 + 0 moreI was really pleased. They had the dustless equipment cotton bags that they used so we got less dust. They suggested we could paint our walls because we tore up the old carpeting. They took up the old carpeting. They were right, the only dust was slightly maybe on the window ledge. For what they advertised, with that type of equipment, they were right then they masked because we had the cabinets already installed too but they were covered in here just in case there was dust, but they used a type that covered the door that led into the kitchen so there wouldn't be any dust, unless coming from the living room and bedroom. It's a type of masking the plastic that I guess the dust adheres to it. It's not just regular plastic. When they say dustless, not realizing, you're going to have this particular bag on their equipment. Now we know and when they put the plastic up, it was not just plastic from Home Depot. It was plastic that touches the dust specific to them so that was nice. We never knew that and they were right. It said right in the contract. The door and the room openings, they would put plastic film to contain the dust in the working areas, and the way they said it was true because after it was done, I could feel that a little dust went in there that might not have been captured 100% on a dust bag. The dust was dust. When they were sanding, the floors had been covered. The house was built in 1959 and we lived here for 30 years so there's 30 years of carpeting on that. They did a great job! As for the price, we had 1 or 2 other companies and this was perfect.
Description of Work: I used IC Custom HardWood Flooring for 2 rooms. That was going down to the original floor and they had to do some replacement to the wood.

 + 0 moreCalin was able to fit my job into his schedule almost as soon as I selected IC. He provided references that were helpful in making my decision. He also completed my project while I was away on business. I chose to have the work done this way after speaking with his references. It helped to not need to stay in a hotel while the work was being done. There were a few spots that didn't take the seal coat and Calin made a separate trip out to take care of my concerns.

Now that the newel posts are squared away, I would not hesitate to hire IC Custom for future work. I have had multiple compliments on how beautiful all of the hardwood looks! Thank you Calin and IC Custom. Very pleased with the job.
Description of Work: Installed exotic hardwood floors in living room, dining room, downstairs and upstairs hall, as well as new contractor grade white baseboard. Also had exotic hardwood stair treads, newel posts and banister installed and had wrought iron spindles installed as part of stair railings. Refinished existing hardwood kitchen floor. | |Apparent delay in shipping some of the stair materials delayed the job. Otherwise showed up when they said they would. Moved the furniture (separate charge) and were very careful with it. had to jack hammer out cement in the downstairs hall (base for tile) Floors look great. I do not believe they moved the kitchen appliances to refinish under them. There were some minor issues with the floor finish, but they were very responsive in fixing them. | |Stairs seemed to be a bit outside their comfort zone. After completion the banister was noticeably crooked, as were the individual spindles and knuckles on the spindles. They came back and straightened the banister somewhat. Looks better than it did. Also straightened wrought iron spindles and knuckles on the spindles - i am happy with those issues and the treads look fine. Issue is that they drilled through the front of the newel post to affix the banister to the newel post. They put a 3" in diameter plug of contrasting wood in over the bolt. They kind of scratched this up to vary the concentration of the stain on the surface in an attempt to mimic the grain of the exotic hardwood. Frankly, it looks completely ridiculous. Same situation on the top of the banister where they bolted it into the wall. The newel post, however, is directly across from the front door and it is very noticeable. Laughable, really. Calin was going to come back to install a face piece over this, but he's in the wind. I think they were out over their skis on the stairs. They corrected everything but the newel post, which is annoying. However the bulk of the work was good. On the fence about using them again. Would do so for floors, but ONLY floors. | |Bottom line - very happy with the floors. My bad for choosing a flooring contractor to do stairs. Stairs are a specialty. Spend the extra money to hire a contractor that specializes in stairs.

 + 0 moreProvided a useful consultation before preparing the estimate, and talked through every aspect of the project in detail. The crew got to work quickly on the arranged date and made rapid progress sanding off the old finish and getting down to "virgin" wood. It's soon brought home that this is a major undertaking, and there's no going back once you get started! At the end of each day the work site was left tidy and organized and we received regular updates on progress. 3 sample patches were stained with colors close to what we had asked for in order that we could choose the look we wanted. Throughout the project nothing was a drama, there was nothing that couldn't be handled, and everything was taken in stride. The work was done with care and attention to detail throughout, and the finished result was nothing short of spectacular!
Description of Work: Sanded worn white oak flooring covering about 1,100 square feet, stair treads and handrail. Replaced 52 wooden balusters with iron. Applied dark stain to floor, stair treads and handrail. Finished with several coats of polyurethane finish, screening between coats to smooth surface. Replaced shoe molding removed in order to sand. stain and finish.

We were a little hesitant because we weren't sure how it would turn out but after it was done, the finished floors were a marvel to behold and wished we had done it sooner. Calin inspired confidence and was able to accommodate our short time frame. His worker Marcel was fastidious and conscientious and is truly a craftsman as it showed in the final product. I highly recommend this company and would not hesitate to use them again in the future. You will not be disappointed. Job well done.

 + 0 moreBought service on Angie's List Deals for $375. Because I have darker stained floors another $125 was added to the final bill so the stain would match. Didn't know about this upcharge when I bought the service. Company was cooperative as far as scheduling as I needed to get some remodeling finished and the room repainted before doing the floor. I had some deep gouges in the floor (it is an old house) and they said they would fill before the final stain. That never happened. Floor looks fine and match was very good.

