's first conversation with our attorney was a walk through of the house with all the open items in December '15. At that meeting he bragged that if we decided to take him to court, he would win because he has only lost one of the cases brought against him. Remember, this is the guy that we had paid by this point about 80% of the money on the job and had done less than half of the work. He frequently referred to "a judge would never rule against him" if we brought a case. Who does that to a customer who has paid a guy ten's of thousands of dollars to renovate a family home and not delivered? Excuses Mike gave us: my truck broke down, my wife is sick, my worker's car broke down. my wife is in the hospital and I have the flu (same time), I'm on another job and you're not my only customer, I'm at a Naval Base and they confiscate my phones (yet days/weeks/evenings/weekends would go by with no response), "a judge would never rule against me if you took me to court"...the list goes on. Even when our attorney got involved, he gave them all the excuses. I'll drop off the materials on Wednesday (no show), I will complete the stairs in five days (seven months and half way constructed with pieces in the garage), send confirmation emails and texts restating what he told us (I have your doors in my storage facility - he is lying). I'm happy to say, we fired Mike this month and he is out of our lives. He left stealing materials from the job that he was paid for and we are now filing complaints with relevant police departments to have him charged criminally. We will also pursue him civilly. Everyone needs to know what a bad human being Mike is. He got a Naval Base job while he was not doing ours and bragged about how big the contract was. Mike is the worst kind of contractor there is. He is a thief. He is a fraud. He is incompetent. He took our money, frequently yelled at us, NEVER delivered on time or did things when he said he would, lied on a weekly basis and made our lives a living h***. Then he simply stopped coming to our house, answering our calls, our attorney's calls and kept our money. And it was a lot of money for us - nearly $40,000 in renovations that we had saved up. Painting: The quality of the work is incredibly poor. Frequent overspray over our new floors and cabinets, left paint all over the glass on our windows, no straight lines anywhere, bubbling because it wasn't left to dry properly, wrong colors put up that had to be corrected. We just hired new REAL painters to correct all of Mike's mistakes. Stairs: will have to be redone. We've had two people view the work Mike has done and both left shaking their heads as to what he was thinking. The top of each stair is now loose and coming off, the treads don't sit neatly against the walls, the top flight is at a different angle. And Mike left the job with all flights either pitching forward or backwards, but nowhere near level. Incompetent. Floors: landing on stairs sloping, not level. Top pieces of flooring step not joined properly and coming loose. Abandoned the job and never finished the floors at the side entrance or stairs down to garage door. Electrical: We have canned lights that are hanging out of the ceiling because the guy Mike hired couldn't install them correctly and left the job. It took the guy five trips to do the basics. Etiquette: Abusive demeanor. Completely untrustworthy. We changed our door code because of Mike. He and his workers never wiped their feet. He and his workers never turned up on time and never worked a full day (some days were 90 mins and he left with a long list of outstanding items). Felt ok about tracking mud, dust and dirt from outside to inside and never cleaned up. Child-like emotional tantrum outbursts on the phone, email and text every week. He is a tax cheat - he demanded cash payments to avoid paying company taxes and when he accepts an electronic transfer, yelled at us because now he had to declare the job to his accountant and the IRS. Granite counter top: Took our money ($800) in July. Delivered the countertop after our attorney got involved six months later. Theft: we paid him for 14 solid oak doors, bathroom mirrors, sump pump, exhaust fan, fireplace mantle and he stole the money (over $6K in materials alone) and abandoned the job. As I said at the start. If there is EVER a review to take heed of, this is the one. Remember the name. Tell your friends. But whatever you do, do not give Mike Carso and Advanced Floors BMC one cent.
