From the website to the inventory list for the estimate through the several phone conversations and onto the move, the entire experience was great. Very professional, yet friendly and genuine. Kenny and his crew were hard working and consistently pleasant. They worked hard to get us moved in under the time estimate, which they did by 30 minutes, andthey expressed disappointment It wasn't by more. I would definitely hire them again and recommend them highly. The price was more than others quoted, but I believe you get what you pay for. No nickel and diming with this company.

Overall we had a very positive experience with JP Moving. Administrative - We were very pleased (and relieved!) that the administrative office was able to squeeze us in to their schedule on such short notice, especially the last week of the month. They were also willing to work with us to accomodate our unique situation of needing storage services overnight. However, they were not very up-front with us on pricing when we received the inital estimate and left out several "extra costs" that can add up significantly. When my husband received the estimate, he asked if there were any additional charges we needed to be aware of that aren't part of the hourly rate or flat truck rental fee. The rep said no, so we thought we were in the clear. They failed to disclose that they charge $40 (!) per item for wrapping and boxing, which in our circumstance was necessary for 2 TVs and 2 large, framed paintings and mirrors. Fortunately, the guys who moved us were able to wrap some of these items without the box in blankets and with shrink wrap which came at no added cost, but be forewarned - if you need them to pack any large, fragile items in a box you are going to have to pay! The office also did not ask us for a detailed list of how much we had to move, so the guys were not as well-prepared with supplies as they could have been, particularly wardrobe boxes. In the end they were creative and we found a way to make it all work, but the office could have helped them do their job better by being more thorough upfront. Moving Day(s) - We could not have been more pleased with the men who moved us. In particular, Anthony (the team lead) and Daniel were absolutely fantastic to have on the move. They were very professional, attentive to detail, addressed our questions and concerns, and moved us out in a very careful manner. The total move time took longer than we anticipated, but it was largely due to the team being so careful with our items (and we had a lot of stuff), so for me it was worth the added hourly expense to ensure our belongings made it through the move safely. We moved into a brand new house, so we were very worried about not damaging the brand new floors, walls, and other fixtures in the house. The team was willing to wrap fragile areas in the home and paid close attention throughout the move-in process to not damage the house. We had no issues or damages in the entire move, so we were thrilled! Recommendation - I would definitely use JP Moving again given the quality of the team and the move itself, but be sure to ask LOTS of questions about pricing upfront and be proactive about supplying a detailed inventory of items to move to help the team come better prepared.
Description of Work: We moved out of a large 2-bedroom condo in Chicago to a new home in the western suburbs. We had an issue come up with at our new house 2 days before the move-in, so we needed to find someone with less than a week's notice to change our move-in date as the original movers we booked were not available on the new move-in date. To make matters more complex, we had to move out on one day and move in on another, so we needed to find a company that was willing to store our items in the truck overnight. JP Moving was willing to fit us in.

Anthony and Mike called on the way to our home, arrived on time and began working. They were efficient, pleasant and very careful with all items in our home and with those to be moved. Things that needed to be wrapped were done without any prompting from me and the few questions I asked were answered in full. When delivering at the new location they worked in the same way and finished on time. It's nice to have hired a company that does what they say they are going to do and at the same time be great to deal with! Fantastic job!!
Description of Work: We are moving and hired JP Moving to move some larger pieces from our present home to our new home. Having lived in this home for more than 2 decades we have acquired many additional pieces of furniture over the years and wanted to have a better appearance when putting the home up for sale. Bonnie came very quickly and gave an estimate and set a date for the following day!

