You get what you pay for and while I feel that the price/hour was a little high, the job done was worth every cent of it. Tested everything, etc. I am very pleased with the job!!
Description of Work: Had a water heater removed and replaced. Called them the night before and they said they would be here by 10am with the new one that I put on will-call. They were spot on here @ 10 ready to go! They estimated 3-5 hours, it ended up being 5 due to some old elbows in the pipes, but as expected!

Only one individual was sent and it was clearly a two person job. The individual took about twelve hours to accomplish a six to eight hour job, and he seemed to have no regard for safety. He did do well with the lights but he did take some risks that he should not have taken.

Project went very well with the subcontractor and now I am using him for further work.
Description of Work: They were going out of town and they referred me to a sub contractor, Jim L at Capstone Contractors and he called me right away and followed up. He came and picked up the door and then installed it. It was not as easy to do as it sounded and he just kept with it until it was right. I even then ended up contracting with Capstone Contractors to do further work for us.

Everything went fine. I wasn't really expecting a subcontractor, based on reviews that I read, however I was put in touch with Mike, who handled everything very well. I think the Handyman has a good relationship with Mike, and for good reason. They installed everything in about a week, and did a great job.
Description of Work: Had 880 square feet of solid maple flooring installed. They also tore out a couple hundred feet of ceramic to make way for the wood. Also needed to lay some 1/4 inch underlayment to even out the subfloor from room to room.

The peeling of the stain has occurred after about a year. Debris also sticks to the deck which causes me to have to scrub the deck to clean it. Usually I just have to clean it off with water. They did come out to inspect the problem a couple of days after my call. The company did come back out and re-sanded the deck completely which took 2 days and re-stained it to my complete satisfaction. They did not charge me for this and followed through with exactly what they said they would do. They stood behind their work and I would definitely use them again.

Faith was fantastic with scheduling! I was in desperate need of quick service and she came through for me by scheduling the handyman to arrive at my home in less than 48 hours! Also, to make sure she, and the handyman that would be coming to my home, both understood the work I wanted to have completed and the colors of grout, stain, etc., she set up a call for all 3 of us to talk so everything was clear. The evening before the handyman arrived, he called to confirm and also to confirm my location. He was punctual, polite and courteous. The work was all completed in the day and was done very well;l he even cleaned up any mess that was made during the day. Also, the coupon for a first time appointment made the price even better! Overall, this was a fabulous experience and I would not hesitate to call Faith again whenever I need help in my home.
Description of Work: Re-grout and caulking of 2 bathrooms, including clean-up. Repaired worn areas on hard wood floors so we didn't have to refinish the entire floor. And painted the kitchen.

After having a PVC drain pipe repaired from an installation of a towel rack by previous owners (owners screwed the towel rack into the PVC pipe), I called and left a message with Handy Men and Mrs Helper. I received a call back the next day from Faith. I explained the situation and the time constraint that I was under to have the job completed. To my surprise, Faith told me she could send out a handyman (Rayne) the next day at 8:00am. Rayne called at 8:00am to inform me he was running late. He arrived at 9:00am and immediately went to work. Throughout the work he did keep me informed as to how things were looking. Rayne finished the work approximately at 3:00 pm. The drywall patching matched perfectly with the surrounding areas. The paint matched perfectly which I provided. The final test was my wife arriving home and inspecting the work, with which she was very pleased. A few days later I received a call back from Faith asking if I was pleased with the work they provided. I thought, Wow! here's a company that sounds like they really care about their customers. That's what I call customer service! I will definitely use their services again. Thank You Faith