 + 1 moreIn short, they were absolutely perfect. We used IC Hardwood to replace a flooring subcontractor used by our general contractor. They dust-free sanded, stained and sealed our newly installed oak flooring (including removing our bannisters to properly address areas poorly installed by the first contractor) and installed shoe moulding. IC Hardwood returned calls promptly, showed up exactly when they said they would, performed exactly the work the promised, and did so exactly on budget. Their dust free sanding truly was dust free (as opposed to other far too many other contractors that sell a sander with a dust bag as "dust free"). They were always professional and pleasant to deal with. And most importantly, we never needed to baby sit them because they performed their work with pride - we never felt like they were looking to cut corners, fudge detail or turn shoddy work product (which seems to be the norm for contractors in this Chicagoland area). I wouldn't think of calling any other company to handle our floors in the future (and IC Hardwood is the third flooring contractor we've used in this area).
Description of Work: IC Hardwood finished the job that another contractor started. They sanded, stained and sealed our newly installed oak flooring (including removing our bannisters to properly address areas poorly installed by the first contractor) and installed shoe moulding.

 + 1 moreWe were hoping to be able to get the job done in 1 day, even with 3 coats of the finish. They agreed to start early and finish in one day. The dustless system is truly dustless. The water based finish has much less odor than an oil based finish. It has a less glossy, matte look, which we like, but is really durable. We had the rest of the main floor done almost a year ago and the finish looks brand new, despite 3 giant dogs efforts to mar it. They were able to sand and put on 2 coats of finish then came back later in the afternoon to put on the last coat. It looks beautiful, and the men that did the work were very professional. They even removed the floor grates and cleaned out the top part of the vents. We highly recommend this company and would use them again.

 + 0 moreThe job went very well, indeed despite some inherent challenges that the project entailed. One of the main obstacles was blending the new hardwood flooring with existing hardwood in the foyer and kitchen area. This involved cutting out some of the existing flooring and staggering the new wood so the seams would not show and it would look like all the hardwood was installed at the same time. They also had to compensate for a poor job done by another company by installing new and much better looking and fitting wood thresh holds leading to the laundry room and the upstairs bath. The existing hardwood floors were in poor shape due to age and excessive usage so after all the new wood and stairs were installed the entire wood floor was sanded down to the original wood, stained and finished with several coats of scratch resistant poly. Note: to help us decide on a stain color they actually rolled out three different stains on the floor so it was relatively easy for us to make that all important color decision. Once the stains dried back they were sanded off and the floor was readied for the stain application process. In addition to the work outlined above IC Custom installed all new quarter round trim throughout the work area, pulled up a portion of the subfloor that was badly damaged and replaced it with new subfloor material. Likewise, stair carpeting and carpeting in the upstairs hall were also removed and carted away. After the job was complete and upon close examination we realized that the installation of one tread did not meet our expectations. All it took is one call to IC Custom and they had a man to our house the next day where he set about and fixed the problem to our complete satisfaction. Also worth mentioning was the care the team exhibited in sealing off our rooms to minimize dust and dirt transfer from the work area to other parts of the home. Suffice it to say, this is a company that we would definitely hire again and recommend to our friends and relatives. Description of Work: Installed new hardwood floors in the dining room and study, new stairs (treads and risers) to the second floor and new wood in the upstairs hall. They sanded the existing hardwood down to the original wood and stained and finished both existing wood and the new wood so it appears as though all the wood was installed at the same time.

They came out one time and the crew was friendly and professional. Finished the job in one day! They took the extra steps to insure the dust from sanding was contained to the area they were refinishing. IC Woodworking refinished my 50+ year old oak floor to look as if it was new. The crew cleaned up before they left. I am totally pleased with the service price and the finished product. I would highly recommend IC Woodworking to anyone, and I plan on using them in the near future to refinish the hardwood in the rest of my home.

 + 0 moreReally great! Calin was the first contractor to reply to my request and come out to provide a proposal. He was very professional and courteous and explained their process and what work would need to be done to meet my desired result. I had two other contractors provide quotes, but they were both significantly higher priced. Calin provided color chips and allowed us to keep them while we made a final decision. Calin and his crew arrived on time for the job and carefully moved our furniture and taped off the area to minimize dust. They used a dustless sanding system which really did prevent 98% of the dust. I was amazed with this since several years ago we refinished floors in another home and dust was everywhere. The entire job - sanding, staining and three finish coats - was completed in one day. This was possible because they used a quick dry stain and a Swedish water based finish. I would highly recommend IC Custom Hardwood Flooring and will definitely use them for future work, if needed.  + 0 more$125.00 extra on top of the $99 Angie's List Big Deal. He tested that my floor would accept the stain/polyurathane he used. I had more square footage than the deal covered. They also replaced a damaged section in the floor from a piece I had in the basement. The floor looks much nicer than it did, it was pretty bad before. I would reccomend this refinishing to someone, pretty good bang for the buck. I'm not sure how long it will last, but I think it was worth it so far.