I contacted JP Moving for a cross country move based on good reviews on Angie's List. I sent them a detailed inventory of all my items and attached a link to view my house which was listed for sale and under contract so they could see everything. They initially quoted me $3400-$3700 for a move from Chicago to Boca Raton, Florida. They requested a visit to review my furniture so we scheduled a visit. When they came, they were able to view all the furniture on my list. They came on a Friday and were aware that I needed movers the following Monday. After an assessment, they came back inflating the original quote ($3400-3700) as shown below: QuoteBased on the information you provided, cost is as follows: Materials: ................................................. = $133.00 Tariff: .................................................... = $6,489.96 Miscellaneous Items: * STAIR CARRY @ ORIGIN ..................................... = $350.00 * SHUTTLE FEE @ ORIGIN ..................................... = $420.00 Estimated Cost: ................... $7,392.96 Our Discount to you is: ........... $2,831.98 Total Price: ...................... $4,560.98 TOTAL ESTIMATE: ................... $4,560.98 THIS QUOTE DOES NOT INCLUDE ANY PACKING IF NEEDED. Not only was every item over-estimated in weight, but they added several new items that was not in the original quote even though they were aware of the facts from my previous correspondence to them (Stair Carry, Shuttle Fee, Materials).Initially, you might think that the actual weight would be more after seeing the items, but it's the reverse. Let me give you some examples: A floor lamp (cheap plastic kind you buy at Walmart) which weights about 10 lbs was put down as 63 lbs. A plastic animal crate which weights about 15 lbs was put down as 70 lbs. A wooden child safety gate which weights about 15 lbs was put down as 70 lbs. A hard shell guitar case which weights about 20 lbs was put down as 110 lbs. A bbq grill which weights about 50 lbs was put down as 140 lbs.I can go on. Facts don't lie. After getting weighed by another company, my stuff amounted to 4700 lbs even with items which accounts for an additional 15-20% beyond what JP Moving had on their list that I added later. JP Moving's estimate after reviewing all my stuff was 6000 lbs. The other moving company did not charge me additional fees for moving up/down 4 flights of stairs or shuttle fees for carrying furniture through my garage to the back alley where the truck was parked. As you can see from the detailed quote I pasted, they arbitrarily provided me with a discount of $2,831.98. Was I supposed to fall for this because they are giving me a great deal? The original price before the discount would have equated to $1.08 per lb. If you get quotes from other movers, it is in the ballpark of $0.68 to $0.76 per lb. Just because I had to move in 2-3 days, I guess they thought I was desperate so they decided to pad on the charges. In my opinion, you should avoid these guys unless you are okay with inflated charges and possibly surprises when you get the final bill. I'm glad I went with the other company that I found on Angie's List. I don't like honest people getting taken so this review is to make other aware of my experience with this vendor.
Description of Work: Provided initial estimate based on inventory of items I sent to them. Went to my house to review the furniture and provided an additional quote.

Response from J & P Moving Service, Inc.
We did in fact have the pleasure of speaking with the member regarding a quote for an interstate move. During the very first conversation, we told the member our company doesn't feel right about booking interstate moves over the phone and requested that we come do an in-home estimate to get the most accurate quote. We didn't wait until the last minute as he suggests, he called on very short notice wanting to just schedule his move after getting an initial price based on very limited information. We scheduled the in home estimate within three days of his call. During our conversations, the member did not tell us that he had 4 flights of stairs, all companies charge an extra fee for stairs, as it adds to the amount of labor needed for the job. A shuttle was needed as he lived directly across the street from a school and lives in a courtyard with no access for a 53' trailer to park, so we needed to send a smaller truck and then transfer the items to our trailer. If you look closely at the estimate given, the original estimate is exactly the same except for the stairs and shuttle: had he advised us of the 42 stairs, we would have updated the quote: again, this is why we insisted on doing an in-home estimate to ensure the most accurate upfront pricing and the only way to do this is to come to the home and review all the factors in play. I will briefly address the misunderstanding the member has with the table of measurements, which gives a estimated weight for each item. First, I will start by saying this an industry standard, government approved form approved for use by all moving companies in the country. Every single moving company uses the same form, so we didn't just pull numbers out of the sky. The form uses an average amount for each item, some may actually weigh more and some may weigh less, as not all boxes weigh exactly the same, just as every couch, mattress, dresser, etc. don't weigh exactly the same, hence the need for an industry approved average to ensure every moving company is using the same means to estimate the weight of shipments. We get certified weight tickets for every move and if there is a decrease or increase in weight, the customer is billed accordingly, so if the memeber's actual weight was 4700 lbs, he would have received a discount. In closing, I don't think it's fair to give a company an "F" rating because you don't like an upfront estimate given. We don't claim to be the cheapest mover in town, but we pride ourselves on honest-upfront pricing and don't like giving estimates over the phone, as the best possible way to get an accurate estimate is to have a mover come and see all the parameters of each moving job and bid accordingly.