gas leak repair
+ -1 more
There aren't too many people you would leave alone in your house to fix a gas leak. Scott is the only one I can think of. While at my house on another job, I asked Scott to figure out why my heatilator was unusable. So much time had passed since I used it, that I couldn't remember why I had shut it off. Scott identified a leak in the gas regulator valve and said he could fix it if he could find the part (the heatilator is 32 years old). I added it to my never-ending list of things that needed to be done and within a week Scott had called to tell me that he had located the part, but because the part cost $300, he wanted to be sure I still wanted to make the repair before purchasing it. I gave him the go-ahead and within a week we had scheduled time for the valve to be replaced. Then someone scheduled a meeting I had to attend--so I left Scott and the new valve, along with the 32 year old instructions for the original installation of the heatilator. A few hours later I returned home as Scott was finishing up. As is so often the case in jobs at my home (which was constructed in 1975 by high school students) the job was full of surprises and when Scott was finished I had a correctly installed and working heatilator, which was more than I got when I moved in 11 years ago.
Description of Work: Identify problem with 32 year-old heatilator and fix it to make it usable again. Problem turning out to be a leaky gas regulator valve.

When I called Faith Southard and said "I want to turn my storage room into a room for fabric storage," she put me on the phone with Rod. I told Rod I wanted to cover the walls with cedar, and that I would need specialized, built-in shelving. At that point, I wasn't sure what else would be involved. As is often the case, my changes caused the job to become much lengthier than the three to four days originally scheduled--but I ended up with exactly what I wanted. When Scott arrived on the first day, I told him the basic shelving structure I was thinking of, and the size of the bins I would need. He worked out all the design details to make sure the shelving would bear the weight of fabric without bowing; to protect the fabric from leaching of the plywood; etc. He suggested the cover for the sink in the room, so I could use it as a counter--and then built the cover so that it actually locks into place, instead of sliding off the sink. We picked the floor and light fixture together--and between the two of us I think we hit several home improvement store to come up with the 86 sheets of Plexiglas needed for the bin dividers. To keep the Plexiglas cuts smooth, I convinced Scott to try using a quilting tool--the rotary cutter--which worked out great. I felt that the entire project was a joint effort and that Scott cared just as much as I did about getting it right. When you are spending almost $10,000 to protect a fabric collection worth several times that much, it's hard to find a handyman who will take you seriously. Throughout the project, Scott did his best to protect the rest of my garage from dust (because it was mid-winter, all of the cutting had to be done in the garage). The project took about nine days spread over a three week period--and I ended up with exactly what I had imagined but been unable to explain or draw. If I had been able to create plans for the project ahead of time, it would have been quicker to build--instead, I had Scott implementing (and often improving) my evolving design ideas. The friends who don't think I'm crazy are AMAZED by the conversion of this storage space into a fabric mecca.
Description of Work: A unique solution for a unique problem. I had a heated storage closet off my garage that I wanted to convert to a specialized room for fabric storage (as a quilter, I often have up to 4,000 yards of fabric on hand). I needed a design that would allow me to sort fabric by type and color, and see at a glance what I had. It also had to be bug-resistant, well-lit, and have a door that didn't make me feel like I'd locked myself in a closet every time I went into the room. Scott worked with me to implement my vision for the room--in a project that included paneling the walls with cedar, putting in flooring, replacing the small light fixture with a large, true-color fixture, and building a structure of 55 separate bins (11 bins on each of five levels), separated by Plexiglas, with each bin holding up to 100 yards of fabric. There is a top shelf for storing quilt batts; a fitted top for the sink so I can use it for sorting; and a new hose rack--as well as a new door.