They were a little late for the actual move but not much. The woman that did the estimate was very quick so I was somewhat concerned but I've realized that she just knows her stuff! The guys that did the actual move were great; they worked hard and protected our furniture well. They had quite a challenge at our home as we have an addition being put on so they couldn't access the front door but had to deliver everything through the basement or by climbing a flight of stairs up to our deck. As alot was being put in the basement anyway, this was an advantage since they were able to pull their truck right around to our walk out basement. But several of the largest items had to be carried up a flight of stairs (or two). At least three times, due to miscommunication between my husband and myself, one of them carried something up the flights of stairs only to have to turn around and carry it back down to the basement. Through it all, they kept a great, friendly attitude! We are very satisfied and would recommend them to anyone for a long-distance move.

I contacted the company on 9/15/2011 to schedule a move for October, and the date I wanted for 10/20/2011 was available. I planned to get my own boxes and pack and label them, so nothing had to be done as far as that. The move was from a 2-bedroom, 2nd-floor apartment which also had additional stairs, to a one-story home. The scheduling went without a hitch and they showed up on time. Angie's List members are offered 5 free wardrobe box rentals and free delivery of moving supplies. I didn't take advantage of either one. I preferred to buy new U-Haul wardrobe boxes and get them packed up before move day. I was stressed out on move day but the 3-man team arrived on time and made me feel comfortable because they were friendly and easy to work with. I still had some packing to do while they were moving me out, hence the stress. I had approximately 55 boxes. I liked that they charge a flat rate by the hour (so there were no surprises financially) and provided a three-man team. I didn't want a company that only provided two men as there are many advantages to a three-man team, based on my prior moving experiences! They wrapped up and protected my furniture for me. Everything was moved without any damage. The estimated time of 3 hours was close--it was 3.5 hours, which I expected it might be. They even set up my bed for me! I wasn't sure whether or not they would do that. So, I highly recommend them based on their flat hourly rate and strong backs!
Description of Work: I hired them to move me from my second-floor apartment (which also had an upstairs loft area) to a home. I packed my own boxes and had them labeled and mostly ready to go.

The move went extremely well. The team arrived on time on a Sunday morning, introduced themselves to me and my Uncle and got right to work. We walked through the condo and I showed them what needed to be done. My Uncle's chair needed to be the the last thing on the truck, and the first thing unloaded, so he would have a seat during all of the activity. They wrapped all of the furniture in blankets, brought the wardrobe boxes mentioned in the Angies list ad, and worked promptly and efficiently. They had a 3 man team which made things go very smoothly. Once they got going, two guys carried stuff down, and the third packed the truck. We only filled part of the truck, but everything was neatly and tightly packed at the front of the truck and strapped so it would not shift during the drive. At the new place they unloaded his chair first, so he could sit while the unloading progressed. Everything was unloaded quickly, and set up in the new space. The glass tops of the dressers, and the glass curio cabinet arrived safely. They moved the curio cabinet around a bit until it was in the right spot. Most importantly, they were friendly and respectful to my Uncle. Our move was completed in less time than expected, so we were only charged for the actual time of the move plus the truck charge as per the agreement. I was happy that we were under the amount quoted in the phone estimate, and only had to pay the minimum move charge. It's hard enough moving yourself, let alone an elderly relative. My Uncle is a retired policement, so he is skeptical by nature. For him to say that these guys worked hard, knew what they were doing, and were well worth the price is a very high compliment. I agree. From my perspective, if even something minor had not gone well, I would have been hearing about it for a long time. He has been living in the new place for about two weeks now, and is acclimating well. So I'm delighted for a variety of reasons.
Description of Work: I hired JP Moving to move my elderly Uncle from a condo to an independent living community.