BETWEEN YOU AND SCOTT, THIS QUILT CLOSET TURNED OUT TO BE A WORK OR ART IN ITSELF! I WAS SIMPLY AMAZED WHEN I SAW IT, I SAW PICTURES BEFORE, BUT THEY DIDN'T DO IT JUSTICE! I BELIEVE YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN A DESIGNER, ARCHITECT, AND YOU ARE DEFINITELY A VISIONARY...THAT MUST BE ONE OF YOUR GIFTS...A VISIONARY. IT IS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. TEAM WORK! MAYBE WE SHOULD HIRE YOU! THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL THE WORK FRIEND. FAITH
As usual, I met Scott (and Doug for the first two days) with LOTS of ideas in my head and nothing on paper. Designing the stairs was especially challenging because of the space constraints--if the stairs extended too far into the garage they would intrude on my parking space--if the landing was rectangular, the door to the house wouldn't open--and I wanted at least 20 cubic feet of closed storage, on two levels, under the stairs. On days 1 and 2, the post holes were dug, three items were sunk in concrete, a solar safety light was installed under the eaves on one side of the house (which Scott later ran around the house in the dark in the pouring rain to test)--and we did a lot of talking through what I wanted. Then the shopping started. Despite several design modifications along the way, there were very few items left-over. One big decision was whether to build the stair unit off-site to save me travel charges. Scott and I decided there were too many constraints that might be neglected off-site, so the unit was built in my garage--although every night my garage was cleaned so I could park the car inside it. The staircase took several days to construct, but it's exactly what I wanted--and I'm looking forward to painting it myself. The remaining work got done over the course of three more days, including a day spent mostly in my attic working with the skylight installers. The plexiglass barrier on the patio door was another design challenge--and one that Scott and I solved together. For the first time in years I can sit with the patio door open for ventilation without worrying about whether a dog on the inside sees a squirrel on the outside, or whether the cats are poking at the bottom of the screen to taunt the dogs when they are outside. My doorbell works. My cornices are built and hanging, waiting for me to be struck by inspiration as to how to finish them. This was another great experience. My only complaint is that as usual, I failed to adequately explain everything that needed to be done and as a result the project was split over several weeks instead of being worked on consecutive days. I take full responsibility for this. Something about having Scott in the house causes me to think of "just one more thing" at least twice a day.
Description of Work: The major focus of this job was constructing a 40" high staircase, with a landing, railing and storage space underneath that could be used to access a 36"w x 30" d x 59" high luggage storage locker, the bottom of which is 48" above floor level. It was important that this staircase be firmly affixed to the wall for use, but also be movable in the event that something large needed to be moved in or out of my house through the back door. The job also involved installing lighting in the locker itself and constructing a shelf so that the space would be more usable. In addition to this major undertaking (which included all of the design work), this particular job involved building some plywood window cornices, installing storage racks in the garage to hold items above floor level, running the wiring and making the electrical connection for a new electric ventilating skylight, finding a way to attach quilt hangers to an uneven stone wall that would permit the quilt to hang flat, installing a new doorbell, etc. In addition, I needed a metal sculpture sunk into concrete in the backyard and wanted to design and construct a plexiglass barrier on my sliding patio door to keep the dogs and cats from scratching at or ripping the screen.

The projects went fantastically well, as we knew they would. By this time, Rannett had already completed three projects in our home and we knew he would do a great job. But, once again, he far exceeded our expectations. The living room/dining room are breath-taking, due to Rannett's creativity, we came up with something that was just perfect. The guest room was exactly what we asked for. We were very pleased! And even thought neither of these were huge jobs in and of themselves, Rod and Faith were happy to have Rannett take them on for us. We appreciated that!
Description of Work: This report describes two painting projects both completed in the fall of 2007. The living room/dining room and the guest bedroom. The living room/dining room existing paint was in good condition but it didn't match the color scheme of our new dining room/living room furniture (we had to upgrade because of the higher quality level of new kitchen)!!! Rannett came in to assess the walls and once again came up with a beautiful solution. We didn't want too much texture (as that was in the furniture and the window coverings). And we didn't want to be consistent in feeling with the kitchen. He was here for approximately two days painting and finishing. Little did we realize he would be back less than a month later to paint the guest room. This room's walls were a disaster. 20- year old wallpaper with too many holes to mention (from various and sundry plaques, awards, posters, you name it). We wanted something very clean, very plain, not a lot of personality and certainly nothing along the lines of the artwork Rannett had done previously. He listened to us, cleaned up the awful walls, patched, and painted, exactly as we had asked.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TAKING THE TIME TO POST YOUR COMMENTS. WE ARE VERY GRATEFUL FOR THE CONTINUED RELATIONSHIP AND HOW YOU CONTINUE TO CALL US FOR ALL OF YOUR PROJECT NEEDS. RANNET IS A WONDERFUL PAINTER. AND THE IDEA OF YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR IS SO VERY TRUE, HE IS TRULY A MASTER AT WHAT HE DOES. THANKS FOR RECOGNIZING THAT! FAITH
Based on our prior projects with Rod and Faith's company, we had a feeling this one would be great as well. We had always sworn we would move before we did our kitchen (having heard others' horror stories), but based on our prior experiences with Rod & Faith, we took a chance. Our experience was so positive all around. Rod told us it would take 2 months; it took 2 months no more. Rod hooked us up with suppliers for granite and cabinets. As with his team, those suppliers were utmost professionals. They helped us not only with the configuration of the cabinetry but also with the selection of the best granite for us. Again, Jay did an outstanding job. And Rannett showed true genius once more. We said we thought we wanted some texture on the walls...with a contemporary look. He came up with a solution that was so outstanding, we marvel at it every single day. We have been enjoying the kitchen for over a year now and love it every bit as much as we did that first day it was done. While no one likes to be without a kitchen for two months, it was worth every single second. The results are outstanding and we couldn't be happier! In fact (see other reports), after the kitchen, we had Rod and his team complete four other projects with us (2 bathrooms and 2 painting jobs)!!!
Description of Work: The kitchen project (January of 2007) was the third of seven projects Handymen & Mrs. Helper completed for us over a two year period (starting in May of 2006 through March of 2008). This was a mega-project. While we did not change the footprint of our existing kitchen, we ripped down to the studs, so changed everything else (except the window). The scope of the project included: ripping out the appliances (dishwasher, refrigerator, stove, microwave) and replacing with new appliances. Ripping out the Formica counter tops and replacing with granite counters and back-splashes. Ripping out the Pergo floor and replacing with new Pergo floor. Ripping out the indescribably hideous cabinets (many with dog gnawing marks and/or candle burns) and replacing with new cherry cabinets that went up to the ceiling. Ripping out the 2 hideous light fixtures and replacing with 6 cans, 3 pendant lights, and lighting/electrical strips under each and every cabinet. Building a granite covered peninsula where the movable dining room table had been. Ripping off the 20+ year old wallpaper and repainting walls and ceiling. Creating a pantry where a roughshod bulletin board had been. Ripping out the phone extension and building an extension into the adjoining closet.

He removed the satellite bracket and fixed the holes and tucked in the wires. He also scraped the expanding foam left by the installers. It looks great! He got on the roof and put steel mesh over the opening to the dryer vent. (See before and after pictures). Scott was unable to seal the patio door and window. The window looks like an afterthought by the original builder and the patio door is warped and no amount of sealant will make the slightest bit of difference. Both need to be replaced. The leak in the roof was inspected by a roofing specialist subcontracted by HANDYMEN & MRS HELPER. We are waiting on the estimate for that job. Scott also looked at the drywall by our master shower that had bubbling paint and alerted us to the fact that mold and water have infiltrated the tiles near the shower pan and was seeping into the drywall (again - the genius builders used drywall instead of cement board). He recommended that the problem get fixed ASAP and to stop using that shower to prevent more damage. Finally - HANDYMEN & MRS HELPER/PAINTING has a 4 hour minimum, but Scott was only there 3 hours and only charged us for those 3 hours. Honest, professional and very helpful. We need an estimate on the shower work and HANDYMEN & MRS HELPER/PAINTING will be our first call for an estimate. We will definitely use them again.
Description of Work: We needed to have 5 jobs done: 1. Climb on roof and put mesh over dryer vent to prevent birds from nesting there and ending up in my dryer (7 dead birds in last year). 2. Remove satellite dish bracket from siding of house. It was about 22 feet up and my ladder only reached 16 feet (of course), fill the bolt holes with caulk and tuck in the wires left over. 3. Fix door to master bath so it will close. (Long story involving me almost destroying the door and jamb over the past year trying to "fix" it.) 4. Caulk/seal patio door and window to fix leaks. 5. Check for leak on roof (new stain on ceiling. There is a 4 hour minimum and the price as of this date was $81 per hour plus a $25 transportation fee due to the gas prices having basically doubled over the last 18 months.

The project went great and I would use them again. The team showed up on time for both days of work. Originally, I had just planned to have the drywall project completed, but because the drywall was going to take two days, I asked if they could make me a good deal on paining the additional rooms, since they had to be there anyway. They made me what I felt was a very fair deal, so we had them complete both the drywall and the paining projects during the two days. The two team members that painted were efficient and neat. They were quite too, which was nice because of sleeping kids here. The projects both look great and they cleaned up after the projects.
Description of Work: The company provided two services at our home. First, they replaced some drywall in the ceiling that had water damage, painted the ceiling and surrounding walls in the living room. Second, they painted two additional rooms, an entryway, upstairs hall and another small hallway.

THANK YOU! WE ALWAYS LOVE IT WHEN THE CUSTOMER WANTS PAINTING DONE WHILE WE ARE DRYWALLING! WHY NOT? SINCE THEY ARE THERE WAITING ON THE DRYWALL MUD TO DRY BEFORE SANDING AND RE-APPLYING MUD, ITS A GOOD CHANCE TO PAINT AND DO OTHER THINGS FOR OUR CUSTOMERS. WE ENJOYED WORKING FOR YOU AND APPRECIATED THE CHANCE TO KEEP THE DAYS FULL. THANKS AGAIN. FAITH

They came out and found the trouble to be a blown circuit breaker. They replaced the fried breaker. While we were doing the troubleshooting we discovered that the original contractor had not put GFI outlets in the kitchen. (How it passed the building inspection I dont know). As they were there on a 4 hour minimum I had them replace the outlets in the kitchen as well. They were fast, courteous and did whatever we needed. I would definitely hire them again.
Description of Work: We had the power go out in 3 out of 4 bathrooms in the house all of a sudden.

Rein arrived on time each day. Rein did a great job with both the drywall and painting. What impressed us most was that he cleaned up any mess that was made at the end of each day. We will definitely consider Handy Men & Mrs. Helper for when we paint the inside of our home.
Description of Work: Rein repaired drywall in our garage (3-car) and painted. Rein put cloths on the floor even though it was a garage, did some drywalling, rubbed down walls in garage until smooth, then undercoated. Put two coats of paint on walls. Also painted inside of garage doors, and door leading from garage into house. Took 2-1/2 days and Rein cleaned up any mess that was made at the end of each day.

Rod, Faith, and the entire crew were very punctual and did what they promised within a fairly tight timeframe. They listened to our remodeling ideas and offered efficient, workable solutions to our desired improvements. We are happy with the way the work turned out and appreciate the diligence with which they pursued finishing the job to our complete satisfaction.
Description of Work: Rod, Heath (performed actual handyman and carpentry work) and Rannet (painter) installed crown molding and wainscoting in our dining room and crown in our master bedroom. They assembled and installed a fireplace mantle, also in our dining room. They repaired and painted the walls and ceiling of the dining room, halls, kitchen and master bedroom. They also removed an old fluorescent light fixture and 3 can lights in the kitchen and replaced with a new fixture and updated can lighting.

Excellent. We had them do some tile and lighting work in our daughter's bathroom, as well as installing new kitchen lighting before we had Handy Men and Mrs. Helper do a total remodel on our master bathroom. We were extremely impressed by their communications and collaboration throughout our entire project. They were very conscientious. They brought ideas to our attention and discussed alternatives, even after the initial design was decided upon. They were also very trustworthy, on time and within budget. They were easy to work with, very friendly (and fun) and they also made sure that the demolition materials were removed and they cleaned up, as well as preparing the work area to minimize any damage to our home. In our daughter's bathroom, they tore down the old tile, installed new tile and lighting for that bathroom. We would definitely use Handy Men and Mrs. Helper again for any of our home projects. They do a quality, first class job.
Description of Work: Handy Men and Mrs. Helper remodeled our master bathroom and our daughter's bathroom. In the master bathroom, they did all the electrical, plumbing, drywall, tiling, painting and installation of new shower, tub, toilet, vanities and lighting system.
